It has been a calm, reective start to the term as we supported each other with the sad news of the recent loss of our Year
7 student Jacqui Wilton. Jacqui joined us at West Lakes at the start of this year as a friendly and bubbly student. She
quickly connected with many sta and made some close friends who will miss her. At her funeral her family spoke of her as
a fun, condent and enthusiastic individual with a love of music, who touched the hearts of many with her smile. Her
school friend Lucy bravely stood and talked about the close moments they shared and what Jacqui had done for her as a
friend. Friendships and smiles are an important part of the care and kindness we need in our lives. As a community we will
seek ways to help us to continue to grieve and honour Jacqui’s memory. Our sympathy and thoughts continue to be with
Jacqui’s Dad Craig and her siblings Josh, Hannah, Danny and Christina. I share with you the photo of Jacqui to help us all
remember to smile and show kindness.
As a school we continue to support our students and sta as they deal with their grief and loss. For each child and adult,
grief can occur in dierent ways... sometimes it is instant or delayed, sometimes it is outward or held within. Over the
coming days and weeks please continue to talk with each other and support those around you. Look out for signs that your
child may be struggling and, if needed, call into our Wellbeing Hub to speak with Ms Rozika our Wellbeing Leader or Ms
Tracey our Pastoral Worker. School Counsellors return to site next Wednesday morning to follow up and continue their
support.

On Monday and Tuesday of week 2 we will undertake an External School Review. A panel of 3 will tour our school led by our
Senior Leaders; visit classrooms; talk to children, parents, sta and members of the Governing Council; and meet teams of
teachers and support sta. The purpose is to review progress against past directions, monitor processes used for the
creation of our School Improvement Plan and verify the challenges of practice and actions we have set. If you do not wish
your child to be included in any conversations with the panel then please put this request in writing to their class
teacher.
CONNECTED CURRICULUM - TERM 3 OVERVIEWCONNECTED CURRICULUM - TERM 3 OVERVIEWCONNECTED CURRICULUM - TERM 3 OVERVIEWCONNECTED CURRICULUM - TERM 3 OVERVIEW
OUT OF THIS WORLDOUT OF THIS WORLDThis term our Connected Curriculum was launched in a whole-school assembly with the help of two budding astronauts
(aka Mr Davidson and Mr T) Students watched as the rst people landed on the moon and got an insight into some of the
engaging and exciting learning they will be doing this term. As part of Science week we will be exploring 'Destination
Moon' and in Book Week unlocking your child’s secret power. Once again we will have our annual book parade and invite
our community to watch.
A copy of the specialist teachers term overview is available below. Class teachers will send copies of their overviews by
class communication apps.
BOOKMAKING AND SEVEN STEPS TO WRITING SUCCESS...BOOKMAKING AND SEVEN STEPS TO WRITING SUCCESS...BOOKMAKING AND SEVEN STEPS TO WRITING SUCCESS...BOOKMAKING AND SEVEN STEPS TO WRITING SUCCESS...
If you’ve heard your child talk about planning and creating their own books, planning for success, sizzling starts or
tightening tensions then this is all to do with our new evidence-based writing approach which we are beginning to use
across school: Bookmaking and the Seven Steps of writing success. All sta at site attended recent Pupil Free Day training
and are currently working to implement ideas into the student’s learning opportunities. Writing support teachers, Ms
Clancy, Ms Sheridan and Ms ! are busy helping sta to plan their text types and supporting sta to engage students in
establishing their new learning goals.
Early writers are ‘having a go’ at writing and our risk-taking approach focuses on early emergent writing and planning
writing for purpose within a classroom that promotes talk for writing. We want our students to be passionate little
writers. Early emergent writing involves encouraging children to have a go and writing ‘their way’. This includes allowing
them to explore writing simple marks, to beginning to form some letter shapes of sounds they can hear in words, to then
progressing to words and beginning to use punctuation. The focus is on strongly reinforcing the things children do well
and conferencing to nd out next steps that each child can plan to learn next. Enjoy some of Ms Pojer’s little children’s
Bookmaking below.

Students Leaving WLSS at the end of 2019Students Leaving WLSS at the end of 2019STUDENTS LEAVING END 2019 - We require families to inform us if their child will be leaving WLSS at the end of 2019 as
soon as possible. This then allows us to see where we have vacancies within the school for parents wishing to enrol at
WLSS for 2020 and also helps us plan our class structures. We understand that you might still be deciding or awaiting
acceptance into a private school for Year 7 especially for those Year 6 students. Please forward any information to Janet
Massey - [email protected]
GENERAL HOUSEKEEPINGGENERAL HOUSEKEEPINGFRONT OFFICE FRONT OFFICE - This is a very busy place rst thing in the morning and after school - please encourage your children to
walk around the admin building instead of cutting through the oce at these times, unless they need to talk to oce
sta or drop paperwork o. Please do not bring bikes or scooters through the front oce either.
GATES GATES - We endeavor to open the gates by 8:30am, but on the rare occasion we might be slightly late. The gates will be
closed every evening at 3:30pm - if you are still on the premises after this time the Main front gate will be open until
4pm - after this time you will have to exit via the Sta Car Park.
STAFF CAR PARK STAFF CAR PARK - Just a friendly reminder to all families that the Sta Car Park is not for your children to walk
through - either under your supervision or not. We want all of our children to be safe at WLSS. The only time parents
and children are able to exit via the Sta Car park is if they are on site for a parent teacher meeting and the other exit
gates have been locked.
