rrane our first game until we have tried and tested all aspects of facility from playing on the pitches to pouring a pint in the bar and ensuring there is hot water in the showers. This in itself will take time but get ready to move home games from Lancing by around mid season. I can't wait !!

Greetings

Good evening everyone and welcome to Culver Road for tonight’s Parafix Sussex Senior Challenge Cup 3rd round tie versus Eastbourne Borough. Both sides are in good form coming in to this tie but few could argue that our visitors will be the favourites to progress through to the last eight, given the thirty-seven places that separate the two sides. On Saturday they had a fine 3-0 win away to promotion hopefuls Wealdstone in the Vanarama National League South to keep themselves on the fringes of the play-off places, having previously knocked fellow National League side Dartford out of the Buildbase FA Trophy after a replay. In recent years we might have had good reason to simply run up the white flag in the face of such high-ranking opponents but this season, as we know, is very different indeed. With the risk of repeating previous comments (that’s the trouble with playing six successive home matches!), our record against sides from divisions above us makes for impressive reading, even including the very narrow losses to Poole Town and Bath City, so we have no reason to fear Borough this evening especially after another fine display at the weekend. Despite pre-match concerns at how the side would deal with the physicality of our visitors from Kent, our players put on yet another accomplished performance to blow Whitstable Town away in the second half and, but for the excellence of their goalkeeper, we might have won by many more than the four goals. Just as impressively, we recorded a tenth clean sheet of the campaign and our seventh in nine matches. It’s fair to say that it’s been a number of years that we’ve achieved such a feat. Congratulations to all our players, then, on their magnificent recent form. As well as tonight, our credentials face another stern test on Saturday when we travel down to Hythe where we will be looking to become the first side to defeat the Cannons on their own turf in the league this season. Victory for the Hornets would see us leapfrog Hythe and, potentially, take us into second place in the Bostik South East table and you could be there to see it, as the club is laying on a coach to the match. It will depart from Collyers at 1130am, with places bookable through Jeff Barrett on 07712888980 or [email protected] for just £12. As if that’s not enough to whet your appetite, we then have a local ‘derby’ at Three Bridges next Tuesday (ko 7.45pm) before taking on league leaders Cray Wanderers here on Saturday 15th December. Cray have looked invincible this season, dropping just four points from fourteen matches and recorded the treble over us last season with 3-0 and 4-3 wins in the league and that horrific 8-0 thrashing in the FA Trophy. If ever there was a fixture by which to judge the club’s progress this season then surely this is it. Kick-off is 3pm and a reminder that this match will be our final ‘home’ game of 2018 so also your last chance to buy those Christmas gifts from our club shop. It will also be one of the final opportunities to purchase tickets for our big Christmas Raffle, for which great prizes are continuing to be added. The draw will take place after our New Year’s Day clash with Guernsey so please make sure you get your tickets from a club official, or Sue Bravery, priced at just £1 each. Today’s match is sponsored by Time Out Catering, the on-site caterers here at Culver Road, to whom we give our thanks for their generous sponsorship and for keeping our supporters well-fed on matchdays. We should also thank Secretary Jeff Barrett, without whom we wouldn’t have a ball to play with! At Horsham Football Club, we very much believe in the ‘One Club’ culture and are delighted to see the successes of our youth sides this season, with two of our teams reaching their respective finals of the Arun & Chichester Youth League Cup. Two more are through to the latter stages of the County Cup with our U11 Development Team having been narrowly defeated in the final of the Autumn Cup and now going well in the Winter Cup. Although still a few years away from stepping up to senior football, it is with great pride that our youth team coaches are developing sides that could promise an exciting future for the Hornets and I would encourage anyone with a spare Sunday on their hands to pop along and give the lads your support. You’ll find the fixtures for all our five youth teams listed on our official website www.horsham-fc.co.uk. That’s it from me for now. I’m looking forward to a rare few days away from programme editing after the last few weeks. See you at Hythe!

