Welcome to

Ladonia Elementary!

Hello LES Parents/Guardians and Students:

Our theme for the 2018-19 school year is “Building Brighter Futures!” We

believe we can shape the future of our community by building strong

foundations of literacy and math for our students, while training them to be

model citizens in an ever-changing society through the study of science, social

studies, and character education. We want every Ladonia Tiger to be a champion

as we strive together to achieve excellence education!

This will be the third year of our “TIGER Teams” system. Year number

two was amazing, and the students enjoyed the comradery and competition, all

while living their daily life by the “TIGER 24”. Students will remain on the same

team as they were last year. New students will go through the draft in August

and be chosen for a team. Please encourage your students to support their team

by earning tickets!

We are thrilled about the opportunities for growth that Ladonia will be

providing to our students, parents, and community this year! There are lots of

ways that you can be involved, such as joining our parent-teacher association

known as Tigers, Parents & Community (TPC), participating in our new Family

Outreach classes, or simply visiting your students’ classes and joining us for our

fun activities like the Fall Festival throughout the year. We also have lots of ways

for you to stay informed, with web addresses listed below.

We encourage each of you to read through this Handbook with your

child. When you have finished, please sign the designated pages along with your

student and return to their homeroom teacher. I hope each of you can say that

you are PROUD to be a Ladonia Tiger!

“HEAR ME Roarrrrrrrrr!”

Message from the TPC President

Welcome back to school. I would like to say hello to our new families and

welcome to our wonderful school. Our students are so fortunate to be enrolled

in a school with outstanding administration and exceptional teachers who

strive to fulfill the school’s mission of promoting health, well-being and

educational success. It is through your support of the Tigers, Parents,

Community (TPC) that we join in that mission. Please consider joining the TPC.

Every year, I hear parents say they don’t feel connected to the school and know

what’s going on. With busy schedules all around, I understand it’s not easy to

keep on top of all the activities. The TPC board will be doing our best to

communicate school activities more regularly and concisely. The monthly

newsletter will have a calendar of events for easy reference. Still the best way to

know is to come in to the school and see for yourself. I enjoy being involved in

the TPC more each year.

How do I become a member?

Pay a $5.00 membership fee. The membership fee collected will help support

various activities during the school year.

So I challenge you to volunteer and do something good for yourself, too. Take

the volunteer challenge to help your child’s school and yourself. Get involved.

Become a member. It can and does make a difference.

Sincerely,

Mina Heimbach

TPC President

Policies & Procedures PLEASE NOTE: All LES policies listed below are based on RCSD Policies. Please take

time to read the “RUSSELL COUNTY SCHOOLS STUDENT ACADEMIC PLAN &

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES: a HANDBOOK FOR PARENTS 2018-2019”. Each

student will receive a copy of this handbook at the beginning of the school year

DRESS CODE

(A copy of this Dress Code Acknowledgement Page is found on page 56, and MUST be

signed and returned to Teacher.)

School is a learning environment and we ask that parents and students use

reason, good judgement, and common decency in the choice of dress in the school setting.

All students should dress in good taste and in a non-offensive manner. We require the following along with additional code in the RCSD Handbook:

1. No hats, caps, bandanas, or visors in the school building. 2. No football, baseball, or soccer shoes with rubber or metal cleats. 3. Shorts, skirts, and dresses must be no more than two inches above the

knee. (We ask that if skirts or dresses are worn, to please encourage your child to wear shorts, tights, or leggings underneath)

4. No tights/leggings unless worn under shorts, skirts, or dresses that are

at or below fingertips. 5. No spaghetti straps. Tank tops must be at least three fingertips wide at

shoulders. Appropriate undergarments should be worn and not visible. 6. No offensive/suggestive material on clothing (ex: alcohol, drugs, racial). 7. Pajamas must not be worn as outer clothing (except for Pajama Days)

8. Shoes must be worn at ALL time. As a safety precaution, high heels are discouraged.

9. Pants/shorts must be worn at waist level. We do ask that you dress your child according to the weather. Many times

a class will go outside when it is chilly.

Violations of Dress Code: If the above conditions are not followed, administration will give the student a WARNING. If the student commits subsequent violations, Discipline Referrals will be given. The school will contact a parent/ guardian regarding the dress. If warranted, a change of clothes will be requested.

