Beloved Patrons & UERMMMCI Family:

This is the time of the year when we look back and reflect on all the things we have achieved, and even for those we did not manage to address at the moment for some noble reasons.

Thank you for continuously subscribing to the quarterly issues of Medical Echoes, the Medical Center newsletter. You must have been regularly informed of the various projects, activities, and initiatives we have undertaken in the past months. We will never cease to carry out beneficial programs for the public.

Looking back at a momentous 2017, the UERMMMCI has set the mechanism in place which allowed us to become the gigantic force for “doing good in the environment” that it is today.

This year is even more momentous when we celebrated our Diamond Jubilee last June 15, 2017 in EDSA Shangri-La Hotel where over 200 members of the UERM family joined together to experience the six decades of triumphant milestones in UERMMMCI. Also, big thanks to all who supported and participated in our anniversary countdown of programs.

In countless ways, the UERMMMCI, as a Foundation, has created an instrument for cooperation and partnership among patients, doctors, parents, students, media, and other medical-related organizations. It has enabled us to be ever more ambitious in our work and to reach for goals of historic proportions, such as the treatment and prevention of diseases and upholding academic excellence at the core of our endeavors.

I believe our predecessors would be proud for all the good that has been done in UERMMMCI over the past decades as a result of our initiatives and advocacies.

I am looking forward to seeing all of you in our 58th Anniversary Celebration of the UERM Hospital on January 8-12, 2018. This is open to the public. We are shaping the way we reach out to the mass population in which most of our medical experts will be personally giving free consultations to the public.

As a community, we are brought together in numerous ways so that we can share our humanity and appreciate each other.

I wish you all a fabulous Christmas break. May the New Year 2018 bring bountiful blessings of peace, love and harmony to us all!

With warm wishes.

First known as then College of Physical Therapy, the College of Allied Rehabilitation Sciences (CAReS) first opened its doors in 1988. The mission-vision of its founders have always been and will always be its top priority – to form a bastion of quality education, service, and research, and to develop exceptional health professionals. Every school year brings a distinct chance for the College to prove its noteworthiness in providing equitable education for the majority – showcasing notable development in different aspects of its field – student life, faculty, education system, research, alumni, and health care services. This academic year 2017-2018, the College once again proved their significant flair to continue developing its capabilities and outshine the potentials of its learners.

The Opening Ceremonies and Recognition Day of the College was held last June 14, 2017. This event aimed to recognize the students and faculty members for their outstanding performance last academic year (2016-2017). The event was also an avenue to welcome the incoming and returning students and faculty members of the College.

From July 16-21, 2017, the College celebrated the 39th National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation (NDPR) Week. Dubbed with the theme “Karapatan at Pribilehiyo ng May Kapansanan: Isakatuparan at Ipaglaban”, the most anticipated week of the College was headed by Mr. Warrick T. Siy. Highlights of the week-long celebration included the following:

• Medical Mission 2017 in Brgy. Paradise Heights, Tondo, Manila coordinated by Dr. Dorothy O. Agsaoay and Prof. John Lemuel A. Balatucan• Lay Fora for Patients held at the Clinical Training Center, UERM Tan Yan Kee Building• Lay Fora for PhilHealth Benefits spearheaded by Mr. Nikolai R. Santos• Taebo prepared by Mr. Raymond Carlos and the UERM Knights• Zumba prepared by Crutches n’ Canes• Bingo Socials, a fundraising event organized by the CAReS Student Council• Lay Fora for Low Back Pain headed by Dr. Carmina Ann J. Cortez• Mind Wars organized by the Mentor’s Society• Lay Fora for PO Services prepared by the PO Post- Graduate Interns

The event was made possible through the collaboration of the UERM Hospital’s Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, PhilHealth, and with all active organizations within the College – CAReS Student Council, The Pensters Club, Mentors Society, Hymns and Symphony, Crutches and Canes, Campus Ministry, Knights Club, and UERMMMCI Red Cross Youth Council – PT Unit. These organizations were supervised by various BSPT and BSPO faculty members.

