A temptation is not a sin. It is simply an invitation to sin. It puts us at acrossroads - do we give way or take a stand on the side of conscience? We can alsothink of Lent as a crossroads. It is an invitation to renew our faith. Do we takethe opportunity of a fresh beginning or do we leave things as they are? Do we takea step forward or do we slip backward? There is no standing still in the Christianlife.

The devil does his best demolition work by discouragement. Quarrels, difficulties, the break-up of relationships, can narrow our vision to look only atthe problems and fail to bring God into the bigger picture. We may be tempted togive up and to see ourselves as powerless. Christians through the ages haveovercome this temptation by sincere and trustful prayer to Jesus asking for hispower and protection. As the letter to the Hebrews says, "because he has himselfbeen through temptation he is able to help others who are tempted".

May the Lord guide and direct you with every blessing this Holy Season,

Fr Gerry
