We welcome you today, and always, just as you are: content or wiggly, confused or

confident. In this bulletin the whole congregation says the texts in bold.

When praying #togetherapart we recommend that you: actually sing the songs, and say

the responses out loud. We invite you to move your body to set your intention at

different parts, and we include the directions for sitting and standing which are ‘as you

are able’ and willing, because we welcome you just as you are. We also suggest that you

make a home altar space somewhere near the screen you watch on, or near your

telephone.

We are currently adopting the classic practice of Morning Prayer, because we are

suspending Holy Communion until it is safe to gather again. Yet the church and its

ministry continues while we are #togetherapart. If you would like to know more about

Christ Church and how we practice the Christian faith in this time and place, we invite

you to contact us.

1In you, O LORD, have I taken refuge; let me never be put to shame; *

deliver me in your righteousness.

2Incline your ear to me; *

make haste to deliver me.

3Be my strong rock, a castle to keep me safe, for you are my crag and my stronghold; *

The Lessons

FIRST READING: Acts 7:55-60

The people sit.

A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles.

55Filled with the Holy Spirit, [Stephen] gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus

standing at the right hand of God. 56“Look,” he said, “I see the heavens opened and the Son of

Man standing at the right hand of God!” 57But they covered their ears, and with a loud shout all

rushed together against him. 58Then they dragged him out of the city and began to stone him; and

the witnesses laid their coats at the feet of a young man named Saul. 59While they were stoning

Stephen, he prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” 60Then he knelt down and cried out in a loud

voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” When he had said this, he died.

HYMN Come, my Way, my Truth, my Life (The Call) (H 487)

SECOND READING: John 14.1-14

The people sit.

A Reading from the Gospel according to John.

Jesus said, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. In my

Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I

go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and

will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also. And you know the way

to the place where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are

going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the

life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you know me, you will know my

Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”

Page 7: Worship Plan for Sunday, May 10, 2020christchurchridleypark.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/05-10-2020.p… · 05-05-2020  · and in your lovingkindness save me. At the end of the

Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.” Jesus said to him,

“Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has

seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe

that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak

on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the

Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works

themselves. Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I

do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. I will do

whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If in my name

you ask me for anything, I will do it.”

HOMILY

THE APOSTLES’ CREED

Presider and People together, all standing.

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.

He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit

and born of the Virgin Mary.

He suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again.

He ascended into heaven,

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

Our Father, who art in heaven,

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

For doctors, nurses, hospital staff and medical researchers,

For those serving in the military and as first responders (names of those serving),

Almighty God, whom truly to know is everlasting life: Grant us so perfectly to know your Son

Jesus Christ to be the way, the truth, and the life, that we may steadfastly follow his steps in the

Gathering God, thank you for the loving-kindness of all mothers, those who have held us,

in every space and home, and help your church have the arms to welcome all whom you send for

us to steadfastly care for; we ask this in the name of Jesus Christ who told us that God desires to

gather us like a mother hen, with all her beloved under her tender wings. Amen.
