BASICS

• RESULT SCORE = time, distance or height converted into points with IAAF scoring tables

• E.g. 100m 10.12 = 1165 points

• PLACING SCORE = bonus points awarded for finishing position

• E.g. Winner of National Championships = 100 points

• PERFORMANCE SCORE = RESULT SCORE + PLACING SCORE

• E.g. 1165 + 100 = 1265 points

• RANKING SCORE = AVERAGE OF BEST 5 PERFORMANCE SCORES

Page 7: WORLD RANKINGS...workshop structure mf survey world rankings basics world rankings and doha 2019 case studies tokyo qualification iaaf statistical service key takeaways questions and

DECLARED OBJECTIVES

• Rank athletes MORE EFFECTIVELY

• Stimulate MORE COMPETITION in general – athletes need to compete 5 times (in most cases) to be ranked

• REDUCE WEIGHT OF “DOUBTFUL” results – they average out across the 5 best performance scores

• Drive the competition structure and encourage athletes to SUPPORT NATIONAL (high scoring opportunity) AND AREA CHAMPIONSHIPS

DIAMOND LEAGUE – IMPACT ON T2020 QUALIFICATION

Based on observation of 2019 DL and T2020 target numbers (in 32 DL events – no Road or CE)

▪ More than 50% of athletes qualified through WRx would have not competed in the DL (654 athletes from 1288)

▪ Of the 50% which competed in the DL, 70% would have the Entry Standard so participation in the DL for qualification becomes irrelevant.

▪ In practice less than 15% athletes of the T2020 target numbers would be seeking to earn placing points in the DL
