Welcome to St Margaret’s Church IfieldSunday 3rd July 2016 Thomas the Apostle

All are welcome to St Margaret’s and we encourage all to take part fully in this service. If you have mobility issues that make it difficult for you to

come and receive communion or laying-on-of-hands for healing, should you want to, then do please notify our sides-people, and we will come to you.

Please do stay for coffee served at the back of church after the service. There is a toilet at the back of church should you need to use it during the

service.

THE GATHERINGWe stand at the entrance of the choir and clergy and sing:

Crown him with many crowns, the lamb upon his throne;hark! how the heavenly anthem drownsall music but its own:awake, my soul, and singof him who died for thee, and hail him as thy matchless Kingthrough all eternity.

Crown him the virgin’s Son,the God incarnate born, whose arm those crimson trophies wonwhich now his brow adorn:fruit of the mystic rose,as of that rose the stem;the root whence mercy ever flows, the babe of Bethlehem.

‘Accept one another for the glory of God, as Christ has accepted you.’ (Romans 15:7)

Crown him the Lord of love!Behold his hands and side, rich wounds yet visible abovein beauty glorified:no angel in the skycan fully bear that sight, but downward bends his burning eyeat mysteries so bright.

Crown him the Lord of peace, whose power a sceptre swaysfrom pole to pole, that wars may cease, absorbed in prayer and praise:his reign shall know no end,and round his pierced feetfair flowers of Paradise extendtheir fragrance ever sweet.

Crown him the Lord of years, the potentate of time, creator of the rolling spheres, ineffably sublime.Glassed in a sea of light, where everlasting wavesreflect his throne - the infinite!who lives - and loves - and saves.

THE GREETING

Celebrant The Lord be with youAll and also with you

‘Accept one another for the glory of God, as Christ has accepted you.’ (Romans 15:7)

THE PRAYER OF PREPARATION

All Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRAYERS OF PENITENCE Celebrant Our Lord Jesus Christ said: The first commandment is

this: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is the only Lord. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength’. The second is this: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself’. There is no other commandment greater than these. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

All Amen. Lord have mercy. Celebrant The saints were faithful unto death and now dwell in

the heavenly kingdom for ever.As we celebrate their joy, let us bring to the Lord our sins and weaknesses, and ask for his mercy.

All Lord God, we have sinned against you; we have done evil in your sight. We are sorry and repent. Have mercy on us according to your love. Wash away our wrongdoing and cleanse us from our sin. Renew a right spirit within us and restore to us the joy of your salvation; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

‘Accept one another for the glory of God, as Christ has accepted you.’ (Romans 15:7)

Celebrant Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Gloria in Excelsis is sungCopyright 2012 David Thorne Music.

Glory to God, glory to God, Glory to God in the highest.Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father,we worship you, we give you thanks,we praise you for your glory.Glory to God, glory to God, Glory to God in the highest.Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father,Lord God, Lamb of God,you take away the sin of the world:have mercy on us;you are seated at the right hand of the Father:receive our prayer.Glory to God, glory to God, Glory to God in the highestFor you alone are the Holy One,you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father.Glory to God, glory to God, Glory to God in the highest.

‘Accept one another for the glory of God, as Christ has accepted you.’ (Romans 15:7)

THE COLLECTCelebrant Almighty and eternal God, who, for the firmer

foundation of our faith, allowed your holy apostle Thomas to doubt the resurrection of your Sontill word and sight convinced him: grant to us, who have not seen, that we also may believe and so confess Christ as our Lord and our God; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen

COLOURS OF DAY dawn into the mind,The sun has come up, the night is behind.Go down in the city, into the street,And let's give the message to the people we meet.

‘Accept one another for the glory of God, as Christ has accepted you.’ (Romans 15:7)

So light up the fire and let the flame burn,Open the door, let Jesus return.Take seeds of His Spirit, let the fruit grow,Tell the people of Jesus, let His love show.

Go through the park, on into the town; The sun still shines on, it never goes down. The light of the world is risen again; The people of darkness are needing a friend.

Open your eyes, look into the sky,The darkness has come, the sun came todie. The evening draws on, the sun disappears,But Jesus is living, His Spirit is near.

Remain standing and turn to face the Gospel:

The Gospel ReadingJohn 20:24-29

The Lord be with you.All And also with you.

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.

All Glory to you, O Lord.At the end:

This is the Gospel of the Lord. All Praise to you, O Christ.

Remain standing until the Priest has introduced the Sermon:

THE SERMON

‘Accept one another for the glory of God, as Christ has accepted you.’ (Romans 15:7)

COMMISSIONING OF PARISH WARDENSThe Parish Wardens are called to stand before the people. Team Rector: Dear friends in Christ, Rob and Mark have been

chosen and called to assist in serving this parish through the office of Parish Warden. They come now formally to commit themselves to this service and to be affirmed in that commitment by you, among whom they will serve.Rob and Mark you are privileged to have been called to this office. In what spirit do you accept this call?