*See the RCSD Student Handbook for a more detailed Dress Code Policy.

ATTENDANCE It is critical that your child is in school every day and that they arrive on time each day. If your child does need to be absent or tardy, we ask that you follow the policies in this Attendance section.

School Hours

1. The school hours are from 8:30am-3:15pm EST. (PreK will be 8:30 –

3:00). The 1st bell rings at 8:00 and students can enter the school and

either go to breakfast in the cafeteria or report to their classroom. A bell

will ring at 8:25am to signify that students need to in class. ALL

STUDENTS are to be at school and in their classrooms prior to 8:30 A.M,

when the tardy bell rings.

2. The Tardy Bell rings at 8:30am. After this time, a student will need to be

accompanied by a parent or guardian into the front office to be checked

in. These students will be counted TARDY. Tardiness is harmful to the

student’s educational progress and disruptive to the class.

Tardiness

1. It is the responsibility of the student and parent/guardian to assure that

the student arrives to school on time each day.

2. If a student arrives at school after 8:30am EST, he/she must enter the

school through the office and be signed in by a parent/guardian.

3. Students will not be admitted to class without a signed Tardy Slip signed

by personnel in the Front Office.

4. Students who are tardy three or more times without proper excuses will

not be considered for perfect attendance.

Check Ins/Check Outs

1. If a student is arriving at school after 8:30, a parent/guardian will need

to bring them in to the office to check-in. Please do not drop your

child/children off in the front of school – They are tardy and need to be

checked in!

2. We request that appointments for the doctor, dentist, etc. be made after

school hours if possible. Appointments that must be made during school

hours must be accompanied by a doctor/dentist excuse.

3. If a student needs to be checked-out, a parent/guardian or someone

designated by them (these need to be listed on the student information

sheet completed at the beginning of the year) will need to report to the

office, show proof of identification and sign the student out. They will

need to list a reason for the absence.

Page 15: Welcome to Ladonia Elementary - Schoolwires · 2019-02-14 · Welcome to Ladonia Elementary “Home of the Tigers” Mission Statement Our mission at Ladonia Elementary is to provide

pg. 15

4. Students CANNOT be checked out after 2:30pm. After 2:30 students

are gathering their belongings, receiving homework instructions and

lining up for bus routes, car riders, etc.

5. Your child will be called from the classroom to meet you in the office after

you have checked them out. Please do not call the school and request

your child to be called to the office prior to your arrival. Students spend

too much down time waiting in the office. Students will only be called

upon your arrival.

Arriving at School 1. Students being transported by BUS will be dropped off in the Bus

Loading Area on the north side of the school (Highway 80). If they arrive before 8:00am, they will be led to the Cafeteria where they will stay until the first bell @ 8:00am. At this time they can continue to eat breakfast or

report to their classrooms. 2. Students being transported to school as a CAR RIDER, need to be

dropped off on the south side of the school (Woodland Drive). The earliest

that students can be dropped off is 7:45am – at this time they will go to the Gym and wait until 8:00am. From 8:00-8:30am, students will enter

the school on the hallway across from the gym and report to breakfast or their classrooms. All car riders will be dropped off in the rear of the school until 8:30am. REMEMBER that after 8:30 they must be brought

in to the office be checked-in! 3. Parents that choose to park and walk their children to the door of the

school will need to park in the front parking lot. Parents should not park in the bus loading area to walk students up, nor should they put students in the bus lines that are unloading. These students will be

allowed to enter the school after 8:00. After the first day of school, parents will not be allowed to walk their students to class. The students will either go to the cafeteria for breakfast or go to their classroom.

School Dismissal 1. Bus Riders will be lined up in bus order and load number. Two of our

buses run a second route (or second load) after they finish their first afternoon route. Students waiting on 2nd load will wait in the classroom/hallway until they line up. Students will be escorted to the

Bus Loading Area on the north end of the school to load and buses will begin to depart at 3:15.

2. Car Riders will be lined up by grade and escorted to the Car Rider Lines

on the South end of the school. Students will begin to load at 3:15. Parents will need to line up in four lines parallel to Woodland Drive. They

will be directed by School Staff to pick up students beginning at 3:15pm.

