Mr. V M Mathew, Engineering Consultant, Divyashree Builders, brought the Christian beliefs and practices into the discussion and emphasized the need to follow the path of righteousness and faith in God

Mr. V M Mathew

The value of compatibility and integrity in religions of the world was highlighted by Mr. M A Shiraj, Journalist. His travels abroad had brought home one important truth – that mankind merely differentiated their faith by names and terms but beneath that veneer all religions were built on common beliefs of love and brotherhood.

The event was an opportunity for all to connect with those they assume to be different and take the valuable lessons on humanity above all.

Mr. M A Shiraj

Karnataka State Rajyotsava Award, set the tone of the day with Kabir’s verses on secularism and recited these melodiously, to the delight of the audience. The poetic depth rooted in secularism was recited in the raw rustic energy of a trained vocalist and it transported the listeners to the centuries old spirit of religious plurality.

Mr. Hussain Saab KanakagiriSANGAMA – MSRF Annual Day Celebrations on 28 April 2018RIMS Annual Day – Sangama 2018 (represents a combined day for RIMS, RIBS and RILS) was a culmination of extra-curricular events held during the academic year 2017-18.

BEL, Kalakshetra was abuzz with events that ran into the evening. Sri Mimicry Dayanand was the Chief Guest. Prize Winners of the year, in sports and cultural were felicitated. The masterfully choreographed theme walks, group dances and solo performances gave the celebration new colours and tone.

Chief Guest addressed the gathering and gave it a memorable twist by interspersing several comic lines amidst the advice and recollections. The insights on the art and practice of mimicry was a new learning. Shree Dayanand is an Indian impressionist, stand-up comedian, actor and television presenter from Karnataka. He is renowned for imitating politicians and lm actors.

Dayanand has featured in many comedy albums and has presented a television show, Kachaguli that aired on ETV Kannada.

Director’s message, read by Prof. Prasad Linganna, reinforced the need for continuous learning. The benets of playing, enjoying and eating were stressed and the students were urged to nd a balance. Mrs. Mamatha, Principal, RILS, gave a presentation on the activities of the year. The Chief Guest, Sri. K.Kalyan, added the creative dimension. Sri.K.Kalyan is a lyricist and music composer in Kannada cinema.

Popularly called as “Premakavi” (“Love Poet”) for his foot tapping music and inspiring lyrics on romance theme, he is considered to be one of the leading Music composer and lyricist of Kannada cinema. He is also known for his contribution in identifying and promoting budding talents. His contribution of 3000 lyrics ranging from folks, classical, western, fusions etc. and association with nearly 410 movies, 93 Tele serials and recipient to many prestigious awards put the event proceedings to a grand note. His professional association with legendary music directors like Hamsalekha, Illayaraja, A.R.Rahman, VijayaBhaskar, Rajan-Nagendra, Upendrakumar, AnuMallik, to name a few, was awe inspiring.

He along with the Advisory Board Member Mr. Ananth Ravi released the Quarterly Newsletter “Pratidhwani”.

International Study Tour - EuropeA dream trip to ve exotic locations in Europe: Paris, Germany, Switzerland, Venice and Vatican City will perhaps be remembered as most memorable by the 88 students and faculties. The ten-day trip from April 3 to April 13, 2018, started with breathless excitement and anticipation. The promise of a study tour coupled with the delights of foreign tourism locales was enriching and educative.

Factory Visit- Mercedes Benz

Riding on the positive sentiments were our team from RIMS. Paris, the Fashion Capital of the world, opened the vistas of scenic beauty, fashion streets and the wonder - Eiffel Tower. Even as Germany, the four time winners of the FIFA World Cup, rues its performance in FIFA World Cup 2018 and even though the economic growth is estimated to slow down in order to absorb the excess production (double jeopardy), our students visited the country to experience the aura. How best to start if not by visiting the iconic symbol of German Engineering, the automobile marque – Mercedez Benz. What followed was a series of memorable visits and it would be a travesty to narrate them as diary entries. Following is a reservoir of memories – dynamic and delightful.

