The Wheatsheaf in Chilton is raising funds for ‘Stand up to Cancer’ by holding a Coffee Morning on Saturday 27th October from 11am.There will be homemade

cup cakes, tea and coffee, as well as juice, sweets and crisps for youngsters. There will also be a tombola with some excellent prizes.

The areas of the Flanders and Picardy saw some of the most appalling fighting of World War 1.There was complete dev-astation. Where homes, farms and countryside had once been, a sea of mud and carnage engulfed everything. One thing, however did survive each year; the poppies. Their vibrant colour in this mud and desolation gave heart and hope to the soldiers fighting in the trenches: and so the poppy became a symbol of hope and reassurance. The poppy became recognised as an important reminder of the war and, in Britain, under the guidance of Mayor George

Howson MC, a small group of disabled servicemen started to make artificial poppies. So the Poppy Appeal as we know it spread from small beginnings into the powerful and successful movement that it is today. All money raised by the Appeal still goes to help serving and ex-servicemen and their wives and their dependants in times of need through the Royal British Legion’s Benevolent Fund.Poppies will be on sale throughout Ferryhill from Friday 26th October and will be available at most business outlets. Anyone wishing to

purchase car poppies, large poppies, wooden crosses or enamel poppy badges can do so from Ferryhill Town Hall. This year the 2012 enamel poppy badges are a restricted issue and will be sold on a first-come basis, so anyone wishing to purchase a badge should do so at their earliest conveni-ence.

There are three new junior displays at Chilton library this week. The first is for more advanced readers with a collection of books by the author Darren Shan including The Demonata (3) - Slawter. Nightmares haunt the dreams of Dervish Grady since his return from the Demonata universe, but Grubbs takes care of his Uncle as they both try to continue a normal, demon-free existence. When a legendary cult director calls in Dervish as a consultant for a new horror movie, it seems a perfect excuse for a break from routine and a chance for some fun. But being on the set of a town called Slawter stirs up more memories for Grubbs and his friend Bill-E.

While keeping with a scary theme, there is a selection of Meg and Mog books for younger readers to enjoy, including Meg at Sea. Meg makes one of her spells and gets more than she bargained for.In the non-fiction display there is a collection of fact books with informa-tion about World War Two, including the Witness to History Series. This series uses a variety of sources to give an insight into a particular period. The aim is to provide a history resource with a strong emphasis on evidence, using eye witness accounts from a range of source material, including diaries, letters and newspapers. An initial section introduces the period and the sources available. An extended

quotation for the source is on one page, facing a commentary giving the historical background. The reliability of the sources is considered.A Book and Chat session will be taking place the Library on Thursday 25th October from 2pm.Jeepers Creatures (Zoolab) will be visiting the Library on Thursday 1st November from 10.30am. There is a 50p charge for this session, which is suitable for 5 – 11 years only. The Halloween competi-tion will finish on Thursday 1st November.A spokesperson for the library said, “Please remember to have your age and card number only on the front. “Winners will be contact via a phone call after 1st November.”

Back in March 2011, it was reported that Sedgefield & District Citizens Advice Bureau had no choice but to axe all of its outreach sessions due to a signifi-cant reduction in funding. However, Councillor David Farry came forward and offered to fund a weekly CAB session out of his Area Action Partnership Neigh-bourhood budget. This funding came to an end at the end of March 2012 but was saved temporarily by a further £500 donation by Councillor Farry.Thankfully, Ferryhill Town Council came forward and donated £2,500 to keep a bi-weekly session open throughout 2012/13 so that the town’s residents can access free independ-ent advice and informa-tion without the need to travel. The session in the town

is held every other Friday from 10am – 1pm in the Ladder Centre. The venue & facilities for this session are provided free of charge by The Ladder Centre, which allows the CAB to keep the cost of their session low and CAB very much appreciate The Ladder Centre's help and support.Donna Stewart Business Development Manager of the Bureau said, “As an advice service we understand that times are really difficult for people right now but our team of dedicated staff and volunteers are doing everything they can to continue to provide an advice service in as many locations as possible. “To help us cope with demand, we have introduced a telephone gateway line which

operates Monday to Friday each week.“Our gateway assessors will diagnose a person’s problem and either send information out to them which answers their enquiry or we make them an appointment with the appropriate caseworker.” You can contact the Telephone Gateway Service on 01388 825429 Monday to Thursday, 10am – 3pm and Friday, 10am – 1pm.CAB also continues to offer free debt advice so if you are getting behind with repayments, or have unmanageable debts, contact them for an appointment with one of their specialist debt workers. Appointments can also be made via the Ferryhill session as well as our gateway telephone line.

Allotment destroyed by vandalsPolice are appealing for witnesses after an allotment was targeted by vandals. The allotment, at West Chilton, is owned by Joseph Miller, who has grown show leeks and flowers at the site for 20 years. The culprits appear to have smashed locks to gain access to the gardens,

before stealing tools from Mr Miller as well as from two other gardens. They then set fire to the 65 year-old’s shed and destroyed his greenhouse.Anyone with information about the arson attack or the thefts, which occurred on Tuesday 16th October, should contact police on 101.

