Communal Reconciliation Monday, Dec. 19 at 7:30 pm

Fourth Sunday of Advent

December 18, 2016

First Reading: Isaiah 7:10-14

In today’s passage, the prophet Isaiah speaks to the Jewish King Ahaz, who is more interested in politics than religion. Isai-ah announces that the wife of Ahaz will soon have a son, who will be a better king than his father. Christians have seen in this passage a deeper meaning, namely, Mary giving birth to Jesus.

Second Reading: Romans 1:1-7

The opening words of the letter to the Romans are an example of the clas-sical style of letter writing at that time: Paul first identifies himself, extends a greeting, gives some helpful information about himself, and personalizes his letter by naming the community to whom he is writing. Paul highlights the fact that Jesus was de-scended from the Royal House of David. Early Christians (many of them from the lower class) were particularly proud of this.

Over the past few days as I meet and talk to people I am often asked a question that is commonly asked this time of the year which is, “Are you ready for Christmas?” As a priest and parish leader, there are so many things to attend to. But I am not alone in this effort. We have wonderful priests staff and volunteers who help us prepare for the feast of the incar-nation. I would like to express the gratitude of our parish to everyone who makes Christmas a meaningful and joyful celebration here at Christ the King. Fr. Brian Joyce called me to his study this week and told me that he wanted to give me the gift of a banner, to be displayed at Christ the King. And I said “Thank you for get-ting me into some holy trouble.” Some of us may look at this and say it is about politics, but I say it is about who we are in Christ. “I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” This Christmas, as we remember how the holy family was forced to flee from violence and take refuge in a foreign land, let's send a powerful message that our churches will con-tinue to be places of sanctuary for immigrants and refugees. Reflecting on the first Christmas, Pope Francis highlights what today’s poor experiences. “He was born into the poverty of this world; there was no room in the inn for him and his family. He found shelter and support in a stable and was laid in a manger for animals. And yet, from this nothingness, the light of God’s glory shines forth.” There is so much of God’s glory in the poor, in the excluded and unwelcome. May the Babe of Bethlehem lead us to dis-cover His glory in the least of these.

We at Christ the King want to open our doors to refugees and immigrants. Who knows? Jesus could be one of those seeking sanctuary! We know that each and every family is a holy family and the individuals and families who have fled violence don’t just need our prayers, they need haven. We open our doors to today’s Josephs and Marys. I am so grateful to so many of you who have tried to help our Afghan family during the past weeks. It has been a difficult time for them as well as for those who are trying to minis-ter to them. I am grateful to you and say, it is all in the Spirit of Christmas. In his Christ-mas message last year, Bishop Barber wrote, “Let’s do this together in the same spirit in which we would welcome Mary and Joseph as they looked for a place at the inn,' he said. 'If we would welcome the Holy Family to our parish and provide a place where Mary could give birth to the Christ child, shouldn’t we do the same in the name of Jesus to those who come to us for help? 'For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me.' (Matt 25:35).” Christmas is like Super Bowl. It may be our one time all year that someone comes in and hears a message of hope in a world that’s hurting or hopeless. Always remember the reason why we are here in Church in the first place. This is an opportunity to touch somebody that has thought about going to church for months but they haven’t. And, we know, we don’t get a lot of opportunities with those folks. This is a great opportunity for evangelization. Let us work together as a parish to make our worship space a welcoming sanctuary for all people. Paulson

Pray for Our Sick May you be wrapped up in God’s love, Found deep in His everlasting

wings, Carried and kept, safe and cherished.

May the healing power of Christ breathe across your being now.
