Dear Parents and Guardians This week we celebrate National Reconciliation Week between 27 May and 3 June. These dates mark two significant events within our nation’s history that have helped us along the path towards reconciliation within Australia. On 27 May 1967, over 90% of Australians voted in favour of a change to our Constitution giving the Commonwealth Parliament the power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and to recognise them in the national census. This was truly a defining moment in our nation’s history. On 3 June 1992, the High Court of Australia handed down its decision in the Mabo case that overturned the legal fiction that Australia was terra nullius (nobody’s land) at the time of European settlement and recognised the possibility of native title for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who could establish a continuing connection with their land that existed prior to European settlement and continues today. This is one of the most seminal judicial decisions in the legal history of our country. At Xavier College we want to stand in solidarity with the indigenous people of our land. In 1986, Pope John Paul II said in his address to Aboriginal Australians in Alice Springs, “You are part of Australia and Australia is part of you. And the Church herself in Australia will not be fully the Church that Jesus wants her to be until you have made your contribution to her life and until that contribution has been joyfully received by others.” The theme for this year’s Reconciliation Week is Let’s talk recognition”. Last week, Ms Lois Peeler addressed the students and staff on the Senior Campus about her journey as an Aboriginal woman and why reconciliation is so important. She was a member of the Sapphires and is currently the Principal of Worawa Aboriginal College in Healesville. This week, other activities on the Senior Campus include indigenous-focused lessons in Art, History, Religious Education and Geography, a staff and Prefect netball match to raise funds for an indigenous charity, and a raising of the flag ceremony by Ameer Sibosado and Tyler Cubby, two Aboriginal students who are boarding at the College. A number of students also participated in the Long Walk before the Dreamtime Game at the MCG last Saturday At Kostka Hall there will be an Aboriginal dance group visiting to work with the Early Years and the Years 5 and 6 classes. There will also be an Indigenous Artist in Residence, working through Art classes. Ameer and Tyler will visit Kostka Hall to share their experiences of Aboriginal life with the students. At Burke Hall there will be a Ride for Reconciliation to help raise funds for Wanalirri Catholic School in Gibb River in the Kimberley. Darren Side, a member of Xavier staff, is in his third year as Principal of this small school in remote Western Australia. Darren will be returning to Xavier College in 2014. There will also be an Assembly at Burke Hall with a focus on reconciliation. There will be a Welcome to Country ceremony, and Ameer and Tyler will once again share their experiences of Aboriginal life with the students. Throughout this week, we might pray and ponder these words in the first chapter of the Book of Genesis, “So God created humankind in His image, in the image of God He created them; male and female He created them. God blessed them” (Gen 1:27-28a). We pray to our God of hope that, as our country continues along its journey of healing people in their actions may acknowledge the human dignity of all peoples especially the first Australians. FRIDAY MASS IN THE BURKE HALL CHAPEL You are most welcome to attend Mass at 8:15am in the Burke Hall Chapel on Fridays.

Students, staff and parents of Burke Hall are most welcome to attend.

Dr Chris Hayes Principal [email protected]

FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents and Guardians Last week at the Rector’s Senior Campus Assembly, we welcomed Ms Lois Peeler, Principal of Worawa Aboriginal College in Healesville, and Aunty Zeta Thompson, a descendant of the Wurundjeri and Yorta-Yorta peoples from North-Eastern Victoria. Lois has turned her considerable talents to help shape the lives of young Aboriginal women by directing a very innovative boarding school. Her story was one of hope and reconciliation for the current and future Australians built on respect, dignity and understanding. As a parent of four children, I sometimes struggle with understanding the wonders and dangers of social media. I highly recommend the Social Media Information Evening to be held at the Senior Campus on Thursday 6 June in the Eldon Hogan Performing Arts Centre. Two of Victoria’s most informed investigators of cybercrime, Rod Mills and Julia Robson, will present the realities of what is happening online and how we, as parents, can help direct our children’s activities so that they will remain informed and safe. In a world of smart phones and portable devices, the landscape of watching what is happening on the home PC has shifted. This enlightening evening is being initiated and hosted by the Xavier College Fathers’ Association. They are charging an entry fee of $20 per family and the proceeds return to the College via a donation to the well-being programs that are organised by our School Counsellors. Please consider being well informed on current online trends and book on http://www.trybooking.com/48849. Blessings and peace for the coming week.

PRAYER FOR THE JOURNEY OF HEALING

Almighty and loving God, You who created ALL people in Your image, lead us to seek Your compassion as we listen to the stories of our past. You gave Your only Son, Jesus, who died and rose again so that sins will be forgiven. We place before You the pain and anguish of dispossession of land, language, lore, culture and family kinship that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have experienced. We live in faith that all people will rise from the depths of despair and hopelessness. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families have endured the pain and loss of loved ones, through the separation of children from their families. We are sorry and ask Your forgiveness. Touch the hearts of the broken, homeless and afflicted and heal their spirits. In Your mercy and compassion walk with us as we continue our journey of healing to create a future that is just and equitable. Lord, You are our hope. Amen.

