The Masical Musical Music and Lyrics by ROBERT WRIGHT and GEORGE FORREST

(Based on Themes of S. RACHMANINOFF)

Orchestra Conducted by HAROLD HASTINGS ACT ONE

In 1925 in a Berlin sanatorium, a girl (Constance Towers) who claims to be the youngest daughter of the Czar, the Princess Anastasia, receives a visitor, (Michael Kermoyan). She tells him that her name is Anya...Anya Romanoff. He tells her that despite his current occupation as a taxi-driver, he is Prince Bounine, once General of the Koulom Cossacks, who knew Princess Anastasia as a young girl. Though he considers the girl an imposter he is struck by her resemblance to the real Anastasia. He goes down to the office to identity her and Anya sings ‘A Song From Somewhere”. Bounine returns and tells her that in order to be released, she must tell the authorities that she has recognized him from the old days. Anya agrees and is taken to the office. Bounine then reveals his plan to use this girl to get the Czar’s millions released from the Bank of England.

Bounine takes Anya to the crowded Cafe Czarina which is owned by two friendly expatriates: Katrina (Irra Petina) and husband Josef (Boris Aplon). Anya waits outside while Bounine makes arrangements for her living quarters in the cellar of the Cafe. As the final treat of tne evening Katrina sings “Vodka, Vodka!’ for the customers. Genia, the beautiful Countess Hohenstadt (Karen Shepard) arrives looking for her lover, Bounine. Bounine requests that she supply him with some of her clothes, but he does not at this point tell her why. She pouts over his abruptness, but agrees and leaves. Chernov (George S. Irving), a dabbler in the black market, enters the scene and offers with Petrovin (Ed Stette), another shady speculator, to tinance the plot to get the Czar’s millions, but only if there is a chance the girl is suitable to the part of Princess Anastasia. Anya is brought in and compared with photographs of the real Princess. Bounine, Chernov, Petrovin and Josef paint a memory picture of the Princess Anastasia reviewing her Koulom Cossacks from the steps of the Winter Palace as they sing “So Proud”. Even though Anya runs off to her room under the pressure of the moment, Chernov is convinced and gives money to Bounine to set the girl up as befits royalty. With Bounine’s promise to return every day to coach the girl in her role, the plotters leave the Cafe. Katrina, the only one who believes that Anya is the true Princess, reveals her yearning for Russia in “Homeward”, A month later in a rented chateau, Anya faces her first test. She appears before a group of peasants who at one time were attached to the royal household as servants. One of the children, Tinka (Barbara Alexander) presents her with a jeweled Faberge egg, which when opened, reveals a mechanical singing Snowbird. When pressed by the peasants to sing the Snowbird song Anya at tirst loses confidence, but regaining her composure finally sings the song, “Snowflakes and Sweethearts” to the great delight of the peasants. She passes the test with such flying colors tnat tnere is now some question as to whether or not the Princess Anastasia really did escape. Chernov, Petrovin, Josef and Katrina, elated at Anya’s success, sing “On That Day”. Having been accepted by the peasants, Anya is now prepared by Bounine, Chernov and Petrovin for a crucial meeting with Prince Paul (John Michael King). Paul, a distant cousin, was at one time to marry the Princess Anastasia. The subject

of the cross-examination is “The Six Palaces” of the royal family: palaces where Paul and Anastasia knew each other as children. As tthe scene fades, Prince Paul and Anya are discovered in the courtyard of the chateau which Chernov has had

decorated in the manner of the Chinese Island of Catherine tne Great. Together they sing “Hand In Hand”. He is entranced with her. The plotters are delighted. But Anya now has begun to act like a Princess and curtly dismisses everyone but Bounine. It becomes evident that the presence of Genia has aroused feelings of jealousy in Anya. She questions Bounine about love and with his reply they sing “This Is My Kind Of Love”.

