Principal’s Message
WEEK 1 TERM 2
22 April 2020
Welcome Back
It goes without saying that the start to this term is one that we will
remember. There is a lot to be grateful for, even though the world
around us is not always filled with great news stories. I know I have
said it many times, but I believe some messages are worth
repeating.
I am very grateful for the way our school community live our school
values as we navigate through each day. Without exception, every
student, staff member, parent and community have started with
kindness and a sense of citizenship to support those around
us. I have countless examples of people going above and beyond
to help our students feel safe, supported and learning.
The levels of respect, patience and understanding has been felt
by all across our school community. Never before has there been
a time to approach each day with a sense of curiosity and a
growth mind set as we are all learning and adapting to the
changing circumstances. A sincere, heart felt thank you as I deeply
value everyone’s contribution to keep things ticking along.
I have had some questions from parents asking why the children
who come to school can’t be taught by their regular classroom
teacher. All of our students, whether at home or at school are
accessing the Class Notebook and learning tasks set by their
teacher. If our classroom teachers are directly teaching the
students who arrive each day, it would mean that the vast majority
of students learning at home (87%) would not have a connection to
their class teacher.
I would not like to disadvantage the students learning at home, by
not having their class teacher supporting them. We all benefit from
a reduced number of students physically attending in the form of
social distancing. We do not have anywhere near enough learning
spaces if we have an increase of students attending to be able to
maintain social distancing as prescribed by our state and federal
governments.
Let me reassure parents again, that it is OK to get as little or as
much of the learning sent home completed. The well-being of your
family is the number one priority.
Waiting List
Traditionally our waiting list opens on the second Wednesday of
Term 2 and we ask parents to come to our school’s Administration
Office to complete a Wait List form.
This year, we will have an electronic waiting list as we do not want
people lining up outside or to disadvantage people who are self-
isolating.
We are asking parents to email their child’s name after 9:00 am
on Wednesday, 29 April 2020. To be fair to everyone, we
cannot accept any applications to the waiting list before this time.
We will reply to each email in the order that they are received with
a numbered waiting list form that we ask parents to return to the
office as soon as possible.
The waiting list is only for any families who live outside of the
catchment area, wanting to enrol their child at Samford State
School to commence in 2021. If you live outside our catchment
area, but already have other children currently attending, and
staying on in 2021, you are exempt from our enrolment policy and
will have automatic entry. Under the sibling policy you do not have
to go on the waiting list.

Mother’s Day Stall
Our Mother's Day stall is something the
children really look forward to... It seems a
shame that they miss out on thanking theirs
Mum and Grandmothers for everything they
do! We are currently working towards an
online ordering system through QKR and a drive-up collection of
gifts (or delivering to classrooms for children at school).
Bundle packs for $5, $10, $15, $20 etc are being made and children
will receive an email about the Mother’s Day stall via their school
email address, which will give a description of what’s in each pack.
Payment will be available via QKR or upon pick-up (correct money
will be required). Items in the packs will unfortunately not be able to
be swapped.
The bundle packs will be wrapped and will be either made
available to children attending school on Friday 8 May, or will be
able to be collected via a drive-up collection system on Thursday 7
May.
More information about
the process will be
provided in the email
your child will receive.

