IntroductionDisplay T-20 Silent Letters on the overhead to review the Pattern Wordswith silent letters in this lesson. Point to, say, and chorally spell each
word. Chorally spell each word again and instruct students to place theirpointer fnger in ront o their mouth when they say the silent letter ineach word. As a visual guide, each silent letter is printed in orange. Invitea student to cross out the silent letter in the word. Repeat this processor all the words. Challenge students to fnd the two Pattern Words thatcontain two silent letter spelling patterns each. (knock, wrecker)
Directed Instruction1 Display T-21 Sounds to practice selecting sounds that are the same in
two words and to correctly say the pronunciation o a wordwithsilentletters. In exercises 15, read each word careully and have studentsidentiy which word has the same sound as the underlined letter. Inexercises 612, remind students that entry words in a dictionary havetheir pronunciation ater the word. Teach that the words withsilentletters have a dierent spelling than their pronunciation because thesilent letter is missing in the pronunciation. Point outthat an entry word may have more than one part o speech and more thanone defnition. Words with more than one defnition may have more thanone sample sentence. Words can also have multiple pronunciations. Invitestudents to identiy and circle the fve dictionary parts on the transparency.