Tonight we face probably the toughest test we could have had at this stage of this season’s Senior Cup in Eastbourne Borough. With Crawley Town already out and Brighton usually fielding a few youngsters, Eastbourne are the highest-ranked side and are in excellent form right now. They had a good win at Wealdstone and knocked Dartford out of the Trophy this time last week. They also have a good record in this competition and usually put out a strong side so we know it’ll be a tough test for us. It’s the start of some very big games for us in December but it’ll be a good measure of where we are, with matches against two of the top three sides coming up. But we’re in very good form and, on Saturday, we saw how we can be patient to win games. I felt we wasted the first fifteen to twenty minutes when we didn’t really work them but then we started to click and in the last twenty-five minutes you could see some of the Whitstable players blowing hard when the ball went out of play. We said to the boys at half-time that if you keep moving the ball around then surely something will come of it and it did. Whitstable wanted a battle, their manager made no secret of that, but in the second half we played some brilliant football and gave them lots of problems. Perhaps we were a little fortunate in the manner of some of our goals but a real bugbear of mine is not getting the balls in the right areas, and the players hate me for keep going on about it, but you saw the proof of the pudding with our first two goals. I’m always telling them that if you put the ball in the right area then you’ll give yourself a chance because you’re forcing the defender or the goalkeeper to take action. The first goal came from a terrific corner that went in off the defender’s head and then the second was from a really dangerous cross from Charlie Harris that caused confusion in the penalty area and ended up in the net. Then you’ve got Lee’s goal, whether he meant it or not, but it was another positive piece of play. The final goal was the best of the lot, with a superb ball from Joey and Harvey deserved to get on the scoresheet. Let’s be honest, if it wasn’t for their ‘keeper, it would have been even more comfortable but I’ve got to be pleased with that. Once again the lads showed their patience and got their rewards. We gave a start to Kieran Lavery and he and Rob took a while to get to grips with each other’s game in the first half, which was understandable, and kept getting in each other’s way. But we talked about it at half-time and in the second half they worked well together. They’re both good at holding the ball up well and bringing others into the game, which is a big plus, and I think Kieran is a good fit for us. He’s a good lad who gets on well with the others and, as I said in Saturday’s notes, should give us that little bit extra for the time he’s with us. To be honest, I thought we looked a bit toothless in the games against Bath and Greenwich so that’s why we brought him in. He’s eligible for tonight and with Smudge now back from holiday it gives us good options up top. We’ve got some tough league games coming up but that doesn’t mean we’ll be taking things easy in the Senior Cup and I know what the players would say to me if I suggested we should. It’s a competition I’ve twice got to the semi-final stages of with East Preston and I would love to go one better with Horsham. The final prize of a match at the Amex is amazing and at this level it’s a real incentive to everyone. Hastings and Worthing have both said it’s a winnable competition and we think the same. Like I said, we have it all to do tonight but we’ll be giving it our all.

Horsham 4 Whitstable Town 0

Bostik League South East Division

Saturday 1st December 2018

Saturday’s victory over mid-table Whitstable took Horsham’s goals tally to ten without reply in the last three league games, lifting us into the play-off places for the first time this season. Ironically it is only goal difference that prevents the Hornets from claiming fourth spot ahead of Whyteleafe, yet that might have been different had it not been for a number of excellent saves by the Oystermen’s goalkeeper Dan Eason. New loan signing Kieran Lavery was given a start up front and it was his new team-mates who fashioned the game’s first opening on five minutes when Rob O’Toole mishit a first-time shot straight into his marker. Tyrell Richardson-Brown’s electric pace down the wing allowed him to chase down and beat his marker before switching play to O’Toole outside the box but the striker’s pass into the path of the onrushing Jack Brivio resulted in the midfielder smashing it well over the bar. Horsham’s final ball appeared to be lacking at times, with the home side only able to take the occasional shot under pressure from distance as Town’s defence did their best to limit their hosts, and when Brivio was closed down quickly, he rolled the ball out to Harvey Sparks who fired over the top from the angle. The closest Horsham went close to breaking the deadlock came moments later when Eason was called upon to tip Richardson-Brown’s low diagonal ball across the face of goal as it threatened to creep in at the back post. Despite clearly being on top throughout, the Hornets had to settle for a goalless first-half time after a dangerous run at the Whitstable defence saw Richardson-Brown flick the ball into the path of O’Toole, who struck a dangerous shot from the edge of the semi-circle that was pushed away by Eason. Whitstable’s resolve was broken, rather unfortunately, just three minutes into the second half as Horsham came running out of the traps. A fantastic twenty-five yard strike by Steve Metcalf was wonderfully palmed behind by Eason for a corner that was taken by Charlie Harris, whose delivery was accidentally headed into his own net by Stuart West. Quickly looking for a second goal to gain full control, Lavery’s clipped effort curled just beyond the far post as he looked to mark his debut with a goal after bamboozling two defenders with some clever footwork. However, the Hornets needed less than ten minutes to double their lead, again, in slightly fortunate circumstances. A Harris free-kick was headed back out by Whitstable debutant Sam Welch and, when Harris picked up the loose ball, he swung in a dangerous cross that eluded everyone including a disappointed Eason who had to retrieve the ball from his own net as Oystermen manager Scott Porter raged at his defence. Whitstable had a rare shot at goal on the hour mark when Michael Jenner tried his luck with a powerful attempt that never threatened to test Josh Pelling who otherwise had little to do throughout the contest. Some super build up play around Town’s box saw a flurry of passes exchanged before Sparks hit a right-footed drive over the bar while, on seventy-five minutes, Harris’ delicious cross was headed just wide by O’Toole. Substitute Lee Harding then saw an attempt touched onto the angle of post and crossbar by Eason before finding the net with an audacious chip over the ‘keeper and into the far corner of the net with supporters asking ‘shot or cross?’. The best goal of the game came in the final minute when, having earlier had a low shot parried away, Sparks finally got the goal his display had warranted when he latched onto a wonderful defence-splitting pass from Joey Taylor and went on to apply a confident finish, off the legs of Eason.