The College once again dominated the August 2017 PRC Physical Therapist Licensure Examination held last August 5 and 6, 2017, with its first-time examinees producing an impressive 82.61% passing rate. The Batch 2017 graduates of the UERM Philippine School of Prosthetics and Orthotics also successfully aced the two-weeklong 2017 certification examination given by the International Society of Prosthetics and Orthotics (ISPO). The success of all our examinees was celebrated through a Thanksgiving Mass and Testimonial Dinner held last September 15, 2017 at Gloria Maris Restaurant, Greenhills, San Juan City. The said event was attended by President Romeo A. Divinagracia, Vice President for Academic Affairs Gemiliano DL. Aligui, ISPO Chairman Reynaldo Rey-Matias, and other respected officials of the Medical Center. The Annual Acquaintance Party organized by the CAReS Student Council took place last August 12, 2017 at The View Lounge Princeton Residences in Quezon City. Dubbed with this year’s theme “Retropop: Muscle Hustle”, the said event was filled with a night of groove and pop as the whole CAReS community spun to the stunning and exciting era of the 80s to 90s.

In line with the Suicide Prevention Month, the College also attended the seminar entitled “Preserve Life, Prevent Suicide” facilitated by the Guidance and Counseling Office last September 26, 2017 at the Nursing Amphitheater A with guest speakers Dr. Shiela Marie Hocson, RGC (President, Philippine Guidance and Counseling Association) and Dr. Norieta Balderrama, FPPA (Chair, UERM Department of Psychiatry).

Last September 23, 2017, our very own CAReS Knights’ Volleyball Team was hailed as the Champion in the recently conclude d Mixed Volleyball Competition 2017 organized by the MU Lambda Fraternity and MU Lambda Sorority held at the University Gymnasium. Last September 29, 2017, our Hymns and Symphony also belted it out against Medicine

2020 during the Music Fest 2017, a friendly competition organized by the MU Lambda Fraternity and MU Lambda Sorority. Their pieces “Stand by Me” and “Part of Your World” as coached by Mr. Paul Dominique Galves continued their winning streak.

CAReS students also participated in the 12th General Assembly of the Association of Philippine Physical Therapy Students with the theme: “Action PTential: Unveiling Capabilities Through Movement” (APPTS) last November 5, 2017 at the Alfonso Hall of Far Eastern University. Ms. Archelle Jane C. Callejo, PTRP, MSPH, RPT and Mr. Michael Pereyra Gabilo, PTRP were the respective spokespersons during the event. It was a gathering of physical therapy students and professionals from various academic institutions who have one same purpose – to forge new bonds and become the nation’s bright and better physical therapists.

Last November 8, 2017, the UERM Philippine School of Prosthetics and Orthotics collaborated with Mahaveer Philippines Foundation, Inc., with Executive President Dr. VH Mehta and Mr. Tarun Kulshreshta, and the Philippine General Hospital’s RehabMed PO Staff in fabricating, for the first time in the country, endoskeletal Jaipur prosthesis for the embattled soldier amputees of the AFP Medical Center Department of Rehabilitation Medicine. Other recent activities of the College include the Red Cross Youth Council – PT Unit being part of the successful blood drive with the theme: “Help Save Lives” last October 13, 2017. Mentoring was also administered by the Mentors Society to students of different year levels in preparation for their various examinations. Knight’s Basketball Team is also battling it out against other schools and colleges for this year’s sports fest. The CAReS’ Pensters Club has also been active in the field of journalism, documenting every activity taking place in the College.

Without a doubt, it has been a very much fruitful and fulfilling 2017 for the College. We have spent the year in pursuit of serving others and becoming better professionals through the many activities and events that transpired. As the year comes to a bittersweet closing, it will be hard to bid goodbye to the year that has been and the memories that we have made. However, it is with our sincerest hope and belief that 2018 will be a lot better than the last. Here’s to wishing everyone a merry Christmas and a happy new year!

