The Michigan Tech men’s tennis team will take on anew look in 2009 with five freshmen on the roster. Headcoach Mike Axford expects the rookies will give the squadbetter results as it tries to improve on a seventh-placefinished in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conferencea year ago.

The key word for for the 2009 Huskies is depth. Thereare now 10 players on the roster vying for the six spots in thelineup. Returning players who saw time towards the top ofthe starting six a year ago will need to work hard to keep aplace anywhere in the lineup.

The No. 1 singles position is the least likely to changefrom a year ago with Brett Girard returning for his seniorseason. The three-time All-GLIAC Second Team selection hasplayed all of his 60 career singles matches at No. 1. He wasnamed the Verdie Cox Award winner as the team’s mostvaluable player for the third straight time last year and is onthe verge of moving into the top five for wins at No. 1 singlesat Michigan Tech.

Brandon Ellefson and Alan Parenteau are two otherseniors on Tech’s 2009 roster. Ellefson played No. 2 singles ayear ago while Parenteau played No. 3. The pair bring acombined 119 matches of collegiate experience into theseason, but will have to battle to stay in the top three.

Two other players return to the team after completingtheir first collegiate seasons a year ago. Sophomore ChrisVerhulst utilized his quickness to earn the No. 4 singlesposition a year ago. Junior Tim Viola is a big, athletic playerwho gained valuable experience in his first year ofcompetitive tennis a year ago. He was a regular in thedoubles lineup en route to earning the team’s most improvedplayer award.

Of the five rookies, two have a real opportunity to standout — Anders Sandholm from Duluth, Minn., and DouglasYossida of Brazil. Both bring in the talent to impact the top ofTech’s lineup immediately. Sandholm played at a high level inhigh school. Yossida will have to convert his style from clay tohardcourt surface, but possesses very good quicknessaround the court.

Tech’s other three freshmen — Kyle Ahonen (GreenBay, Wis.), Ryan Koll (Rice, Minn.) and Jeremy Strandberg(Jennison, Mich.) are all capable of breaking into the lineupas their games rise to the collegiate level.

Overall, Michigan Tech has its sights set on finishing inthe top half of the GLIAC. A top five finish would put theHuskies on the cusp of the program’s first-ever NCAATournament berth.

We prepare students to create the future.Michigan Tech is a nationally prominent and internationally

recognized technological university. We are dedicated toeducating our students to be the best. In today’s world, thismeans having the knowledge and ability to develop, understand, apply, manage, and communicate science and technology.

Our 7,000 students choose from more than 120 programs, leading to associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s and/or doctoraldegrees in arts and social sciences, business and economics, computing, engineering, forest resources and environmentalsciences, sciences, and technology.

Our location, in the heart of Upper Michigan’s scenicKeweenaw Peninsula, offers unparalleled opportunities foroutdoor recreation and adventure. Our campus overlooks thePortage Canal, a long, winding ribbon of water that connects justa few miles away at either end to Lake Superior. DowntownHoughton features coffee shops, theaters, restaurants, and storesjust a short walk from campus.

HighlightsMichigan Tech is placed among the “Top 100 Values” of all

universities by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance Magazine. Twenty-five percent of incoming students ranked in the top 10 percent oftheir high school graduating class.

We have a 12:1 student-faculty ratio, and our newly renovatedJ. R. Van Pelt Library is equipped with state-of-the-arttechnologies, including an electronic information center with thelatest campus and world news, and 22 small-group study rooms. The facility’s number of full-text online journals has increased200 percent in three years.

Our Career Center offers eRecruiting to connect employers andstudents. Last year, about 4,000 jobs were posted and resumes of Techstudents were viewed by potential employers for each one. In addition, nearly 250 employers came to campus to interview Tech students. It’sno wonder then that Michigan Tech graduates averaged six jobinterviews, and 95 percent of reporting graduates were employed, enrolled in graduate school, or in military service within six months aftergraduation last year.

Campus Life and SportsThere are more than 150 student groups on campus, including

academic, ethnic, cultural, social fraternities/sororities, studentgovernment, honor society, media, religious, service, and specialinterests, as well as nearly 60 intramural and club sports. Last year, over70 percent of students participated in intramural sports.

Michigan Tech sponsors varsity programs in 13 sports. Our men’s icehockey team competes in the top-notch NCAA Division I WesternCollegiate Hockey Association. The other 12 teams — men’s football, women’s volleyball, and men’s and women’s squads in basketball, cross country, tennis, Nordic skiing, and track and field — are allcompetitive at the NCAA Division II level.

Michigan Tech has its own downhill ski hill and cross country skitrails, as well as an 18-hole golf course. We served as the host of theU.S. Cross Country Skiing Championships last January and will do soagain in 2008. The Michigan Tech Nordic Training Center also served asthe host of the 2006 Cross Country Skiing Junior Olympics.