Despite leaders Cray Wanderers having the weekend off, Hastings United were unable to close the gap at the top when they were surprisingly beaten 3-2 at home by East Grinstead Town. The afternoon began well enough for the hosts when twenty-four goal forward Daniel Ajakaiye converted Youssouf Bamba’s through ball. But the Wasps were back on terms, and then went ahead, with two goals in the space of five minutes through Greg Cundle and a terrific long range strike by Orlando Smith. Jack Dixon put the hosts back on level terms with a deflected shot only for the Wasps to regain the lead after the break when Miles Chapman inadvertently diverted team-mate Smith’s shot into the net. Hastings’ misery at losing their 100% home record was compounded when Ajakaiye was shown a red card for an off-the-ball incident. There were no such problems for Hythe Town, though, as the Cannons cemented their third place with a 2-0 win at Guernsey, courtesy of a goal in each half from Zak Ansah and Jack Sammoutis. Whyteleafe were the day’s biggest winners, hitting visiting Faversham Town for six goals without reply at Church Road. It really was an afternoon to forget for the Lillywhites who trailed to first half goals from Lauris Chin and Marvin Armstrong, and a third from David Owusu-Akyeaw, by the time goalkeeper William Godmon was dismissed on the hour. A merciless home side then piled on the agony for the league’s latest whipping boys, adding further goals through Bradley Wilson, Arif Hattabi, and a second for Owusu-Akyeaw to remain in fourth place on goal difference from Horsham and a Haywards Heath Town side that returned from Greenwich Borough with a 4-1 victory. Josh Spinks got the scoring underway with his first of the season on nine minutes but parity was restored, just before the interval, when Teshuane Tyreece-Walters replied for the hosts. But another early goal, at the start of the second half, put Heath back in front courtesy of the in-form Andrew Dalhouse and Callum Saunders soon added a third. Josh Heyburn hit the crossbar for the hosts before Nathan Cooper wrapped things up for the Sussex side who recorded their biggest away win of the season to date. Having gone six games without a win, Ashford United picked up their fourth successive three point haul away to Phoenix Sports. It was a lively affair in former Hornet Tommy Warrilow’s first game in charge of the Nuts & Bolts, for whom Sam Corne opened the scoring on twenty-six minutes. Danny Parrish made it 2-0 in the second half only for Jeff Duah-Kessie to pull one back almost immediately and that was the way it stayed because Sam Mott saved a last minute penalty by Phoenix’s Ashley Probets in an incident that led to the dismissal of Ashford’s Stefan Cox. The evergreen Kenny Pogue was on the mark for Sevenoaks Town, who brought Ramsgate’s eight match unbeaten run to an end with a 3-1 success at Southwood Stadium. Jake Mackenzie got the hosts off to a flier with a goal on seven minutes but Frankie Sawyer levelled things from the spot and then Pogue gave the Oaks the half-time lead with Luke Coleman completing the scoring, twelve minutes from time. In the day’s only other match, Three Bridges moved up to sixteenth thanks to a 3-0 win away to Herne Bay, with Connor French helping himself to a hat-trick - including two goals in a minute just before the interval. It was the second successive shut-out by the Sussex side, and the first time this season that they have registered back-to-back league victories.

