Y7 CATCH UP FUNDING 2016-17

Context

The Department for Education (DfE) provided additional funding for all students in

Year 7 from 2012 onwards, who achieved below their age related expectations at

the end of KS2. This additional funding is to be used by schools/academies to

provide literacy and numeracy catch-up support for Year 7 students. It is designed

to help students catch up as quickly as possible. Pre-2016, the literacy and

numeracy catch-up premium provided schools with an additional £500 for each

year 7 pupil who did not achieve at least level 4 in reading and/or maths at the end

of key stage 2. Due to the changes in KS2 data and the introduction of scaled scores

for 2016/17, schools will receive the same amount of Year 7 catch-up premium

funding they received in 2015/16, adjusted to reflect the percentage change in the

size of their Year 7 cohort.

Our Aims

At Clifton School the funding is being used to meet the following aims:

1. To raise attainment in reading age.

2. To raise attainment in reading and writing.

3. To raise attainment in Maths

How is the funding deployed?

Read, Write, Inc.

In Y7, students who have a reading age of below 7 years receive 2 lessons and 2 1:1

Read, Write, Inc sessions per week. All TAs and English teachers received 2 days of

Read, Write, Inc training in October to ensure a consistent approach to the delivery

of this across the school. Along side this, these students complete DEAR reading time

in every English lesson (10 mins) and have a Y10 reading buddy who also reads with

them 1 session per week.

Language Acquisition

For EAL students whose reading age is better than 7 years and who we feel their

grasp of the English Language is their biggest barrier to accessing the curriculum

receive 2 lessons of English as an Additional Language teaching per week. This is

delivered by staff from the MFL faculty. We run a 5 year programme which can

progress all the way to a GCSE qualification in Y11. Along side this, these students

complete DEAR reading time in every English lesson (10 mins) and have a Y10

reading buddy who also reads with them 1 session per week.

Step Up

Students who are below a 2- (4c) in English receive 2 lessons of Step Up per week (or

1 lesson if they also require Numeracy intervention). Step up is a programme run by

AQA, which provides students with the foundation skills in reading, writing, speaking

and listening to successfully access the school curriculum and provide the key

components to succeed at GCSE level. Again, this course can be followed all the

way through to Y11, resulting in a qualification. This is delivered by staff from the

English faculty. Along side this, these students complete DEAR reading time in every

English lesson (10 mins) and have a member of staff who is their reading buddy, who

reads with them twice a week to get their reading age to chronological.

Personalised Learning

Students who still require additional personalised learning to develop their spelling,

reading or numeracy further access personalised learning as a short term

intervention to improve a specific element of literacy or numeracy.

Number of Students Cost

36 £15,702.00

Numeracy

Students who are below a 2- (4c) in Maths receive 2 lessons of Numeracy per week

(1 if they also require step up). The numeracy is designed to work on the basics of

Maths to ensure there is a solid grounding on which to build upon in lessons. We

have also invested in a Maths specific TA to support students in class and where

appropriate work with small groups outside of the classroom environment.