Our incredible Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts is home to a line-up of national theatrical touring companies, comedians, country andpopular music artists, symphony orchestras, chamber groups, andmore. There are also nine musical groups on campus to join — fromGospel Choir to Symphony Orchestra to the Pep Band.

Annual Traditions• K-Day—Everyone takes the afternoon off to enjoy McLain State Parkon the shores of Lake Superior, the world’s largest freshwater lake. There’s food, Frisbee, music, skydivers, Medieval jousting, studentgroup information, and, for some, swimming in the greatest Great Lake.• Parade of Nations—It’s a celebration of all the nations of the worldwho have students, faculty, and staff at Michigan Tech. It ends with agreat ethnic food festival.• Homecoming—We put a different slant on the usual collegeexperience: students dress in their worst attire and parade throughcampus in autos that barely run! There’s a Hobo Mixer, competitionsbetween campus organizations, and various special events allweekend. It all culminates with a Saturday afternoon football game atbeautiful Sherman Field.• Winter Carnival—It’s the longest-running and largest annual collegewinter festival. Massive snow statues emerge on campus and in town.Skits, queen competitions, first-class entertainment, touristseverywhere, and the best in college hockey make this our greatestevent!• Spring Fling—Before hitting the books one more time for finals, students take a break on the campus mall and celebrate the sun! Thereare games; food booths; rock, jazz, and country bands; sportscompetitions; and more.

Mike Axford, who was the 2007 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coach ofthe Year, is in his 21th season guiding the Huskies. He was appointed to the position in Augustof 1989 and is the fourth head coach since the sport’s inception at Michigan Tech in 1975.

Axford, the all-time winningest women’s tennis coach in school history, led Tech to a fifth-place finish in the GLIAC a year ago. In 2004, the Huskies defeated Mercyhurst, 5-4, in the firstround to claim the school’s first-ever NCAA Tournament win. Axford was also named the GreatLakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1990.

In addition to his duties as women’s head coach, Axford serves as the men’s tennis coach— a position he has held since 1987.

A 1983 graduate of Michigan Tech, Axford was a prep standout in both track and crosscountry at Melvindale (Mich.) High School, earning letters in both sports for three consecutive years.

Born June 13, 1960, Axford is an instructor at the University along with his duties as men’s and women’s tenniscoach. He is single and resides in Hancock, Mich.

The outlook for Michigan Tech’s 2009-10 women’s tennisseason looks bright. Despite the loss of two seniors who com-bined for 92 career wins, the Huskies hope to finish in the topthree of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Thereasons for optimism: the return of Victoria Zhilkina who went10-1 at No. 1 singles a year ago before missing the remainder ofthe year with injury, the addition of the NCAA Division III nationalsingles runner-up, Ploy Suthijindawong (a transfer from St.Scholastica), and the return of four others with a year morematch experience.

Zhilkina and Suthijindawong will likely compete for the No. 1singles job. Zhilkina posted a 10-1 singles record at No. 1 and12-0 doubles slate at No. 2 in 2008, but did not take part in thespring half of the season because of injury. The St. Petersburg,Russia, native looks to be back at 100 percent and should bene-fit from having had a year to adjust to collegiate tennis.

Suthijindawong brings in an impressive resume whichincludes All-America honors as the DIII national runner-up and a27-3 overall singles record as a freshman. The now-sophomorefrom Thailand should step in to the top of the lineup and tremen-dously help the Huskies’ depth by allowing teammates to playdown a spot.

A pair of juniors will vie for the No. 3 singles position.Nathalia Rondelli posted a team-high 17 singles wins a year ago,

with a majority of those coming at No. 2. Asel Otunchieva accu-mulated a 15-7 singles slate in 2008-09 with an 8-2 record atNo. 3. Both were successful in doubles. Rondelli paired with now-departed Silvia Oliveros for a 14-8 mark at No. 1. Otunchieva won20 of doubles 22 matches with several different partners.

The two other players returning to the team are seniorDanielle Stoll and sophomore Caitlin Hartley. Stoll split time at No.5 and No. 6 singles a year ago in putting together a 7-14 record.Hartley was 4-6 at No. 6. Both have made big strides over the lastyear and will look to remain in the lineup.

Three rookies round out the roster. Kira Eck is from Arvada,Colo., and Jackie Kukulski (Grand Haven) and Chelsea Uganski(Muskegon) are both from western lower Michigan. All three willvie for playing time.

The Huskies will need to be sharp immediately with no othermatches prior to a Sept. 12 date with GLIAC foe Saginaw ValleyState. The fall schedule contains only league dual matches, theITA singles and doubles tournament and the GLIAC Tournament.

With a strong lineup, especially at the top, Michigan Tech’sfirst top-three finish in the GLIAC since 1995 could become areality.
