Curious about how brine pumpedfrom the ground is turned into an envi-ronmentally friendly flame retardantproduct, how office furniture is fabri-cated, how paper is made for corrugatedboxes, or how softener salt is produced?
Starting Monday, Sept. 27, the publicwill have the opportunity to tour four ofManistees major manufacturing facili-ties and see first-hand these processes atwork.
The Manistee Manufacturers Council(MMC) will host a community openhouse and plant tours from 10 a.m. to2 p.m. at a different facility each dayaccording to the following schedule: Monday September 27th at
Packaging Corporation of America, 2246Udell Street, Filer City Tuesday September 28th at Fab-
Lite Inc., 330 Washington St, Manistee Wednesday September 29th at
Morton Salt, 180 Sixth Street, Manistee Thursday September 30th at
Martin Marietta, 1800 East Lake Road,Stronach
Tours will last approximately 30minutes. For the safety of all guests theymust be at least 12 years old and shouldwear flat-sole, closed- toe shoes. Groupsof 10 persons or more who are inter-ested in touring together or persons withspecial needs are asked to contact theManistee Chamber of Commerce at (231)723-2575 or [email protected] to make appropriate arrangementsin advance of the event. Refreshments
will be served and the open houses andtours will be conducted rain or shine. We had very successful open houses
in 2005 and 2007, and we look forwardto welcoming the community againthis year. We want to give people theopportunity to get to know more aboutthe products we make here in Manisteeand manufacturings overall contribu-tion to our area, said Jim Reithel, MMCchairman and vice president of chemi-cal operations at Martin Marietta. Ourmembers are proud to show off their
facilities, and we believe this is one waywe can better connect with the commu-nity. We also hope people will enjoy thetours and learn something new.
Manistee is fortunate in that ourmanufacturing base has remained stable, providing quality jobs, generating taxrevenues, and supporting a wide varietyof community organizations, but we haveto work hard to keep this important eco-nomic sector viable for our community.
The MMC is working closely withour leaders to make sure we can con-tinue to be a strong part of the Manisteearea economy.
Founded in 2004, the ManisteeManufacturers Council provides a neces-sary link between community leaders, the public, and the manufacturing sec-tor.
MMC members include: Fab-Lite,Noron Industries, Martin MariettaMagnesia Specialties, Morton Salt,Packaging Corporation of America,TES Filer City Station, and NorthpointPrecision Industries.