The most festive and, undoubtedly, the most awaited season is fast approaching. And surely, the whole world makes sure that everyone senses the vibe. Holiday sales, TV specials, Christmas decorations, and the color red plastered in every mall, are just a few indications before getting into the festive mood. Then suddenly, a few more weeks would pass by and distant relatives start coming home. Gift-giving ideas are being planned, family trips are being discussed, and it’s the last week of the school year; Christmas break begins. The holidays may be a highly anticipated season but it does not guarantee the full-pledged fun package that the holiday movie specials make it seem. A break from school, without a doubt, is a gift on its own and nothing beats the warmth of being able to share the holiday spirit with the family. But sometimes, there are moments when even the holidays could be stressful and at one point or another you may have wondered if things were a little different from time to time during such a festive season. Here are just a few tips that might give you ideas for a great holiday ahead:Plan. No surprise in this segment. As a student, we are constantly told that time management is key. You would be surprised as to how a scheduled day could make life seem more productive, more fulfilling, and well-balanced. Even though it’s the holidays, time is still ticking and dividing the time wisely by having a day for Christmas shopping, gift giving, going to church, out of town vacations, etc. will be a good start for your much-awaited vacation. Also, keep in mind to not get too caught up with the planning. The goal is to be more organized, not in full control.Save ahead. Money is not always essential. No matter how many you might think you have, there is no harm done in saving for a specific cause. Sales are prominent in this time of the year, but do not be fooled. Shopping for the holidays might be fun, but it should always come with self-control. Whether it is for a friend, a relative, a pet, or even yourself, make sure to think wisely before splurging. Keep in mind that the best gift should be the practical one. For students, receiving a high-end pen, a supply of bond papers or a bunch of highlighters could possibly be the best gift of the year. Nobody wants to start the New Year broke and with just decorative presents.Self-indulge. After a few glimpses of the semester, you are exhausted. Lucky for you, you now have enough time to add a day or two for yourself. The best way to have the most satisfying vacation would be to make a to-do list. It does not have to be concise or very much detailed; but being able to finally get and do the things you resisted is enough to satisfy the overstressed body. In a way, it makes the vacation worthwhile and will leave no regrets.Break tradition. Not entirely though. The point of having a holiday is to celebrate with spontaneous, loving, and happy moments. It could be overbearing if a yearly routine is made out of it. Trying out new holiday activities does not hurt anybody, or at least it should not. The point of the whole occasion is to experience less stress or no stress at all. Regarding money, there are plenty of things to do without the need of having an abundance of it. Instead of buying presents, why not donate to charity? After church, meet the whole family for a movie and cook BBQ at home. Whatever it is, the concept should be the same with just happiness and joyful moments worth remembering.Disconnect. As we further progress in the digital world, it is getting a lot more difficult to stay away from our smartphones or computers – which is not a good thing. Although Instagraming the decorations, tweeting the current activity, or posting the latest family reunion is harmless, there should be a limit to the amount of time we spend online. It is true that life will never be the same without the Internet especially if you are fond of it, but the rest of your holiday could certainly go on without it. It may be difficult and borderline impossible to not go online, especially during the beauty of the modern world

during its most celebrated season, but as emphasized before, self-control is important. Live in the moment. It may be certain that pictures capture moments and helps you remember it; but even the best lens of a great camera could not capture the authentic feeling of the memories in real life.Family should be the centerpiece. Family comes in all shapes and sizes. What better way to spend the holidays than to devote your time and efforts with them? Nowadays, trends and modernism come and go, but the warmth of having a family is timeless. A family reunion is considered the core of the holidays for most. Today is the moment of living and celebrating with the many lives that made your year worthwhile and worth living. Life is too short and, not to mention, the holidays could not seem to get shorter.Try something new. In school, it seems like every single thing you do is a routine. The holidays would be the perfect time to satisfy your creativity. “New” doesn’t necessarily mean it has to be extravagant and daring such as bungee jumping off a cliff or even go sky diving; though it would be an invigorating experience. Simple things such as photography or even drawing could also give you the same feeling of experience. These things might even become a skill or hobby you can do once in a while after the holidays.Catch up with old friends. Take the time to meet up with your friends. Make up for all the missed reunions and gatherings. The feeling of nostalgia reminds us of who we were and how much we have grown. The best moments we have spent with them would be reminisced; embarrassing times would be laughed at, and new experiences and stories shared – this is one of the best feelings in the world. Exercise. It has numerous benefits for our physical, emotional, and mental health, and yet, it is quite difficult for us to find time to prioritize exercising. With the holiday season, most people would not even think of it. To put it frankly, with all the food-oriented gatherings and the holiday atmosphere, no one could blame you for practically neglecting the intended nutritional diet. And so, these are a few things that might come in handy during the holidays:Make everything count. Use every opportunity to move your body and engage in physical activity. Walk as much as possible – climb up and down your stairs for a good cardio workout. In the mall, before actually going to your usual store or destination, walk around the entire length of the mall.Indoor workout. If you ever find yourself just lounging on your bed or couch, get yourself up and engage in a quick workout which you could do even in your bedroom or living room. The vast Internet can provide with countless workouts that could even be done in just five minutes. Invest in finding an easy yet efficient workout to begin with. Adjust routine. For those who usually work out regularly, it is inevitable to find yourself having a hard time to maintain your workout routine. The tip here is to break your workout into smaller sessions. It basically provides the same result with your two-hour workout. Now, exercising will not be time consuming. A friendly reminder: Find yourself discouraged and lethargic? Talk to a dependable friend about your plan and recruit them to encourage and remind you to stay on track.Clean and reorganize your room. “Tidy room; tidy mind.” No more excuses of being too busy to clean; it is time to declutter and clear your room. It is a fact that an unorganized room can actually make it more difficult to focus on a particular task. An organized room will give you a sense of relaxation and clear mind — less stress and distractions even. Mind you, cleaning is not an easy process. There will be a lot of work and commitment to finish, but the aftermath is definitely worthwhile. Your mind and body will thank you for it.

