INTRODUCTIONYear 10 is an important year in your daughter’s School journey and we work to keep you informed about her program. This Handbook contains useful reference information about Year 10, which is the foundation year for VCE.

COMMUNICATIONCommunication between parents and the School is very important. Your daughter will be supported by many people in her journey at Firbank but in particular by the Year Level Wellbeing Leader, Ms Bree Gardner-Vaughan, her Mentor and her Subject Teachers.

The main contact for enquiries regarding your daughter on a day to day basis is her Mentor. Communication regarding her progress, wellbeing concerns and requests for leave should be directed to the Wellbeing Leader, Ms Bree Gardner-Vaughan, [email protected] or on 9591 5188.

A list of your daughter’s teachers and their email addresses can be found on the Parent Portal. Firbank email addresses follow the same format for example [email protected]. We encourage parents to communicate frequently with teachers.

Other methods of communication that we use are the Firbank weekly eNews, the Firbank App and parent emails. We encourage all parents to download the Firbank App. Information about downloading the Firbank App can be found on our website under Current Students and Parents, What Parents Need to Know or under App in the General Information in this handbook. NB. You will be logged out of the App if you do not access it within 30 days. This is a security measure you will need to log in again.

Help DeskThe Firbank Parent Help Desk is the first point of call for any general parent enquiries - whatever you need help with, across all our campuses. The Parent Help Desk is designed to assist with requests and solve problems, be they big or small.

The Help Desk can be contacted on 9591 5188, via email [email protected] or alternatively you can contact the Parent Help Desk via reception 9591 5188.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS

HORIZONSTerm 4 - Outdoor EducationBetween Tuesday, 24 November - Friday, 4 December

Term 4 - Community Service trips will occurBetween Saturday, 23 November -Wednesday, 4 December. Exact dates will be released during Term 1.

Two blocks of time are allocated for the Horizons Program. Each Year 10 student is required to participate in both blocks. Each student must complete one Outdoor Education option and one Community Service option throughout the course of the year. The Horizons Program is an integral and compulsory component of the Year 10 Program and each program must be completed in its entirety.

HORIZONS: OUTDOOR EDUCATION OPTIONSThe program offers the students a range of opportunities that will allow them to build and expand on their previous experiences in the outdoors. We will offer new activities and venues whereby students will be able to apply and expand their skills and knowledge. It will also encourage them to pursue individual interests and broaden their outlook. Each program has been carefully designed to offer different challenges and experiences which will provide valuable opportunities for personal growth and extend students’ understanding of themselves and their social and physical environments.

Page 7: YEAR 10 HANDBOOK 2020 · 2020. 3. 4. · YEAR 10 HANDBOOK 2020 3 CRICOS Proer No 00140K INTRODUCTION Year 10 is an important year in your daughter’s School journey and we work to

Program options include an off track hiking expedition in Kakadu, Whitewater Kayaking in North East Queensland, a Horse Riding program on the Sunshine Coast, Surfing at an AIS accredited facility on the Gold Coast, Sea Kayaking in the Whitsundays and a Central Australia camping and cultural adventure. This program will satisfy the Adventurous Journey component of the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

HORIZONS: COMMUNITY SERVICE OPTIONSThe Community Service options offer students the opportunity to work with various community projects locally and internationally thereby expanding their understanding of the value of service. The global exposure allows Firbank students to develop the ‘soft skills’ that are increasingly being sought after in the competitive job market.

This program will satisfy the Adventurous Journey and Service component of the Duke of Edinburgh Award for those participating in this International Award.

DUKE OF EDINBURGHThe Duke of Edinburgh International Award is an internationally recognised program. There are three levels of Awards: Bronze, Silver and Gold, each level requiring an increased level of commitment and time. Students completed the Bronze level as part of the Year 9 curriculum. Silver and Gold level are optional from Year 10 -12. For each level, the participant must meet

the challenges in four sections: Service, Physical Recreation, Skills and Adventurous Journey. The Award is a student-led initiative and the girls are expected to take ownership of their Award and lead the process. The Horizons Program satisfy the Adventurous Journey Section.

FIRBANK /BRIGHTON GRAMMAR DANCING CLASSDancing class has been a very popular extra-curricular activity and a wonderful opportunity for Firbank students to interact with the students of Brighton Grammar in a social environment. These classes are not compulsory and require commitment of four Friday nights after school from 4.00 – 6.00 p.m.

An additional cost is associated with participation in the dance classes which is paid at the Book Room prior to the dance lessons. See the School Calendar and/or the Important Dates for the dates of these classes during terms three and four.