**NOTE: Students MUST be picked up no later than 30 minutes (3:45pm) after scheduled time of dismissal. Failure to comply may result in the RCSD or Russell County Sheriff’s Office being notified. A student may be sent to EXTENDED DAY until a parent or guardian can pick them up (at a possible cost to the parent).

Absences

1. If your child is to be absent from school for more than two (2)

consecutive days, we ask that you notify the school office. 2. Upon returning to school from any absence, an excuse stating the

reason for the absence, the date of the absence and an official/parent

signature must be sent to the homeroom teacher within three (3) days of the absence. Alabama State law regulations require us to

have this verification. 3. Attendance data is kept on each child. You can access this

information through the Parent Portal (See District website and/or

school office for access!). 4. Parent(s)/legal guardian(s) may submit up to three (3) parent

written excuses per semester, and may be required to submit an excuse for late check-ins and early check-outs.

5. Upon the third unexcused absence, the parent/guardian will be

notified that the student is TRUANT by the school principal or his/her designee.

6. Upon the fifth unexcused absence, the parent/guardian will be

notified by letter from the school principal or his/her designee that the student is TRUANT.

7. After the Fifth unexcused absence, the parent/guardian are subject to the filing of a complaint to and participation in the Early Warning Program provided by the Russell County Family Court system.

8. Subsequent absences will result in the filing of a petition with the

Court under the Code of Alabama. 9. The truancy process can result in a student being placed in the

CHINS program or additional supervision and services through East Alabama Mental Health, Department of Human Resources, or

alternate placement outside the home.

PLEASE NOTE! Act 93-672 states that parents who fail to require their children to attend school regularly, or fail to require that their children properly conduct themselves as students, shall be guilty of a misdemeanor. A parent may receive a fine of not more than $100.00 or 90 days in jail for such a misdemeanor. The act states that school officials who intentionally fail to report suspected violations to the district attorney shall be guilty of a Class C misdemeanor.

**Please refer to the RCSD Student Handbook for more detailed information on TRUANCY Policies

whose absence was due to illness or other reasons coded as “Excused” in InformationNow.

2. The student should be prepared to take missed tests and turn in

assignments within three days after returning to school unless otherwise approved by the principal.

3. It is the student’s responsibility to turn in all assignments and take any missed tests within the designated length of time.

4. Students who have been suspended are allowed to make up missed

assignments or tests for the period of suspension; however students will be responsible for their missed assignments during their suspension.

AWARDS We believe that one of the most important things that we do at LES is promoting our students and their achievements. We give awards to students

Citizen of the Month Once each month all classroom teachers nominate a Citizen of the Month for their classroom. This student exhibits behaviors/achievement that make him/her stand out above the rest. They are a leader in their class and one that

goes above and beyond what is expected. These students are recognized during the “Citizen of the Month Lunch” that is held the first of each month. Citizens

of the Month receive Ten (10) tiger tickets and a certificate along with having their picture displayed in the school and on the website.

All A’s A student will receive an “All A’s” award when he/she receives ALL A’s (90-100) for all subjects during a grading period.

All A-B’s A student will receive an “All A-B’s” award when he/she receives all A’s and B’s for all subjects during a grading period.

Perfect Attendance A student will receive a “Perfect Attendance” award if they have been present every day during a grading period. Checkouts after 12:00 will not count against

perfect attendance. Tardies will count against perfect attendance only after the third unexcused tardy.

COUNSELING PROGRAM Guidance services are available to every student in the school. The students

attend classes every two weeks to discuss various topics with the counselor in

a whole group setting. The counselor is also available to meet with individuals

or small groups to discuss in confidence any problem or feelings that are

personally important to a student(s). During counseling, these concerns may

be talked through and examined, alternatives explored, and decisions made

about future courses of action. If a student needs special attention and/or

Page 20: Welcome to Ladonia Elementary - Schoolwires · 2019-02-14 · Welcome to Ladonia Elementary “Home of the Tigers” Mission Statement Our mission at Ladonia Elementary is to provide

additional assistance, the counselor will assist in finding such help.

• Parents are encouraged to talk to a counselor about any area of concern

(i.e. separation or divorce, students who are grieving, students with a

deployed parent, individual counseling, parent/teacher consultation, and

coordination of services for students) related to their children and the

school.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES In the office, we must have a record of current parent telephone numbers and the telephone numbers of at least two local relatives, friends, or neighbors who can be contacted in case of an emergency. Please write a note or contact the

school as soon as possible to report any changes of information on the Authorization of Release Form.