Now, on the eve of the announcement of Prince Paul’s engagement to Anya, Bounine decides to try and see the Dowager Empress (Lillian Gish), Anastasia’s Grandmother, who is living in Denmark. If she will accept Anya as the Princess Anastasia his fortune will be made; the Bank of England will have to release the Czar’s money. Genia arrives to tell Bounine she is aware that their affair is over and that she is going on a trip...a trip to rejoin her husband.

Genia and Bounine leave together for the railway station: he to go to Denmark. But Anya completely misunderstands and believes they are going away together. Anya goes to her engagement reception and after the guests sing a reprise of “On That Day”, announces to her horrified audience and the stunned Prince Paul, that she is an imposter, coached in her role by Bounine, Chernov and Petrovin. It is on this cataclysmic scene that the curtain falls on Act One.

ACT TWO

In the chateau, Anya, Chernov and Petrovin are now under house arrest. German policemen are everywhere, Bounine returns in a rage and has Anya dragged before him. He shocks Anya with the news that he was in Denmark with the Empress and that she has agreed to grant her a brief interview. Though he is furious with Anya, Bounine now has to get her out past the German policemen. Katrina, having charmed the Germans with bottles of vodka joins Bounine, Chernov, Petrovin and Josef in “That Prelude!”. During the number they engage the policemen’s aid in getting Katrina’s relics and furniture back to the Cafe Czarina. Having placed Anya behind a large screen, Bounine orders two of his former Cossacks, Sergei (Jack Dabdoub) and Yegor (Walter Hook) to carry it out. They do so and Anya is on her way to Denmark.

The Dowager Empress now receives Anya. At first contemptuous, curt and cold in her attitude, the Empress is staggered by the intimate family details revealed by Anya. The Empress tries to recover her composure, but when Anya finds words at last for “The Song From Somewhere”, all her doubt vanishes and the two lonely women cling to each other as grandmother and granddaughter. Racked with emotion the Empress begs leave to rest and goes to her room with the words, ‘‘...and if it should not be you, don’t ever tell me...’ To a melody from “A Song From Somewhere”, Anya sings “A Quiet Land”.

Unaware that the Empress has accepted Anya, Chernov, Petrovin and Josef console each other in “Here Tonight — Tomorrow Where?” Katrina and Anya, resplendent in new clothes, arrive with news of the recognition. Bounine is shocked at the realization that Anya is in fact going to marry Prince Paul. Katrina’s friends, the German policemen, led by the Sergeant (Howard Kahl), come to say farewell to her with ‘‘Leben Sie Wohl”. Left alone Bounine confesses his love for Anya but each realizes: that royal duty has come between them. They sing “If This Is Goodbye”. As the scene fades, they kiss and Anya runs off.

The Dowager Empress, accompanied by her lady-in-waiting, the Baroness Livenbaum (Margaret Mullen) makes a surprise visit to Berlin. She brings an odd present for Anya, a little coat; a child’s coat. She speaks to Anya of “the gift of love” in “Little Hands”, and tells Anya that she releases her from her pledge of duty. Anya is free. The Empress tells Bounine to stay with Anya and leaves to address the Russians who have come from all over the city of Berlin to greet her. It is then that Anya finds the secret of the little coat. Sewn in the lining is a small treasure of jewelry...enough to pay all the people who financed her cause. :

At the reception the Empress announces that Anya is the true Princess Anastasia. The Russians cheer this news but are puzzled by the arrival of Chernov, carrying a tray of jewels and accompanied by: Katrina. The fact is that Anya has renounced her title and is returning the Czar’s jewels to pay back those who financed her. Katrina says Anya kept only one diamond and one ruby...enough to buy a ranch in the Argentine. Anya and Bounine have left. Calmly taking in this series of events, the Dowager Empress remarks quietly that the fact is she helped to bring it all about. With a sly look on her face the Empress turns to leave as the Russians sing “All Hail The Empress” and the curtain falls. | Bye
