Dear people of St. Anthony’s, Holy Family and St. Mary’s:

“Immediately he received his sight and followed him on the way.” (Mark 10:52)

It was long after Jesus had been raised and ascended into heaven that his followers became known as “Christians.” For most of the New Testament period, they were known as people “of the way.” There was no theology or doctrine yet to explain it. It was just a whole new way of life, this turning the other cheek, loving your enemy, and embracing the cross. So the final words of today’s Gospel are laden with meaning. Bartimaeus, in today’s Gospel, was healed when he got off the safe sidelines of life and joined Jesus on “the way.”

Today at the 4:00pm liturgy we will witness two people taking their first tentative steps out onto the way with Christ and two others starting up the journey again after having gotten off the trail for a long time. Sarah Settingsgaard and Corey Scheel will make public their desire to begin the path that will lead them to Baptism and entrance into full communion at the Easter Vigil this spring. Linda Troutt and Sadie Rutherford were baptized Catholic but lost touch with the Church for a number of years. They seek re-union with the Catholic family of faith. Their sponsors will testify that all four of them, “immediately” upon stepping out onto the way, have been receiving new sight. Please put flesh and blood on our words of welcome by personally inviting them into community.

On a very practical level we have some work to do to get our churches ready for newcomers. First of all I apologize for the frigid temperatures in St. Mary’s Church last weekend. As you might have guessed, the furnace had not been turned on prior to our gathering. We have been trying to hire a part time maintenance man for the last year. We have made offers to five people and still have not gotten a taker. We also were late in scheduling the House of Heating to come and check over the furnace before it was fired up. We’d hoped to have a maintenance person they could teach how to best operate the furnace. House of Heating was here this past week so we are up and running at the present. I understand at least one person had to leave in the middle of Mass and go to his car to warm up for a bit! The cold is enough to make a person step back into isolation like Bartimeaus and wrap himself in a cloak!

Holy Family is not sitting out the cold on the sidelines however. This Wednesday work on the Church entrances will begin. The entire front glass walls will be replaced with energy efficient panes and new glass doors will be installed. The Son’s light will now be able to pour into the church unimpeded. And all will be able to feel its warmth. As announced last weekend, donations to help cover the $11,000.00 cost are welcome! The contractors are aiming to have the work done by next weekend.

While House of Heating is working on the mechanical furnace, the St. Anne’s Society is working on the spir-itual furnace at St. Mary’s. Next weekend is their annual, amazing, Fall Harvest Sale. Honestly, I have not seen anything quite like it anywhere else. There’s good food, beautiful crafts, raffles, an auction, and Grandma’s Attic! Most of all there is a lot of fun and laughter. All of the activities really seem to be—in the end—an excuse to get good women to enjoy an afternoon together. If you haven’t been there yet, get up off the couch, throw your cloak of fear aside and step out into the action! It will be eye opening!!

Lastly I am getting really excited about our new pictorial directories. Two weeks ago we had in all three par-ishes a total of 85 households signed up to have their pictures taken. At the time this letter was written last Monday, we had a total of 256 appointments made. We are on the way, but have a long way yet to go. In our last pictorial directory five years ago, Holy Family had 86 family photos. St. Mary’s had 126. And St. Anthony’s had 317. You can still sign up to have your picture taken this weekend after Masses in the Church entrance or call the office during this coming week. And during the week you can also go to the parish website and make your own appointment.

Everyone will have the choice to share their contact information or not when they sign up for their picture. I would like to again plead my point of view though. It is very understandable that in this day and age some-one would want to stay unknown, wrapped in a cloak of invisibility. It feels safer. But it leaves you unable to see… unable to participate in the community of faith. Bartimaeus! God is calling you. Throw off your cloak and step out into the action. Let yourself be known. Let your picture be seen, your address, phone and e-mail be shared. Safety is found in community. Not in isolation. At least for Bartimaeus, his eyes were immediately opened when he stepped out onto the way. Fr. Steve

I know that some of you are thinking ahead to Christmas! The National Honor Society of Loyal High

School is too. On Saturday, December 5th, they will be hosting the ‘Tour of Homes’ in the Loyal area.

This year there are six homes and our own rectory will be part of that tour. One of the trees will be

decorated with ornaments from the students of St. Anthony School and our CCD students as well. I

know that this is a busy time for all, but hoping that there would be some of you that would be willing

to donate a few dollars towards some decorations and items for the home to make it ‘shine’ during the

holidays. Any questions, please contact Julie Loos at 715-255-8970. Donations may be placed in the collection

plate in a specially marked envelope or sent to Julie: W3134 Maple Center Rd. Loyal. The decorations will be

used for years to come. Thank you for your ‘giving spirit’. *Please have to me by November 13th. Julie Loos