Not one but twoObero and his dance partner Rhea Marquez represented the Philippines in four dance categories, in which they won two first place finish for the main events and two fourth place finish for solo categories. The couple danced their way to championship against close contenders from Japan, Ukraine, Poland, Mexico, and Kazakhstan – bagging two gold medals for the Philippines. They defended their world championship title for Combi Latin Freestyle Class 2-5 Dance and successfully snatch the world championship for Combi Latin Class 2 Freestyle.

InspirationObero is a full-time Prosthetics and Orthotics Technician in the College of Allied Rehabilitation Sciences (CAReS). His passion for paradancing and his role as a technician was deeply rooted from his own experiences as a survivor of poliomyelitis. Polio affected his ability to fully utilize his legs in weight-bearing activities without the aid of a brace or a wheelchair. His work as a technician plays a primary role in helping students learn the art and science of fabricating artificial limbs and braces. Obero has expressed his hopes

Julius Jun M. Obero, popularly known in the Medical Center as “Kuya Julius”, has bagged two gold medals in the recently-concluded World Para Dance Sport Championship held in Malle, Belgium last October 21-22, 2017. The competition brought forth various para-dance enthusiasts from all around the world covering 22 countries and over 170 competitors per dance category.

CAReS’ Obero is World ParaDance Champion!By: Anna Margarita A. Lugue, PTRP, CPO

Not the firstThis is not the first time that Obero has brought pride to the institutions he represents. He has bagged several awards in the world of paradance, most of which were held within 2017 to 2018 including those held in Taiwan and Hongkong. Obero has also been a mass media favorite after winning first runner-up in TV5’s Talentadong Pinoy 2014. He was also invited as guest performer in various events since then. His recent television appearance was in I Can Do That, an ABS-CBN reality show, and his recent victory in Belgium has led to various interviews including a recent one from DZSRS Sports Radio.

Definitely not the lastWinning two gold medals in an international competition is definitely not the last act for both Obero and Marquez. The dance couple is gearing up to defend the title after two years. Right after flying back from Europe, Julius has started training for more gold medals from the upcoming World Cup in Netherlands and Asian ParaDance Championship both happening in 2018.

Julius Jun M. Obero in his full gear as Prosthetics and Orthotics technician in UERM-CAReS

that his efforts in empowering persons with disabilities (PWDs) can be extended to younger generations of Filipino paradance enthusiasts. He explained that very few paralympic athletes have answered to the challenge of paradancing and he is more than willing to share his expertise to those who share the same passion.

College of Allied Rehabilitation Sciences (CAReS) and Physicians for Peace-Philippines supports Appropriate, Accessible, and Affordable Rehabilitation for Filipino Persons with Disabilities (PWDs)

October 21, 2017 – UERM CAReS in collaboration with Physicians for Peace-Philippines held its first Access-Ability Seminar on Understanding the PhilHealth Benefit Packages for PWDs at the UERM Tan Yan Kee Building. The one-day event gathered representatives from institutions nationwide including delegates from Camarines Sur, Zamboanga, and Davao. The seminar aimed to provide health administrators, professionals, and policymakers, a venue to discuss means on how PhilHealth benefit packages can be fully utilized and how other assistive devices such as wheelchairs can be accessed by PWDs.

Champions of health service delivery lead small steps to Access-Ability

Access-Ability speakers had been well represented by health care leaders in the field of rehabilitation. Elder Dennis Smith of Latter Day Saints Charities (LDSC) led the discussions on wheelchair provision in the Philippines emphasizing that appropriate “provision” cannot go without assessment and accurate

measurements. This is to ensure that recipients are safe and functional in their wheeled devices.

