Grade 1 deslisle stu-dents benefit from stand-up desks, Justin sauer says

cbc.ca - A Grade 1 class at Deslisle Elementary School is filled with a group of stand-up students — literally.

The kids don’t sit in chairs. They do their school work at stand-up desks.

Their teacher, Justin Sauer, was researching standing as a way to rehabilitate his own injuries. That’s when he discovered that standing has health benefits for

kids, too.So he decided to give it a shot. Sauer converted his students’

desks into standing desks to see if it would improve their health and boost performance in class. So far, he’s seeing results.

“Three different families told me how their kids were sleeping better, going to bed easier and sleeping through the night bet-ter,” he said. “About half of the parents made a point of men-tioning how they were support-ive.”

The teacher in the community of Delisle, about 43 kilometres southwest of Saskatoon, said his students are more attentive and engaged in class.

The kids still have the chance to sit and move around throughout the day. However, they like stand-ing.

“Overwhelmingly, so far the kids are all for keeping them,” he said. “So, there are no signs of giving up so far.”

Sauer hopes other teachers will follow his example and make simple changes.

BY FRANCIS DRAKE

What kind of day will tomorrow be? To find out what the stars say, read the fore-cast given for your birth sign.

For Thursday, Feb. 12, 2015ARIES(March 21 to April 19)Avoid tackling controversial subjects

like politics, religion and racial issueswith others today, because these discus-sions will discourage you. There’s a lotof negative thinking going on right now.

TAURUS(April 20 to May 20)Stay in touch with your bank account

so that you have a good idea of what youhave and do not have. Don’t be discour-aged by the facts. The first step is toknow what your situation really is.

GEMINI(May 21 to June 20)Discussions with partners and close

friends might discourage you today. However, don’t let others get you down. This is just a temporary viewpoint —nothing permanent.

CANCER(June 21 to July 22)Someone older or in a position of

authority might be critical of your worktoday. (This will go over like a lead bal-loon.) Try not to let this get you down.

LEO(July 23 to Aug. 22)Children might feel like an increased

responsibility today, which, let’s face it,goes with the territory. Some days areeasier than others.

VIRGO(Aug. 23 to Sept. 22)Family relationships might be strained

today because someone in authority isunhappy with what’s happening. Don’tworry. Nobody can please everyone allof the time.

LIBRA(Sept. 23 to Oct. 22)It’s easy to fall into negative thinking

today. What’s important to know is thatthings actually look worse than they are.

© 2015 King Features Syndicate, Inc.

Lighten up.SCORPIO(Oct. 23 to Nov. 21)Michael Todd once said, “I’ve been

broke many times, but I’ve never beenpoor.” Sometimes this is a state of mind, isn’t it?

SAGITTARIUS(Nov. 22 to Dec. 21)Today is an opportunity to work hard

because duty and orderliness will appealto you. Ignore people who are stingy orcritical. Who needs this?

CAPRICORN(Dec. 22 to Jan. 19)Today you might feel lonely or cut off

from others. Therefore, it’s important toknow that many people feel this waytoday. So in a way, you are not alone.(Ha!)

AQUARIUS(Jan. 20 to Feb. 18)Someone older or in a position of

authority might rain on your paradetoday. Don’t let this happen. No matterwhat other people say, you are your ownperson.

PISCES(Feb. 19 to March 20)This is a poor day to ask for permis-

sion or approval from authority figures.Their answer will be, “Talk to the hand.”(Bummer.)

YOU BORN TODAY There are manysides to your personality. You are quickto see the big picture and skilled atbringing together groups with opposingideas. You are a nurturer. This is a testingyear of growth and building. Thisgrowth will occur beneath the surface.Do not make major changes yet — waituntil next year. Strengthen your financialposition by reducing your overhead.

HEaRt

It was formerly believed that the heart was the seat of all human emotions. Accordingly, the gifting of a heart signified the selfless act of giving everything to someone you love. Though the ancients were not aware that the heart was responsible for pumping blood though the circulatory system, yet they knew one thing for sure that the heart was the center of all feelings. This ancient belief has lingered on through the ages.

Ribbons, LaCEs anD FRiLLs

ribbons and laces have been associated with love and romance since the days when a knight used to ride into a battle sporting the scarf or handkerchief presented to him by his ladylove. In the bygone times, laces were used making women’s handkerchiefs. It was also usual for a lady to drop her handkerchief in the path of the man whose attention she wished to draw.

CuPiD

The love and attraction that a man and a lady feels for one another is traditionally ascribed to the mythological god,Cupid. In Latin, the word Cupid means “desire.” Cupid is represented as a naked, chubby boy with wings and possessing a mischievous smile. He carries a bow with a quiver of arrows which he uses to transfix the hearts of youths and maidens. Click here to know more on Cupid.

tHE RosE

From time immemorial, beloveds have been compared to roses. If we juggle the letters of the word rOSE we get ErOS, who is the God of Love. rose has thus been the traditional choice of lovers around the world. The colour red is associated with strong emotions and below are listed sentiments expressed by different hues of rose:-

Lavender -- Enchantment and UniquenessOrange -- FascinationPink (Dark) -- Thankfulness, Friendship and Admirationred -- Love, respect and CouragePeach -- Modesty, Gratitude, Admiration and SympathyPink (Pale) -- Grace, Joy and HappinessDeep red -- Beauty and PassionWhite -- Innocence, Purity, Secrecy, Silence, reverence, Humility and (according to some sources) True LoveYellow -- Joy, Friendship, Jealousy, Hope and FreedomBlack -- Farewellred/White -- Unity or EngagementYellow/Orange -- Passionate ThoughtsYellow/red -- Congratulationsrosebud -- Beauty, Youth and a Heart Innocent of Lovered rosebud -- Purity and LovelinessWhite rosebud -- GirlhoodOne Dozen red roses -- “I Love You”Single red rose in Full Bloom -- “I Love You”Tea roses -- “I’ll remember Always”

a brush right around the corner there, have at it.”

He thanks her, and heads to-wards the bucket. She returns inside and resumes her knit-ting. After about an hour, she gets up to check on his prog-

ress. She sees no man, and the porch hasn’t been touched. Just then, she hears knocking again

at her door.

She is greeted by the same man, green paint splattered on his clothes and in his beard, a

wide grin on his face.

“All done ma’am. And by the way, it’s a Cadillac, not a

Porsche.”

The football team was getting clobbered. The first-string quar-terback was injured. The second-string quarterback was injured. Even the punter was injured. All the coach had left was their third-stringer who had yet to play a down all year. He pulled the quarterback aside. “Look son, we can’t afford to let them score again. We’ve got to run some time off the clock. Here’s what I want you to do.” “On first down, run it to the left. On second down, run it to the right. On third down run it up the middle. The, on fourth down, punt it as far as you can punt it. “OK coach!” said the quarterback. On first down he ran it to the left for 30 yards. On second down he ran it to the right for 40 more. On third down he ran it up the middle down to the one yard line. Then, on 4th down, the quarterback dropped back and punted the ball right out of the end zone. When he got to the sideline, the coach was screaming! “What were you thinking?!!!?!!!” The quarterback replied, “I was thinking I must be playing for the dumbest coach in the world.”

A man was just waking up from anesthesia after surgery, and his wife was sitting by his side. His eyes fluttered open and he said,

“You are beautiful.” Then he fell asleep again. His wife had never heard him say that, so she stayed by his side. A few minutes later, his eyes fluttered open and he said, “You are

cute!” The wife was disappointed because instead of “beautiful,” it was now “cute.” She said, “What happened to ‘beautiful’?”

Her husband replied, “The drugs are wearing off!”