ICT Support
For ALL ICT support, please email us at [email protected] . This comes to myself (even when I’m at Albany Creek State
School during the first half of the week), Jodie (works Monday - Wednesday) and Michael (Wednesday and Thursday). Please don’t email
class teachers or me directly (three heads are better than one). This includes password resets and Spelling City issues.
Online Learning
Thanks for your perseverance and problem-solving skills navigating online learning. Online learning is a whole new way of teaching,
amongst a new way of socially-isolated living. It’s uncomfortable and uncertain for many. It’s important to recognise those feelings, do
what you can and take things a step at a time.
As you may have experienced, the servers dedicated to Education Queensland have struggled with the quantity of online traffic . They’ve
never been tested like they have at the moment.
Here’s some sanity-saving tips:
Sync to and from the app, when possible (not with school-borrowed iPads or laptops – see Further Details 1). See Further Details 2 for guidance with this.
Passwords for students that borrowed school laptops are on the label attached to the device (“Samford.Loan” and a number).
iPad Program 2020 (For Year 4 Families)
We are still awaiting the Apple Pencils and 128Gb iPads. We were told early April. We’re still waiting (I’ll follow up on this).
When the Apple Pencils arrive, we’ll label pencils, record serial numbers and contact you for collection. Take care of the caps (they are a choking hazard) and charging in the iPad (see Further Details 3). Pencils will pair with the iPad when inserted. Insert and remove with care.
When the 128Gb iPads arrive, we’ll send them for deployment, then label and case them. We’ll also ask for any other iPads people have bought that haven’t been prepared yet. Thanks for your patience.
Please drop any ‘Student Responsible Use Agreement’ forms to the office. These were distributed when iPads were collected from the payments window.
If you are still yet to collect the iPad (excluding the Per Term 128Gb devices), see staff at the payments window.
Premiers Coding Challenge
The challenge has begun! Last year, students from Samford State School won top prizes in two categories. Code an interactive game to
teach others about cybersafety (staying safe online). Find out more here.
Further Details 1. The school made the decision early to lend these devices to families before the Easter break. As such, our technician had 2 days
to prepare 50+ laptops for home use. This was already a time-consuming job as each device had to be prepared for each
particular student using it. To upgrade OneNote would have required each laptop to be completely re-built with the latest MOE
(Managed Operating Environment) upgrade, supplied by the Department. There was simply no way this could have been done in
the time-frame provided. As you can appreciate, our technician is already working flat out to deal with the current influx of technical
support issues and is unable to upgrade the laptops at this time.
2. Here’s the recommended process: start online – open in app (syncs to the device) – do the work (this is on the device) – finish
online (syncs back to the online version). We suggest going to the online version in the evening, open the new content in the app
("Open In App") and then work in the offline app the next day. When they go to OneNote online each night, everything will sync
and they can retrieve the new work for the next day. This will avoid peak online traffic times.
3. Each Apple Pencil has an adaptor that fits on the end of the charger (feel it click into place). The Pencil fits into the other end.
Stay safe and take care,

Welcome Back
Welcome back to another busy term in the library. Although our physical library isn’t operating as normal, all children have access to our
e-library through SORA. This is a digital library which gives children access to an extensive collection of books in which to borrow from.
Each child can borrow up to 10 books at a time. As there is a high demand for many titles, please return as soon as your child has
finished reading their book.
There is a link through the Library page in your child’s Class Notebook. It will look similar to the following:

Belonging and Connecting
Vision Themed Photos
We know that belonging and connecting are essential ingredients to learning
success. Together with motivation and engagement, they play an important part in
your child’s learning progress and success.
During this period of learning at home, we will continue to support you and your
child to remain connected as a school community.
Last term we began our priority to Belong and Connect, when we collated our first
Learning at Home Video of our Samford State School students. Thank you to the
parents who shared a photo.
This term, we will continue to collate and share a video of our students learning at
home. We have a different theme organised each week from our school vision.
Send in your photos by Thursday 9:00am of each week to:
[email protected]. Please understand that by sending a photo to the
above address you are consenting for it to be shared to our school community.
Week 1 and 2 photos are due by 9:00am Thursday 30 April.
WEEK 1 Growth Mindset
The power of yet! What’s something you can’t do yet
but you know with practice will improve? Maybe you’re
learning how to pedal your bike standing up or you’ve
been working hard to learn your times tables. Perhaps
you’ve been putting in a lot of effort with your reading
or handwriting or have been persisting with a difficult
jigsaw puzzle.
Share a photo of you having a go, persisting or
trying again. Send your photo to
[email protected] by 9:00am Thursday
30 April!