Peter Cooper Director of Burke Hall [email protected]

We’re too busy it seems to take time for dreams or to go for a walk in the sun. Too busy today, no time for play, too busy just getting things done. Too busy to sit and read awhile, too busy for stories, too busy to smile. No time for old friends, no time for the new. Too busy thinking of things we must do. Too busy to watch the birds in flight, too busy to count the stars in the night, too busy to watch the children playing, we don`t hear half the things they’re saying.

We’re too busy for picnics when the weather is mild or to share in the joys of a little child. Too busy for all the simple things, no time for the blessings each day can bring. When our life is finally through and there’s worthwhile left to do. Will our hearts be filled with misgivings when we learn we’ve been too busy for living?

Dear Parents and Guardians, At times, we all need to give consideration and take stock of how our life is proceeding. The following poem, Too Busy, might allow us a moment to reflect:

The more we expect of life the busier it becomes and the more complicated and demanding it gets. Inevitably, this leads to less time we have available to appreciate the many blessings we have in life. There is a danger that family life can be affected, for at the end of a busy day each family member is both tired and overstimulated; each person is seeking love in the family as well as healing and emotional nourishment. All too often weariness, frustration and irritation boil to the surface and family conversation can become bitter and sharp, instead of gentle and kind. It is an example of not being able to give what we do not have, even when it is our loved ones who are in need of our giving. Our ‘wants’ and ‘desires’ can cause our life to rush past us. In truth, we all need to spend time on ourselves to nurture our physical and spiritual welfare, so that, “…Our hearts will not be filled with misgivings, and we’ve not been too busy for living.” Peace and best wishes,

FROM THE DEAN OF OPERATIONS CONT Winter Sports Uniform With the change in sport to winter games, students must be aware of the uniform requirements for their sports. In particular, the correct shorts, socks and tracksuit pants must be worn. The correct uniform requirements are found in the Student Diary. Once again all articles of the sports uniform must be clearly named. Absentees A reminder to all parents of the importance of advising the school if a student is absent on any particular day. Please contact the school office Middle Years: 9855 5434 and Early Years: 9855 4188 prior to 9:00am to confirm your child’s absence. A written confirmation of your child’s absence is also required upon their return to school (addressed to their respective homeroom teacher/s). Your assistance with this matter is greatly appreciated. Lost Property Lost Property is building again, mainly with un-named items. A reminder about the need for all items of a student’s uniform to be clearly named. Jumpers and blazers (winter uniform, Term Two) will need special attention. Technology in the classroom At the start of the year, Burke Hall and Kostka Hall introduced iPads to the Year 5 cohort and MacBook Airs to the Year 7s. While this has been a prodigious learning curve for both students and teachers, one only needs to speak to the students to find out how effective this has been. Research shows that there are many advantages of using technology as a teaching and learning tool in the classroom. It is interesting to read the research on technology integration that emphasises that students will perform better, teachers’ satisfaction and instruction will improve and our students will be competitive in a global workforce. The Melbourne Declaration on Educational Goals for Young Australians has a number of goals. One of these goals is for all students to have the essential skills in literacy and numeracy and be creative and productive users of technology, especially ICT, as a foundation for success in all learning areas. We believe we are preparing our students to be global citizens with the necessary skills for the future. Communication A solid partnership between teachers and parents is a vital part of education. Similarly, communication is as important. If you wish to communicate with your son‘s homeroom teacher, you can do so in any of the following ways: a note in the diary an email a phone call.

The Importance on Sportsmanship Sport plays a vital role in the overall development of our students. It teaches them many things. It teaches them how to win proudly and how to lose graciously. I’m sure many of you have come across the signboard at Burke Hall and the senior campus, which says: “Welcome to Xavier College where sportsmanship is an expectation. To achieve this goal: Let players play, Let coaches coach, Let officials officiate and Let spectators be positive.” It is excellent to see so many members of our community supporting this expectation. From the LOTE Department It is an exciting time for language learning at Burke Hall at the moment. The Year 7 and 8 French students are diligently learning their poems for the Alliance Française Poetry Competition. The French examiners will be visiting on Thursday 6 June. Language Club has been operating every second Friday, with Years 5-8 students enjoying language games, activities, films…all led by our capable and enthusiastic LOTE Captains! And of course, LOTE Week is coming! From 11-14 June, the Middle School will come alive with languages! Excursions, guest performers and musicians, films, games, activities, crêpes, gelato and much more! Watch out for further details on the Languages noticeboards! Trish Tassoni LOTE Coordinator

