Buses will be ready to take any students who do not plan to attend the football game home

Greetings VAHS families and students. The Student Services team is very excited to welcome you ALL back to a wonder-ful school year! In addition to welcoming VAHS families and students back to Wildcat Country, the Student Services team would also like to welcome new VAHS Counselor, Ms. Lesley Morrison-Grams (serving students with last names of A-Fe) and our new VAHS Social Worker, Ms. Andrea Bonaparte (serving students with last names of Li-Z).
During this time students and families often have a lot of questions about making adjustments to class schedules. The amazing Counseling team will be making schedule adjustments based on the following policy: Policy for Schedule Adjustments Students are welcomed to come into the Student Services Office beginning on Wednesday, Septem-ber 2nd—Friday, September 4th, to make an appointment with their assigned counselor. Schedule adjustments MUST BE SCHEDULED WITHIN THE FIRST 3 DAYS OF SCHOOL. Schedules will not be adjusted or changed via phone call or email. Please note that schedule changes will be made ONLY for the following reasons: 1. Failure of the student to meet proper course prerequisites 2. A different course is needed as a result of failure or deficiency toward graduation requirements 3. Class conflicts (two classes scheduled during the same period) 4. Recommendation of a post-secondary institution and mandatory for admission consideration 5. Desire to strengthen a schedule and not take a study hall 6. Requests a study hall and does not have one within their schedule 7. Completed a course during summer school, or through correspondence work and a class is no
longer needed (official documentation from the institution where the course was taken is needed for any level of consideration to be given toward such a request)
8. Teacher recommendation that confirms the original placement was not appropriate 9. Extenuating circumstances that do not fall into a category noted above must be submitted in writ-
ing to your grade level counselor All appeals must be signed by a parent/guardian before they will be considered. Your counselor will review and determine if the appeal will be brought before an administrator for final consideration. Appeals will only be presented to administrators via counselors. Schedule adjustments will NOT be considered or allowed for the following reasons 1. Student wishes to change to improve grade point average 2. Student states that the class is not what one thought it would be or one does not like the class 3. Student states that the class is getting too hard 4. Student states that they have changed their mind about the class 5. Student concerns with the teacher assignment 6. Student is unhappy with the lunch period assignment 7. Student has concerns relating to members of a given class 8. Student desires to have the same teacher all year or class the same block all year 9. Student desires to have a release period/study hall/class or a responsibility pass during specific
period

Student council kicked things off in mid-August this year with a summer meeting to brainstorm events and fundraisers for the school year, but most importantly to plan homecoming!
Homecoming week (spirit days, the pep rally, the football game, and the dance) are what most students look forward to in the first few weeks of school.
Homecoming Spirit Week:
Monday, October 5—Pajama Day (school appropriate)
Tuesday, October 6—Tourist Day which involves breaking out all the old maps, bucket hats, sunglasses, and Hawaiian shirts
Wednesday, October 7—Decade Day wear anything from a 1920s flapper dress to 80s workout clothes!
Thursday, October 8—Class Color Day or for Seniors...Toga Day!
Freshman—Green, or favorite senior shirt
Sophomores—Red
Juniors—Blue
Friday, October 9—The school week wraps up with wildcat pride day, the pep rally, parade, and the football game.
Saturday the 10th will be a busy day for student council, as before the dance (which is 8-11pm) members can volunteer to set up the gym and commons and decorate it for this year’s nautical theme, “Sail Through the Night”. The song for this year is appropriately sea-themed: Swallowed in the Sea by Coldplay. After homecoming, student council will have more time to focus on fundraisers and other school wide events, but for the upcoming month and a half homecoming is the focus!

