In its third season under head coach Martin Smith, the University of Oklahoma men’s track and field program continued its assault on the Oklahoma records and history books.

The 2008 indoor season saw the Oklahoma men’s track and field program reach its highest national ranking ever when it climbed to No. 3 in the national rankings at the end of January.

Four men, Sheldon Leith, Marcus Pugh and triple jumpers Shardae Boutte and Tydree Lewis, traveled to Fayetteville, Ark., for the 2008 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.

The quartet accounted for 13 team points, which gave the Sooners a 15th-place finish, as Leith, Lewis and Boutte earned All-America honors. Only six points separated a number of teams as No. 8 Florida finished with 19 points. Arizona State won the NCAA team title with 44 points.

Lewis, who entered the triple jump competition ranked eighth in the nation, bested Boutte’s previous program triple jump record with a jump of 54-2.50 (16.52) to take second in the event. The jump eclipsed Lewis’ personal indoor record of 52-7.25 (16.03).

Boutte entered the final meet as the nation’s top-ranked athlete in the event with the previous school record mark of 54-1.00 (16.48) set earlier in the season, but came up short in Fayetteville with a top jump of 52-2.75 (15.92).

The season was not a disappointment for Boutte as the senior claimed the Big 12 Conference crown in the event, one of four individual event titles on the season for Boutte.

Another highlight of the indoor season was the senior hurdler Leith putting together a four-meet win streak in the 60-meter hurdles from January into Feburary. It culminated with a win in the prestigious New Balance Collegiate Invitational.

During the streak, Leith broke the tie he had held with Jason Stanley and established himself as the undisputed Oklahoma record holder in the event.

Leith and Lewis weren’t the only Oklahoma athletes establishing program records during the indoor season. Rob Sorrell made his presence known in the OU record books, as an individual and as a member of a relay.

One day after Leith set the 60-meter hurdles record, Sorrell set the mile record at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational, covering the distance in a time of 4:03.66.

It was not the only time, however, that Sorrell’s named would go atop the Sooner performance lists. The redshirt-freshman teamed with Brayon Brown, Tony Clement and Zach Dawson on the record-breaking distance medley relay.

The quartet didn’t take long to gel, breaking the program record in the third meet of the indoor season. The four would later post the program’s fifth-fastest time as well.

In the outdoor season, Boutte led all Oklahoma men with six individual event titles, all but one coming in the triple jump.

Two of Boutte’s biggest jumps added hardware to the OU trophy case. The senior leapt to titles at the Big 12 Championships, claiming an indoor/outdoor sweep, and the NCAA Midwest Regional, the latter establishing a program record of 55-0.00 (16.76).

Boutte was one of two Oklahoma men to place their names atop the record books during the 2008 outdoor season. Buck Sullivan, in his first year on the Divison I level, quickly made a name for himself, grabbing the program record in the hammer in just the third outdoor meet of the season.

Behind Boutte with most individual titles, Pugh and sophomore Zach Dawson each recorded three wins apiece.

While Pugh’s career as one of the most exciting sprinters in OU history came to a close, Dawson gave Sooner fans a sneak peek at the development of Oklahoma’s latest sprints star. He recorded the seventh-fastest 400-meter hurdles time in program history and won two titles in the event.

Pugh and Boutte were two of six Oklahoma men to qualify for the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. It was there that Boutte claimed All-America honors in the triple jump.

Following the season, pole vaulter Chip Heuser received ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America honors while Kevin Schwab took third in the 10,000-meter run at the U.S. Jr. National Championships. Boutte, Lewis and Pugh all traveled to Eugene, Ore., to compete in the U.S. Olympic Trials.

In the third season under head coach Martin Smith and associate head coach Dana Boone, the University of Oklahoma women’s track and field program continued to show steady improvement.

The program remained in the top half of the Big 12 Conference with a sixth-place finish at the 2008 Big 12 Outdoor Championships. The team also earned multiple event titles throughout the year to go with six NCAA All-Americans.

