News & Reports

Impro Inspiration… Finally there is something to really get you going in the morn-

ing that doesn't involve leotards. Thursday mornings at 9.30am at the Blue Doors in Willunga, shake out the cobwebs, fire up the grey matter and get the day off to a great start with Impro Inspiration classes. Based on TheatreSportsT, the comedy improvisation for-mat behind "Thank God You're Here!" and "Whose Line Is It Any-way?"

"Impro Inspiration" classes challenge, entertain and get you to giggle. Following the novelty rules of TheatreSportsT games, you'll stretch your mind and stimulate your creativity as you impro-vise hilarious group sketches. For some this releases stress, for others it boosts confidence, develops communication skills and or increases spontaneity, but for all it's the joy of working with rather than against others and sharing a great belly laugh.

There are no prerequisites and you don't need to be a stand up comedian, in fact, it's the ideal way to revitalize your sense of hu-mour. We start very gradually, breaking down inhibitions with laughter, building trust with support activities, and playing games to develop group story telling skills. Although rarely used, there is always the option to pass.

The classes are run by nationally certified local TheatreSportsT coach Jeff Simmons who has trained in Canada with Keith Johns-tone (the creator of TheatreSportsT), in Sydney with Lynne Pierse (author of TheatreSports Down Under) and taught since 2002. Improvisation is a great personal development experience, but for many, it also becomes the inspiration to perform on stage. There are always plenty of opportunities for this with Jeff and wife Anne's theatre company Impro NOW! They hold the International Theatre-Sports License for South Australia and put on a show locally each term. They conduct shows and workshops for schools, corporate and private functions and host “TheatreSports Clash of the Theatre Titans” in the Fringe Festival. Sold out every year since 2004, “The Clash” sees the best Fringe improvisers from throughout the known universe competing in the red raw, full contact smack-down that is TheatreSportsT. In this high energy fusion of theatre and stand up comedy, teams sing, dance mime or do whatever it takes to earn audience scores and avoid the hanging judge’s elimination horn. The winners get to perform their own Fringe show in a min-ute.

Whether you want to strut your stuff on stage, harness the power of laughter, or just have some fun with friends and you are turning 11 or older in 2009, there is a class for you. Try the first session and if you don't wish to continue it's free.

Juniors 11 & 12: Wednesdays 4-5.30pm. Youth 13 and over: Mondays 4-5.30pm. Adults: Mondays 7.30-9pm or Thursdays 9.30-11pm. Performance Troupe: Tuesdays 7.30-9pm. Classes be-gin the week commencing February 2 and can be joined at any time.

Enquiries and bookings: Jeff Simmons (w) 08 8556 1242 [email protected]

Debt Relief Info Night… Are You Struggling to Pay the Bills? –

You’re not alone. Come along to Debt Relief Information

Forum on Wednesday 18 February at Noar-lunga. The free Forum will commence from 6:00pm at the Don Hopgood Theatre Foyer, Ramsay Place, Noarlunga Centre.

The global financial crisis is placing in-creased pressure on local family budgets al-ready stretched by the cost of living. “As a result of the global financial crisis, many Southern Adelaide residents who are unsure where to turn have contacted my office seeking affordable financial guidance to help balance their budgets,” said Amanda Rishworth.

“This session is designed to provide infor-mation and advice from a range of people to point local residents in the right direction." Panellists include representatives from the Fi-nancial Ombudsman, Uniting Care SA, Centre-link, Legal Aid and St Vincent de Paul. Each panel expert will be available to personally consult with residents after the formal introduc-tion of each organisation. “The free informa-tion session will help advise people in our com-munity who are having difficulty paying their bills or managing their household budget," Ms Rishworth said.

Mr Owen Covick, Associate Professor in Economics at Flinders University will chair the Forum. Mr Covick is co-author of the best-selling State of Play series of books on Austra-lian economic policy. Ms Rishworth is pleased that Mr Covick offered to facilitate this impor-tant information forum.

“Associate Professor Covick will be able to provide a valuable insight into the current eco-nomic climate and how we can plan for it,” Ms Rishworth said. There will be information stalls hosted by all panellists and other commu-nity organisations including Hackham West Community Centre and Anglicare SA. The Forum has received a great response from local organisations and the wider community.

“I urge residents in our community to come along and gain valuable advice on how they can better manage their cost of living pressures."

A light supper will be provided. Amanda Rishworth’s office 08 8186 2588.