Black Forest is a favorite cake for dessert lovers; imagine the surprise and delight of seeing Black Forest, a mountain range in Germany which derives its name because of the thick foliage of r and pine trees.

Switzerland, land of chocolates and watches, rich with melodious folk music and dance is featured in most Bollywood movies like a tourism video. A stop at the Rhine Falls, Mount Titlis, landscapes of Zurich, Lake Lucerne among the other locations added to the picturesque extravaganza.

An exception was the visit to the Lion Monument, or the Lion of Lucerne, as it’s popularly known. The monument built in memory of the swiss soldiers, massacred during the French Revolution, is

03

Page 6: 19th july prathidwani final05 - M S Ramaiah Foundation · Rotaract Club members organized Blood Donation Camps and engaged themselves in charitable works like distribution of old

metaphorically depicted in the rock carving of a wounded lion. The pathos it ignites is irrepressible.

Armani, Gucci, Benetton, Versace, Prada and Maa have one thing in common and that is Italy. History of colosseum and leaning tower of Pisa add to the riveting stories about the country, its culture and practices. Duomo di Milano (Milan Cathedral), second largest church in the world is a vision in its architectural splendor. Construction spanning six centuries, Milan Cathedral is an intriguing edice, incorporating innumerable styles. Our students were amazed at the singularity of purpose and the centuries of narrative inscribed into this world class structure.

Romancing Venice is no ordinary feat and the team did just that. The Shakespearean play – Merchant of Venice is all that most might connect about the city apart from the archipelago of 118 islands, formed by 177 canals, connected by 409 bridges. How can one then dismiss the treat of travelling in real time into the heart of this city like a fabled vagabond?

Venice

The reection in the water and in the mirror is not purely about the surface. Murano Glass Factory- Tour and Workshop was exciting after the Venice panorama. When in Rome, do as the Romans do may be clichéd but the historical signicance of Rome was learned by the team by doing what most visitors to Rome do.

One cannot settle for the second largest when the largest is ahead. The visit to St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome fullled this. This 4th Century AD structure is the burial site of Saint Peter. One is told inspiring stories about Michael Angelo – a sculptor who painted 5000 squares of Frescoes in four long years in the Sistine Chapel.

When one thinks of Gladiators one is reminded of the Roman Colosseum. The structure built by Emperor Vespasian to delight his people is now been paradoxically replaced by a new set of spectators who see the colosseum come alive in their minds, thanks to the countless cinematic portrayals of Roman empire.

A country of ethereal churches, the visit to Basilica of St. Paul was equally fascinating

BOOK REVIEWsThe Authors view on Innovation Reviewer Prof. Prasad Linganna

Innovation must become the central driving force for any business that wants to grow and succeed in both the short and long term

Innovation must be seen as the central foundation in the way businesses are run:Driving key decisions, Choosing goals, strategy, organization structure, resource al location, commitment to budgets or development of leadership, Innovation is the central job of every leader, The CEO as the Chief Innovation Officer

What did P&G do to innovate?Consumer is Boss – two moments of truth – when they buy the product & when they use the product Gathering innovation ideas from everywhere – employees, consumers, customers, suppliers, partners and competitors

Page 11: 19th july prathidwani final05 - M S Ramaiah Foundation · Rotaract Club members organized Blood Donation Camps and engaged themselves in charitable works like distribution of old

09

Innovation at the center of sustainable organic growth – sustainable innovation drives sustainable organic growth, Innovation factory, broadening the scope of innovation and risk mitigation

How Jeffrey Immelt made Innovation a way of life at GEThis section is my favourite for the simple reason that two accomplished leaders – Laey and Ram Charan, take the example of one of the greatest leaders the business world has seen in modern times – Jeffrey Immelt, the former CEO of GE, and quote how Jeffrey Immelt made innovation a way of life at GE.

