While a strength-focused pose long held often brings audible groaning in class. The thought of an oncoming balancing pose brings on a more expressive inaudible groan often laced with dread and a bit of fear. That’s because balancing poses are hard work that require rhythmic breath, focused attention, and constant meticulous bodily adjustments that bring on quick exhaustion. But there is a deeper meaning to that inward dread, and it is coming from the ego. None of the physical challenges yoga brings us can compare in the need to set the ego aside (which is after all, the ultimate goal of the ancient yogis). Even the experienced teeter precariously on one leg worrying that a crash is imminent. The sheer unpredictability of how a yogi’s body will respond on any give day, the sense that even if you find that perfect balance, that mysterious nudge or light breeze that floats mischievously throughout the room, can knock you out of it in any given second, makes balancing work, well... just frustrating, and yet it’s necessity, it’s value, remains. So the next time you feel yourself cringing as your yoga teacher announces Warrior III or Half Moon, just remember the rewards that the trials and challenges of balance work are bringing you. Here’s a few reasons to feel inspired about balancing. - Improves focus, concentration, and memory. - Grows the skills to remain calm in frustrating and stressful circumstance. - Relieves stress and reduces inner tension. - Builds muscle strength. - Brings overall balance to both body and mind. - Teaches humility. Tips for better balance. Breathe deeply. Short, shallow breath brings instability to the body making balance more difficult. Find that focal point and concentrate.