Tornado and fire drills are conducted periodically in the school. If a student pulls the fire alarm falsely, he/she will be suspended. Parents are requested

not to check out students when the school is under an emergency warning. Standard emergency procedures will be followed. Parents should seek safe shelter themselves. Please do not call the school during emergency warnings--

the school telephone line must stay clear. The school follows a normal schedule under watch conditions during the day; however, after-school activities will be canceled when under a “watch” or as directed by the

Superintendent. During emergencies, buses may be delayed. Students will be released only to persons on their Authorization of Release Form.

EXTENDED DAY SERVICES We realize that many parents work or have other pressing obligations in the afternoon which could interfere with the ability to pick up children from school or to be home when they arrive. Keeping the needs and best interest of our

students in mind, Ladonia Elementary offers an Extended Day Program.

• Description of the Program – The Extended Day Program is a program that allows students to stay in a safe environment rather than going home to an empty house. The program will offer snack time, homework time, tutoring,

and entertaining activities to occupy the students while they wait to be picked up by parents. The program will run from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00p.m.

each school day.

• Costs to Parents – o There will be a $20.00 non-refundable registration fee per child that is

due upon enrollment. o The cost will be $25.00 per week for each child. Payment will be

required the first day services are provided; thereafter, payment will be Due Thursday or Friday BEFORE the first day of each week the child

will be attending. o Drop-in services are provided for $8.00 per day.

FIELD TRIPS A signed permission slip will be required prior to each field trip. Telephone calls will not be allowed in lieu of permission slips. The permission slip must be returned to school no later than the day PRIOR to the field trip. Misbehavior

on a field trip may result in denial of future participation in such activities or an office referral.

GRADING and PROGRESS REPORTS/

REPORT CARDS Grades will be recorded and kept using InformationNow, a state-based student database. Parents can have online access at all times to their student’s grades, etc. To gain this access, please contact the school for login information.

The dates for Progress Reports and Report Cards to be issued are set by the

School District. Please refer to the District Calendar for these dates. You can also see these dates on the Calendar in this handbook or the Tiger News that is sent home monthly.

Progress Reports will be issued midway through each 9 weeks. The student is responsible for delivering these to the parent/guardian. It is required that a

parent/guardian sign the progress report and return it to the child’s teacher. If you have questions about the progress report, please contact the school to set

up a conference. Report cards are issued every nine weeks. See school calendar in this

handbook for dates. Students will be responsible for delivering these documents to their parents/guardians. All report cards must be signed by a

parent/guardian and returned promptly to the child’s teacher and will be kept on file.

HOMEWORK Homework is an integral part of the instructional program. It may consist of such activities as make-up work, meaningful projects, collecting materials for classroom projects, listening to or viewing suggested radio and television

programs or completing work begun in the classroom. Homework serves to stimulate independent study habits, develop responsibility and self-direction,

and reinforce school learning. It is the student’s responsibility to see that homework assignments are handed in or are ready to be checked at the time requested by the teacher. It is not the responsibility of an individual teacher to

provide parents and students with a list of missing assignments during or at the end of a grading period. Homework is most often an immediate need that reinforces a skill learned that day or prepares students for the next day’s

lesson. All students will abide by this policy unless it is otherwise specified.

LOST AND FOUND A student’s personal possessions should be labeled very plainly with his/her name. This is especially important for items of clothing such as coats and jackets. The custodian maintains a lost and found area in the school. It is

important that students assume responsibility for personal belongings, textbooks, and other school property. At the end of every nine (9) weeks, all unclaimed items will be dispersed to charitable organizations.

MEDIA CENTER The mission of the Ladonia Elementary Library Media Center is to ensure that

students are effective users of ideas and information and to promote a love of reading in a warm, welcoming environment. Our library media program utilizes

a combination fixed and flexible scheduling. All students visit the library with their class for 45 minutes every two weeks. All students are encouraged to visit the library as needed to check out books for pleasure and to utilize print

and online resources. We are happy to assist individuals or small groups of students with their work throughout the school day.

EXPECTATIONS - It is important for all students to remember proper behavior in the library. It is a quiet place for all students and staff to use. Our library

behavior expectations have been discussed with all of our students. They are:

• Be respectful

• Be responsible

• Follow directions

• Take care of our materials • Take a bathroom break before coming to the library.