Parish Wardens In undertaking this service, I will strive by God’s grace to set an example of Christian faith and life, and to grow in holiness.

Team Rector: And how will you regard the community among

whom you are called to serve?Parish Wardens By God’s grace, I will be obedient to the Lord’s

new commandment given to his disciples at the Last Supper, when he said, ‘Love one another as I have loved you.’ Therefore, I will seek always to show a sincere love for God’s holy people.

Team Rector: How will you regard the office to which you have been called and your performance of it?

Parish Wardens By God’s grace, I will exercise this office in all humility, as a follower of our Lord Jesus Christ who came not to be served but to serve, and with a firm desire to build up the common life of the people of God.

‘Accept one another for the glory of God, as Christ has accepted you.’ (Romans 15:7)

Celebrant Do you now before God and this congregation commit yourself to the office of Parish Warden?

Parish Wardens Yes, I do. The celebrant addresses the people:

And you, dear friends, how do you respond to these undertakings given by Mark and Rob?

People By God’s grace we affirm them in their commitment, we will accept this service of love, and we will support them in the office of Parish Warden by our prayers and good will.

Celebrant Then let us pray:

Eternal God, when you call your servants to task, you promise to give them grace and strength to accomplish it. Mercifully look upon those who have special responsibilities in your Church as parish wardens, that beginning their work in reverence, following it through with obedience and completing it in faithful devotion, they may be renewed by your Holy Spirit to live in constant thankfulness to you; through Jesus Christ our Redeemer. Amen.

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSIONPrayers for the Church, the world, and for all human need. After each petition the following responses may be used:

Lord in your mercyAll Hear our prayer

‘Accept one another for the glory of God, as Christ has accepted you.’ (Romans 15:7)

and at the end of the prayers: Merciful father,All accept these prayers for the sake of your Son,

our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

THE LITURGY OF THE SACRAMENTWe stand to share the peace:The PeaceCelebrant May the God of peace sanctify you: may he so

strengthen your hearts in holiness that you may be blameless before him at the coming of our Lord Jesus with his saints. The peace of the Lord be always with you

All And also with you.

Let us offer one another a sign of peace.

As the Body of Christ receives its life from God, and offers its life to God, so we, as members of that Body, greet each other in love.

The Preparation of the TableThe Taking of the Bread and Wine

Glorious things of thee are spoken,Zion, city of our God;he whose word cannot be brokenformed thee for his own abode. On the rock of ages founded, what can shake thy sure repose? With salvation’s walls surrounded,

‘Accept one another for the glory of God, as Christ has accepted you.’ (Romans 15:7)

thou mayest smile at all thy foes.

See, the streams of living waters, springing from eternal love, well supply thy sons and daughters, and all fear of want remove.Who can faint while such a riverever flows their thirst to assuage:grace which, like the Lord the giver, never fails from age to age?

Round each habitation hovering, see the cloud and fire appearfor a glory and a covering, showing that the Lord is near. Thus they march, the pillar leading, light by night and shade by day;daily on the manna feedingwhich he gives them when they pray.

Saviour, since of Zion’s cityI through grace a member am,let the world deride or pity,I will glory in thy name.Fading is the worldling’s pleasure, all his boasted pomp and show;solid joys and lasting treasurenone but Zion’s children know.

Should you wish to make a donation to the work of St Margaret’s church a collection bowl is situated by the entrance/exit door – please

Celebrant Yours, Lord, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the splendour, and the majesty; for everything in heaven and on earth is yours.

All All things come from you, and of your own do we give you.

We sit or stand for:The Eucharistic Prayer

The Lord is hereAll His Spirit is with us.

Lift up your hearts. All We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.All It is right to give thanks and praise.

Celebrant It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give you thanks, holy Father, almighty and eternal God, through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord. We rejoice in the glorious splendour of your majesty for you have given us a share with Thomasin the inheritance of the saints in light. In the darkness of this passing age they proclaim the glory of your kingdom. Chosen as lights in the world, they surround our steps as we journey on towards the city of eternal light where they sing the everlasting song of triumph. In communion with angels and archangels and all who

‘Accept one another for the glory of God, as Christ has accepted you.’ (Romans 15:7)

have served you on earth and worship you now in heaven, we raise our voices to proclaim your glory, for ever praising you and singing:

All Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest.

