ZELL 2014 – 2015 | STUDENT BIOS

Zell Entrepreneurship Program

Currently in its fourteenth year, the Zell Entrepreneurship Program has evolved into an acclaimed venture creation program, providing students with an opportunity to apply advanced entrepreneurial studies to the creation of real business ventures.

Generously supported in vision and funding by Sam Zell of Chicago, the program is designed for outstanding undergraduates in their final year of the business, law, communications, computer science, government, psychology or economics programs at IDC Herzliya who aspire to work in an entrepreneurial organization or launch their own start-up.

This innovative program provides a platform for the development of a business venture from concept to launch by combining customized learning and invaluable practical experience over the course of an academic year. The program is taught in English in order to best acclimate students to the global business environment. The intimate seminar setting gives students a unique opportunity to receive professional and personal guidance from accomplished instructors, mentors and the business community. Moreover, the ecosystem of support encompassing the program, including its active alumni network, offers program participants a gateway to making their entrepreneurial dreams a reality.

ZELL 2014 – 2015 | IDC HERZLIYA + ZELL

IDC Herzliya

Modeled after distinguished colleges in the United States, IDC Herzliya was founded in 1994 by the renowned Israeli professor Uriel Reichman. He and a small group of founders sought to create an Israeli university where personal achievement would go hand in hand with social responsibility. IDC Herzliya is a private, non-profit institution of higher education that does not rely on government subsidy.

Currently, IDC Herzliya’s growing student body consists of over 6,500 undergraduate and graduate students in 10 schools, including law, business administration, computer science, government, communications, psychology, economics, sustainability and entrepreneurship. In addition, the Raphael Recanati International School (RRIS) offers 1,500 students from over 80 countries undergraduate and graduate programs taught entirely in English.

IDC Herzliya is dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in education and research, and the training of Israel’s future leaders. In order to achieve these goals, IDC Herzliya offers innovative interdisciplinary educational programs that combine academic study with practical, hands-on training. The Zell Entrepreneurship Program is a prime example of this unique approach.

“The Zell Entrepreneurship Program embodies the very spirit and substance of IDC Herzliya – innovation, leadership and enterprise. The program combinesinterdisciplinary academic study with experiential venture creation to instill leadership values and provide the requisite tools to nurture and educate the future business leadership of Israel”

Prof. Uriel ReichmanPresident and Founder,IDC Herzliya

Sam zell

Sam Zell is the Chairman of Equity Group Investments, the private, Chicago-based investment firm he founded more than 45 years ago. His investments span industries and continents, and include interests in finance, energy, transportation, communications and real estate.

Mr. Zell began his career in real estate as an undergraduate at the University of Michigan where he managed apartment buildings throughout Southeast Michigan. While he is recognized as a founding father of the public real estate industry after creating three of the largest real estate investment trusts (REITs) in history, the majority of Mr. Zell’s investment portfolio is outside of real estate.

Mr. Zell chairs five public companies listed on the New York Stock Exchange. He is also the Chairman of Equity International, a privately held, leading investor in real estate-related business outside of the Unites States.

Previously, Mr. Zell served as Chairman of Equity Office Properties Trust (EOP), which was sold in February 2007 to The Blackstone Group for $39 billion in the largest private equity transaction in history at the time.

For many years, Mr. Zell served as the Chairman of the American Friends of IDC Herzliya. He established the Zell Entrepreneurship Program in 2001 together with IDC Herzliya President Prof. Uriel Reichman.

“I am very proud to be associated with IDC Herzliya and this entrepreneurial program. The goal is to identify the entrepreneurial talents that people innately have and attempt to hone them to produce an optimum result. History has shown that truly successful entrepreneurs combine creativity and execution, and hopefully the entrepreneurial experience at IDC Herzliya will provide this pace for their future.

The Zell Entrepreneurship Program is run by Liat Aaronson, who as the Executive Director of the program for the last eight years, has guided the development of the program from a venture consulting and business plan formulation emphasis to hands-on venture creation.

The Academic Director of the program is Prof. Yair Tauman, a renowned Professor of Game Theory and the Founding Dean of the new Adelson School of Entrepreneurship. He also serves as a Director at the Center for Game Theory in Economics at the State University in Stony Brook, NY.

The Program Coordinator is Ms. Dana Barda Malka, a Bar Ilan University social studies graduate. Dana facilitates student-faculty administration and coordinates on-campus activities.

The program is also guided by an active advisory board comprised of entrepreneurs and investors who help the program management develop the program's structure and curriculum, meet with the student teams to guide them in their ventures, and instillentrepreneurial values through lectures and meetings with the students.ץ

ZELL 2014 – 2015 | PROGRAM COMPOSITION AND COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

S u m m e r P r o g r a m :

After a challenging three-month application process – starting with a grilling online application including open questions, a CV upload, a venture proposal submission and two letters of recommendation, followed by a faculty interview, four alumni interviews and an interview with two members of the advisory board – a select group of candidates is invited to take part in Zell’s Summer Induction Program (SIP) for a first-hand “SIP” of the program.

SIP is a 10-day intensive summer program that combines lectures, workshops, offsites and activities with program alumni. It is a chance for the program to get to know the candidates better, for the candidates to get to know the program better, and for the candidates to get to know each other better in order to facilitate effective team formation once the program begins.

After SIP, the final stage of acceptance, the program effectively kicks off in the summer months with team formation and intensive ideation.

Ultimately, one of the most useful and important tools that Zell Program participants gain access to is the strong network of support and continuing education opportunities that the Zell Program provides its alumni through the Zell Alumni Network and its events.

Z A N N E TDeveloped over a weekend alumni hackathon, ZANNET is a network for tapping into Zellations making relevant connections and getting assistance from fellow Zellots for start-ups, job connections, referrals, MBA advice, etc.

Zell Alumni Network and Events

Z 2 ZZ2Z, or “Zell2Zell”, is an ad-hoc bi-monthly peer group for current Zell students and alumni to present their ventures and business issues to each other for feedback and help. Z2Z is a great opportunity to tap the wisdom of the Zell Alumni Network in person, and get real feedback from alumni and professionals who have been there before.

Z 4 ZThe Z4Z personal development project is a moderated peer group training activity led by the Zell Alumni Team in which groups meet monthly to discuss and train on issues like group forming and group training. The program is truly an amazing opportunity to build important life skills that go beyond the classroom.

Students gain admission to the Zell Alumni Network Facebook Group upon graduation from the program. With a membership of over 220 active Zell alumni with experience and positions across various different business and technology sectors, the Zell Alumni Network is a place for program alumni and faculty to connect, share ideas, personal stories and feedback, and circulate job and business opportunities.

Zell Alumni Network on Facebook

S u m m e r G r a d u at i o n Z e l l e b r at i o nRight around graduation, a “zellebration” ensues to mark the end of another Zell year. This year the event was held at MindSpace, a shared work space in Tel Aviv founded by one of the members of the Zell 4 class and managed by a Zell 12 alumnus.

W i n t e r E v e n tEvery winter, the Zellots get together for a reception event. The event is held at different venues such as the Heseg House on Rothschild Blvd. or the Google Campus TLV, with keynote addresses from leading industry figures such as Sam Zell, Shlomo Dovrat, Sir Ronald Cohen and Yanki Margalit.