Founded as Langney Football Club in 1965, Eastbourne Borough Football Club has now moved into its second half-century. It has been a remarkable history, not quite unique - for many clubs in non-League can look back with pride on their small beginnings and genuine grass roots. But the Sports-Borough story has been quite a journey…. Back in 1965 there was an Eastbourne and a Langney, and almost literally a stretch of open land between. Originally a boys’ team who had outgrown their age group and wanted to stay together, the Club initially joined the Eastbourne & District Football League. The team played on local recreation grounds before moving to Prince's Park, near the Eastbourne seafront. By 1973/74 the club had scaled the Eastbourne & Hastings League and was beginning to look for a future beyond parks football. “They’ll never be more than a parks team!” was the infamous comment of one very senior official in Sussex football – but they proved him wrong. In 1983 Langney Sports were elected as a founder member of Division Three of the Sussex County League, and swiftly moved up through the divisions, rarely finishing outside the top four in Division One. Finally, after some close-run campaigns, the 1999/00 season, under management duo Garry Wilson and Nick Greenwood, saw the Sports take the Sussex County League title, gaining promotion to the Dr Martens League (Eastern Division) where, after a season of consolidation at the higher level, the Club finished a creditable ninth. Meanwhile, off the field, the Sports were laying sound physical foundations too. From those itinerant early years on local parks pitches, the club had always had the vision of a more permanent home and, audaciously, they had approached the local council with the improbable project of turning Priory Lane - then a mere expanse of empty marshland - into a proper stadium. The County League years saw those plans beginning to be realised. Then, during 2000/01, the club received a £117,000 grant from the Football Foundation to go towards further development of Priory Lane. At the end of the season the Football Committee made one of the most crucial decisions in the club's history: the change of name to Eastbourne Borough FC. Stalwarts had their reservations but the new name reflected the club’s status as ambassadors for the whole town, and not only the original Langney. The following season the club won the Sussex Senior Cup for the first time, beating holders Lewes, and within two seasons there was further promotion to the Dr Martens Premier Division. Within another year Borough were elevated to the newly inaugurated Conference South. 2004/05 proved to be a most successful season as Eastbourne Borough reached the Play-Off Final. Over 1,000 Borough supporters made the 500 mile round trip to Stoke City for the North v South Final against Altrincham, but it wasn't to be, losing 2-1 in an exciting encounter. The following campaign was disappointing but the Club achieved another milestone in reaching the 1st Round proper of the FA Cup for the first time, with the reward of a home tie against League Two club Oxford United.

