1. Welcome to the BA (Hons) Ballet Education Programme Dear Students, I have the great pleasure of welcoming you to the Faculty of Education at the Royal Academy of Dance, and in particular to the BA (Hons) Ballet Education programme. It is my sincere wish that you will find creative inspiration, collegial motivation and academic stimulation amongst other rewarding experiences being a student at the Royal Academy of Dance can provide. Along with these rewarding experiences on the BA (Hons) Ballet Education programme you will also find many worthwhile challenges and it is imperative that from the outset you become familiar with your programme of study, manage your time effectively and that you engage proactively with the high quality teaching, which is a hallmark of the Faculty of Education. In your Welcome Pack, you will find your Induction Week timetable, a Class Timetable for semester 1 of the academic year, an Equipment/ Clothing List, a Reading List and other pertinent information. The Induction Week timetable runs from 15th- 19th September 2014. When you arrive at the RAD on your first day, you should go to Reception and sign in. The Receptionist will then direct you to Cormani where you will complete your registration. It is important that you have all of the necessary documentation which Registry has asked you to produce. During the exciting sessions we have planned for you throughout your Induction Week you will be introduced to many of the tutors you will be working with over the next three years. I hope you will take this opportunity to get to know both the academic and administrative staff who will support you during your time at the RAD as well as your colleagues who are joining you on your programme of study. You will be spending a significant part of the next three years with the same cohort and, as it can be expected, each cohort becomes something of a family. I advise you to come with an open mind and a willingness to participate from the moment you walk through the doors of the RAD headquarters. I would also advise you to bring a 10 (cash) returnable deposit with you for your locker keys and your practical dance kit to store in your locker which will be assigned to you at Registration as you will be participating in movement based classes from the first day of the Induction Week. In preparation for the academic year, please note the following important dates and please do not book flights home before consulting your schedule and these important dates:

As a student on the programme, you are expected to be in full attendance for the specified dates and for any evening visits to performances and teaching practices or class observations. As you can see in the provided attendance policy at the RAD unauthorised absences are taken very seriously as we wish you to engage fully to make the most of your programme of study. Prior to the start of the Induction Week, I encourage you to access the RAD Faculty of Education Website at http://www.radeducation.org.uk/.There you can find all the relevant information you may want to retrieve before arriving on site. The A-Z of Q and A is always a great place to start and, as you will be using the website often throughout your programme of study, I would strongly suggest finding time to familiarise yourself with it as soon as you can. As Programme Manager I will not only oversee the management of the BA (Hons) Ballet Education programme across all three years of study, but I will also be your Level Coordinator and I will work with your year group throughout your time at the RAD to provide guidance in academic as well as pastoral day-to-day matters. 4. Attendance Policy
Attendance at Timetabled Sessions The University Regulations require that students participate fully in the work of their programme. Where a student fails to participate in the learning opportunities available the RAD will make enquiries into their participation and attendance and where there are no extenuating circumstances may terminate the students registration on the programme. As a student of the programme you are expected to attend all timetabled sessions and professional placements. Attendance is recorded and monitored by your individual tutors and any attendance issues for medical or personal reasons must be approved by the Programme Manager. You are expected to remain in attendance throughout the designated time span of each term, including both onsite taught sessions and all required professional placements. Repeated absence may be deemed as grounds for suspension or termination by the Board of Examiners should acceptable reasons not be forthcoming. This requirement is deemed to cover all formal requirements of the programme, including experience in off-site placements and programme-related visits. Other than in exceptional circumstances the registration of a student may not be terminated unless adequate written warning has been given and the student has, where practicable, been given the opportunity to remedy the situation either by starting to attend taught sessions, or at the discretion of the Dean by making up any missed compulsory attendance. If this involves retaking the complete module at the next available opportunity, a re-sit fee will apply. Please note, if examinations are required to be rescheduled (for example due to adverse weather), they may be re-scheduled into any week of the semester. In the event of unforeseen disruption (e.g. adverse weather), unless the RAD is closed for academic purposes, the timetable will continue as previously advertised. If you are unable to attend any sessions in these circumstances you will need to catch up once you have returned. The RAD is required to advise the UK Border Agency of all international students who are under immigration control and to advise the local authorities of those students receiving loans, grants or payment of fees, and of those students who are not attending their programme as required. If you are frequently absent from classes, or from the RAD without permission during term time, you could be asked to repay your loans, grants and fees or you may not renew your student visa to complete your studies as an international student. All fees are reviewed annually and revised (i.e. increased) fees will be payable by all students admitted to, or continuing on, programmes in subsequent academic sessions. 5. BA (Hons) Ballet Education Reading list The following reading list indicates key texts that you will find beneficial for your studies throughout the three years of the programme and beyond. Many of the texts are available for purchase from the Royal Academy of Dance shop at a 10% discount, once you have registered your place on the programme. Alternatively, books may be purchased from www.amazon.co.uk or www.amazon.com. Some are available more cheaply as second-hand copies, and some are available in Kindle format. Rather than purchase all of the books on this list, we recommend that you wait until you receive your Programme Handbook, timetable and module reading lists to find out which specific texts are required and for which term of study. You will not receive this information until Induction Week, so if you are interested in getting a head start on your reading, browse the internet for further detail on the texts below and select those that you find particularly interesting. 6. Equipment/Clothing List Requirements for practical classes: Ballet (Females):
Black and dark coloured leotards in any classical style, at least one without sleeves (please note that criss-cross straps, halter-neck styles and bra strap revealing leotards are not desirable)

As a full-time student at the RAD, you are eligible for a 10% discount on purchases from the RAD shop once you have registered on the programme. 7. Travelling to the RAD
The map below shows the location of the Royal Academy of Dance in Battersea Square, London. This map provides information regarding local transport. As you will see, the nearest mainline station is Clapham Junction. The 170 bus runs from Clapham Junction to Vicarage Crescent and stops right outside the cobbled entrance to the Academy. If you prefer to walk from Clapham Junction, you will need to walk down Falcon Road, cross over Battersea Park Road and continue walking in the same direction along Battersea High Street until you reach Battersea Square. Bear left on the Square past the Italian restaurant and the dental clinic and turn left into the courtyard. The RAD main reception is at the far end of the courtyard.
The nearest underground railway station is South Kensington station (Piccadilly, District and Circle lines). The number 49 and 345 buses run from South Kensington to Battersea Bridge Road. You need to get off at the stop immediately after the bus has crossed the River Thames and then turn right on Battersea Church Road for the shortest route to the Academy.
