MESSAGE FOR MARCHWe are now exiting Winter and entering into Spring. Spring is oneof my favourite times of year as we see buds appearing on trees, crocus and daffodils are beginning to flower bringing wonderfulcolour to the landscape. It is important that we grasp the coloursand light of Spring as the darkness of Winter can have adetrimental effect upon our health and well being. As we enter this time of great uncertainty with Brexit, there issomething about the constant freshness and newness of Springthat can see us through the turbulent time ahead. Whatever wethink about Brexit or how we voted for it, it will mean that thingswill be different, things will change. Surely this is the same asany new day, there has never been a day like today ever beforein history. Each new day brings its challenges and rewards andbrings something new. The certainty is that the sun will rise andgive light and the moon will bring its light in the darkness witheach new day. Each day is a day of death and resurrection whereone day ends and a new day appears with the morning. The daybefore has gone, it is in the past and a new day and newopportunities arise. We are now entering the period of Lent as we look towards Easteragain a time of death and resurrection. Each day there areopportunities that are life giving to us and it is important that wegrasp these opportunities. Jesus once said, ‘I have come that youmay have life and have it in all it’s fullness’. As we enter Springwe see this displayed all around us in the wonder and beauty ofnature. To quote a line from a well known film, we need to ‘ChooseLife’. I often ask myself, ‘What is life giving to me?’ I make surethat I concentrate on those things and try to do those things whichnot only give life to me but also help my life to be kept in balance. As Spring breaks through giving life, we need to allow love forourselves and others to break through too which give us life in allof its fullness. As a Christian I know God loves me and I love Godand that it is God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit that gives me life inall of its fullness. Perhaps we need to see each new day as a newbeginning and to ask ourselves ‘What gives me life?’Every Blessing,

LOCAL HISTORYFrom local historian, David Craven

Taken from the Halifax Courier - January 1860

Saturday, 7th - llingworth Wesleyan School Tea Meeting:The Teachers of the Wesleyan Sabbeth School, Illingworth, had theirAnnual Tea meeting in the Schoolroom last Monday afternoon when244 persons sat down to an excellent tea. The speakers were Messrs.E. Farrar, H. Firth, J. Lund, H. Widdop, E. Ramsden and H. Charnock. The Choir was in attendance. Psalm tunes and several of Kent’sAnthems were sung. Mr. Samual Smith presided and conducted themeeting.

Saturday, 14th - A Boaster Humbled:This week a race has come off near Raggalds Inn between James Woodof the 17th Foot and Thomas Wood, known as “Tom O’Grondads”.James became a sort of “Cock of the Walk” among the rustics and wasboastful on his running powers. At length, “Tom O’Grondads” acceptedthe challenge, the length to be run was five hundred yards. A largecrowd assembled. In time the Boaster was nowhere, he ran only halfthe distance leaving Tom to carry off the honours. The soldierreturned to his regiment having learnt a lesson, that deeds are betterthan words.

Saturday, 21st - The Mixenden Postman:Mr Greenhalgh, Postman, has just been presented with a handsomesuit subscribed for by a number of persons resident on his round. THE MOTHER OF A CHOICE!Who will your Mothering Sunday card beaddressed to this year? If that sounds asilly question, consider this: last year, forthe first time in the UK, you could choosebetween cards that called your mother

Mother, Mum or – Mom.Paperchase was the company who brought in the American flavoured‘Mom’, and the reason may be linked to all the American cartoons Britishchildren enjoy. But it seems that ‘Mom’ is also used in the UK, at leastin the Midlands.Prof Carl Chinn, a Birmingham linguistics expert, says there is evidencethat ‘Mom’ was used prior to WW1. In Birmingham, “people have beenreplacing the ‘a’ with an ‘o’ in various words since the ancient medievaltimes.” The Birmingham Yardley MP, Jess Philips, uses the term ‘Mom’,and insists that Hansard record her saying ‘Mom’ and not ‘Mum’ in theHouse of Commons.