LDSC has prepared wheelchairs of varying designs which were tried out by attendees at the exhibition area during breaks.

The LDSC presentation was followed by a session by representatives from the Benefits

Administration and Quality Assurance Sections of the PhilHealth Central Office: Dr. Imelda de Vera-Pe, Dr. Coracel Ontalan, and Umillene G. Felebrico. Dr. Pe’s team patiently discussed various processes

needed for successful PhilHealth claims down to the most specific item of the Z-MORPH checklist. Dr. Ontalan followed the discussions with an in-depth tally of the PhilHealth requirements for health institutions who wish to become accredited providers of the Z-MORPH and CWD packages for PWDs.

Top and bottom: UERM’s CPO; Frances Acorda sharing insights on UERM’S experiences as a PhilHealth pilot center

Questions in the morning open forums centered on building possibilities for free standing clinics to partner with tertiary hospitals to widen the accessibility of PhilHealth packages in the farthest Filipino communities.

The afternoon session was led by Dr. Josephine R. Bundoc, project lead of the Z-MORPH benefit package. Dr. Bundoc provided the audience with a concise background of the Z benefit packages. Detailed explanation and rationale for the package inclusion were also discussed. An overview of the upcoming Children with Disability (CWD) PhilHealth packages for Vision, Hearing, Mobility and Developmental challenges was provided by Dr. Paula Valera and Morick Mauricio, UNICEF-PFP CWD project leaders. Ms. Frances Acorda, a certified prosthetist and orthotist concretized the understanding of the audience on the current national landscape of health access for PWDs by sharing insights on the current offerings, processes, and challenges of the UERM Department of Rehabilitation Medicine as a pilot center for PhilHealth Z-MORPH. The session was closed by a tour at the Philippine School of Prosthetics and Orthotics, themed “Road to Recovery”, aimed at explaining the art and science of prostheses and orthoses delivery from clinical evaluation to physical therapy training.

Future directionsAccess-Ability has been conducted, guided by the drive of both the UERM and PFP-Philippines to serve well and to serve many. The seminar has not only gathered people who share the same passion for service but also built stronger alliances among different health care institutions of the archipelago. Enthusiastic delegates of Access-Ability have expressed requests for another Access-Ability seminar next year focused on more information about the CWD packages once further information has been published. Other attendees expressed their interest in attending future seminars on pediatric assistive technologies and diabetic foot management. Although no definite arrangements have been set about the requested seminars, UERM and PFP-Philippines are grateful for all the feedback and will continuously be firm supporters of appropriate, accessible and affordable rehabilitation for Filipino PWDs.

For the love of PWDs, cancelled clinics today just to spend the whole day learning more about the PhilHealth benefit packages for PWDs. Kudos to the organizer of the 1st Access-Ability Seminar! Great job! -Dr. June Anne Rosales De-Vera on Access-Ability

“Ethical and Servant Leadership”: The Dr. Ludivino De Guzman (LGG) Memorial Lecture

By: Dr. Beverly Anne P. Portugal

L E C T U R E S

The Universal Health Care (UHC) framework is the continuing care from primary to secondary to tertiary and vice versa or continuing care at the primary level. This is considered one of the most complex components.

This framework implies that Evidence-Based Management (EBM) must be applied and practiced based on data (Evidence-Based Medicine – also termed as EBM). In the real world, the challenge to determine the needs of the clients is dynamic. It varies with how clients access care which is multi-dimensional in terms of cultural access, economic, and even knowledge in health – the latter being health literacy. These can all be patient-centered factors.

Most of the elderly populations have more than one disease. In health care research, the concept of “unmet need” arose because of numerous gaps and outcomes resulting from “service” or health care gaps. What is needed is to determine how much each patient is seen and medically managed by a team of doctors within the point of care (POC).

This would also require that Out-Patient Care must be integrated for those who would need complex care at the POC; preventing each patient from entering tertiary care as much as possible. It is at this stage of awareness of administrative management must we put emphasis that the organization and processing of

patient are no longer just generalizable situations but must be tailored to suit each patient depending on need.

