All six runs came in the first three innings and all at the expense of Arkansas starter Ricardo Sanchez. The RockHounds have, as the saying goes, had Sanchez’s “number.” In three starts, the Mariners prospect has gone 12.0 innings, allowing 17 runs on 26 hits (a 12.75 earned run average). Against the rest of the Texas League, Ricardo has a 2.92 ERA. Player Notes Nate Mondou has hit in four straight games. It may not be a long streak, it’s a good one. Nate is 8-for-11 in the four-gamer and is hitting .313 in his last 18 games. Mickey McDonald was 3-for-21 in his first six games since being promoted from A+) Stockton, but doubled that total Wednesday, going 3-for-4 and reaching base in 4-of-5 trips, adding a hit by pitch and a stolen base. Dan Gamache entered the game 0-for-20 since joining the club (he reached base seven times, but without a hit) then, as Nuke LaLoosh would put it, “announced his presence with authority,” ripping base hits in his first two Security Bank Ballpark at-bats (including a double). Brallan Perez (1-for-3, run, RBI, walk) has hits in four straight games (5-15, .333). Tomorrow’s Match-Up James Kaprielian will make his AA debut Thursday night. Originally selected by the Yankees with the 16 th overall pick in the 2015 draft after an outstanding career at UCLA, he was acquired by the A’s in the July 2017 trade that sent former RockHound Sonny Gray to New York (another former ‘Hound, Jorge Mateo, also went to Oakland in that deal along with Dustin Fowler). James has missed significant time due to injuries (in- cluding Tommy John surgery in 2017), so Thursday’s start will be just the 20 th appearance of his pro career. He is rated the Oakland’s # 6 prospect by MLB.com. Daulton Jefferies, whose career path has been very similar to Kapriellian’s, will be the ‘Hounds’ tandem starter. Daulton was drafted by Oakland (out of the Uni- versity of California) in 2016 (37 th overall) but had made only eight appearances as a professional before this season (Thursday will be his 22 nd game in 2019). He is rated the A’s # 14 prospect by MLB.com. Arkansas will counter with Justin Dunn, the Seattle Mariners’ # 2 prospect, making this one of the premier pitching matchups in all of Double-A Thursday. Nice Finish When they met last week in North Little Rock, the RockHounds and Arkansas Travelers played three games and scored a total of 12 runs. Three pitches into Wednesday night’s series opener at Security Bank Ballpark, the Travelers led, 2-0, on the first of Evan White’s two home runs. Starter Grant Holmes (and, yes, the headline is a Grant reference) responded by retiring 13 of the next 15 batters he faced, and was backed by a five-run second inning, highlighted by Chase Calabuig’s three-run triple, in which the RockHounds took the lead for good. Dan Gamache led off the third with a double and scored on Nate Mondou’s RBI single to cap the RockHounds scoring. The game’s only other run came on White’s second home run (his 13th of the season), a solo drive over the high wall in left field in the eighth. Calabuig, Mondou & Mickey McDonald each had three hits and Gamache had two to lead the RockHounds. Holmes (5-2, 3.13) went five innings for the win, backed by the bullpen of Cody Stull, John Gorman, and Zack Erwin, who earned his sixth save in as many chances. The win, in the opener of a three-game series (and seven-game homestand), was the ‘Hounds third in-a-row. Hair-Raising Start ... Nice FinishWhen they met last week in North Little Rock, the RockHounds and Arkansas Travelers played three games and scored a total of 12 runs.