School Vision - Growth Mindset
Growth Mindset
As we faced a very different Monday morning this week, there’s a
good chance that our mindsets were much more observable than
usual. I know in our household that the schedule we had prepared
didn’t go as smoothly as we had hoped. We all experienced the
state-wide issue of accessing class notebook and perhaps this
was combined with other personal challenges of adjusting to a new
routine. It is in these trying circumstances, the influence of our
mind-set is demonstrated in the ways we respond to challenges.
If you felt challenged this week but believe that problems are par for the course and responded by being persistent or flexible in your
approach, you are likely to have a growth mind-set. If you felt challenged this week and were thinking that things shouldn’t be this hard or
that you are simply not good with technology and wanted to give up on it all, you are more likely to have a fixed mind-set. People with a
fixed mind-set believe their abilities are set in stone whereas people with a growth mind-set believe their abilities grow with effort and
persistence. A growth mind-set is a powerful way of thinking that helps us to believe in our capacity to change and to overcome
challenges. As a school community, growth mind-set is one of our core values because we understand how it transforms both learning and
mental wellbeing.
Developing positive self-talk or learning to reprogram unhelpful thinking is key to building a growth mind-set. It takes practice to watch your
thinking and to challenge thoughts that occur automatically and often without our full awareness. The following prompts may be helpful in
supporting the development of growth mind-set thinking.
BUILDING GROWTH MIND-SET THINKING
You may ask ‘What’s your mind telling you?’ and ‘How do you want to respond?’
Instead of saying… Try saying…
I’m stupid at this... I don’t have to be perfect, I’ll just give it a go
I can’t do this… What am I missing?
I’ll never understand this I’ll try this one step at a time
This is so hard, I give up This is hard but I’ll stick with it
This is really boring I might not feel like it but I’ll keep at it
Deb Rennick

Family conversation starters
Begin the day with these questions: One thing I can get excited about today is... What kind of person do I want to be today? A situation or task that might be stressful today
is....and the way my best self could deal with that is..
End the day with these questions: A situation or task that I handled well today
was… Something I realised or learned today was…

World’s Greatest Shave
Well Done Jack B of 6A!
On Saturday morning, 28 March 2020, Jack B of 6A took part in the World’s Greatest
Shave and shaved his head! Jack enlisted the help of Scotty Barberinos Barber Shop,
who donated their time to make sure Jack’s mission was a successful one. And a
successful one it was! Jack managed to raise a huge $734.06 for cancer research. Well
done Jack!
Jack would like to thank everyone who helped him raise
awareness and money for such a worthwhile cause.
Easter Hat Celebrations
Bonnets Galore!
It seems nothing could put a dampener on the Samford State School annual Easter Hat celebrations!
On the last day of Term 1, students at school enjoyed showing off their wonderful Easter hat creations. Students at home also participated
in their very first ‘on-line’ Easter Hat celebration. And oh what a celebration it was! Easter bunnies and eggs were the popular choice of
decoration with a few carrots and chickens thrown in for good measure.
It was lovely to see such amazing creative talent (and such big smiles too!)
What Will Chaplaincy Look Like This Term?
The Chaplaincy service will continue to support students and staff this term, as well as organising online resources for teachers. For this
term, I have created my own Chaplaincy One Note to provide teachers with optional extra resources they may choose to use in their
online classrooms. This includes craft activities, indoor/outdoor games, mindfulness activities, zoo and museum live streaming links and
much more.
I will also be working closely with our Guidance Officer, Deb Rennick, to provide support for students, families and staff through regular
encouragements, phone calls and emailed resources. If you would like more information about the Chaplaincy service or would l ike to
contact me, please email [email protected] or contact the school by phone on Monday, Tuesday or Thursday.
Fortnightly Chaplaincy Activities
A fortnightly chaplaincy activity sheet as well as an
“Animal a day Fun Fact” are available for families
and will also be available to teachers. If you would
like to receive these activities via email please
contact me on [email protected].

Treasure Island Day
Treasure Island day proved to be a really amazing day with digging for gold and making treasure box origami.
We played cannon ball toss and ship to shore on the day as well.
Incursions
Because we were unable to have incursions come into OSHC we ordered in what we needed and were able to conduct our own
incursions. Over the holidays we were able to be Professors and make dancing blobs, never-melting snowmen and some oozing slime.
We also painted our own money boxes choosing from frogs, pigs, dogs and monsters.

