    Human Brain

    Our brain's potential is infinite.

Its divided into the Left hemisphere and the Right hemisphere.

    Left HemisphereCommunicates by using

words, has highlydeveloped verbal abilities,is logical and systematic, concerned with mattersas they are.

    Right HemisphereCommunicates using images

(pictures), has highlydeveloped spatial abilities, isintuitive and imaginative, concerned with emotions andfeelings.

    Facts about the Brain

    Brain can feel no pain.

Neurons develop @ 250,000 neurons per minute during early pregnancy

Every time you recall a memory or have a new thought, you are creating anew connection in your brain

The average number of thoughts that humans are believed to experienceeach day is 70,000

Brain weight and size is not indicative of mental ability

The brain can live for 4 to 6 minutes without oxygen, and then it beginsto die. No oxygen for 5 to 10 minutes will result in permanent braindamage.

    Distinction BetweenM

    ind And Brain

Our brain is the 1.4Kg (3 pounds)oftangible, convoluted gray

    matter that residesin our heads.

Our mind isthe intangiblecontroller of ourrealities including ourthoughts, knowledge, implicit assumptions, values, emotions, intentions, habits, andbehavior.

    What are mind maps?

Amind map is a diagram used torepresent words, ideas, tasks, orother items linked to and arrangedaround a central key word or idea.

    How to create a MindMap?

    Guidelines for creating MindMaps:

    1) Start in the center with an image of the topic, using at least 3 colors.

    2) Use images, symbols, codes, and dimensions throughout yourMind Map.

    3) Select key words and print using upper or lower case letters.

    4) Each word/image is best alone and sitting on its own line.

    5) The lines should be connected, starting from the central image. Thecentral lines are thicker, organic and flowing, becoming thinner asthey radiate out from the centre.

  • 8/7/2019 Workshop4-Brainstorming and Mind Mapping

    10/24

    6) Make the lines the same length as the word/image they

    support.

    7) Use multiple colors throughout the Mind Map, for visualstimulation and also to encode or group.

    8) Develop your own personal style of MindMapping.

    9) Use emphasis and show associations in yourMind Map.

    10) Keep the Mind Map clear by using radialhierarchy, numerical order or outlines toembrace your branches.

Mind maps can be made either roughly by hand or

by using softwares like Novamind512, reeMind,SciPlore MindMapping, XMIND etc.

    MindMap and its use

It is used To generate, visualize, structure, andclassify ideas

As an aid in study, organization, problem solving, decision making, and

Mind maps can be used for:

    Problem solving

    Notes taking

    Outline/framework design

    BrainstormingMarriage of words and visuals

    Individual expression of creativity

Condensing material into a concise and memorable

    format

Team building or synergy creating activity

    Brainstorming

Brainstorming is a groupcreativity technique designed togenerate a large number of ideas

for the solution of a problem.

Brainstorming encourages allparticipants to have an equal

    say in the process

    How to UseMindMaps for Brainstorming?

Mind Mapping is a graphical representation of the way we generateand organize our ideas in our brain.

So it is a great choice to use when we want to generate more ideasand here is how to use for that:

    Step 1

Take a piece of blank paper, turn it landscape (ideally) andwrite your starting idea in the centre of the page

Step 2 when your first idea comes to mind, add it as a main branchto your fledgling mind map.

Step 3 when your second and subsequent ideas come to mind either

add them to an existing branch (if they are related) or start a newbranch if there is no logical place to put your new idea.

Step 4 keep repeating the above process until you have got moreideas than you think you will ever need.

    CREATIVITY

Paul Foreman, the prolific mind mapper ofMindMap Inspiration says -

"Mind maps open the floodgates to creativity and are a brilliant formatfor thinking. Occasionally to fire the imagination, a new theme, centralstarting point or idea is needed. Whilst "thinking outside the box" hasbecome a familiar term, harnessing ideas from the silence within may

be a relatively new concept. Tapping into our inner resources canprovide the necessary armory for idea creation.

Mind map + Brainstorming = Unique Creativity

    How to UseMindMaps for Creativity?

    Activity

Imagine we received a client brief, his company is called Green and it is anenvironment oriented one with the goal of trees conservation and he need s a logo.

In the briefing he specify that he wants the color green for the logo and this musthave a nature element.

Our goal is to create a unique and outstanding logo.

In groups make a mind map and use it to create a logo for the client.

Now that we have the Mind Map of our brainstorming lets find the ones who willhelps us make our logo (based on the example).

We can use trees and leaves who are also related to life. Lets use this threeelements to make a simple logo.

And the result can be something like this:

We can have an infinite amount of possibilities, but its only an exampleto demonstrate the essence of Mind Map in our brainstorming process.

    Notes Taking andMemorizing

Mind Maps are a great way for students to make notes onall of the information they receive.

    What is traditional note making?

Traditionally, when studying, we make notes in a linear, list style by making linesand lines of information.

    Why are linear notes bad?

By making notes in this way we end up with ugly, dense lines of text which are difficultto read and understand.

By writing notes in list form you are forced to isolate pieces of information, and youwill feel unable to make connections between your ideas.

You find ideas written in this way hard to read, and you don't look forward toreviewing your notes

    22/24

How to UseMindMaps for Notes Taking?

    1) Write the title of the subject you're exploring in

the center of the page, and draw a circle around it.This is shown by the circle marked 1 in Figure 1,above.2) As you come across major subdivisions orsubheadings of the topic (or important facts thatrelate to the subject) draw lines out from thiscircle. Label these lines with these subdivisions orsubheadings. These are shown by the lines

    marked 2 in Figure 1.

    3) As you "burrow" into the subject and uncoveranother level of information (furthersubheadings, or individual facts) belonging tothe subheadings above, draw these as lineslinked to the subheading lines. These are shownby the lines marked 3 in Figure 1.

    4) Finally, for individual facts or ideas, draw lines out from the appropriateheading line and label them. These areshown by the lines marked 4 in Figure 1.

    Improve memory withMindMapping

The act of Mind Mapping increasesAssociationimaginationcreativity

Mind Maps only contain keywords. This means that the information to

remember is prompted by short, memorable words with meaning - not reams of

    notes!

Mind Maps promote associations and connections

Mind Maps use colour and images, which stimulate your imagination.

How canMind maps help in improving memory ?