WHAT’S WRONG WITH HAVING TIME TO DO NOTHING?A popular way to ‘show off’ these days seems to be telling people onFacebook that you are too busy to accept their invitation to whatever. This lets everyone know that you are in more demand than they are,and that they would be lucky to get five minutes with you. You are abusy person! Busy, busy busy! Why do we feel under constant pressure to cram more and moreactivities into our lives, and then to keep everything going at a frenziedpace? Why do we have to live like hamsters on a wheel? If ever weslow down, or falter, there is always that little voice in our head whichaccuses us of being idle - or inadequate. We admire people who seem to endlessly juggle family, work, hobbies, sports and whatever else in their lives. But why? Why is it so good tonever have time to stop and think and just BE? Why is risking burn-outand complete exhaustion something to be admired? This Lent, why not prayerfully try and discern what is really worthwhilein your life? There is no need to charge from one thing to another, hoping to find some meaning in it all. Remember, at the end of the day,the hamster gets nowhere.

DO YOU PREFER YOUR PHONE TO YOUR CHILD?One of Britain’s best-loved authors, Julia Donaldson (The Gruffalo andRoom on the Broom) has said how much she detests seeing parentslooking at their phones and ignoring their children. “You often see aparent with the child trying to get the parent’s attention, with theparent scrolling down and looking at Facebook.”

Theyoungest was Karen MacKinnon, now spiritual care manager atSouthampton Hospital. Ten years later, one in five priests was awoman. WE ARE GETTING SMALLERWell, at least our families are!In 1961 there were 16.6 million households in the UK with anaverage of 3.0 persons. In 1981 there were 20.6 million families with 2.7 persons each.By 2001 we were 24.5 million households, with 2.4 people in each.By 2021 we’ll have 28.3 million households, though still with 2.4persons in each. The figures come from the Office for National Statistics, HouseholdProjections, Table 401.

The Rev Tony Horsfall finds that getting older makes him want touse his time more wisely. A good thing to think about in Lent!

GOD AND THE TESCO TOKENI was shopping recently with my wife at the local Tesco store.Having paid for our goods we were given a blue token, which my wifeexplained we could place in the donation box of a local good cause aswe left the shop.Sure enough, near the exit were three large plastic containers intowhich we could drop our token, each representing a different charityneeding support. The more tokens they receive, the bigger thedonation they will be given from the supermarket, so it was a weightychoice! I chose the local Youth Choir.I am in the habit, just before I sleep, of looking back over the day thatjust finished. That night as I went to sleep God reminded me aboutthe blue token and my concern to use it wisely. As I get older I amincreasingly aware of the importance of every day, that each new dayis a gift from God to be enjoyed and cherished. None of us know howmany days we have, but we do know they are running out. All themore reason, then, to use them wisely. As I thought about the token it seemed to me that with each new dayI have been given the gift of a token from God, and I should do mybest to use it for His glory. When we are young, with our livesstretching out ahead of us, it is as if we have thousands of tokens tospend (70 years, for example, would be 25,550 tokens), so to wastea few is not such a disaster. However, now that I am in my 69th year, there may not be so many tokens left! I need to spend each onewisely.Moses, who lived to the grand old age of 120, prayed to God like this:“Teach us to number our days aright that we may gain a heart ofwisdom (Psalm 90:12).”

Some of the most ‘hurt’ people are those who had an uneasyrelationship with their parents but the Rev Tony Horsfall findsreassurance in what the Bible says about our births.

YOU MAY HAVE SURPRISED YOUR PARENTS, BUTNEVER GODI’m a March baby, the youngest of five children born to my parents ina small Yorkshire pit village in 1950. I think I was something of anafterthought, a surprise even, and the story of my entry into the worldis quite amusing.