Cheered on by a record crowd of 3,770, and in front of the Match of the Day cameras, Borough dramatically forced a 1-1 draw with a twice-taken last-minute penalty. The replay, though, was lost 3-0 at the Kassam Stadium. The 2006/07 season saw the squad adopt a change in direction with Garry Wilson placing an emphasis on "quality' not "quantity' and finished in seventh place, four points off a play-off berth. Buoyed by the previous league season, the club started the 2007/08 season in high spirits and it was to prove a most successful campaign with Eastbourne Borough beating Hampton & Richmond Borough 2-0 in the Play-Off Final at Stevenage. The triumphant night had completed a remarkable rise from recreation ground football to the pinnacle of non-League, the Conference Premier. The 2008/09 season was another step into the unknown for the club, with the opening Premier fixture a home game with Rushden & Diamonds. Any doubts re competitiveness of the squad, its infrastructure, the approach to only segregate when deemed appropriate, or the support of the Eastbourne public were dispelled by the end of the day. Notable results during the season included a double over Forest Green Rovers, a home win over ex-league club York City, success over Wrexham and an incredible 4-0 win at Woking. The season proved to be most rewarding with an impressive mid-table finish, amongst the ‘giants’ of the non-league game. 2009/10 was a tough season after a bright start, AFC Wimbledon and eventual FA Trophy winners Barrow were defeated at Priory Lane. But a three and a half month drought for a league victory left the Sports needing victory over champions Oxford United in the final game of the campaign. With six minutes to go and the scores level at 0-0, and results going against them elsewhere, Borough appeared to be heading for the drop. Then a final minute penalty, coolly converted by Simon Weatherstone, sparked wild scenes and another season in the Premier was secured. The Sports’ third season at National Conference level finally proved too much for the side and the club suffered its first ever relegation. Back in Conference South the Sports had the honour of kicking off the first ever match at the Amex Stadium, against Brighton and Hove Albion in a held-over Sussex Senior Cup Final. The 9,500 attendance remains the biggest crowd that the club has played in front of. There was much optimism for the 2011/12 season but, after a bright start, the season became a struggle and after only one league win in twelve outings the club parted company with Garry Wilson and Nick Greenwood. The decision for the club was difficult and painful. The decade (plus) of their tenure had seen unprecedented success but the decision was made and Tommy Widdrington took the reins. Widdrington was to oversee a new phase. He remained at the club for five seasons until April 2017 – a phase of mid-table stability in the National South. Equally important, the club’s infrastructure was strengthening, with conversion to a Community Interest Club, the opening of an Academy, and a splendid new 3G pitch installed at Priory Lane. Tommy moved on and Jamie Howell was appointed manager ahead of the 2017/18 season. Borough’s first aim, in the current 2018/19 season, is no different from our opponents: maintaining the status. The National South is a high-quality division and a challenging one, and we love competing in it. With seven play-off places once again available, the season is sure to be very open right till the end, and like everyone the Sports would love to be in the mix. We have spent half a century building – building teams, building facilities, building friendships – and our proudest achievement of 2017/18 was the National League award as Community Club of the Year. At Priory Lane, we have not just football but other activities such as bowls and archery, Tai Chi and Keep-Fit groups, an OFSTED-acclaimed nursery, a youth section of nearly 500 young players, and a strong commitment to disability sport. Horsham FC – on this day, 2001: The Hornets notched up their seventh successive victory with a 3-0 Ryman League win against Leatherhead, secured by a hat-trick from young striker Jamie Taylor. It was the third treble of the campaign for the former Broadbridge Heath teenager, and his fourteenth goal in seven games for a rampant Hornets who went ahead on eighteen minutes when Taylor converted a Luke Gedling pass. Leatherhead’s best reply came back off the woodwork and Taylor compounded the visitors’ frustration when he doubled the lead in stunning style in first half stoppage time, crashing one in off the underside of the crossbar. The youngster completed his hat-trick on seventy-two minutes after Gary Charman had headed Steve Payne’s cross against the bar.

The news recently that Richard Scudamore was to depart from his role as Premier League Executive

Chairman might have gone in one ear and out the other if it wasn’t for the follow up news item that he was

going to receive £5m as a ‘farewell bonus’.

It’s true that the Premier League is probably England’s finest sporting export, and no doubt Scudamore has

put the hours in helping to raise its profile, and the enormous sums of money that are generated thanks to

TV packages as the rights get sold around the world. But the truth is, when Mr Scudamore joined the Premier

League in 1999, this was an organisation that already made mega money.

Much like the players who earn ridiculous amounts of money, it is not HIS fault he’s being offered this sum,

and you can’t really blame him for accepting it (if he does). But rather, the main thing needs to be pointed

out that those who work within the Premier League are now so far removed from the grassroots game that

they fail to see that such sums of money infuriate football fans and clubs more and more, the lower down

the pyramid you go.

Ironically it was Bruce Buck, Chairman of Chelsea, who suggested that each club within the Premier League

stump up £250,000 each for Scudamore to enjoy during his retirement. Rather laughable really considering

that for most clubs, especially Chelsea, it isn’t really a lot of money these days when they can rely on the

deep pockets of Roman Abramovich. Yet that £250,000 will still be less than the reported £300,000 a week

wages that Raheem Stirling is set to earn.

The thing is, while I don’t wish to go on a rant about the obscene amounts of money within the Premier

League, I wouldn’t necessarily begrudge Scudamore’s £5m golden goodbye had he actually ensured that

the vast sums of money he made for the Premier League’s TV rights allowed for a certain percentage to be

allocated out to grassroots football, particularly the non-league.

