Cœxistence of a University system and a « Grandes Ecoles » system

Universities :

• No selection at University at the entrance

(minimum requirement : secundary diploma = Baccalauréat)

• Universities offer education on fundamentals, technological programmes or professionnal programmes

• Cover all disciplines

• Students can prepare national degrees or specific degrees

• French universities host more than 1.5 million students.

Among them, approx 12 % of international students

Specialized « schools » created at the beginning of the 19th century,

• The « schools » are highly selective and host less students than universities.

• The « schools » are public or private institutions.

• They educate professionnals in domains as diverse as engineering, management, art, or architecture.

• The "Grandes Écoles" are among this category.

They constitute a French specificity: institutions that are original, prestigious and difficult to enter.

• Their students are particularly sought for on the international labor market.

French universities have harmonized their degrees to comply with the EuropeanSystem, by implementing:

Bachelor - Master - DoctorateLicence - Master - Doctorat (LMD)

Based on the coherence of degrees, it offers:• Possibility of comparisons of programmes and European equivalences,• Transparent transfer of credits,• Mobility of students.

The « Grandes Écoles » – what is that?

• Small size (at most 800 graduates per year)• HIGHLY competitive admission process after preparatory schools (2 years),

and national competitive examination

• five-year studies (but usually only 3 years in GE)• Obtention of an Engineering Degree validated by the accreditation board

« Commission des Titres d’Ingénieurs » (CTI), wich confers the grade de master (national degree, allowing direct access to PhD studies)

• an approach based on fundamentals: mathematics, physics.• degree comparable in educational level to a Master of Science, although it is

frequently broader in scope

General matters on the organization of studies

Organization of studies 1/2

Academic year – two semesters Semester 1 (Fall): September – end of January - LecturesSemester 2 (Spring): February – May/June – Master’s thesis

ECTS credits Each Educational Unit is defined in terms of ECTS credits and corresponds to the totality of the work to be done by a student

1 ECTS credits = approx. 25 hours of work (contact hours andpersonal work)

HolidaysFall break (Toussaint – All saints): one week – end of October/early

Exams A dedicated period at the end of the first semester (1st session) 1st session exams: late January - 2nd session: April

All the exams usually take place during more or less the same week Beware: several exams on the same day!

Organization of studies 2/2

standard duration 20 weeks – 30 ECTS

Putting into practise in a professional context all the acquired knowledge

Research or industrial projects

• Full time – from February to June

• Can be done anywhere, in France, or abroad

• Defense: end of June or early September (1 hour, with a 30-minute presentation, questions)

• Lists of subjects available, can also be found by personal contact

• Validation of your subject by the manager of your specialization

• If industrial project or oustide of Grenoble: you need to have a tutor

• Placement agreement between you /Ensimag or IM2AG/ host institution

All the information on rules, on-line application, databases to be found on the intranet + specific meetings will be organized by each program.

Organization of studies Master’s thesis

Education

Courses Attendance is compulsory ! Any absence must be reported and justified.

Main types of courses Lectures (cours magistraux) given in an amphitheatre, with a presentation given by a ProfessorTutorials (travaux dirigés) and lab work (travaux pratiques)

- small groups - implementation of theoretical knowledge presented during the lectures- usually you work with a « binôme » (group of 2 students)

The University Libraries are open: From 8h to 19h from Mondays to Fridays and from 9h to 13h on saturdays.Municipal libraries can also host students at daytime.

Some generalities

• The possibility of repeating a year (redoublement) is not automatic. The student has

to ask for it, and the jury decides.

• Exclusion can be decided by the jury (according to grades and behaviour)

• Any unexcused absence will be taken into account in the final grade

• In case of sickness: presentation of a medical certificate within 48h

• If sick during a 1st session exam: possible to take it during session 2

• Personal problem: please inform the professors in charge of your program, and your

contact person at the registrar ’s office

• Fraud: Disciplinary Board (from warning to exclusion)

Education

Continuous assessment, which allows tovalidate the achievements throughout the yearin each subject taught: oral participation,presentations, files, team work.

Exams, organized during a dedicated period atthe end of the first semester, they have toassess the whole knowledge acquired for eachsubject taken by the student

It is not possible to decide to go directly tosession 2!You have to go to exams! You cannot decide toskip a sessionAny unjustified absence for an examination willbe sanctioned by a 0/20.

Education

Pedagogical coherence (in a given module):- course / TD / TP/exam- grading : Final exam (written) + continuousassessment (TP, intermediary exam)

Studies - validation

Each exam receives a grade from 0 to 20This grade is communicated by the registrar’s office after the jury (posted on the year board, available on the intranet)Students have a two-week delay to ask for a discussion with the Professor in charge of the course.

A 2nd session is proposed to regular students who have failed the 1st sessionThe jury defines a program of exams to be taken againThe student has a delay of one week to ask for supplementary exams

One set of examination rules per specialization - please read it carefully!

One jury to evaluate study periods and grades: professors who teach in the program, professors in charge of the masters’ program.

One degree jury: which awards degrees.

Master rules 1/2

• A study year is composed of two periods (semesters)

• A study year is validated if all the periods (semesters) are validated

• A study period is composed of several Teaching Units (Unités d’Enseignement)

• A teaching unit in masters = a course

• A teaching unit is validated if the grade obtained is superior or equal to 10/20

• If a grade is < 7/20 : the student is called for the 2nd session

• The semester (study period) is validated if

• all the grades are superior or equal to 7/20 (automatic compensation applies then)

• By compensation, if the average of all Teaching units is superior or equal to 10/20

• One student can refuse this compensation and ask to retake exams during session 2 if he wants to improve his grades (for the grades which are between 7 and 10)

• The session 2 grade replaces the session 1 grade.

Master rules 2/2

There is no compensation between Periods

The jury is allowed to award « jury points »

• Only the students who validated all their yearly periods can be accepted in the next academic year or be awarded their degree

• Whatever the results obtained for a given period, students are allowed to continue

for the following period (in the same academic year)

The master’s degree is awarded with or without honours

16 > Very Good (Très bien)

14 < 16 Good (Bien)

12 < 14 Average (Assez Bien)

Degree grade = M2 average

French grading system

The grading scale is from 0 to 20. 20 stands for « an ideal exam». Usually the best grades are up to 16/20
