Res Flak Do.JIBge on OperaM.ona of 22 Ootober. 1944.

' 1. In an effort to asnertail1 reas ms far the unusually low percentage of damage sustained by banbors o." t ' is Cor1mand durinB' the operation 0£ 22 October 1944, the ant~irornft of ricer of each Divis-i )n was contacted and reciuested to report by tolephone his reaction and bpreesions . The subject was already .under discussion et Divisio1a .

2. The following listed umxsual oounternoO:stll'es were employed by the Divisions during this operations

a . The lst Division at HANOVER was proceeded by i'ighter aircraft carrying chaff in drop tanks · with a leaflet-type ft~se . 1st Division force over BRUXJSWICK employod no special countermeasures .

b. The 2nd Division reports no unusual countermeasures, a1t a formation, somewr.iat looser than sual, -;-,as a' ' empted.

c. The .3rd Division at .mi :i .:i.t ' "~d tno bombers drop chaff' :m a . heading into the target , dif.f'ere it fror +. ' t ordered for the nain force .

3. It \vas the consensus o: U )iv:t., ~ on Antiniroraft Officers t1ia+, the amount of fire was substant... .y 1 t'inn could bo accounted for by the above tactics .

4. The f'ollor1ing reasons we1•e advanced as Joaaible exPlanations 1

a. One reason is thought; to be internal with the German antiab•cre.f'tJ to conserve ammunition, rihen the or1mces of hitting are small.

b. Thore has been a subste.n·h:lal ':..ncrcaso i'l he number or guns in the ~eneral area of the RIII!IB RIVm, rr"r O Tl!lU>A.L through STRASBOURG, and this area has b&l9n well cov -- eel by ' 1otographic rec on-

-9M, . There is a possibility that sane ' £10 guns ba1 ieved to have been at HANOVER, BRUNSWICK, and irrJHST}~, have nctm .ly been moved near.:. er to "",he battle area . ·

c . Visibility during the operation '.:as 10/10 cloud . Antiaircrr.ft fire is invariably rnuoh loss accurate am radar countermeasures are always more beneficial under no:n-visual c Jnditions .

d. A total of lcY)7 aircraft fl·rn1 over ap :Jroximately 350 heavy guns . It is not unusual for a s:lmilnr nur~ber > ' aircraft to fly r:r1er t.argete which ere defended by J:!O!'O t 'all l, 000 heavy ffUilS •