Athletic Fees and Booster Clubs, by Mark Kryka, Athletic and Activities Director
Fees, uniform costs, equipment costs, athletic trainer costs, and tournament entry fees
all increased, and have continued to do so. Hence, the athletic fees are used to cover
the areas where the budget falls short. Following the cost of transportation, athletic
fees are used to replace uniforms, pay officials and so on. Since this is always a tight
situation, booster clubs work to support and supplement individual programs.
Booster clubs have become a very important part of the athletics program. As the ath-
letic budget has had to cover many of the increases in areas listed above, with a lim-
ited budget, teams have taken on more expenses that could no longer be covered.
Many of the boosters do ask for a yearly booster fee which helps pay for things that the
budget does not cover, and most provide an itemized list of what the fee is used for. It
may pay for additional coaches, practice gear, hats, shirts and team meals after con-
tests. Parents are encouraged to participate in the booster activities to enjoy a better
sense of what the booster clubs do and enjoy the work to promote their child’s activity.

Important Yearbook Information for The Class of 2016
To all Verona Area High School 2015-2016 Seniors and their Parents/Guardians:
This is to inform you that senior portraits will be in color in our yearbook. Because of the deadline for color pages in the yearbook, it is important that we receive your portraits by Thursday, September 10, 2015.
We are asking all seniors to bring in one vertical wallet size color photo (like the sample shown on the right) , or you can send the photo electronically, bring in on a CD, or have your portrait studio send it to us by Thursday, September 10, 2015. If you would like to send the photo electronically, please make certain the photo resolution quality is at least 300 DPI or higher and send it to the e-mail address listed below. Please note, we will not be returning this photo to you. If you submit your photo electronically, please name the photo last name, first name. If you submit your photo in hard copy format, please neatly write last name, first name on the photo. This is very important for organizational purposes.
Members of the senior class feel that it is very important to include all seniors. Therefore, although studio pictures are the most common, we encourage you to summit a photo even if not taken by a studio. Many students have a family friend or another student take their photo. When selecting a photo, we are asking all seniors to submit a photo that is waist up. Since we use these photos in the Verona Press, on the “Big Screen” at graduation at EPIC, and possibly in the senior video, we are requesting that photos be waist up for consistency. In addition, all photos must be school appropriate. All photos are subject to approval by the VAHS administration. If you do not submit a photo, we will use the school Lifetouch photo that is taken during the 1st weeks of school. You will not have to submit your Lifetouch photo, we will have access to it. If you choose not to submit a photo, and you do not get your Lifetouch photo taken, you will not be pictured in any of these events/occasions.
Many photographers offer to send your photo directly to Verona Area High School. However, we recommend that you check with your photographer to make certain they plan to send it by Thursday, September 10, 2015. Please keep in mind that because of our color production schedule, we MUST adhere to these deadlines. Also keep in mind that studios fill up quickly in the summer, so make your appointment early.
Please let your studio know about the DEADLINE. It is important that they realize that our senior picture section will be in color, as it has been the past few years. Also, remember that photos need to be vertical, not horizontal.
If you have any questions about this, please call Rita Mortenson at 845-4445
I would be happy to answer any questions you might have.
How do you submit your photos? Either bring in a digital or paper copy to the high school main office
or you can e-mail all photos to

YOUTH OPTIONS PROGRAM AND DEADLINES FOR STUDENTS:
The Youth Options Program allows high school juniors and seniors to enroll at an institution of higher education in Wisconsin. Under the program, certain approved courses may be taken, without cost, that lead to credit that can be applied toward high school graduation, as well as toward post-secondary programs. A student who intends to enroll in the University of Wisconsin at Madison, Edgewood College, or Madison Area Technical College in the spring semester of the school year 2015-2016 must adhere to the following timelines:
1. Make an appointment with your guidance counselor to discuss your plans and choose courses that work with your graduation pathway.
2. Contact the Admission Office of the college/university or vocational/technical college from which admission is being sought to determine that application and admission process required by that institution.
3. By October 1, 2015:
• Notify your counselor at Verona Area High School of your intention to attend a college or university named above for the spring semester of the school year 2015-16 under this program. Use Form PI-8700A which can be secured from your student’s counselor or by going to the website http://www.dpi.state.wi.us/youthoptions/index.html
• Please complete the form carefully and turn in to your counselor. Select a course(s) that is either different from any course, or is an extension (higher level) of a course the high school offers. Fifteen credits per student is the maximum allowed each semester.
4. By November 13, 2015, you will be notified of the action taken by the Board of Education as to whether or not the course(s) you selected will be awarded high school credit and how much credit you will be awarded. You may register only for courses that have been approved by the Board of Education.
5. If the Board of Education denies either the desired courses or the number of high school credits awarded, the pupil may appeal the school board’s decision to the state superintendent of schools within 30 days after the receipt of the school board’s decision.
If you have any questions regarding the Youth Options Program, please contact your high school counselor by dialing 845-4430.