ExaminationsTerm 2Friday, 29 May - Thursday, 4 June

Term 4Monday, 9 - Friday, 13 November

Attendance during ExaminationsIf a student misses an examination due to illness, or has the Principal’s or Deputy Principal’s permission to be absent, then if possible, the examination may be rescheduled. This will be arranged through the Year Level Wellbeing Leader.

PLEASE NOTE, Students who do not have a valid reason for missing an examination will receive a zero result.

Policy for applying to select a Unit 3/4 subject in Year 11All students are expected and encouraged to work consistently to the best of their ability. Consistent effort in all areas of endeavor are crucial to success in the VCE.

Year 10 is the foundation year for the VCE and students must use their time in Year 10 to develop the skills and subject knowledge needed for the VCE years. The VCE is designed as a sequential program of study in Units 1 - 4. To ensure that all students have a successful VCE experience, it is important that a strong foundation for future study is established in Years 10 and 11.

Students will not automatically be allowed to select a Unit 3/4 to study in Year 11. Unit 3/4 subjects are very demanding and

require a large commitment of time. The effort required may prove detrimental to a student’s Year 11 program so the decision of whether or not to study a Unit 3/4 subject in Year 11 is an important one. Students wishing to study a Unit 3/4 subject in Year 11 will need to apply to the Director of Curriculum and the Wellbeing Leader. Students need to have demonstrated through their Year 10 studies that they can cope with the very demanding requirements of a Year 12 subject. Criteria required to attempt a Unit 3/4 subject in Year 11A Grade Point Average (GPA) for each subject will be included on the Year 10 end of semester transcript report. The Grade Point Average is an Internationally recognised calculation which is used to find the average results of all assessments for a course. The GPA will be given as a mark out of 10.

Under normal circumstances, students will be invited to include a Unit 3/4 subject in their program when they move into Year 11 based on the following criteria:• A Grade Point Average of 7.0 in

English• A Grade Point Average of 7.5 across all

core subjects• A recommendation from the relevant

Head of Department• Consultation with the Wellbeing

Leader, VCE Co-Ordinator and Director of Curriculum.

Page 11: YEAR 10 HANDBOOK 2020 · 2020. 3. 4. · YEAR 10 HANDBOOK 2020 3 CRICOS Proer No 00140K INTRODUCTION Year 10 is an important year in your daughter’s School journey and we work to

YEAR 10 HANDBOOK 2020 11

CRIC

OS Provider N

o 00140K

Please note the following:• A GPA of 7.5 equates to an average

assessment of ‘Above Standard’.• Subjects for Year 11 will be selected

in Term 3 so Semester 1 results will be used for the Grade Point Average. Please note: Applicable Semester 2 results may also be taken into consideration

• Chinese First Language students will be able to study Chinese FL 3/4 in Year 11

• Variations to this policy can be made if a student shows exceptional aptitude in a particular discipline

Occasionally a student might request to complete two Unit 3/4 subjects. This is not to be taken lightly as this places a huge amount of effort to ensure that focus and commitment is spread across all unit 1/2 and 3/4 subjects. This choice can often lead to the detriment of unit 1/2 subjects. We advise that students wait one more year before commencing additional Unit 3/4. The extra year of maturity and exposure to one Unit 3/4 in the Year 11 program has proved to be the best support for our students.

If a student requests to study two Unit 3/4 units in Year 11 each case is looked at individually and they must meet the criteria above for Semester 1 and achieve GPA 9 (equates to Well Above standard) average in Year 10 for Semester 2.

Homework and the use of the Student DiaryHomework is an important aspect of your daughter’s learning. It bridges the gap between learning at school and learning at home and reinforces work done in class. Homework helps to establish the habits of study, concentration and self-discipline.

For Year 10 it is an expectation that students complete 12 hours of homework per week.

The Student Diary should be used to record homework set and the dates relating to any assignments.

It is an auditioned group who represent Firbank in dance competitions held throughout the year. Students from Years 7 - 11, who love to dance, can audition. Auditions are held at the beginning of Term 4 in preparation for the following year. Rehearsals occur every Wednesday morning and Thursday lunch time.

DEBATINGDebating is a skill that underpins our democratic society. We see politicians debating in parliament, we see people discussing and arguing in the media and we use our powers of persuasion at home and in the work place. The ability to argue and persuade is a serious skill that underpins our lives.

Debating offers profound and lasting benefits for individuals, for societies and for our global community. With its emphasis on critical thinking, effective communication, independent research and teamwork, debating teaches skills that enable students to thrive in school, in the

workplace and in political life. It also looks great on a resume.

The Debating Association of Victoria (DAV) gives Firbank students the opportunity to develop and participate in the world beyond the Firbank gates using the power of persuasion with confidence, poise and finesse. Debating is held throughout the academic year at various venues and times.

