Dear participants, In order to put together an event that lives up to the past conferences and the “Teaching Outside the Box” theme, APIRS has prepared some truly special presentations and, with the help of its sponsors, is bringing some really outstanding guest speakers. APIRS’ conferences have always been known for introducing global trends in our local English-teaching scene. In other words, the convention allows teachers in our state to get to know about terms and practices from the international teaching world that are still unfamiliar to them. Such as CALL (Computer-assisted language learning) in the past, and MULL now. Don’t you know what MULL stands for or is all about? Well, then come to the opening plenary session, titled “Something to MULL over: mapping the urban linguistic landscape”, and find out. Damian Williams and Stephen Greene will be our keynote speakers. Another great reason to attend the convention is to see some of your favorite authors live! This year, we have managed to bring someone who is just as admired for her great work: Jane Revell, the superstar author of innovative books such as “In Your Hands” and “Handing Over”. The topic of her talk? “Wake up your inner elephant”. What does she mean by that? Well, come and see. Jane has thought outside the box since the early 70’s, so trust her. By now, you have probably guessed that when we say “Teach outside the box” we really mean it. It was for no other reason that we also thought that Giselle Santos, a Google Certified Teacher and Academic Coordinator at Cultura Inglesa would be a great addition to this year’s event. She is going to talk about Making and Tinkering, digital fabrication, the 3.0 Maker Culture, DIY and DIT activities, Disruptive

Innovation and other concepts you have probably never heard of before (but now have a chance to). “Hasn’t That Book Already Been Written?” is another great session you can’t miss. In this plenary session, Dorothy Zemach is talking about the evolution of ELT in a “humorous interactive session with a serious point” as she points out. Besides this amazing team of keynote and guest speakers, which also include Bjarne Z. A. Vonsild and Daniela Meyer, there are papers, workshops, round tables, coffee breaks to meet local friends and friends from afar, and of course raffles to test your luck. But lucky you will be if you take advantage of all the convention has to offer… especially if you leave it with a feeling that your horizons have expanded, your knowledge has been extended, and your thoughts no longer fit in the same box. We assure you this convention will be surprising to each one of you. On behalf of our Board of Directors,

Michele Schwertner President

Sessions

July 16th - Thursday 09.00-10.00 Plenary Session with Keynote Speakers “Something to MULL over: mapping the urban linguistic landscape” by Damian Williams & Stephen Greene Abstract This talk will report on the Map of the Urban Linguistic Landscape (MULL), an online collaborative project, open to all, which aims to map the global urban linguistic landscape. The aim of this group is to invite English teachers from round the world to share photographs of interesting language use in the urban environment. The best photos are then uploaded to our dedicated Flickr page, geotagged and categorised. This process has allowed us not only to begin to map the international urban linguistic landscape, but also to observe patterns emerge, with some striking similarities across cultures. After a brief overview of the background and findings of the research so far, we will share some practical ideas on how to use the map as a teaching resource. Biodatas Damian Williams is an author, writer and teacher trainer from London, but based in Rio de Janeiro. He has worked in Russia, Indonesia, Italy, Spain, UK and Brazil. He has written books for several major publishers and works as an online Delta tutor. His current interests lie in critical thinking in teacher development, and exploiting the urban linguistic landscape as a language learning resource. Stephen Greene has been a language teacher, teacher trainer and materials developer for 20 years with experience of teaching in Poland, Taiwan, London, Russia and Brazil. 17

he came from Birmingham in the UK. He holds an MA in Linguistics, as well as a Diploma in Teaching to Speakers of Other Languages from Trinity College, London. She is also the president of APIRS. 12.00-12:45 Demonstrations & Papers - Round 1 Room 1 Paper - Building Learners’ Autonomy Abstract Like parents, our goal as teachers should be to do our jobs so that, at some point, we are no longer needed. And this ideal can only be achieved if we are able to build our students’ autonomy as learners.. However, learner autonomy is a two-way street. The teacher’s role is to show the students ways in which they can expand the classroom boundaries and take advantage of the countless tools for language development, but this will only be effective if the students explicitly accept responsibility for their learning. Over the last 30 years, I’ve tried to develop strategies to encourage my students to accept my invitation

19

to go through the door of learning autonomy. The objective of this paper is to share some of these strategies with the attendees. Biodata Vivian Magalhães has been an English teacher for over 30 years and a teacher trainer since 1998. She has a teaching degree from UFRGS and a Master’s degree in Education from PUCRS. She’s also the webmaster of an educational website (www.linguaestrangeira.com.br) and the author of books and articles on methodology. Room 2 Demonstration - Learning English through videogames by Fidel Helfer Abstract This demonstration aims to present the impacts of using videogames as a tool for learning English inside and outside the classroom. The speaker will give a brief talk about the history of videogames; he will show some examples of games, which are classified into three categories: epistemic, commercial and educational. And he will also discuss the advantages or disadvantages of using this type of platform for educational purposes. Biodata Fidel Helfer is an undergraduate student of Modern Languages at UNISC. He works as a pedagogical assistant and an English teacher at Centro de Línguas e Culturas with teenagers and young learners. He also participates in a program called PIBID from CAPES since 2011 working with English at public schools in Santa Cruz do Sul. Room 3 Paper - Foreign Language Drama Classes - Shakespeare the Easy Way by Janice Chemale Barth