FROM THE DEAN OF MIDDLE YEARS CONT

From the English Deparment If you were visiting Burke Hall last Thursday 23 May you would have seen many very important people. The Night of the Notables, a Year 7 English exhibition, allowed students to show off the wonderful work completed over the term. They dressed up as their studied Notable, made a brief presentation and showcased their Notable from behind their learning centre. Congratulations to the boys, families and teachers for all their effort making this night such a success. Student Reflection on Night of the Notables On the 23 May half of the Year 7’s had the Night of the Notables. We had about six weeks to prepare for this big event and on the night we displayed what we had done to family members, friends and other students. We displayed a learning centre with things such as a model, timeline, twenty questions and lots of other things, which represented our notable character. On the night we started with a Who Am I? oral presentation which everyone enjoyed even though some boys were daunted by the fact that we had to speak in front of so many people. Following this, we all moved into the Garnet Hall and were presented with an audience of eager onlookers. We then got to the best part of the night. This included the students showing off their learning centres by standing at them while the crowd walked around excitedly looking at all the hard work the students had done. Everyone who attended the night were fantastic because they asked the boys lots of questions and discovered many facts about these notable people. They also enjoyed all the food and lollies that were on offer! Overall, I think I can speak for everyone in Year 7 when I say that I thoroughly enjoyed the night and that all the hard work, organisation and preparation was well worth it. House Captain’s Address - Loyola House Assembly

“He was no ‘straight A’ student, and his classmates teased him. Rather than read, this child preferred running around with a 8mm camera, shooting homemade movies of wrecks of his Lionel train set.

In his sophomore year of high school, he dropped out. But when his parents persuaded him to return, he was mistakenly placed in a learning-disabled class. He lasted one month. Only when the family moved to another town did he land in a more suitable high school, where he eventually graduated.

After being denied entrance into a traditional filmmaking school, the child enrolled in English at California State College at Long Beach. Then in 1965 his life took a complete turn. Visiting Universal Studios, he met Chuck Silvers, an executive in the editorial department. Silvers liked the kid who made 8mm films and invited him back sometime to visit.

Ten years later, the 28-year-old Steven Spielberg directed Jaws, which took in $470 million, then the highest-grossing movie of all time. Dozens of films and awards have followed because Steven Spielberg saw his opportunity and took it. Spielberg strived to achieve his dream.”

Good afternoon Mr Cooper, Dr Hayes, teachers and fellow students. My name is Petros Ketsakidis, and I am the 2013 Loyola House Captain. The piece I’ve just read from ReadersDigest.com shows us how one of the greatest directors of all time, a man who has made classic films such as Jaws, Jurassic Park, Schindler’s List and Saving Private Ryan, was bullied at school. Spielberg was teased by the older kids for taking his passion to an apparent ‘kid friendly’ school. Nothing though would deter Spielberg from the path he had envisioned for himself from the earliest of his memories. Kanye West, before achieving the celebrity status that he enjoys today, was just a common man who had a dream. Kanye’s dream was to be a Grammy award winning artist. After three years as a complementary artist, Kanye West had his big break, collaborating with Jay-Z in the critically acclaimed album, The Blueprint. The sky was the limit for Kanye, until what seemed like a normal October night in 2002. Kanye West was involved in a near fatal car accident, fracturing his jaw in the process. It was later revealed that Kanye would have to wire his jaw shut for the next six months, unable to eat any solid food for half a year. This didn’t stop him from releasing his first solo single, Through the Wire, in which he sang, through his wired-up mouth. Two years later and anyone who didn’t know the name Kanye West had been living under a rock. Kanye didn’t let the setbacks in his life get in the way of his dream, becoming one of the greatest rappers of all time. He went out and got it, on his own. Both Spielberg and West set out to fulfil their childhood dreams, but it’s never too late to pursue a dream, and that was the case for St Ignatius of Loyola. His dreams of women, money, wine and war all left him when he was struck by a cannon ball in the leg. Bedridden for months, Ignatius grew terribly bored. When he asked for a romance novel to read, he was left disappointed, as there were none. What the Castle of Loyola did have, though, was a book on the life of Jesus. At the age of 30, Ignatius stopped dreaming about saving maidens and started dreaming about a life serving God, and serve God is what he did. Going on to create the Society of Jesus, Ignatius created a group of men who served God under his name. Some of these Jesuits were St. Francis Xavier, Pope Francis, our current Pope and every House saint was a Jesuit who served the dream St Ignatius of Loyola had envisioned. I pray to you all never to think that what you dream about is implausible, unachievable, or impossible. Always go out and chase your dreams as hard as you can. It won’t happen straight away, but if you persist and put the time in, you will achieve your dream. Petros Ketsakidis (Year 8) Loyola House Captain