This scenario puts Managerial Epidemiology into the “nerve center” of both academic and hospital strategic crossroads. We must embed Evidence-Based

Medicine into Evidence-Based Hospital Operations Management. As an academic medical center, the continuity of concept/practice, defined by a clear curriculum, must be laid out from first year to junior and senior internship to residency. In the same disposition, the interface of allied health must be shown to exist within each node of progress into professional outcomes.

This write-up was inspired by the articles: Salisbury, C., Johnson, L., Purdy, S., Valderas, J. M., & Montgomery, A. A. (2011). Epidemiology and impact of multi-morbidity in primary care: a retrospective cohort study. British Journal of General Practice, 61(582), e12. https://doi.org/10.3399/bjgp11X548929.

The UERM Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine added another feather in its cap as it held the Dr. Ludivino Gocueco De Guzman Memorial Lecture last October 11, 2017. This was the third commemorative symposium organized by the Department in honor of its founding chair.

Dr. Norbert Lingling Uy, Dean of the UERM College of Medicine, formally opened the program. Past chairs of the Department then took turns in making introductions, with Dr. Eric Nagtalon giving the audience of an overview of the memorial lecture, and Dr. Fidel Payawal introducing the key presenter.

Indeed, the accomplishments of Dr. Ludy as head of his family and as a leader amongst colleagues not only perpetuate his good name but also inspire those who came after him to “work quietly, competently, shunning noise, pomp, and circumstance, believing that collaborative work is the way to success.”

“Thus, this memorial lecture in honor of Dr. LGG should not just be a panegyric to his historic accomplishments. It is, as it should be, a commitment to live and uphold his virtues and passion for an ethical and servant leadership beyond his lifetime, his longing and love to understand and undertake the Divine. Further yet, beyond his being a physician and anesthesiologist. Still further, even beyond anesthesia, ” Chief Justice Davide reiterated.

“The bedrock, the cornerstone, foundation of ethical and servant leadership is service – service not for oneself, but of others. Service that follows strictly the standards, norms, and demands of good conduct, behavior, motivation, and attitude, and more specifically of selflessness in light of the teachings and example of Jesus Christ and Biblical revelation.”

The above quotes, along with many other valuable insights from Chief Justice Davide were warmly received by those in attendance – administration officials, heads of departments, professors of the academe, and the younger generation of millennial clerks and interns.

The plaque was awarded by Dr. Romeo A. Divinagracia, President, assisted by College of Medicine Dean Norbert Lingling D. Uy, Dr. Joselyn A. Eusebio, Chairman on the Committee on Special Conferences, and Dr. Glenn D. Mariñas, Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine.

The family of Dr. De Guzman expressed their appreciation through a heartfelt response from his daughter Charisse who pondered on how dedicated he was to his family and to his profession, and on how the UERM Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine continues to honor Dr. LGG even after his passing.

The program drew to an end as President Romeo A. Divinagracia conveyed congratulatory and closing remarks, hoping that everyone in attendance would take to heart the inspiration and wisdom offered by the honorable guest.

The 3rd LGG Memorial Lecture was hosted by Dr. Allen John Dominic C. Babaran and musical numbers were rendered by Chorvs Medicvs.

As part of the advocacy of the UERM Department of Psychiatry in fostering mental health wellness, it has been a yearly tradition to commemorate the life and work of Dr. Jaime C. Zaguirre, the trailblazer and one of the pioneers in the field of psychiatry in the country. An annual lecture is conducted confronting timely and significant issues in mental health to continue Dr. Zaguirre’s advocacy in psycho-educating both health professionals and the general population.

This year’s esteemed speaker was Dr. Lourdes K. Ledesma, a renowned psychologist spearheading several researches commissioned by UNICEF Philippines to monitor the development of Filipino children. The lecture was held last February 22, 2017 in the University Auditorium. Entitled “The Filipino Child: How He Thinks, Feels, and Loves in a Neuropsychological Perspective”, the event was attended by a variety of enthusiastic listeners consisting of administrative and faculty staff, health practitioners, and students. The lecture discussed indicators providing meaningful and realistic markers for development in the cognitive, social, and emotional domains. Emphasis was placed on the capacity of the Filipino child to adjust to changes in situations, as well as thinking out of the box. Hence, the Filipino child should not be underestimated.

