Please come prepared with sunscreen, hat, long sleeve top, water bottle and closed footwear for walking, water-based activities and rockpool rambles.• Minimum age for all activities is 8 years old.• Children under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian.

Snorkelling at Clovelly & Gordons Bay$15 PER PERSON

Experience snorkelling with the experts - learn to use the equipment properly and develop effective snorkelling techniques while discovering and identifying the local marine life. Look out for the famous blue gropers while you’re experiencing the diverse marine life in these protected near-shore reefs in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs.

Meet at the education trailer at the eastern corner of Clovelly beach car park (allow time to park and find trailer). Snorkelling gear provided as part of activity. Children under 16 must be accompanied in the water by an adult (minimum age 8-years-old). Adults accompanying children in the water need to pay for the activity. Maximum 14 people per session.

Catchment to Coast, Fred Hollow’s Reserve ‘Walk & Talk’$5 PER PERSON

Venture through one of the last remaining open creek lines in the eastern suburbs and hear from Sydney Bush Regenerators expert Danny Hirschfeld about the history, the hidden plant life and exotic bird species.

Meet Bligh Place Randwick (allow time for parking). Maximum 20 people.

Learn to Surf$15 PER PERSON, ADULTS AND CHILDREN

Interested in giving surfing a try? This popular activity promises to give you an authentic taste of surfing while keeping you safe. Professional instructors will teach you about waves and the beach, and importantly, how to keep upright on your surfboard. Wetsuits and surfboards provided.

Meet at the south end of the Maroubra beach Pavilion, near the Lifeguards office. Wear swimmers and sunscreen. Minimum age 8 yrs. Children under 16 yrs must have a parent or adult guardian in attendance during the lesson. Maximum 18 people.

Rockpool Ramble, South Maroubra$5 PER PERSON

Discover the marine creatures of the South Maroubra rock platforms and inter-tidal zone. As the ocean retreats it leaves an abundant array of sea creatures on display which our local marine biologists will identify and discuss, explaining how each of us can minimise our impact on these fragile creatures.

Meet at South Maroubra Surf Lifesaving Club. Participants must wear closed footwear, NO THONGS ALLOWED. Maximum 40 people.

How the coast was formed ‘Walk & Talk’$5 PER PERSON

Did you know Coogee is built on giant sand dunes? But, how did they get there? What is a neap tide? What will our beaches look like in 20 years? This is a rare opportunity to join Australia’s leading coastal scientist, Professor Bruce Thom as he uncovers the hidden secrets of our coast as you stroll along the coastal walkway between Coogee Beach and Lurline Bay.

Meet outside Coogee Surf Life Saving Club – (south end of Coogee beach). Maximum 20 people.

OceanFit for families$20 PER PAIR

Learn from OceanFit’s expert ocean swimming instructors about how to keep your family safe in the waves this summer. If you are a parent, this introductory clinic will instil confidence in your ability to instruct your children at the beach. You’ll learn about assessing ocean conditions, how to teach core ocean safety skills, and how to ensure your child grows up to love the ocean and not be overcome by fear and anxiety. If you’re a child, you’ll have the best fun learning with your family and friends how to stay safe in the ocean, dive under waves and how to body surf!

Meet outside Coogee Surf Life Saving Club – (south end of Coogee beach). Maximum 6 adult/child pairs. Minimum age 8 years.

Sharks! ‘talk & quiz’FREE ACTIVITY!

Did you know that out of the 180 species of sharks in Australian waters only four species are dangerous to humans. Sharks occur in all habitats around the Australian coast line and are mostly found on the continental shelf. Did you know that Grey Nurse sharks have their own sanctuary at Magic Point, Maroubra and that these twin-finned sharks are harmless to humans yet critically endangered. With many Australians concerned about the risk of shark attacks, marine biologist, Dr Alexandra Campbell will share current research and her expert insights into this highly impassioned and important field of study and help our community be more informed about these often feared cartilaginous fish in our oceans and estuaries.

Maximum 50 people. Great ‘shark’ prizes to be won.

Bushcare is about groups of volunteers working to restore the natural environment in urban and coastal areas across Australia. Take this opportunity to work along with our experts and learn about the unique plant species found in Fred Hollows Reserve, one of the last remaining open creek lines in the eastern suburbs. You’ll find out how to monitor the local bush fauna and collect seeds for propagation… and best of all, you’ll meet a whole new group of dedicated and bush-caring friends.

Provided: wide brim hat, gardening gloves, natural insect repellent and morning tea. Meet Bligh Place Randwick (allow time for parking). Maximum 12 people.

Kamay Botany Bay Guided tour by Adventure Boat$20 PER PERSON (REFRESHMENTS PROVIDED)

Expect to get your feet wet when boarding this adventure boat to Kamay Botany Bay National Park. Experienced boat tour operators will transport you across the waters to Cook’s Landing. You’ll explore the Banks-Solander track, with its fascinating insights into the once-widespread vegetation communities that Cook’s botanists explored, and learn from your guide about the Aboriginal cultural heritage of the area.

Expect to get your feet wet when boarding this adventure boat tour around Botany Bay. Experienced boat tour operators will ferry you across Botany Bay. You will discover the rich marine environments of Towra Point Nature Reserve and Kamay National Park. See Cook’s landing site and Bare Island as you venture and explore this busy port.

Walk the Fort guided tourFREE ACTIVITY!

At European contact Bare Island was associated with the Gweagal and Kameygal Aboriginal groups and referred to by Captain Cook as a “small bare island”. Since those early times, the island has experienced a variety of uses and recognitions, from being a late nineteenth century coastal defense site, a veterans home, and site location for the film Mission Impossible 2.

Meet your National Parks and Wildlife Service Discovery Ranger across the footbridge where you’ll share the experiences of this nationally significant place.

Meet at the top of the path to Bare Island at La Perouse. Maximum 20 people per tour.

Dr Rip’s Science of the Surf Talk (with dye release rip identification demonstration)

FREE ACTIVITY!

Do you know how to spot rip currents and how to get out of one? Do you know how waves form and break? What’s a safe wave and an unsafe wave? Why are some beaches safer than others? How will your beach be affected by climate change? Why is rock fishing the most dangerous sport in Australia?

Keep safe in the surf this summer and understand your favourite beach better by learning how to “read” the conditions of the beach and surf by attending this informative and entertaining presentation.

Six randomly chosen attendees will receive a free copy of Dr Rip’s Essential Beach Book. Maximum 100 people.

All care has been made in the preparation of the 2016 Marine and Coastal Adventure Program but some changes may occur due to circumstances beyond the control of Randwick City Council. Refunds will be provided for paid activities in the event of cancellation by Council.