Plans are well underway for the iPad rollout set for this fall. This summer, over 300 staff members district-wide attended iPad training in preparation for the 1st phase of the K-12 iPad rollout scheduled to begin in September. Teachers had the opportunity to attend a wide variety of courses to learn the potential of the iPad. Courses included iPad Essentials, What’s in Every Student’s Digital Backpack, Reading Writing and Research on the iPad, and Enhancing Productivity and Collaboration, to name a few.
Rollout Schedule
At the high school, all freshmen and sophomores will
receive iPads as the district moves to a 1:1 program. In August and early September, parents were asked to attend an information meeting. At the meeting, they were provided information to sign up for an insurance plan (at a cost of $20) and learn about other necessary details for the successful implementation of this program. During the first two weeks of the school year, the technology coordinator will team up with the English and Social Studies classes to distribute the iPads to all freshmen and sophomores. At this time, training will also be provided. Students will then be able to take the iPads home for the remainder of the school year.

“My learners have been able to access information which is more appropriate for their own learning styles. I am able to spend more time creating lessons instead of photocopying paper to hand out. I am able to give all of my materials through the iPad, and students are able to turn in as well. This reduces the amount of paper I am using.”
- Mr. Matt Austin

2014-2015 Freshmen Survey Results Summarized • VAHS
iPad Survey Results
Students share what they liked about the iPad.
“I learned more with the iPad because it allowed me to look up things to learn more about them.”
“Not only did I constantly research things to get deeper into the subject but I also had some creativity by having multiple media presentation possibilities.”
“I did more learning by looking for resources than I have done any other year. I feel like I learned a lot from making projects vs. memorizing for tests.”
“It was a lot easier to contact our teacher to ask questions and being able to access the internet at school.”
“There's room for more creativity. The best thing for me was being able to do many different forms of projects on the iPad.”
Over 100 students participated in this survey the last week of school!
It was really helpful to be able to have your
work on the iPad at school and then bring it home and pick up where you
left off.

Life Threatening Allergies This is a reminder to parents that we have students at the High School with life threatening allergies. Foods that most often cause reactions are peanuts and tree nuts, fish and shellfish, milk, eggs, wheat, and soy. Ingestion of the food allergen is the principal route of exposure; however, it is possible for a student to react to touching the offending food. Students should wash their hands if they have food on their hands after eating. The district food service has removed peanuts, tree nuts, and fish from the items served. Tree nuts include: Almond Beechnut - risk unknown Brazil nut Bush nut Butternut - risk unknown Cashew Chestnut Coconut - risk unknown Filbert (Hazelnut) Hickory nut - risk unknown Lichee nut - risk unknown Macadamia nut Nangai nut Pecan Pine nut Pistachio Shea nut (found in soaps and lotions) Walnut Nut proteins are the part of the nut that causes a reaction. Tree nut oils may contain nut protein and should be avoided. Avoid natural extracts such as pure almond extract and natural wintergreen extract (filbert/hazelnut). Imitation or artificially flavored extracts are generally safe. The following are not "nuts" - nutmeg, water chestnuts, butternut squash. The most common non-food allergen is latex. “Dipped” latex products most often trigger allergic reactions. These soft, stretchy products contain high levels of the latex protein. We have students with severe allergies to latex. Please consider this when you bring in decorations and gifts for classroom parties. Latex balloons, Koosh balls, rubber cement and any other items containing soft latex are not allowed. Thank you, The VASD nurses