How wonderful the work of your hands, O Lord. As a mother tenderly gathers her children, you embraced a people as your own. When they turned away and rebelled your love remained steadfast. From them you raised up Jesus our Saviour, born of Mary, to be the living bread, in whom all our hungers are satisfied. He offered his life for sinners, and with a love stronger than death he opened wide his arms on the cross. On the night before he died, he came to supper with his friends and, taking bread, he gave you thanks. He broke it and gave it to them, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me.

At the end of supper, taking the cup of wine, he gave you thanks, and said: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.

Great is the mystery of faith:

‘Accept one another for the glory of God, as Christ has accepted you.’ (Romans 15:7)

All Christ has died:Christ is risen:Christ will come again.

Father, we plead with confidence his sacrifice made once for all upon the cross; we remember his dying and rising in glory, and we rejoice that he intercedes for us at your right hand. Pour out your Holy Spirit as we bring before you these gifts of your creation; may they be for us the body and blood of your dear Son. As we eat and drink these holy things in your presence, form us in the likeness of Christ, and build us into a living temple to your glory. Remember, Lord, your Church in every land. Reveal her unity, guard her faith, and preserve her in peace.Bring us at the last with St Margaret and all the saintsto the vision of that eternal splendour for which you have created us; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, by whom, with whom, and in whom, with all who stand before you in earth and heaven, we worship you, Father almighty, in songs of everlasting praise:

All Blessing and honour and glory and powerbe yours for ever and ever. Amen.

The Lord’s PrayerAll Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come, your will be done,on earth as in heaven.Give us today our daily bread.Forgive us our sins,as we forgive those who sin against us.Lead us not into temptation,

‘Accept one another for the glory of God, as Christ has accepted you.’ (Romans 15:7)

but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

The Breaking of the BreadThe Priest breaks the consecrated bread

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. All Though we are many, we are one body,

because we all share in one bread.

The Giving of CommunionCelebrant Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord

Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving.

We sing the Agnus Dei. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: grant us peace.

All are welcome to either come and receive Communion or a blessing. If you would like a blessing rather than to receive Communion (the bread and

wine) then please keep hold of your service sheet as you approach the servers at front of the church.

Laying on of hands for healing is offered in the south aisle chapel during the distribution of communion. This ministry is offered for your own

needs or for someone who maybe on your heart and mind at this time.

‘Accept one another for the glory of God, as Christ has accepted you.’ (Romans 15:7)

Those who are going into hospital in the coming week, or for some other reason, and who would like to be anointed with oil of healing and prayed for by a priest please do have a word with a priest after the service – they

will gladly offer you this ministry.

Communion Hymns

Peace is flowing like a river,Flowing out through you and me,Spreading out into the desert,Setting all the captives free.

Love is flowing like a river....

Joy is flowing like a river....

Hope is flowing like a river....

God be in my head,and in my understanding;

God be in my eyes,and in my looking;

God be in my mouth,and in my speaking;

God be in my heart,and in my thinking;

God be at my end,and at my departing.

‘Accept one another for the glory of God, as Christ has accepted you.’ (Romans 15:7)

The Prayers after CommunionCelebrant Almighty God, who on the day of Pentecost sent your

Holy Spirit to the apostles with the wind from heaven and in tongues of flame, filling them with joy and boldness to preach the gospel: by the power of the same Spirit strengthen us to witness to your truth and to draw everyone to the fire of your love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

All Father of all, we give you thanks and praise, that when we were still far off you met us in your Son and brought us home. Dying and living, he declared your love, gave us grace, and opened the gate of glory. May we who share Christ’s body live his risen life; we who drink his cup bring life to others; we whom the Spirit lights give light to the world. Keep us firm in the hope you have set before us, so we and all your children shall be free, and the whole earth live to praise your name; through Christ our Lord. Amen

THE BLESSINGCelebrant God give you grace to follow his saints in faith and

hope and love; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen.

THE DISMISSAL‘Accept one another for the glory of God, as Christ has accepted you.’

(Romans 15:7)

We go into the world to walk in God’s light, to rejoice in God’s love, and to reflect God’s glory.

Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. All In the name of Christ.

O LORD MY GOD! when I in awesome wonder Consider all the works Thy hand hath made, I see the stars, I hear the mighty thunder, Thy power throughout the universe displayed:

Then sings my soul, my Saviour God to Thee,How great Thou art! How great Thou art! Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee,How great Thou art! How great Thou art!

When through the woods and forest glades I wanderAnd hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees;When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur,And hear the brook, and feel the gentle breeze;

And when I think that God His Son not sparing, Sent Him to die-I scarce can take it in. That on the cross my burden gladly bearing, He bled and died to take away my sin:

When Christ shall come with shout of acclamationAnd take me home-what joy shall fill my heart! Then shall I bow in humble adorationAnd there proclaim, my God, how great Thou art!