Themed Days
For our other themed days we created our own photo booth,
participated in billy cart races down the hill at the back of the library,
created some coffee scrub and cooked some yummy cookies and
cakes to share at afternoon tea.
Easter
Other adventures enjoyed were easter egg hunts, we painted our
easter egg rocks, and of course we made some easter baskets
to fill with delicious easter eggs.
Attitude of Gratitude
Put some gratitude into your attitude!
There is ALWAYS something to be thankful for! Take a moment to appreciate the things in your life
that bring you comfort, joy and meaning.
Please email what you’re grateful for to [email protected] and it will appear
anonymously here next fortnight.
Just wanted to say a big thank you for all your efforts to help us get schooling online for home. It’s been a very unsettling
time for everyone. I have had to up end my entire business and staff and get us all working from home whilst trying not to
lose my entire retail client base at the same time. It has been extremely stressful but happy to say we as a business are
getting there. Knowing that the school was working to get the kids schooling online and the ample amount of information and
support you guys have provided has made this whole situation so much easier. I just wanted to make sure you all knew that
we really appreciate everything you have done. You have been absolutely wonderful. Thankyou.
Thank you for all the effort and support.
Thank you to all the staff for your care and hard work to help the kids continue to learn.
Thank you - the boys are enjoying the school of the air!
Just want to say thank you to all staff. What a crazy journey we are all on.
I just wanted to share with you some positivity I heard from my son John and two of his year one friends today. Despite the
uncertainty and changes they are going through, they've all come home saying they've made new friends! I think this is
something wonderful coming out of a very difficult time. I believe the kids of Samford State School will come out of this more
resilient and with new, stronger friendships and that is credit to all the dedicated staff keeping school life happy and
enjoyable for them. All the best and thank you.
As an active grandparent in the Samford school with three of my beloved grandchildren attending Samford State school I just
wanted to say thank you for all the amazing effort everyone at Samford - Principals, teachers, admin and office staff and
cleaners and everyone involved, thank you, thank you, for all you have done to keep our children safe during these
unprecedented times. I am privileged to be able to help look after my grandchildren and I hope this will lighten your load
even by the smallest amount. I cannot even imagine the stress you have all been under. It is beyond comprehension. I
hope you and your loved ones keep safe and well and one day we will be able to return to normal life at this wonderful
school. God bless you all and thank you from my heart.
Thank you for all the updates and the positive messages!
A huge thank you to all the team at Samford! What a time and you’re handling it beautifully.
Thank you for all that you continue to do for our children and community.
You guys are all doing an amazing job and I especially love the caring tone portrayed. Thank you, it means a lot.
It’s been an extraordinary life event. One we will all remember. Samford State School have really blown us all away with the
handling of very difficult circumstances, and how effective the solution has been. Sincere thanks.
I just wanted to say thank you so much to you all at school. Brad, Adrian, Justin and Jannice Shackleton (5E) have been
amazing and I just want to let you know the appreciation I have for all the teaching, library and admin staff at our beautiful
school. That video made me cry so much as we miss seeing everyone but I know we’re all in this together. Such a lovely
video seeing everyone else working from home.
I am so very grateful for all your help, each and every member of Samford State School team.
Attitude of Gratitude
Happy and safe holiday break for all the amazing staff at Samford State School. Thank you for
the very moving video of all the home life learning - it brought tears to our eyes!!! We are in this
together, and we wouldn’t want to be with any other school during such a crisis.
We just wanted to express how grateful we are of the amazing effort all the school staff have
and are putting into pivoting so quickly to this situation. You must have all had to work extremely hard
to make this happen. The amount of information that has been provided from the school and the
teacher has been amazing – almost too much! There is a lot to absorb but it is not about getting it all
right immediately but trial and error until we all have it worked out. The only frustrations we have are of
the system being inaccessible due to demand, which of course is not a reflection on all the work that
you have all done. We just want you to know that we appreciate everything you have all done and hope that knowing this
brings some smiles to all your faces. Please pass on our thanks to all the team.
I would just like to express my thanks and gratitude to the teachers and OSHC staff who showed up this week to provide
continuity of care and support for my child and a number of other children whose parents are fortunate enough to still have a
job in these trying times. As a solo parent with very little external support, juggling my 7 year old, 11 month old and keeping
my business afloat has been challenging, but without the support of our amazing school and its people, it would be
impossible. You are your staff are doing an incredible job navigating these uncharted waters. So I thank you. I too am
grateful to be part of such a caring, resilient community.
Thankyou for all the efforts you have put into our children in recent weeks (and well beyond that of course). This was never
foreseen to be apart of your workload and it doesn't go unnoticed. Please know that you all matter, immensely, to our
children and to us. Please stay well and take care of yourselves and know that we will be greeting you with big smiles and
huge thankyou's upon our return. You are doing an exceptional job in exceptional circumstances. Thankyou!
Despite the hiccups, everyone has done an amazing job at preparing all this so quickly. Samford State School was up and
running with online learning far before a lot of my friends’ schools and the communication has been amazing. Our teachers
(Prep D and 2D) have gone above and beyond with their support and kindness and commitment to this learning and the kids
and their positive attitude has stayed strong. I myself have had trouble with One Note but I figure it’s only day 2 and it will
work out eventually/somehow. Thanks for all your support and hard work. I understand all the staff would ’ve been doing
extra work through their break due to this.
You are all doing a mindbendingly fantastic job at the moment and have adapted with speed and efficiency to changing
circumstances and to the EQ servers having a bit of a moment. We very much appreciate everything the people at Samford
State School are doing to support our kids. My children are really enjoying their learning so far this week, they're trying hard,
continuing to grow in their learning, and are enjoying it (even though they miss their teachers and classmates). They are
looking up at the positive modelling displayed by the teachers, and are also adapting to the changes smoothly because they
feel safe, they feel a sense of belonging, and they feel that the teachers have got this in hand. The kids are so very fortunate
to be at such a proactive, progressive and effective school, where the teachers are passionate about learning and genuinely
care about the kids.
Gratitude towards Justin - I was testing the laptops on Friday of last week and couldn't log-on to. I sent Justin an email early
that morning, expecting that we may get a response some time late this week, if we were lucky (as he must have been so
busy with the online learning). To my surprise, the phone rang after 0900 on Friday morning, with Justin cheerfully resetting
the password in a flash over the phone! I was blown away that he was at work that day and by the speed of response to our
difficulties, and to me, this is just another demonstration of how amazing, and caring, the Samford teachers are. Technology
isn't my forte at all (that's putting it mildly), and I was so worried that my luddite ways with technology would let the kids
down. However, after that phone call and Justin's help, I felt like we could do this.
I appreciate the emails and reminders that learning will look different within each family. Thank you for taking the pressure
off.
Thank you for all the hard work. There are so many learning tools available and it doesn't always have to be online.
I just wanted to extend my thanks to everyone for the incredible work they have put in to support students to learn at home. I
have been blown away by everything that has been done (I have Mrs Maguire and Mrs Field) and the work that has been
able to filter through has been detailed and engaging. I feel so much for the teachers that their hard work is not able to be
fully utilised due to server congestion. Thank you so much again.