Scudamore is already a wealthy man, and I have no particular objection to people earning such sums of

money or even accepting the bonus, but the truth is that the figure quoted simply goes to show how out of

touch the Premier League is compared to the rest of the footballing world. Surely £5m would be better off

in the hands of struggling lower league clubs worried about their survival and needing to rely on the goodwill

of their loyal fanbase to keep them afloat? I do hope that if he decides to accept the money that he donates

it to the grassroots game and demonstrates that football isn’t just all about the Premier League. If he doesn’t,

then his legacy will always be that he allowed the rich clubs to get richer, at the expense of smaller clubs

dying.

Nice work if you can get it! By Matt Dale

Down with the kids – a round up from Horsham Youth

After the first team moved into the promotion play-off places following Saturday’s 4-0 defeat of Whitstable Town, it was the turn of the club’s youngsters to take centre stage on Sunday with two of our sides looking to secure their places in next year’s cup finals, and they didn’t disappoint! The U12s were involved in a seven goal thriller down at Palatine Road where they edged out hosts Worthing United Colts 4-3, thanks to a late penalty from Luke York. The Hornets led 2-0 through goals from Stanley Hague and Markos Panoutsos, with Markos seeing a third goal ruled out for offside, before Worthing staged a spectacular second half comeback to go 3-2 up. With the final whistle looming, Bailey Moyo levelled the scores and then, in a dramatic late twist, the referee awarded Horsham a spot-kick that was successfully converted by the nerveless Luke to put the Hornets through to a League Cup final date with Worthing Town Blue next March. U14 Amber were also down in Worthing in cup action as they took on local side Worthing Town Red for a place in the final of the League Cup. Horsham started well in muddy and windy conditions, and on a small pitch, and went on to dominate the match with some nice one-touch football that was good to watch. They kept Worthing quiet and rarely gave them a sight of goal, with the excellent Sammy Henderson not letting them have a sniff. Max Warren and Max Morris were on the scoresheet to give the Hornets a place in next year’s final and keep their unbeaten run going as they head towards the Christmas break. The matches involving the U11s and U13s were postponed while U14 Green were without a fixture.

LANK

MATCH SUMMARY Saturday 22nd April 2006 Ryman League Division One Molesey 1 Horsham 3 Needing victory to secure promotion to the Isthmian Premier Division, Horsham looked like blowing their chances when Aaron Nowacki gave Molesey a third minute lead. But after an astonishing miss by Warren Burton, in which the ball rebounded back off the frame of an open goal and hit the prematurely-celebrating Moles striker before rolling harmlessly behind, Horsham turned the game on its head. Lee Carney came off the bench to set up Carl Rook for the equaliser with little more than twenty minutes to go and then Rook doubled his tally when pouncing on the rebound after Carney’s shot had been parried. Jamie Taylor added icing to the cake with a third to put the jubilant travelling supporters into dreamland.

Continuing our series in which we ask supporters to share with us their earliest memories of watching the Hornets, we hear from Matt Jones who credits his father for introducing him to the delights of all things HFC. Matt’s most vivid memory is from a match that those of us fortunate to have been there are unlikely to forget in a hurry. "For a lot of football fans their club is in their blood, and this is certainly the case for me. My Dad, a passionate Horsham fan from the mid-90s, started taking me along to Queen Street every other Saturday in the 2004/05 season and, thanks to Jamie Taylor’s goalscoring ability, I was instantly hooked. Although, the only thing I truly recall from ‘supporting’ the Hornets that season was the wait for us to shoot towards the Cowshed End just so I could play football with my mates by the corner flag. I wasn’t the greatest fan back then! I guess the first match that vividly sticks out in my memory is the away game to Molesey in 2006 where we clinched promotion to the Ryman Premier. It was one of the first away games I was ever allowed to go to, mainly due to the occasion but also because my Mum wanted to go as well, so I couldn’t not. I remember feeling the nerves, tension and dread that surely every Horsham fan felt when Molesey went a goal up, and then of course the relief when Carl Rook drew us level. The cage-rattling, daffodil-throwing Lardy Boys all added to the atmosphere, and, as the final whistle blew, amongst all the pandemonium as our promotion was confirmed, that’s when I knew I was a Lardy for life. Sadly, my Dad passed away four months later but I carried on going to home games whenever I could in the years that followed. After we left Queen Street in 2008 and moved down to Worthing I stopped going. But ever since 2013 I have been avidly supporting us through our ups and downs and it’s become a pleasure to stand where my Dad once stood, amongst the Lardy Army, singing and chanting until my throat turns sore. And now with us playing football that takes me back to the mid-noughties glory days, giving us a genuine chance of promotion again, I am loving following this brilliant, daft, amazing football club. It really is an exciting time to be supporting Horsham FC.” Horsham: Rob Frankland, Tom Graves, Ian Payne, Eddie French, Andy Howard, Mark Hawthorne, Matt Geard, John Westcott, Jamie Taylor, Carl Rook, Nigel Brake Used subs: Florian Mateos, Gary Charman, Lee Carney