Laureada com o Prêmio Pena Libertária como Profissional do Ano em 2012. 13.45-14.45 Plenary Session with Guest Speaker “Wake up your inner elephant!” by Jane Revell (Helbling Languages) Abstract Memory is a vital part of learning, and that includes learning a language. We sometimes forget just how powerful our brain is and we often have limiting beliefs about our ability to remember things, especially as we

21

get older. But essentially, it’s a question of practice. Our memory is like a muscle: the more we exercise it, the better it works. Use it or lose it! This session will look at some ways to help us remember, and suggest some simple practice activities for - and beyond - the classroom. Biodata Jane has been involved in English language teaching for more than forty years. She has taught in classrooms in Rwanda, Spain, Germany, Venezuela and France and has trained teachers all over the world, from Mexico to Moscow and Malaysia. She has written and co-written many ELT books, for primary, secondary and adult learners, including several prize-winning titles, as well as children’s stories and BBC radio and video material. She is also a certified international NLP trainer and a qualified Pilates instructor. She speaks fluent French and Spanish. 14.45-15.00 Commercial Presentation “Nine Principles of Good Teaching” by Jane Revell (Helbling Languages) Abstract What is good teaching? What approach, methodology or principles should we use when we teach our students a foreign language? This session will run through a series of good and solid principles of foreign language teaching that can be seen implemented in the brand new general English series for young adults/adults “Jetstream” published by Helbling Languages. Biodata Jane has been involved in English language teaching for more than forty years. She has taught in classrooms in Rwanda, Spain, Germany, Venezuela and France and has trained teachers all over the world, from Mexico to Moscow and Malaysia. She has written and co-written many ELT books, for primary, secondary and adult learners, including several

22

prize-winning titles, as well as children’s stories and BBC radio and video material. She is also a certified international NLP trainer and a qualified Pilates instructor. She speaks fluent French and Spanish. 15.00-16.00 Plenary Session with Guest Speaker “Differentiated Learning” by Bjarne Z A Vonsild (Cengage Learning Brasil) Abstract Learners are different in terms of backgrounds, interests, abilities in English etc., it does not make same that we expect them to go away with the same learning outcomes, the same way that they may not all have to be doing the exact same thing at the same time in class. I would clarify the theory and give practical ideas to achieve this. Biodata Apart from being a teacher trainer, he is a co-owner of Target Language Services, a CELTA and FTBE teacher trainer, an E-Moderator, an assessor of CELTA courses, and he has been working as a Cambridge Examiner for 15 years. He has been teaching English and training teachers in countries such as South Korea, Egypt, Estonia, Italy, Spain, the UK and Brazil for over 20 years. He holds RSA/DELTA and he has developed EFL material for a variety of language teaching situations like an in-house course-book for “zero beginners” in Egypt, exam preparation material and he has co-written a legal English vocabulary book, which was published by DISAL Editora Brasil. His particular teaching interests are exam preparation, E-Learning, vocabulary development and coherence and cohesion in writing. 16.00-16.15 Commercial Presentation - Cengage Learning Brasil

23

16.15-16:30 Commercial Presentation - Saco de Brinquedo 17.00-18.30 Literature Forum & Workshops - Round 1 Room 1 Literature Forum Coordinators: Claudio Vescia Zanini (Unisinos) & Valter Henrique De Castro Fritsch (FURG) Room 2 Workshop - Creating Oral Assessment Tasks for EAL learners by Paula Ganzer and Guilherme Guerra Abstract This workshop focuses on the importance of Oral Assessment for all EAL learners. It consists of two parts. First, we will discuss the nature of oral assessments; their advantages (and some disadvantages); key dimensions to use in planning, grading and evaluating oral assessments; preparing students for oral performance and the steps to ensure that the assessment is reliable and fair to the students' previous exposure to the language. This first part will be based on real Oral Tasks assessed by the Speakers. Secondly, there will be a hands-on moment for the participants to create their own Oral Assessment tasks. Biodatas Paula Ganzer has been teaching English as an Additional Language for almost thirteen years, and has been working at CNA Bom Fim since 2014. Being concerned with the many aspects of the evaluation process, she has always been interested in improving the ways with which teachers reflect upon their own practice. She holds a CPE and she is currently studying Languages at UFRGS.

