Northeast Conference Fans:
Welcome to the 2010 Northeast Conference Women’s Bowling Championship!
The NEC looks forward to an exciting championship here at Parkway Lanes. We hope it is a memorable experiencefor fans and student-athletes alike. During the next two days, over 70 talented bowlers on eight different teams willcompete in a double elimination bracket tournament. By Sunday evening, we will know if Fairleigh DickinsonUniversity was able to defend its title and win its second consecutive Northeast Conference bowlingchampionship.
Now in its 29th season, the NEC consists of 11 institutions of higher learning located throughout five states. TheConference is committed to providing opportunities for student-athletes to achieve their fullest potential both inathletic competition and in the classroom, as well as becoming an NCAA Division I leader for athletic success, academic achievement and integrity, sportsmanship, equity and diversity, community partnership and national engagement. NEC mem-ber institutions include Central Connecticut State, Fairleigh Dickinson, Long Island, Monmouth, Mount St. Mary's, Quinnipiac, RobertMorris, Sacred Heart, St. Francis (NY), Saint Francis (PA) and Wagner. Bryant University will become a core member of the NEC in 2012upon completion of the five-year NCAA Division I reclassification period.
NEC institutions span a number of diverse locations, from the urban bustle of Brooklyn, NY to the rural settings of Loretto, PA andEmmitsburg, MD, to the beaches and shoreline of West Long Branch, NJ. But when it comes to intercollegiate athletics, the goal of the NECis consistent - to provide its members the opportunity to participate in quality competition at the Division I level while operating programsthat are fully integrated in the academic mission of each institution. The NEC's commitment to academic excellence has translated intonational recognition for both individual student-athletes and the league's member institutions as a whole. NEC student-athletes consis-tently graduate at well above the national average and its athletic programs continue to be honored for their Graduation Success Rate(GSR) and Academic Progress Rate (APR) figures. On a conference-wide level, more than 2,000 student-athletes qualified for the NECAcademic Honor Roll in 2008-09, nearly a 25 percent increase from the previous year. Saint Francis (PA) posted the highest GPA in theconference to claim the NEC Institutional Academic Award for the first time.
On the field of play, the NEC has enjoyed many successes both regionally and nationally, competing in 21 NCAA championships each year. The future of the NEC looks even brighter with new facilities and improvements recently completed, under construction or in planningstages at a majority of the league's member institutions.
We also would like to thank you, the fans, for your support and tremendous enthusiasm of the sport of women's bowling.Enjoy the action!
Sincerely,
Noreen Morris, Commissioner
Message To SpectatorsNortheast Conference member institutions value the principles of sportsmanship and the ideal ofpursuing victory with honor in intercollegiate athletics. The Conference believes that athleticsshould be conducted in a way that reflects positively on the individual participants and institu-tions. The essential elements of sportsmanship and ethics in sports are embodied in the conceptof character building and seven core principles: respect, responsibility, fairness, honesty, integ-rity, caring and civility. The highest potential of sports is achieved when competition reflects theseseven principles.
The NEC has communicated this message through public service announcements that air on televisedfootball and basketball games, public address announcements at all events and signage on eachmember campus. The Conference also implemented a new Team Sportsmanship Award program in2008-09 to recognize those teams and student-athletes who adhere to the principles of sportsman-ship and pursue victory with honor. Saint Francis (PA) finished the year with a league-high sixsportsmanship awards, which are voted on by student-athletes and coaches following the conclusionof each athletic season.
In 2009-10, the NEC is partnering with the NCAA on a "Respect" campaign to address sportsmanship and fan behavior issues through education, communication and enforcement when problems arise.

2009-10 Bowlers of the Week 2009-10 Rookies of the Week
Elmwood Park, NJ - It was a weekend-long progression for Fairleigh Dickinson, one that ended with the Knights becoming the inaugural NortheastConference Bowling Champions.