There are lots of little things that we do in the library to make it run smoother. All procedures are discussed and practiced with the students.

Check-in Procedures

• As you enter the library, place books that you wish to check-in on the circulation desk.

• If with your class, sit in your assigned seat and stay quiet so that we may begin our lesson quickly.

Check-out Procedures • Kindergarten & 1st grade students may check out one book. These books

will be placed in a zip lock bag with the student’s name on it.

Kindergarten will not check out books until after Christmas.

• 2nd-5th grade students may check out up to two books.

Page 23: Welcome to Ladonia Elementary - Schoolwires · 2019-02-14 · Welcome to Ladonia Elementary “Home of the Tigers” Mission Statement Our mission at Ladonia Elementary is to provide

• All books are checked out for 2 weeks. Students may recheck a book if the book has not been reserved for another student or teacher.

• Reference materials and magazines are not available for check-out and must be used within the confines of the media center unless special permission is given.

• Use shelf markers when pulling books.

• Use a whispering voice when checking out books.

Overdue Materials – Students who have overdue materials may not check

out materials until the overdue materials are returned. There are no exceptions to this policy.

Lost/Damaged Books – All lost or damaged books must be paid for in full.

The cost for each book varies. A copy of the information for the book can be obtained in the library. Fees are to be paid in the office before the student is allowed to check out another book.

Book Care – Book care is also an important part of our library procedures.

We have talked about proper book care together and we remind our students about these important rules. We would be grateful if parents would emphasize our rules at home. They are:

• Make sure your hands are clean when you read a book.

• Do not eat or drink while reading a book.

• Turn the pages of the book from the top corner.

• Never write, scribble, glue, or cut the pages of a book.

• When reading, use a bookmark to keep your place.

• Keep your book in a safe place at home so you can find it easily on book return day.

Open Check-out/Unscheduled Visits – The library media center is open

for materials check-out during library hours. Students may also come into the

library to read quietly, take Accelerated Reader tests, or to do research. A hall pass from the classroom teacher is required in order to take advantage of these

privileges.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION (P.E.) We are very pleased to have your child participating in our Physical Education classes. P.E. is a vital part of the school’s curriculum. Our program presents a

variety of activities that teach fitness, basic skills, rhythms and dance, and sports that are appropriate for each grade level. We know that a well-balanced P.E. program will result not only in greater physical fitness, but also in a more

positive self-image, more appropriate social behavior, and the joy of feeling healthy. Your child will also realize the positive impact of a healthy life.

• ALL students must have a completed STUDENT IDENTIFICATION & MEDICAL EVALUATION on file in the P.E. department – Please sign this

form in the back of the handbook and return to the school. If your child has any condition that could interfere with regular activity participation such as asthma, allergies, diabetes, sickle cell, heart condition, seizures,

allergies, etc., please notify the P.E. department in writing.

• CLOTHING: Students should wear clothes and shoes appropriate for physical activity. Students must wear “SAFE SHOES” to PE every day! These “safe shoes” are closed-toe shoes – NO flip flops or sandals!

• WEATHER: Please make sure that your child dresses appropriately for the weather. P.E. classes could go outside any day that the weather

permits. Students will not go outside when the temperatures are unbearably hot or cold. You may send a water bottle with your child (with water only). The bottle must have water in it when he/she comes to

P.E. to save time.

• MEDICAL EXCUSES: If a child has been sick due to minor illness and does not need to participate, parents must write a note. The note will excuse the student for up to two days only. After two days the student must have a doctor’s excuse. The doctor’s excuse must state the physical

limitations and the number of days the student is to be excused. Please send this note to the PE teacher. He/she may be given alternative

assignments during the P.E. class. By following the safety standards, expectations, and class rules found below, your child will have an enjoyable P.E. experience.

Physical Education Rules:

Take care of all equipment. I will listen to the teacher. Good sportsmanship at all times.

Eyes and ears looking and listening. Respect others. Stop on the whistle.

Thank you for giving us the opportunity to teach your child the enjoyment of physical education. If you have any questions, please communicate with us. Sincerely,

Jennie Sanders ([email protected]) Jessica Dawson ([email protected])

TESTING In addition to tests given in individual classrooms, we have several grade- or school-wide tests that are given throughout the school year.