Furthermore, Dr. Ledesma introduced the concept of “super kids”, based on her nationwide study funded by UNICEF Philippines. Super kids are described as “intelligent, imaginative, playful, self-confident, and can regulate their emotions appropriately – loving, socially sensitive, and capable of forming strong attachments.” Dr. Ledesma closed her lecture with the important message that every Filipino family can raise a super kid, through the provision of unconditional love, nurturance, and opportunities to be the best that they can be. This message resonates with the aim of the UERM Department of Psychiatry and the entire psychiatric community to guide Filipino children into becoming resilient adults.

The event was made possible through the support of the College of Medicine and the generous financial endowment of the UERM Alumni Foundation USA, Inc., who has been continually enthusiastic in being involved in this annual activity.

The UERM Department of Psychiatry looks forward to future Zaguirre Memorial Lectures to provide platform for discussion of relevant mental health issues in the country.

Retired Chief Justice Hilario G. Davide, Jr. delivered the speech on Ethical and Servant Leadership: Beyond Dr Ludivino De Guzman, Beyond Anesthesia. The former magistrate did remarkably well in paying tribute to Dr. De Guzman’s legacy. According to him, “We know more of a person through the history of his life and achievements emblazoned in tablets and in frames of truth honored more after his death.”

CT- SCAN MACHINE, HITACHI SUPRIA MODEL (64 SLICE)

The UERM Department of Radiology is pleased to announce the installation of its new and improved CT scan machine, which was officially unveiled and operational last October 11, 2017.

The much-awaited Hitachi CT Scan Machine, specifically a SUPRIA model featuring 64 slices and 5.0 MHU capacity, was generously provided by the Himex Corporation in a joint venture with the Medical Center. This is in line with our mutual goal of providing high quality medical service using state-of-the-art equipment and top of the line analysis software. The inauguration and blessing of the machine was held in the UERM Memorial Hospital’s CT Scan Section. The event was attended by numerous hospital employees and staff members of various services/departments, including the Department of Radiology; representatives from Himex Corporation headed by Ms. Rema P. Ohno, President and CEO. Prominent figures of the Medical Center who were present in the said event included Mr. Wilson T. Young, Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees; Dr. Romeo A. Divinagracia, President; Dr. Maribeth T. De Los Santos, Vice President for Hospital Services; Dr. Napoleon B. Alcedo, Jr. Director for Medical Services; Dr. Maribel Emma Co-Hidalgo, Director for Ancillary and Support Services; and Dr. Mercedes C. Onagan, Head of the Radiology Department.

Since its installation, our new CT scan machine has reliably provided a wide range of radiologic studies, including plain and contrast-enhanced cranial, neck, chest, abdominal, and angiographic CT scans as well as CT scan-guided interventional procedures. Keeping in line with the prestigious history of the Medical Center being one of the pioneering hospitals in the Philippines to own and operate a CT scan machine in the early 1970’s, this invaluable addition to our Medical Center’s repertoire of diagnostic equipment will surely enable us to provide excellent and affordable radiographic services to our fellow Filipinos.

A nurse leader has the core responsibility of is setting directions to meet the expectations of an organization. He/She should have the ability to understand and react appropriately on the needs of a patient. Through this discipline, the nurse leader will make better decisions, influence more effectively, and create the right pace for the job to encourage staff engagement.

To achieve this, Nursing Service coordinates regularly with the UERM Nursing Alumni and the College of Nursing to cater to the continuing professional development of our nursing service staff. Last September 26, 2017, we invited Mr. Daniel G. Coronel, Director of Nursing in Brookdale Hospital Medical Center which is based in Brooklyn, New York. Mr. Coronel shared his expertise in our symposium entitled “Emotional Intelligence: The Key to Nurse Leader Success”.

The symposium was participated by the nursing service staff and faculty members. It was also extended to the nurses from the different hospitals in Metro Manila.

This congress was chaired by Dr. Norielee S. Magsingit, Chief Nurse, with the assistance of Mrs. Yolanda G. Zamora, Quality Assurance Nurse.

We have participated in various career orientations for the Grade 12 students who are hopeful for a brighter University life in 2018. The UERM expects to receive voluminous number of freshmen for our baccalaureate programs in the next school year 2018-2019 as majority of senior high school graduates will have its first batch

of K-12 graduates in 2018. Based on the student surveys we

conducted for every school roadshow, a number of students are keen on Health Sciences.

By joining the campus career orientations, we can actively manifest the presence of UERM in the National Capital Region. We are grateful for the continued invitations we receive from various schools as we have been undertaking this activity for the past two years.