Junior Latoya Greaves quickly made a name for herself on the Division I level after transferring from Oklahoma Baptist. The Jamaican native followed up her indoor success by winning the 100-meter hurdles title at the Big 12 Championships, accomplishing the conference sweep and setting an OU program record.

The winning did not stop at the conference meet for Greaves as she secured the event’s title at the NCAA Midwest Regional as well. The win marked one of eight in the event throughout the season for Greaves who became OU’s first-ever female hurdler to capture NCAA All-America honors with a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Championships.

For the second consecutive year, the OU women’s program had an athlete earn two All-America honors in the same outdoor season as horizontal jumper Toni Smith replicated Yolanda Goff’s effort in 2007.

The senior extended her own program record in the triple jump to finish sixth and earn her fourth career NCAA All-America honor. The effort came one day after earning her third career honor in the long jump, an event she leaves OU at third in the program’s record book.

Under first-year throws coach Brian Blutreich, Amy Backel concentrated solely on the throws after beginning her career as a multi-event athlete. The decision paid off handily for the sophomore who set the program record in the event and finished seventh at the NCAA Championships and become OU’s first woman to earn the honors in the javelin.

While one OU star’s career started to shine, another’s came to an end in 2008 as Jessica Eldridge closed out her collegiate career as one of OU’s most decorated distance runners.

Eldridge did so with her fourth career NCAA All-America honor. The senior, who is one of just six OU women to garner the honor in cross country, picked up her fourth career All-America honor in the 1,500-meter run.

The 2008 OU women made their marks in the OU record books. Sophomore Scottesha Miller ran program record times in the 100- and 200-meter dash. Greaves and Backel took over the top spots in the 100-meter hurdles and javelin while Smith extended her top mark in the triple jump. In all, 25 marks were added to the OU performance lists in 2008.

Following the season, Backel was named an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American while Catherine Odell was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VI team.

Miller and Leslie Cole teamed together on the U.S. team at the NACAC Under-23 Track & Field Championships and each won a gold medal while Greaves competed for Jamaica, earning silver and bronze medals.

Backel, Cole, Miller and Smith all traveled to Eugene, Ore., to compete in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials with Backel, Cole and Smith all recording top-15 finishes.

The 2008 indoor season for the University of Oklahoma women’s team was a mixture of returning student-athletes and new faces, both contributing to a number of highlights throughout the season.

One of those newcomers, Latoya Greaves, broke through in her first season on the Division I level.

After completing the regular season with fast times, but no titles, the Jamaican native put it all together in the Big 12 Conference Championships with a personal-best 8.21 to grab the 60-meter hurdles title.

Greaves qualified for the NCAA Championships where she finished 10th.

Joining Greaves at the NCAA meet was a familiar face to Oklahoma track followers in Leslie Cole. The junior captured her third career All-America honor by finishing ninth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 53.65.

Another newcomer to the Oklahoma program, Mikaela Johansson made a name for herself in the 2008 indoor season by rewriting the Oklahoma record books in the weight throw.

The Swedish native tossed the weighted bag a distance of 55-1.00 (16.79) to eclipse the former program record of 52-8.00 (16.05), set by Katherine Webster in 2000.

Katherine Johnson posted a season-best height of 5-8.00 (1.73) in the high jump to take second at the Big 12 Championships while three OU women, Cole (400-meter dash), Kristi Cook (800-meter run) and Tijahnni Newton (600-yard run), took bronze at the conference meet.

HENRY D. AND IDA MOSIER MEMORIAL ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT

The Henry D. Mosier Track Scholarship was established in memory of Henry D. Mosier, who graduated from the OU School of Pharmacy, and participated on the Sooner track team in 1910-11.

Henry and Ida Mosier always had an interest in the University of Oklahoma Track program. They donated funds to help build the Mosier Indoor Facility. Some of the money also has been used to resurface the track inside the Mosier Facility. Annually, honorary scholarship recipients are selected by the Sooner track program.