In those days my mother, a stout lady, wore an apron (or pinnie)almost all the time, and my siblings had no idea that she waspregnant. One day my two older brothers (Dave 14 and Sam 12) wereoutside playing when someone told them, “Hey, your mother has hada baby!” They were shocked to the core.

“She hasn’t,” replied Dave defiantly.“She has,” said the informant, “and it’s a boy.”

They ran home to find the truth, and sure enough there was motherwith a baby (me!) on her knee. Dave was disgusted, ran upstairs andrefused to come down. Next morning when he appeared for breakfastmy mum asked him a question. “What do you think then, shall wekeep him?”“I suppose so,” said Dave, somewhat reluctantly.

So that was my not very auspicious welcome into the world, and itmakes me smile every time I think about it. I can laugh because Iknow that although I was a surprise, and unplanned, I was wantedand loved. But more than that, I know my conception was noaccident as far as God was concerned. He knew me from the verybeginning and had a plan and purpose for my life.

This is what God said to Jeremiah, “Before I formed you in the womb Iknew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as aprophet to the nations (Jeremiah 1:5).”

Whatever the circumstances of your birth, remember you were madeby God and He has a purpose for your life. You are wanted and loved.

5TH MARCH - SHROVE TUESDAY: PANCAKE DAY

Ever wonder why we eat pancakes just before Lent? The traditiondates back to Anglo-Saxon times, when Christians spent Lent inrepentance and severe fasting.

So on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, thechurch bell would summon them to confession, where they would be ‘shriven’, or absolved fromtheir sins, which gives us Shrove Tuesday. Athome, they would then eat up their last eggsand fat, and making a pancake was the easiestway to do this. For the next 47 days, theypretty well starved themselves.

Pancakes feature in cookery books as far back as 1439, and today’spancake races are in remembrance of a panicked woman back in1445 in Olney, Buckinghamshire. She was making pancakes whenshe heard the shriving bell calling her to confession. Afraid she’d belate, she ran to the church in a panic, still in her apron, and stillholding the pan.

Flipping pancakes is also centuries old. A poem from Pasquil’s Palinin 1619 runs: “And every man and maide doe take their turne, Andtosse their Pancakes up for feare they burne.”

Some people have noted that the ingredients of pancakes can beused to highlight four significant things about this time of year: eggsstand for creation, flour is the staff of life, salt keeps things whole-some, and milk stands for purity.

Shrove Tuesday is always 47 days before Easter Sunday and fallsbetween 3rd February and 9th March.

The singing group at Illingworth MoorMethodist Church, “Hymns and Hers”,were recently asked to be in an episodeof Ackley Bridge. Filming took place atMount Zion Church on a cold and snowyafternoon and it was very interesting

seeing how this Channel 4 production was made. It surprised ushow many people were involved in the recording of this schooldrama plus the cast of youngsters and staff. We had a thoroughlyenjoyable experience and look forward to seeing the episode ontelevision sometime in the future.