24

Guilherme Guerra is an EAL teacher at CNA Bom Fim and Lindoia. He's also a Portuguese and English teacher at João Paulo High School and EJA UNI. Working with different aspects of the evaluation process, his main concern has always been a form of assessment, which shows students’ real ability with the language. He is currently studying Languages at UFRGS. Room 3 Workshop - Teaching Basic Levels - How much English to use? by Patrícia Arregui Zilio and Patrícia Cardona Garcia Abstract Teaching basic levels require a lot of sensitivity and sensibility in balancing the amount of English used in class as well as the students’ native language. While some argue that classes should be taught entirely in English, others defend a gradual increase of the amount of English and other people teach English in Portuguese. This workshop aims at showing that it is possible to teach basic students in English without forgetting to use their native language to our advantage. Biodatas Patrícia Arregui Zilio studies English at UFRGS and has been teaching English for more than twenty years, always making her students engage in projects that go beyond the curriculum. She is currently working as an English teacher at CNA Bom Fim and Lindóia, Porto Alegre. She currently works at CNA Bom Fim, Porto Alegre. 18.30-19.15

Demonstrations & Papers - Round 2 Room 1 Demonstration - Drama clubs - the use of games and genres in additional language teaching/learning by Cristiane Bocchi Abstract Using theater in my additional language classes (Schlatter, 2009) has helped my students overcome the fear of using the language just by having fun and feeling comfortable in the classroom. It has also helped me as a teacher in so many ways. Therefore, I have decided to organize a drama club where we use games and theater techniques. I defend the idea of using genre to explain help develop reading and produce speaking. I support this study in the view of discourse genre of Bakhtin and in the use of theatre games in the classroom suggested by Viola Spolin and others. Biodata Bachelor of Business Administration - PUCRS (2007); Post-graduate in English - PUCRS (2009); TYL (Teaching Young Learners Certificate) ILSC - Vancouver - Canada, 2010; CELTA (Cambridge Certificate of English Language Teaching to Adults) British Study Centre Oxford - England, 2011; BA Theatre (Licentiate - in course - 2014 on). Possui também experiência como professora de inglês em escola de educação infantil, colégios, cursos de idiomas e business. Room 3 Paper - The effects of two different types of corrective feedback on EFL students' writing by Ricardo da Rosa Kirinus Abstract Anyone who begins studying a new language is subject to making mistakes. The way they are treated by teachers, however, should enable learners perceive gaps between their interlanguage and the target language, reflect on their own production and thus can rephrase it. In this way, this work aims to present the results of a research that verified that the corrective feedback produces different results when offered at different times, as well as the dialogued correction and textual rewriting bring to the learner a better result in building their writing skills and, consequently, their knowledge. Biodata Ricardo has a BA in Portuguese (2005) and in English (2009) and a Specialization Degree in Teaching English as a Foreign Language at Universidade de Passo Fundo - UPF (2008) and in English Translation at Universidade Estácio de Sá (2015); has taught English in elementary schools, high schools and technical schools (IFSUL) as well as in several private language schools; has been the head teacher of Idiomas Escola de Línguas (Carazinho-RS), where is a partner, since its foundation in

This humorous interactive session (with a serious point) investigates the evolution of ELT textbooks. When those books were written, people believed they were useful; we laugh now because something we believe about teaching and learning languages has changed. Participants are guided to articulate their beliefs about teaching and learning, and then to apply those insights to the materials they select or create. Biodata Dorothy Zemach taught ESL for over 18 years, in Asia, Africa, and the US. She holds an MA in TESL from the School for International Training in Vermont, USA. Now she concentrates on writing, editing, and publishing ELT materials and textbooks and conducting teacher training workshops. A frequent plenary speaker at international conferences, her areas of specialty and interest are teaching writing, teaching reading, business English, academic English, curriculum design, testing, and humor. Books written for Macmillan include Writing Sentences, Writing Paragraphs, Writing Essays, and Writing Research Papers; Get Ready for International Business 1 and 2; and OpenMind Essentials and MasterMind level 2. Additionally, she is the series consultant on the five-level, Elton-nominated series Skillful. 14.45-15.00 Commercial Presentation - Macmillan 15.00-15.15 Commercial Presentation - WMF Idiomas 15.15-15.30 Commercial Presentation - World Study 16.00-17.30 Fórum Escolas Públicas & Workshops - Round 2

Room 1 Workshop - Teaching Process Writing by Dorothy Zemach (Macmillan) Abstract Do your students regard “process writing” as a remedial technique designed for struggling writers or low-level language students? Are you using the writing process to help your students write the best papers they can with the least amount of stress? This workshop takes participants through all stages of the writing process: brainstorming, organizing, drafting, editing, and rewriting, to demonstrate its usefulness and efficiency for any level of young adult or adult writer (including native speaker!). We’ll try out a variety of practical and enjoyable classroom activities for each stage. Participants will look at activities that teach students to brainstorm creatively, make outlining easier for visually oriented learners, and set up a peer reviewing process that actually works.