Third-seeded FDU swept past top-seeded Kutztown, 4-0 [223-142, 221, 126, 232-167, 199-181], in the 2009 NEC Championship Match on Sunday atParkway Lanes. All matches at the first-ever Conference Championship followed a best-of-seven baker game format.
“We built momentum as the event continued,” commented Fairleigh Dickinson head coach Michael LoPresti whose team will go before the NCAASelection Committee sporting an overall 111-27 (.804) record. “We just kept getting better and better all the way through to the climax.”
Before the Knights could think about celebrating, they had to successfully navigate through a championship bracket that featured five of the nation’s top-20 teams according to the latest edition of the National Tenpin Coaches Association Top 20 Poll. The Knights outlasted No. 16 Adelphi in seven games and needed only four games to sweep past No. 19 St. Francis (NY) on the Tournament’s first day.Adelphi received a grudge match opportunity when it faced FDU again on Sunday, but by that time the Knights were locked into a groove.
“It started with Erica Perez [on Saturday] and by the end we were firing on all cylinders,” LoPresti said.
All-NEC first team selection Erica Perez (Carteret, NJ/Carteret) provided a spark Saturday when she rolled a strike 16 times over her final 22opportunities on the afternoon.
The third-year Knight and her team were in high gear right from the start on Sunday. Fairleigh Dickinson, whose arsenal includes three all-NEC bowlers, fired fast out of the gate in both of their championship round matches. The Knights rolled a 233-pin baker game to open an eventual 4-1 series win over Adelphi before starting their sweep of Kutztown with a 223-pin bakerperformance.
FDU’s first four frames of its championship match against Kutztown consisted of a strike, 9-spare, strike, and another 9-spare. The Knights’ two strikesin the first three frames of a 223-142 game one victory would turn out to be more than 25 percent of Kutztown’s entire strike total for the match. Thetalented, but young Bears, totaled only seven strikes during four baker games on the championship stage.
“We’re young and we had never been here before,” said Kutztown head coach Joe Ambrose, whose program is only in its second season of existence.“FDU was outstanding and we ran out of gas by the end of a long season.”
Game two resulted in more of the same frustration for the young Kutztown team. Fairleigh Dickinson notched a strike followed by four 9-spare framesthe first time through the order while Kutztown did not make its first mark until the sixth frame. FDU left little room for KU to catch up as it rolled fivestraight strikes the second time down the lineup, the fifth of which came from Perez.
The All-NEC First Teamer went 15-for-29 during strike opportunities in Sunday’s two victories.
The final day of competition began with three teams holding out hope for the title. Third-seeded Fairleigh Dickinson held the edge over top-seededKutztown and No. 4 seed Adelphi as it was the lone team to make it through early round play undefeated.
Adelphi was the first of the three to fall. FDU took responsibility for eliminating the Panthers, 4-1, in the first best-of-seven baker match of the day.
Adelphi began the match by registering a 9-spare, strike, 9-spare, and another strike over its first four frames, but the Panthers’ impressive start wasonly modest compared to that of FDU.
“We wanted to make a statement out of the gate and take control right away,” said head coach Michael Lopresti. “The ladies did just that.”The Knights struck six consecutive frames to open the contest with junior Nichole Toto (Piscataway, NJ/Bishop George Ahr) doubling at the topof the lineup on the way to a 233-187 first game victory.
Facing elimination and down two games to none, Adelphi rallied in its third baker game against FDU. The Panthers trailed by three pins heading into theninth frame before its two NEC all-rookie honorees stood up. Freshman Danielle Merino (College Point, NY/St. Francis Prep) rolled a ninth-frame strike to set up second team all-league bowler Erica Drake (Miller Place, NY/Floral Park) who doubled in the tenth to solidify a 210-184victory.
Fairleigh Dickinson responded right back in game four to take a commanding 3-1 series lead. FDU sophomore Sara Litteral (Chesterfield, MI/L’anse Creuse North) all but sealed the 209-151 baker win with her strike in the ninth frame before Perez delivered an exclamation point with herTurkey in the 10th.