8TH MARCH – WOODBINE WILLIE:BRINGING LOVE WITH CIGARETTESAND THE BIBLE

Here’s a ‘saint’ that the Church of England remembers fromthe 1st World War – the Revd. Geoffrey Studdert KennedyMC, or ‘Woodbine Willie’, as everyone knew this popular,much-loved army chaplain on the Western Front.Studdert Kennedy (27th June 1883 – 8th March 1929) hadbeen born in Leeds as the seventh of nine children. Afterreading divinity and classics at Trinity College Dublin, he’dstudied for ordination at Ripon Clergy College, and served his curacy at Rugby.By the time war broke out in 1914, Studdert Kennedy was vicar of St Paul’s,Worcester. He soon volunteered to go to the Western Front as a chaplain to the army. Life onthe front line in the trenches was a desperate affair, but soon Studdert Kennedy hadhit on a way of bringing a few moments of relief to the stressed out soldiers: as well asgood cheer he gave out copious amounts of ‘Woodbines’, the most popular cheapcigarette of the time. One colleague remembered Kennedy: “he’d come down into the trenches and sayprayers with the men, have a cuppa out of a dirty tin mug and tell a joke as good asany of us. He was a chain smoker and always carried a packet of Woodbine cigarettesthat he would give out in handfuls to us lads. That’s how he got his nickname. Hecame down the trench one day to cheer us up. Had his Bible with him as usual. Well,I’d been there for weeks, unable to write home, of course, we were going over the toplater that day. I asked him if he would write to my sweetheart at home, tell her I wasstill alive and, so far, in one piece… years later, after the war, she showed me theletter he’d sent, very nice it was. A lovely letter. My wife kept it until she died.”Kennedy was devoted to his men, so much so that in 1917 he was awarded theMilitary Cross at Messines Ridge, after running into no man’s land in order to help thewounded during an attack on the German frontline.During the war, Kennedy supported the British military effort with enthusiasm, butsoon after the war, he turned to Christian socialism and pacifism. He was given chargeof St Edmunds in Lombard St, London, and took to writing a number of poems abouthis war experiences: Rough Rhymes of a Padre (1918) and More Rough Rhymes(1919). He went on to work for the Industrial Christian Fellowship, for whom he didspeaking tours. It was on one of these tours that he was taken ill, and died inLiverpool in 1929. He was only 46.His compassion and generosity in the face of the horrors of the Western Front wasimmortalised in the song ‘Absent Friends’: “Woodbine Willie couldn’t rest untilhe’d/given every bloke a final smoke/before the killing.” He himself had oncedescribed his chaplain’s ministry as taking “a box of fags in your haversack, and a greatdeal of love in your heart.”

JEREMY HUNT SPEAKS ON BEHALF OF PERSECUTEDCHRISTIANSThe Foreign Secretary, Jeremy Hunt, has been voicing his deep concernfor Christians facing persecution worldwide. He has warned that a“misguided political correctness’ must not inhibit the Government’sresponse to religious persecution, and that ‘with Christianity on the vergeof extinction in its birthplace, it is time for concerted action that beginsto turn the tide.” In the Middle East, the Christian population has fallenfrom 20 per cent to five per cent of the total during the past 100 years.Mr. Hunt has also said that he is not convinced that Britain’s response tothe threats facing Christians had “always matched the scale of theproblem, nor taken account of the hard evidence that Christians oftenendure a disproportionate burden of persecution.“Perhaps this is born out of the very British sense of awkwardness at‘doing God’. Perhaps it’s an awareness of our colonial history, or, becauseBritain is a traditionally Christian country, some are fearful of being seento help Christians in desperate need.”Whatever the reason, Mr. Hunt said, “We must never allow a misguidedpolitical correctness to inhibit our response to the persecution of anyreligious community.”Mr. Hunt appointed the Bishop of Truro, the Rt. Rev. Philip Mounstephento lead a global review of the situation, and to report back by Easter. The Bishop is a former executive leader of the Church Mission Society.

WHAT MILLENNIALS LOOK FOR IN A JOBOlder generations may seek job security, but millennials are puttingwork-life balance as their first priority when it comes to choosing work.A recent survey by YouGov found that one third said work-life balancewas the most important factor, followed by pay, the work culture, andthe length of the commute. Long-term job security came last.Young people expect to have between three to five jobs over theirlife-time. Just six per cent wanted to stay with their present companyfor more than five years.

He showed us some of the street art of Rome, which was very intricate and thought provoking.Back home he went around the country taking excellent pictures of avariety of subjects. He showed us The PieceHall, Salford Quays, a Community Orchard in Mansfield, Sheffield ArtGallery and Newcastle along with many other locations. It really was a very interesting talk and, on behalf of the 30members present, Winifred Carr gave a vote of thanks to Paul.At the March meeting Jean Stilt will be talking about The QueenMother’s visit to South Africa.