The DAV teams meet regularly before each debate with debates occurring on a Wednesday evening.

DRAMA CLUBThe Drama Club is run by the Drama Captain and Senior students. The club meets every Friday lunchtime to share ideas, common interests, socialise and have fun with Drama. This culminates in a performance which is either scripted or group-devised.

Year 10 and 11 students are most welcome to collaborate with the drama Captain in working with the students on Friday’s.

HOMEWORK CLUBFirbank provides a supervised Homework Club for students in Years 7 - 10.

Homework Club will operate from Monday to Thursday, 3.45 - 4.45 p.m.

Parents will receive an email from Firbank Grammar, with instructions, asking to provide current health information, emergency contacts, medical information including asthma and allergies and notes and care instructions which relate to the student.

No student is permitted to go on an excursion or camp unless C2G has been completed and permission has been given by a parent/guardian.

CERTIFICATE OF ACHIEVEMENTAt Firbank we value achievement. We are proud that we provide a well-balanced education for our students. The success of a Firbank education is measured by more than a strong ATAR score at the completion of Year 12.

While we celebrate the outstanding academic achievements of our graduating students, it is important to recognise that Firbank provides extensive opportunities to participate in a diverse co-curricular program, take on leadership roles and become involved in community service programs. We know that students benefit from being involved.

The Firbank Grammar Certificate of Achievement will recognise and reward a student’s involvement and achievement in the Senior School. The certificate will be awarded to students at the completion of Year 12.

There are a number of reasons for the introduction of the Firbank Grammar Certificate of Achievement.

It is becoming increasingly the case that universities and employers are requiring transcripts, which document the scope of a student’s involvement and achievement during their secondary school years. As they are looking for a well-rounded student, institutions overseas give extra credit to students for their participation and leadership in co-curricular activities. Our graduates will be able to use this certificate as a reference in these situations.

The Certificate will provide accurate information about the Firbank experience for each student. The holistic educational experience of each student will be documented and participation in the School’s academic and co-curricular programs will be recognised and rewarded.

The Certificate will reinforce the fact that we value a student’s involvement in a range of activities beyond the classroom. We recognise that this involvement is important for the development of a student.

Students will earn their Certificate through the accumulation of credits, which will be awarded for both academic and co-

curricular participation and achievement. The Certificate will have four levels of achievement: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum.

Cumulative reporting of a student’s progress and level of involvement will be provided at the end of each semester as part of the end-of-semester report.

Specific information about the points allocated to various activities is available on the portal.

FIREFLYThe main form of student communication is the Firefly App which is our Learning Management System. Here students will find their timetable, the Daily Bulletin and resources for classes. Teachers may send students messages about classwork and assignments by mail on Firefly. Students may want to submit work via Firefly.

GENERAL HEALTHDirector of Student Services/School Psychologist Counselling services are available to students with regard to mental health and issues such as: homesickness, grief, bullying, stress, anxiety and relationships.

responsibility of the student to ensure that they attend their lesson at the correct time.

GUIDELINES FOR USE OF MOBILE PHONESPurposeMobile phones are a useful communication tool. They offer access to information and can also be a valuable learning device. These guidelines intend to provide information for the use of mobile phones at Firbank Grammar Senior School by our students. The aim of the student guidelines is to promote classroom engagement and positive learning outcomes and encourage students to develop self-regulation.

Student Guidelines• Students are permitted to carry at their

own risk a mobile phone to school• The use of mobile phones to film or

photograph people and their activities without their knowledge and/or permission is an invasion of privacy and is strictly not permitted

• For students in Years 7-10: during the school day mobile phones are to be switched off and secured in student

lockers• For students in Years 11 and 12:

During class time mobile phones are to be switched off and secured in student lockers. Students can use mobile phones during recess and lunch breaks

Mobile Phones and The ClassroomThere may be occasions where mobile phones will be required in the classroom for educational purposes. This can be coordinated according to the classroom teacher’s requirements.

As a general rule however, the use of mobile phones during class time can limit engagement and disrupt learning. If a student is found to have brought their mobile phone to class then:On the first occasion, students will be reminded that this is a disruption to the learning environment and will be asked to place their mobile on the classroom teacher’s desk until the end of the lesson.

If there are subsequent occasions: Students will again be reminded that this disrupts the learning environment, the classroom teacher will record this on the Synergetic attendance list. Wellbeing leaders will be notified, and this information recorded.

If this behaviour persists:Student will be asked to meet with their Wellbeing Leader to discuss how the school can help them in their responsible choices to support teaching and learning in the classroom. Wellbeing Leaders will work with parents to support students.