Each year, Chilton Town Council enters the town into the Northumbria in Bloom regional awards. This year, the town was awarded a silver medal for the best Small Town along with the Ken Sherwood Trophy in the Best Park in the Town Sections, Silver Gilt Medal for the Miner’s Welfare Recreation Ground. A spokesperson for the Council said, “Not to become complacent we are hoping to continue with this success with

the planting of the Town Council’s bulbs and additional supply from Durham County Council’s Civic Pride Team, who have kindly given us some bulbs as part of their 2012 bulb planting challenge.”On Friday 12th October, pupils from Chilton Primary School joined the Mayor, Councillor Elizabeth Bruce to plant crocuses, daffodils and bluebells which will hopefully brighten up the town in spring as they burst into an array of colour. The bulbs have been

planted in the grassed area opposite the junction to New South View. “Hopefully the combined effort of everyone involved and additional planting will enhance the town’s spring floral displays and help us in efforts to get another award in 2013 and build on our success,” continued the spokesperson, “Special thanks to everyone involved including pupils from Chilton Primary School, SE Landscaping and Durham County Council (Civic Pride Team).”

Dr Feelgood & Summer Lovin

My working life now nears its endRetirement now is nighI look back on my career

And sometimes give a sigh

I started as a keen young ladAll bouncy - full of cheer

But never thought - all my lifeI’d still be working here

I never sought promotionI’m happy with my lot

But I’m solid and reliable I think that means a lot

Sometimes work’s been dangerousSometimes no break for rest

But I’ve always played my partAnd always done my best

Met a girl at work and marriedThen had children - three!

They followed in our footstepsAnd now work with her and me

Now I’ve just hear they still need meMy pension - it must wait

So I’ll keep on working hardAnd never will be late

So if you see my family workingGreet us with a smile

We are road cones up at ThinfordAnd we’ll be here for a while!

The Mayor of Chilton, Councillor Elizabeth Bruce and her consort Councillor Alan Bruce have expressed their thanks to everyone who attended their recent Charity Evening. Thanks to the fantastic support, £683 was raised for the Mayor’s chosen charities; The Great

North Air Ambulance plus another charity to be confirmed.Elizabeth and Alan would like to thank the organisers, entertainers, Chilton Workingmen’s Club and everyone who kindly donated, bought tickets and assisted on the evening.

On Wednesday 3rd October, members and guests of Ferryhill Village WI thoroughly enjoyed a demonstration on easy ways to make jam from Chef John from Durham University. Once again he did not disappoint the ladies, who said they had a fantastic night. The group’s next meeting will be held on Wednesday 7th November in the Community Centre from 6.30pm, when they will be celebrating their 85th Birthday. Entertainment will be provided by duo "2SUM"

and the theme is fancy dress (optional). A spokesperson for the W.I. said, “I am sure we will have another fantastic evening.”On a less upbeat note, the ladies at the W.I. were very disappointed to discover that someone has stolen the oak tree which they planted at Manor Farm in commemoration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The spokesperson continued, “We would appreciate it if the culprit could please, please return the tree to the Town Council or a member of the Women’s Institute.”

W.I. enjoy visit from Chef John

Mayor’s thanksThe Ferryhill ‘6’ comprising of Councillors Zena Roddam and Doreen Barber plus Joyce Nunn, Ann Dawbney, Enid Ridley and Audrey Garnett, kindly donated £120 to the Ferryhill 2000 Committee, which organises events throughout Ferryhill. The funds were raised at the 2012 Summer Gala, despite the heavy rainfall during the Sunday afternoon.

The Ferryhill ‘6’ as they are known, work tirelessly throughout the year raising funds for charities and good causes. The Chairman of the 2000 Committee, Reverend Keith Lumsdon, praised the ladies for their efforts over the years and thanked them for this kind donation, which will help towards the costs of running this year’s Summer Gala.

The 2000 Committee is a self-funding organisation which organises events at Ferryhill and is made up of Town Councillors and members of the public.Meetings are held at 6.15pm every third Wednesday of the month in the Ferryhill Town Council Chambers. Anyone interested in becoming a member to help organise events is welcome to attend.

A Bishop Auckland man has pleaded guilty to using threatening and abusive words and behaviour, after he threatened to stab people in the eyes with a screwdriver when he was refused service at The Post Boy in Ferryhill. Aaron Edward Jefferies threatened and swore at staff in the pub on 6th September.

Following the scene, police were called, who found the 30 year-old asleep in a chair by the pool table. He was woken up and arrested after the officers discovered the screwdriver in his pocket.Jefferies continued to be abusive toward police, demanding that they remove his handcuffs and fight him.

In mitigation, Jonathan Harley said that Jefferies’ offending stemmed from his problems with alcohol abuse.Magistrates at Newton Aycliffe sentenced Jefferies to 16 weeks in custody but suspended it for 18 months, during which time he will be subject to probation su-pervision.

Dear Editor.

To the residents living in the vicinity of Ferryhill Community Hub on Lambton Road.

As manager of the bars and entertainment in The Hub, I would like to reassure the local residents that it is my intention to make sure that our customers leave The Hub as quietly as possible and respect you, our neighbours.

We will be working closely with the police, licensing and taxi firms to ensure that this happens.

The Hub is to be ran as a Private members’ Club, so not anyone off the street will be able to just walk in.

I have 20 years’ experience in the licensing trade and know all about selling alcohol responsibly. I’m sure the granting of a late licence would see people leaving The Hub at different times and not everyone coming out together. There are four different directions people can leave The Hub, so not everyone will be heading towards Skipton Close.

Yours Dave Athey
