dutch acts at north sea Jazz this year. this booklet

can help you find new surprising dutch bands and

artists, and you will find out the netherlands has

a lot to offer in the field of jazz. the booklet is

an initiative of buma cultuur, dutch Jazz day

and north sea Jazz festival.

buma cultuur is dedicated to music

and composers from the netherlands.

this is the fifth year in a row that it

has organized Jazz day. this day is

the kick-off of two weeks of jazz in

Rotterdam with north sea Round

town and north sea Jazz.

JAZZ DAYJazz day is the biggest dutch jazz network event,

where the entire jazz sector comes together in a

dynamic setting. Jazz day is, next to composers and

musicians, attended by representatives of national

and international clubs, venues and festivals, as

well as booking agencies, record labels, management

companies, media and delegations from several

NORTH SEA JAZZ FESTIvALat the world-famous north sea Jazz festival, the

audience can enjoy the past, present and future of

jazz every year for three days in Rotterdam. this year

more than a thousand musicians, spread out over

150 performances and thirteen different stages,

colin benders, also known as Kyteman, is one of the two “carte blanche”

artists this year. north sea Jazz allows “carte blanche” artists to be

present on all festival days. they will be doing different performances to

show off their versatility. today, Kyteman will bring the popular project

Kytecrash to north sea Jazz. it is a very special collaboration between eric

vloeimans, Holland’s greatest jazz trumpet player of this era, and colin

benders, the greatest pop/cross-over trumpeter. vloeimans used to be

colin’s teacher. but those days are over: both performers are well up to the

challenge and were able to make Kytecrash a successful project already.

Tineke Postma (alto sax, soprano sax); marc van Roon (piano);

Frans van der Hoeven (double bass); martijn vink (drums).

saxophonist tineke postma is one of the most notable export hits of

the dutch jazz scene. after graduating cum laude at the amsterdam

conservatory, a truly fabulous solo career soon followed. postma took

to heart the lessons she learned in new York (from david liebman and

chris potter, among others) and integrated them into her own recognizable

style. she has steadily built up an impressive oeuvre. postma’s fourth

cd the traveller (2009) was highly praised all over the world. the same

is true of her new album the dawn of light that came out earlier this year.

she recorded the new cd with her quartet. a guest role is reserved for

grammy award winner and friend esperanza spalding, who sings the song

leave me a place underground on the latest album.

for a long time, the low countries had to do without any line ups that

performed in the tradition of the american big band. that is, until pianist-

arranger Henk meutgeert, bassist frans van geest and drummer Hans

dekker founded the new concert big band in 1996! it was rechristened

Jazzorchestra of the concertgebouw after their collaboration with the

concertgebouw. since then, the orchestra hasn’t just conquered the

netherlands, but also every other continent, note by note. it has a global

reputation, with a repertoire varying from gershwin to ellington, and an

impressive collection of original pieces. the 2010 album blues for the

date, consists entirely of original compositions by the orchestra’s regular

pianist peter beets. peter beets and the Jazzorchestra received the edison

Jazz national for this album.

the big breakthrough for alain clark came with his 2007 album live it out.

the second single, father and friend - a duet with his own father dane -

stormed the charts. even renowned session drummer steve gadd played

on the record; not bad for what many considered to be clark’s real debut.

His second english-language album colorblind, from 2010, was recorded

in the galaxy studios in belgium. With it, the singer continued his victory

march: he is now considered one of the most popular and bestselling art-

ists in the netherlands. but it doesn’t end here. clark also signed an inter-

national deal and his music was released in the uK, switzerland, germany,

belgium and italy, among other countries.

each year, the north sea Jazz festival commissions a promising dutch jazz

composer to write a free composition. the project is a collaboration with

music center the netherlands (mcn) and the fund for the performing arts

(fonds podiumkunsten). this year, altsaxophonist and bass guitarist dirk

bruinsma gets to perform his new work at the festival together with his

band pumporgan.

bruinsma has a background in avantgardist rock and jazz and is influenced

by dance music, especially directed towards the energetic power of rhythm

and blues, rock ‘n’ roll and swing.

two top dutch bands on a single stage and sharing the limelight: that

can only happen at the north sea Jazz festival. bassist stefan lievestro

is a master of improvised music. With mona lisa overdrive, he has been

making “jazz rock of the future” as reviewers like to call it, since 2007.

With tenor saxophonist Jasper blom and organist arno Krijger among its

members, this group is able to set itself apart by playing adventurous and

challenging compositions within an explosive framework. fullduplexx

is the band of trombonist louk boudesteijn who is also the musical leader

and a co-founder of the Rotterdam Jazz orchestra. With fullduplexx,

boudesteijn has formed a band for which the musicians have been care-

fully selected. this results in the playing of their own compositions in which

electro, funk, rock and improvised jazz are interwoven in an ingenious

manner. anything goes, as the musicians themselves say.