We want you to share your earliest memory of watching the Hornets with us so please email Mark Wells at

On this day….

1872 American merchant vessel the Mary Celeste was discovered adrift and deserted in the Atlantic Ocean. Found in a dishevelled state, under partial sail and with its lifeboat missing, the fate of its crew remains a mystery to this day. The last entry in her log was dated ten days earlier, having set sail from New York to Genoa almost a month before with a cargo of methylated spirit. Following its recovery, various possibilities of foul play were considered, including mutiny by the crew, piracy by its discoverers - the crew of the Dei Gratia - and conspiracy to carry out insurance or salvage fraud. The inconclusive nature of the hearings helped to foster continued speculation as to the nature of the mystery, and the story has repeatedly been complicated by false detail and fantasy. Hypotheses that have been advanced include the effects on the crew of alcohol fumes rising from the cargo, submarine earthquakes (seaquakes), waterspouts, attack by a giant squid, and paranormal intervention. After the Gibraltar hearings, Mary Celeste continued in service under new owners. In 1885, her captain deliberately wrecked her off the coast of Haiti, as part of an attempted insurance fraud. The story of her 1872 abandonment has been recounted and dramatized many times, in documentaries, novels, plays and films, and the name of the ship has become a byword for unexplained desertion.

1954 - The first Burger King is opened in Miami, Florida. The company was founded in 1953 as Insta-Burger King but, when it ran into financial difficulties a year later, its two franchisees David Edgerton and James McLamore purchased the company and renamed it "Burger King". Over the next half-century, the company would change hands four times and, in late 2010, 3G Capital of Brazil acquired a majority stake in the company in a deal valued at US$3.26 billion. In September 2016, Burger King reported it had 15,243 outlets in one hundred countries of which nearly half are located in the United States. The first UK branch of Burger King was opened on Coventry Street in 1977. Now an entirely-franchised operation, Burger King’s Australian franchise, Hungry Jack’s, is the only franchise to operate under a different name. 1991 Pan American World Airways ceases its operations after sixty-four years. More commonly known as Pan Am, the airline was the principal and largest international air carrier in the United States from 1927 until its collapse. It was founded in 1927 as a scheduled air mail and passenger service, operating between Key West, Florida and Havana, Cuba. The airline is credited for many innovations that shaped the international airline industry, including the widespread use of jet aircraft, jumbo jets, and computerised reservation systems. It was also a founding member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the global airline industry association. Identified by its blue globe logo, the use of the word "Clipper" in its aircraft names and call signs, and the white uniform caps of its pilots, the airline was a cultural icon of the 20th century. By the mid-1970s, following huge investment in a large fleet of Boeing 747s despite the global oil crisis, Pan Am had racked up $364 million of accumulated losses over a ten year period, and its debts approached $1 billion. Drastic staff and fleet reductions held off the threat of bankruptcy, helping them to return to profitability by 1977 only for another hike in fuel prices, brought about by the Gulf War of 1990, to bring further losses for an airline that was already reeling from the terrorist attack in 1988 in which a hijacked Pan Am aircraft exploded over the Scottish town of Lockerbie killing all 243 passengers and sixteen crew. Forced to file for bankruptcy on January 8th 1991, its remaining profitable assets were sold to Delta Airlines and the airline finally ceased trading the following December.