All states and territories' RSL branches have cancelled public Anzac Day services. Instead, they have joined other groups in asking Australians to unite in recognising all armed services personnel by standing on their driveways at 6:00am for a combined dawn service. "As a result of restrictions to this year's formal Anzac Day commemorations, the RSL encourages people to light up the dawn and remember and pay respects from home," an RSL South Australia spokesman said.
"This can take several forms including from the end of your driveway or within your home, with a candle or the light on your phone."
RSL SA said the qualities of the Anzac spirit — courage, endurance, humour, ingenuity, and mateship — were particularly applicable for Australians amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Community Notices
History shows that each major outbreak is different and, just like previous outbreaks, we don’t know how this one will end. The fallout of any disease largely depends on other circumstances – when we catch it, how contagious and fatal it is, how hygienic people are, and how quickly a vaccine or cure becomes available. But there’s one thing that a disease, or any other crisis for that matter, can’t break … and that’s the connection we have as human beings and our ability to help and support one another through tough times. COVID-19 is affecting our Samford Community in many ways and those affects change weekly, if not daily. Responding to these affects at a local level is imperative as each community is different and has its own issues and needs in regards to this disease.
With the Samford Support Network (SSN) coordinating the community response, a number of local businesses, professionals and community organisations have come together to provide a response service for members of the community who are struggling due to self-isolation (be it voluntary or otherwise). This service ensures they receive basic requirements such as food and medication. The service will also offer emotional and psychological support to the community.
The Samford COVID-19 Response Plan is aimed at capturing the scope, actions and control measures for coordinating available volunteer resources in the Samford area and responding to urgent requests for assistance. Initially, community members in the following suburbs are covered by this plan: Samford Village, Samford Valley, Wights Mountain, Camp Mountain, Highvale, Closeburn, Cedar Creek, Yugar and Draper. For up-to-date information from the COVID-19 Samford Response Service, please use the contact details above and follow the SSN Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/samfordsupportnetwork/ Volunteers are the heart and soul behind any successful community response, and the SSN will need additional volunteers for this service. If you would like to help, please visit the SSN Covid-19 website at https://samfordsupportnetwork.com/covid-19/ and complete the online application form. Other relevant links include:
