WINTER LEARNING PROGRAM 2015

Dear students:

The Winter Learning Program (WLP) is a hands-on, experiential learning program where students take a variety of interest-generated courses on a Pass/Fail basis. This program, which lasts two weeks in January, is a learning environment in which students attend workshops, internships, and weeklong seminars, and participate in “mobile classrooms” on topics such as: Georgia History, “Spamalot” set-building, Puerto Rico, scuba, cooking school, visiting art studios, rock band, theatre, science fiction films, Internships and many others. Students choose a class from the seminar schedule and then spend the week learning about that topic.

Below is information about the 2015 Winter Learning Program (WLP) seminars. After reading the packet, please choose the seminar you would like to take. Each seminar is for a specific period and you must take the class for that entire time. We will be having a Winter Learning Prep day on December 12, 2014 where all the final information will be distributed. Please print and complete the sign-up sheet (2nd page) indicating your seminar choice. Turn the sign- up sheet (and any required permission slips) in to Annette no later than Friday, October 31, 2014. Please do not hesitate to talk to me or the trip chaperones if you have any questions. Sincerely,

Annette Higgins Annette Higgins Asst. Principal PreUpper

SCUBA TRIP

CODE OF CONDUCT AND BEHAVIOR The following guidelines have been established so that each person in our group will have a safe and rewarding trip. Our objectives are to have fun, learn a lot and peacefully enjoy each other’s company for five days. Failure to follow the trip rules seriously jeopardizes the entire group’s learning experience. The Community Structure/Levels System applies 24 hours a day. Please re-read your Levels guidelines if you have any questions about our expectations. You must also abide by any rules and guidelines set by the facilities we are visiting. The consequence of any significant infraction will be to send you home or have your parents come get you. Remember, you are Level L’s and R’s and are representatives of the school.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN

Realize that you bring all electronic devices your own risk. Teachers will not be responsible for any loss or damage. All electronic devices are to be used only on the plane or bus or in your rooms during specific hours. Any electronic device that is observed in use during lectures will immediately be confiscated for the remainder of the trip. It is extremely inconsiderate for your attention to be directed somewhere else when a person is trying to share new information with you. No loud noises, voices or music in the rooms. If anyone besides you can hear your music, it is too loud.

THE NIGHTS THE LIGHTS GO OUT IN FLORIDA

When “lights out” is called, you must turn out the lights for the night, be in your own bed, be quiet, and stay in your own bed unless you need to go to the bathroom or have an emergency situation. No loud noises, music, horseplay or things that go bump in the night. Do not get “medieval” on anyone at any time. Teachers reserve the right to make all roommate and sleeping assignment.

ON YOUR BEST BEHAVIOR

Keep your hands to yourself. No horseplay, touching, grabbing or touching another person’s property without his/her permission. You will be in situations that will require your constant attention and you will miss vital information if you are not focused. Respect the property of where we are staying and where we visit. Payment for any damages will be the responsibility of the parent of the student involved. Stay focused and attentive as we take part in tours and programs. Use all your strategies to help you stay on task. Follow all rules established by the locations visited.

FAMOUS LAST WORDS

Be a problem-solver and team player. Remember our objectives on this trip. Part of being on a team requires that each person respects and takes care of every other person on his/her team. You have worked hard to be able to go on this mobile classroom. Let’s learn a lot and have a great time doing it!

giant Saguaro, prickly pear, ocotillo, and aloe vera cacti. We’ll dismount in a beautiful sandy

wash, tie up our horses, and enjoy the multi-hued colors of the surrounding mountain ranges

while munching on some good vittles (and sneaking a snack for our horse). Tonight we’ll watch

“Stagecoach”, a John Wayne movie filed in Monument Valley. We’ll also talk about the Navajo

Indian tribe.

Tuesday, January 13th, 2015

Today we head out to Monument Valley, located on the Navajo Indian Reservation. We’ll stop by

some great places to buy turquoise and trinkets. We’ll see the homes, schools, and reservations

on the reservation, and catch an occasional glimpse of a Navajo “Hogan”. We’ll arrive at our

hotel, The View, just in time for the world’s most beautiful sunset.

Wednesday, January 14th, 2015

Today we wake up to a breathtaking sunrise over the desert, and then our Navajo guides take us

on a morning horseback ride through the most spectacular scenery in North America. We’ll

explore the famous “Mittens” buttes, featured in hundreds of movies, plus exploring many natural

wonders carved out by nature. We’ll learn about Navajo culture, and study the geology of the

incredible multi-layered rock formations. In the afternoon, we’ll hike through the amazing

landscape, and explore canyons and petroglyphs created by the land’s earliest inhabitants. In the

evening, we’ll enjoy and authentic Navajo dinner, then enjoy a mind-boggling multi-colored

sunset over the buttes.

Thursday, January 15th, 2015

This morning we visit a Navajo museum which features the story of the WWII Code Talkers, and

also features Native American clothing and art work. Then it’s time to head back to the ranch.

Friday, January 16th, 2015

We’re back in the saddle again. We’ll have a great morning ride with our favorite horses, then

this afternoon head out on our favorite hike to collect old shell casings from WWII. After the hike,

we’ll try our hand at roping a plastic steer. Tonight is riddle night, where we try to stump all you

wranglers!

Saturday, January 17th, 2015

Today we kiss our horses “goodbye”, take a flight home to Atlanta to join the “City Slickers.”

Dang!

WINTER LEARNING PROGRAM 2015

Dear Students: Attached is information regarding our internship seminar of the Winter Learning Program. This seminar is of your own design and will require you to set up your own transportation. Traditionally, internships have been “job-shadowing” opportunities; however, we encourage students to explore all interest areas. In the past, students have interned in our Lower School as well as other schools as teacher aides, others have worked in vets offices in limited capacities or worked in offices. We have even had some young coaches! You may choose to do your internship either week of Winter Learning. I suggest that if you want to do an internship, choose what seminar you want to participate in and then do your internship the other week. Internships are usually one week long, but could be extended for unusual situations. If you have an interest, why not explore it!! Students must contact the company that they would like to internship with and the company must agree with Mill Springs Academy Internship requirements before completing the form. Your supervisor must be willing to complete an evaluation form at the end of your internship. Please return the internship seminar form no later than November 14, 2014.. List your duties and responsibilities in the internship description section. Please see me if you have any questions or are looking for ideas. I will not approve any internship that is dangerous, age-inappropriate or without academic merit. Start thinking!

If at any time, the student is uncomfortable with the duties/responsibilities of the internship, the student should notify supervisor immediately and parents contacted to pick up student if necessary. Mill Springs should also be notified of the situation – call Susan Sanders or Annette Higgins at (770) 360-1336.

Students are responsible for arranging transportation to and from the internship

Should last the entire week – Monday through Friday

Should not extend beyond the school day (8:15am – 3:15pm) without parental and MSA permission

Student intern will call MSA and speak with either Susan Sanders or Annette Higgins on Wednesday and Friday of the internship.

Student will clarify the appropriate attire with his/her supervisor. If possible, student should wear MSA school uniform or at the very least, one piece of the uniform with the MSA logo (Hoodie, jacket or polo shirt)

Student needs to keep MSA school ID with him/her at all times.

Student will follow the rules and guidelines of the company for which he/she is interning. The student will also follow and maintain the MSA three Cs – courteous, considerate and cooperative. If at any time the student is unable to exhibit the three Cs, the student will be asked to terminate the internship.

At the end of the internship, the student will ask the supervisor to complete the evaluation form. This form should be faxed to Mill Springs Academy, Attention Susan Sanders, (678) 893-7865.

The student will prepare a presentation of his/her own design describing his/her internship and what he/she learned and experienced. The presentation will be on display in the PreUpper building. The presentation is due on the following Monday after the end of the internship. I would suggest that the intern start working on the presentation at the beginning of the internship instead of waiting until the end.

Please see Susan or Annette if you have additional questions. We are happy to make suggestions regarding presentations.

TRIP HIGHLIGHTS Old San Juan Cathedral The Cathedral of San Juan Bautista is the Roman Catholic cathedral of the Archdiocese of San Juan de Puerto Rico. The cathedral is one of the oldest buildings in San Juan, located in Old San Juan, and is the second oldest cathedral in the Americas.

La Fortaleza La Fortaleza is the current official residence of the Governor of Puerto Rico. It was built between 1533 and 1540 to defend the harbor of San Juan. The structure is also known as Palacio de Santa Catalina. Ponce Art Museum Museo de Arte de Ponce, is an art

museum located on Las Americas Avenue in Ponce, Puerto Rico. It is considered one of the finest museums in Puerto Rico. It houses a collection of European art, as well as work by Puerto Rican artists.

Bio-luminescent Bay The water luminescence is triggered by dinoflagellates, oceanic plankton which is able to generate an emerald green and ultramarine illumination when water is physically disturbed. Dinoflagellates are incredibly delicate microorganisms and are very sensible to the environment conditions such as balance of salt in the water, local climate, deepness of lagoon, air and water pollution, etc. Each one of these the aspects make bio bay a one of a kind, vulnerable ecosystem.

Page 38: Winter learning program 2015

El Yunque Rain Forest & La Mina waterfall Located on the Caribbean Island of Puerto Rico in the Greater Antilles group, the El Yunque National Forest is the sole tropical rain forest in the U.S. National Forest System. The forest’s relatively small 28, 000 acre size belies its importance. It differs significantly from all the other U.S. National Forests because of its year-round tropical climate and immense biodiversity. Reserva Natural Arrecifes de la Cordillera Near the municipality of Fajardo and off Puerto Rico’s eastern coast, lies the Reserva Natural Arrecifes de La Cordillera, an agglomeration of small, uninhabited islands and cays protected by the Department of Natural Resources. The main isles of the reserve include Cayo Icacos, Cayo Diablo, Isla Palomino and Palominito. The plentiful coral reefs and rock formations that thrive below the surface make La Cordillera one of the preferred diving spots in Puerto Rico for amateurs and professionals alike.

El Morro El Morro Fort, or officially Castillo de San Felipe del Morro, stands guard at the entrance to San Juan harbor as a reminder of a by-gone era when invading countries would attempt sea attacks to take this prized city and harbor. This beautiful 400 year old 6-level fort was named in honor of Spain’s King Philip II. The Fort wasn’t initially built as the huge structure that you see today. It has gone through many enlargements and modifications, from the time it was first constructed by Spain through the time that it was occupied by the US Army.

Medication Preparation for Field Trips

Dear Parents, We are requesting that you prepare your child’s medication for overnight field trips. Please prepare according to the following procedure:

Complete the medication form that is included in the information packet. Include all medications (regular and PRN) with complete instructions. Please use one envelope for each time of day. Use separate envelopes for each day. If you need envelopes, the school will provide them. Please include 1-2 days of extra doses and mark- EXTRA DOSE- on the envelope along with your child’s name.

Label the envelope as follows

Upper right corner: day Middle: student’s name Under name: time of day to be given

There is no need to put the name of the medication on the envelope, as the meds are listed on the medication form.

PRN medications (as needed for anxiety, migraines, stomach, etc.) should be sent in their original bottles with complete instructions on the med form.

Inhalers and Epipens need to be marked with your child’s name, in case they become separated from the box.

We realize this may seem like a lot of extra work on your part, but with so many students taking medication, we feel this procedure will lessen the chance of medication errors. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding. Nurse Ann

Please return the internship seminar form no later than October 31, 2014. List your duties and responsibilities in the internship description section. Please see me if you have any questions or are looking for ideas. I will not approve any internship that is dangerous, age-inappropriate or without academic merit. Start thinking!

Internship Guidelines

Internships must not be dangerous, age-inappropriate or without academic merit. Students will not be exposed to any inappropriate visual or physical environment, materials, stimulus or activities. If at any time, the student is uncomfortable with the duties/responsibilities of the internship, the student should notify supervisor immediately and parents contacted to pick up student if necessary. Mill Springs should also be notified of the situation – call Susan Sanders or Annette Higgins at (770) 360-1336
