Page 3: We the people of Our Lady of the Snows Parish are a ... · purification and enlightenment. On the Third, Fourth and Fifth Sundays of Lent, they will be tested with a series of scrutinies

Dear Parishioners,

On this First Sunday of Lent we pray for those in the community who participate in the “Rite of Sending for Election” at the 11:00 AM Mass. Our catechumens, Mary Codrington and Laxmi and Sonu Gupta, will stand before the assembly and let us know that they are prepared and ready to make the next step in becoming fully initiated into the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil.

This afternoon these three catechumens will join with hundreds of others in the diocese

who seek initiation and through the Rite of Election they will have their names inscribed in the Book of the Elect and they will express their desire for Baptism before our diocesan bishop, Bishop DiMarzio, or before one of his auxiliary bishops. They will then no longer be called catechumens but the elect.

For the elect Lent is significant because it is the final phase before Easter. After almost

two years of preparation which consisted of weekly catechesis, prayer, and encouragement by church sponsors, our RCIA ministry and the whole parish, the elect enter into a period of purification and enlightenment. On the Third, Fourth and Fifth Sundays of Lent, they will be tested with a series of scrutinies by which they seek to be purged of their sinful ways so to be free to receive God’s mercy and grace.

Perhaps for all of us at the start of this holy season we join with Mary, Laxmi and Sonu

and all the elect in the diocese and Church, and desiring to be fully cleansed of our sinful inclinations, this Lent will be significant for us too.

RITE OF ELECTION FOOD PANTRY

IN YOUR CHARITY PLEASE PRAY FOR

The sick, homebound and hospitalized . . .

All Our Faithful Departed Loved Ones . . . Susan Neikens

FOOD PANTRY On the first Sunday of every month the Human Concerns Center accepts non-perishable food items to help those less fortunate in the parish and surrounding areas. Some suggested foods include canned vegetables and fruits, tuna and salmon, tomato sauce, beans, etc. Also dried foods such as macaroni and cheese, cereals, evaporated milk, pasta, peanut butter and jelly/jam, etc. are needed. Please check the expiration dates to ensure freshness and kindly place your donations in the blue collection bin located in the Gathering Space to the left of the main entrance of the church. Thank you for your generosity!

STATIONS OF THE CROSS will be prayed every Saturday of Lent in the church at 9:30 AM. Join in walking with the Lord on His Way of the Cross throughout this holy season.

RITE OF ELECTION. Today a special ceremony

called the “Rite of Sending for Election and

Continuing Conversion” will take place at the 11:00 AM Mass. We ask prayers for Mary Codrington, Laxmi Gupta and

Sonu Gupta who will take part in the ceremony and then join with hundreds of catechumens and candidates at the Rite of Election

led by Bishop DiMarzio.