1. All students will be taking district-level PowerSchool assessments. These

assessments help to determine mastery of the state standards. The data from these assessments help teachers to adjust their instruction to better help the students succeed.

2. Students in grades Kindergarten through 2nd grade take the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) assessment three times

throughout the year. DIBELS are a set of procedures and measures for assessing the acquisition of early literacy skills.

3. Students in the state of Alabama will in grades 3-5 will take the Global

Scholar assessment. Dates will be announced prior to testing. Results of these tests will be sent home as soon as we receive them.

4. All K-5 students take STAR reading and math computer-based assessments throughout the year to determine grade level achievement and to help teachers determine individual needs in the classroom.

5. Please make effort to have your child present on testing dates. It is very important for them to take part in these assessments. They need to be on time those days, rested and ready to participate.

TEXTBOOKS Textbooks will be furnished for student use. They will be issued by your child’s

teacher. Students must take good care of these books. Lost or damaged textbooks are to be paid for by the parent/guardian. If a student loses a

textbook, he/she must pay the full replacement cost of the lost book. Another textbook cannot be issued to the student until he/she has paid for the lost book. Some classes offer students the chance to place book orders. Individual

student book orders are expected to be approved by parents prior to the order being placed. Orders must be paid for BEFORE orders will be placed. Student selected reading material should be monitored by parents/guardians before

being brought to school.

Ladonia Elementary School

A Schoolwide Title I Program

What is Title I?

It’s a federal program to help students in our nation’s schools. Title is about giving all children a chance. Some children may not have all the advantages

other students have. That’s where Title I comes in. Its goal is to help all children get a good education. Schools with 40% or more of children from low-income families qualify for schoolwide Title I programs. A good schoolwide

program can lead to a better school. The program is designed to help all students reach the standards, challenge students to be the best they can be, and prepare students for the complex world of today and tomorrow.

The benefits of a Title I Program include:

Improved Programs

Schoolwide Title I Programs allow schools to offer more:

• Services to help students in the classroom, such as counseling or tutors

• Teachers and other school staff

• Resources, such as computers and workbooks

• Variety in learning – problem solving, group activities, and skills workshops

Parent Involvement

Schoolwide programs count on parent support. All parents are invited to help plan and take part in their school’s program. Parents may also benefit from

some of the special services and programs the school may provide.

A Sense of Excitement

Improved school programs can boost school spirit. Students become more excited about learning and that helps teachers and other school staff with their

jobs.

Equal Treatment

It is not necessary to pull students from class to receive Title I services, although students may be pulled on an as needed basis. They are less likely to

feel singled out because the whole school is receiving the services.

More Ways to Use Resources

A schoolwide program has more freedom in how it can use resources. For

Page 36: Welcome to Ladonia Elementary - Schoolwires · 2019-02-14 · Welcome to Ladonia Elementary “Home of the Tigers” Mission Statement Our mission at Ladonia Elementary is to provide

pg. 36

example, Title I money may be combined with other sources of money to help pay for new programs.

Attention to Thinking Skills

In addition to working on basic skills, schoolwide programs help students:

• Find ways to use those skills in real-life situations

• Learn through hands-on projects and experiments

The Title I Program needs you to help:

• Determine program goals

• Plan and carry out programs

• Evaluate programs

• Work with your child at home and even in school, as a volunteer

The annual Title I meeting is the place to start and you’re invited! It’s the perfect time to:

• Learn more about Title I

• Learn more about your rights and responsibilities as a Title I parent

Parent and Family Engagement as required by the Every Student

Succeeds Act

Parental Involvement:

Describe how the school will convene an annual meeting to inform parents of the school’s

participation in Title I and explain Title I requirements, including the 1% set-aside, and the right of

parents to be involved. Annually, the school holds a Title I meeting that encourages parent

attendance, for the purpose of informing parents about the schoolwide program and the Title I

requirements and offerings. This meeting is held during the parent informational meetings on

August 9th for kindergarten and first grade, August 14th for 2nd and 3rd grade, and August 16th for

4th and 5th grade. At the meeting, the school wide plan, including the parenting policy and plans,

is made available to parents. These plans are also posted on the school website throughout the

year. At the meeting a discussion is held about the 1% set aside for parenting, the school’s

curriculum, student assessments, and student expectations for success. Notification will be

placed in the student handbook, school newsletter, and district website that this plan will be

available for review.

