St. Clare Lenten Mission 2018
Lent A SEASON OF RENEWAL
Born and reared in Ireland, I was ordained in 1965 for the Diocese of Providence at All Hallows Seminary in Dublin. Upon arrival in the US, my assignments took the following order: Assistant at Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral, 1965 & 66; Assistant at St. Mary of the Bay, Warren, 1966 to 71; Chaplain and Director of Pastoral Care at St. Joseph’s and Fatima Hospitals, 1971 to 89; Pastor at
St. Francis De Sales, North Kingstown, 1989 to 97; and Pastor of St. Francis of Assisi, Wakefield from 1997 until retiring in 2011.For the past six years I’ve helped out at St. Patrick’s Church in
Providence, which has within its boundaries Hospice Care of Rhode Island. While treasuring the memories of all the wonderful people I have met along the way, I very much
look forward to our time together during the mission days, that it may enhance the ancient “Faith Of Our Fathers” in our hearts, and help us experience some personal dying/rising as Palm Sunday, Holy Week and Glorious Easter beckon the week following. Now to be honest, I’m not one for catchy titles
or themes, but would ask you to think of the mission under the heading “The Challenge To Be Catholic Today.” Why? Because it is a challenge! Anyway, my hope is that our three evenings
together will be a sort of Spiritual CPR, (Challenge, Penance, Resurrection). Please take these words as you personal invitation. If you know someone who hasn’t been active or has been alienated from the Church for one reason or another, invite them to come with you. Ask
them on my behalf just to be open to the possibility of “connection” again with God and/or Church. The past is gone. The future hasn’t yet come. The present is the only moment we own. Let’s give to
God together, knowing God is never outdone in generosity!
I was very delighted when Fr. Ken invited me to lead his 2018 Lenten Mission, I look forward to our time together. Lent is a time when God challenges us in a more intense way; the season when we’re invited to “turn away from sin, and be faithful to
the gospel.” It’s a chance to make this special time a genuine springtime of the soul! As a priest of 53 years I’ve always loved grace-filled Lent, with its emphasis on increased
opportunities to grow in the holiness and love to which we are each called.
St. Clare Bereavement Support Group
lead by Geri Wiitala will meet on March 15 at 11 AM.
This group will gather in the parish center, classroom #1, closest to the foyer.
Men and women of all ages who have lost their loved ones are welcome.
Mrs. Wiitala is a certified bereavement counselor and holds master’s degrees in
counseling and education.
St. Clare Stewardship Ministry Corner

• The Respect Life Ministry seeks to promote and protect the sanctity of all human life from conception to natural death. The ministry meets the Third Wednesday of every month at 8:30 AM from April through September, in the Parish Center. Rosary is said before the 8 AM Mass on the first Friday of every month year-round. All are welcome.
• The Hospitality Ministry provides a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere for members of the St. Clare community and visitors, as well as new parishioners, to meet and interact with one another in a positive way. This ministry provides opportunities to promote parish fellowship and, when necessary, to assist the Pastor with special events. Meetings take place the first Thursday of every month at 8:30 AM in the Parish Center. *The next meeting will be on April 5. All are welcome.
• The Helping Hands Ministry reaches out to those who are needy, elderly, sick or in need of bereavement consolation. This ministry meets on the first Tuesday of every month at 4 PM in the Parish Center. Enter through the door in the rear parking area. Please feel free to come to these meetings; new faces are always welcome. *The next meeting will be on April 3.
• The Men’s Prayer Group follows a process
that is prayerful and relaxing, but one that can lead to a deeper appreciation of the scripture. No special training or biblical knowledge is needed, only the openness to understand better what God is revealing through his scripture. The group meets on the first and third Tuesdays of the month in the classroom of the St. Clare Parish Center. The next session will be on Tuesday, March 20, from 7 PM to 8:30 PM.
