“I think a few hours )uietly analysing what they are really good at, and what they want todo, is critical.(

“$andidates should sit down and ask themselves * what am I good at+ hat do I want to do+ hat environment do I want to do it in+(

“ e are looking for students who can be enthusiastic and can demonstrate they arecapable of making a positive contribution to our company. -ttitude is the key.(

Is a Year in Industry a "ood mo9e?

Year 8$ is a di icult time or students. There is the stress o achieving in their inal e!amsLthe pressure o ma'ing decisions about the ne!t stepL university or notL #hich universityL#hich courseS.. lthough The Year in Industry (YINI) has been operating or 2 yearsmany parents 'no# little about the scheme. This simple document aims to o er a littlee!tra in ormation to the parents o our registered students. Dhat is involved in securing aYINI placement or your son or daughterR Dill it be a #orth#hile e!perienceR Dhat arethe bene its li'ely to beR De 9uite understand that at such an important time both parentsand students #ant to have a clear picture o all available options so that in ormeddecisions can be made. I hope you #ill ind time to read the ollo#ing #hich is an honestappraisal o the various aspects o a Year in Industry placement.

The Year in Industry is an =:T programme along #ith *irst =dition ;o" =T 4pen

Industry the =ngineering =ducation cheme and @eadstart. =ach programme see's toencourage young people to ul ill their potential in cience =ngineering and Technology. The undamental aim o The Year in Industry is to encourage motivated enthusiastic andacademically-able students to#ards eventual careers in industry. lthough it #as originallyaimed at students in the Hshortage sub3ects o =ngineering and the ciences and the vastma3ority o our placements are still in these areas the scheme also o ers opportunities inmany di erent intended disciplines such as >ar'eting IT Natural ciences the onlylimiting actor is your son or daughter s pre erences.

What is in9ol9ed in securin" a YI I lacement?

    • De advise students to apply as early as possibleL rom the eptember #hen they startbac' in Year 8$. This gives them time to attend the Intervie# and CJ #or'shops and orthe YINI team to get to 'no# more about the type o placement the student is loo'ing orand #here. %ltimately the success #ill depend upon the right student in the rightplacement in the right company and this is #here our e!perience helps.• ter application and registration the students are intervie#ed and then sent a@andboo' (generally via email). This details the ne!t steps and gives handy hints onintervie# techni9ues. The student #ill also be sent hints to improving their CJ and invitedto attend one o the #or'shops run in the region.• The students commitment is vital in the process in inding a placement. YINIencourages them to be as proactive as possible. 4ur #ebsite is updated regularly #ithavailable placements. De #elcome regular contact rom students regarding vacanciesand i they have companies that they are interested in #or'ing or and the company is notyet part o the scheme then #e underta'e to approach that company on the student sbehal .• tudents are care ully selected or placements and are given the choice o being put

or#ard or notL they are also given the choice o attending intervie#s. De e!pect studentsto decide #ithin about "5 hours o receiving an o er o a placement to accept or re3ect thatplacement. The YINI egional 4 ice is available or advice at any stage o the process.@o#ever #e as' that #hen a placement is accepted that students honour that

acceptance and #ithdra# rom any applications they have made else#here.

    • Timing is an important part o the process. Companies start to advise us o theirre9uirements rom :ecember through to the ollo#ing summer. It is also common orselection and recruitment processes in companies to ta'e a considerable time. De #ouldbe absolutely delighted or e!ample i the ma3ority o our placements #ere con irmed by=aster but this tends to be the time #hen companies begin the process rather than inaliseit.

De understand that this long #ait during a year #hen they are already under considerablepressure causes additional #orry to our applicants especially i some o their riends arealready i!ed up. o allo#ing as much time as possible rather than rushing the process#ill help to ease this pressure and allo# a greater choice o companies.

    ( 1/ # ( 1 The Year ahead

The economic climate although improving is challenging to many at the current time#hether in education or industry. YINI has elt the impact too. De #ill endeavour tocontinue creating challenging and relevant placements but please note that #e cannotguarantee placements to all students.

    Will it be a 'orth'hile e erience?

    • Dith "$7 o students going onto @igher =ducation it is even more important orstudents to be able to di erentiate themselves rom other graduates. The student spersonal development - maturity con idence sel -esteem and many more - developenormously during the year. o o ten parents tell us o the di erence the year has made.=ven i their placement is not an e!act match #ith their intended sub3ect the generalpractical e!perience is ound to be o immense value.• Jirtually all universities li'e their students to have spent a pre-university year gaininge!perience and developing themselves. The Year in Industry scheme is highly regardedby many o the %& universities and indeed some o the ma3or =ngineering departments(e.g. at Cambridge and Imperial College) direct their students to apply to The Year inIndustry.• The students are employed by the companies. The salaries range rom M80 000 -M86 000 p.a. (208",2086 placements) but some companies choose to pay more. (I thestudent has to live a#ay rom home some companies #ill o er help but this is not are9uirement o the scheme). De o ten ind that the money is not the 'ey motivatorL manystudents #ant the e!perience to ensure that they are going in the right direction be oreincurring any tuition ees. @aving a goodU name on their CJ at this age is o ten theattraction too.• The Year in Industry is a national schemeL run regionally #hich o ers support to localstudents and those moving to ta'e up their placement. local >entor is assigned to eachstudent together #ith a member o the company. This is to ensure that the studentma!imises their placement and i they have any issues or concerns they have support todeal #ith these.