The objective of this book review is to generate sufficient interest in the book and motivate the reader to pick up the book to read it. With this objective in mind, I have intentionally left out the crux of matter – the details of how P&G went about the business of innovation and in the process created 23 billion dollar brands. This is best experienced by the reader himself.

Truly, an amazing book – a must read for students of marketing, leadership, and strategy, or for that matter, anyone who is interested in setting up a successful business and sustain that success for a long time to come. Happy reading to all.

The Alchemists - Reviewer: Prof. Srinivas AshwathIt is said that we often give up on our dreams easily, and yet when we do, we somehow nd ways to fulll them, from what the world has in store for us.

One of Paulo Coelho’s remarkable work; a magical fable about following your dreams, not only narratescertain principles of philosophy, but also expresses how the journeys we take makes life we have and the consequences experienced through it.

We often neglect to admire the beautiful things around us. Paulo Coelho relates this in his story through the protagonist Santiago, a Sheppard Boy living in a place called Andalusia, a large autonomous region of hills, rivers and farmland bordering Spain’s southern coast. The boy notices the curtailed existence of his Sheep and how they fail to admire the beauty surrounding them. The boy’s parents too had incessantly toiled for the basics of life and repressed their own ambitions. Living in a beautiful place, which attracts tourists to its quaint villages and rolling hills, but for them it is not a place of dreams.

The story breaks open when Santiago goes into town one day to sell some of his ock and meets a tramp-king and a Gypsy woman who urge him to follow the

omens and leave the world he knows pointing him to the pyramids of Egypt where he would nd treasure. Santiago, being able to read and who loves travelling, frantically believes the gypsy woman’s words ‘When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it’. He sells his ock and heads towards the pyramids. While passing through a place called Tangier, a thief robs him of all his savings. His hard work and discipline was lost in no time in lieu for a little adventure. However, Santiago was not devastated as he was sure that he was on the right path to riches.

This belief is an excellent implication, to anyone embarking on an aspiration to achieve; The universe conspiring to give you what you want, could be an outcome of your determination to accomplish something. Santiago meets an old man in the town square and tells him about his journey, the old man says not to believe what the Gypsy woman had told and that you cannot control destiny. Santiago ascertains one can, as long as the ‘Omens’ are being read, which would be possible when you see the World as One. Understanding a book can be difficult as understanding the world, when you have a closed existence, complacent and unwilling to risk.

The book is signicant as a story of Persistence against all odds. The pursuit of Santiago’s dreams is central to the treasure he seeks, but when he falls in love, he is willing to give up on his dreams The Alchemist whom Santiago meets in the desert oasis tells him that the love of his woman will only be proved real if she is willing to support his search for treasure.

This can be construed as a conict of choices that Santiago is going through, which is more evident because we often see a relationship of love as the real meaning and purpose in our life. Only through devotion to the dream is the ‘soul of the world’ revealed to us, the knowledge that destroys loneliness and gives power. Voiced by the Alchemist himself – “When you want something, the whole universe conspires in helping you to achieve it” is the heart of this novel. From the very rst and throughout Santiago’s journey, the novel presents a whole host of reective values and beliefs. Does the boy eventually nd the hidden treasure? Where did he nd it? What was his reaction on discovering it? Did the signs work their magic?

The Alchemist should be read like a case study and enable the reader to draw conclusions and lessons to pursue their goals and fulll their purpose.

PITCH IT - Reviewer: Prof. K V SridharThe author narrates inspirational stories from the cricket dressing room and the corporate boardroom.Leadership : Humility and Modesty“Lives of great men all remind us we can make our lives sublime, and departing. Leave behind us, footprints on the sands of time” Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. The author starts with the following questions:1. Which cricketer and corporate leader do you consider as the greatest of all the times?2. What is their most important attribute? These questions were distributed to the audience in one of the discussions on the above.

More than 80% of the participants had written Sachin Tendulkar and JRD Tata.