Describe: 1) How there will be a flexible number and format of parent meetings offered; 2) How

parents will be involved in the planning, review and improvement of the Title I Program (Note:

State the school’s process for how all Title I parents have the opportunity for involvement in

decision-making.); and 3) How funds allocated for parent involvement are being used in the

school.

1) Flexible scheduling for morning, evening, or during the day for parent conferences, and workshops will be made available to afford parents the opportunity to attend, according to their home and work schedules. Parents can meet with teachers before school starts, during their planning period or after school most any day of the week. Monthly workshops will be offered to parents at least three times during the year. These meetings are promoted through personal letters, telephone calls, news media, flyers, email, Remind messages, web page, School Cast, etc to reach the largest majority of family members. For the parent informational meetings held in August, childcare will be provided for students who attend Ladonia Elementary.

2) Ladonia Elementary has a Title I Advisory Committee. The committee meets annually to decide how to spend the parent portion of the Title I budget. Parents serve on the committee that makes decisions on the use of parent involvement funds. Input from all parents is sought during our parent/community meeting and during activities throughout the school year. (Our parent/community organization is named Tigers, Parents and Community (TPC))

3) Ladonia Elementary allocates funds for parent involvement in the following ways: generally this money is spent for parenting workshops, parenting newsletters, student/parent handbooks, events, and activities to support the parenting program. The school will use its portion of the LEA reservation funds to enhance parental support and training of parents. These funds will be used for guest speakers to address parents, workshops, and training as well as support materials for parents.

Describe how the school provides parents of participating children timely information in a uniform

format and, to the extent practicable in a language they can understand, about programs under

Title I, a description and explanation of the curriculum in use, forms of academic assessments,

and achievement expectations used, and, if requested by parents, opportunities for regular

meetings to formulate suggestions and participate as appropriate in decisions related to the

education of their children. Ladonia Elementary promotes and supports parental involvement.

Along with the annual Title I meeting, meet and greet night, parent informational meetings, and

other scheduled meetings, the school distributes a parent/student handbook to provide positive

practical information about school policies and procedures. During the parent informational

meetings, parents will visit their child’s classroom and receive more information from the teacher

concerning classroom assessments. The school distributes parenting skills information

brochures on a regular basis. The services of our parent specialist are enlisted to establish

workshops and programs that are helpful to parents. The district ELL Instructor makes

arrangements for non-English speaking parents, so they can communicate with their child’s

teacher. When feasible, written notification is made in the family’s native language. Ladonia

teachers and the EL instructor use Transact to communicate with parents.

Describe how parents, the school staff, and students share responsibility for improved student

academic achievement for participating students (How the School-Parent Compact is jointly

developed with Title I parents; how it is used, reviewed, and updated). Ladonia Elementary uses

the school/parent compact to foster shared responsibility for student learning. The compact is

used to build and foster the development of a school-parent partnership to help all children

achieve the state’s high standards. The compact is reviewed annually by the Advisory

Committee and revised as needed to meet grade level and school needs in sharing

responsibility for improved student academic achievement. The compact will remain in the

classroom to be used by the teacher in working with parents and students. It is the desire of our

school that all of these individuals will share the responsibility for improved student achievement

and the means by which the school and parents will build and develop a partnership to help all

students achieve or exceed proficiency on state academic content standards.

Describe procedures to allow parents to submit comments of dissatisfaction with the Continuous

Improvement Plan. If a parent disagrees with any aspect or component of the LEA Consolidated

Application for NCLB funds, the Parenting Policy, Parenting Plan, or the CIP they may schedule

an appointment with the principal to discuss their concerns. If they still have concerns after

meeting with the principal, they may submit their concerns in writing to the Federal Programs

Coordinator of the system. Their concerns will then be forwarded to the SDE Federal programs

Administrator.

Describe how the school will build capacity for parental involvement including how parents will be

encouraged to become equal partners in the education of their children. To ensure effective

involvement of parents and to support a partnership among the school, parents, and the

community to improve student academic achievement, our school:

Dress Code Acknowledgement (Parent & Student MUST sign and return to Teacher)

DRESS CODE

___________________________ ________________________ _________________ Parent Student Date
