WHAT IS A CHANTICLEER?WHAT IS A CHANTICLEER? The Chanticleer (SHON-ti-cleer) gives Coastal Carolina University one of the most unique nicknames in all of sports. Chanticleer comes from Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales and came to Coastal Carolina University when the University was a member of the University of South Carolina system. A Chanticleer is a rooster who rules the barnyard with cunning and wit. His competitiveness never wanes as he battles to the end, using his brains to come out on top every time.

COACH’S CORNERCOACH’S CORNER

WHAT ARE THE GENERAL GOALS AND EXPECTATIONS FOR THE SEASON?In a word, COMPETING. With a schedule that pits us (non-confer-ence) against some top teams, we’re not going to look at our record as closely as we look at our ability to improve, our development, and how well we competed. Of course, we always want to and will prepare to win, but there’s a lot of ground to cover with this squad in a transition year and it will take time.

WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE TEAM’S STRENGTHS ENTERING THE SEASON?This is a motivated and driven group of players that are led by fi ve seniors who are determined to make substantial strides as a team. That attitude and competitive fi re is the team’s greatest strength at the moment.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR CONCERNS ENTERING THE SEASON?We’re young and we have limited depth in certain positions. Our learning curve and team health will weigh heavily on how we fair this season.

TALK ABOUT YOUR APPROACH TO SCHED-ULING NON-CONFERENCE OPPONENTS:We aim high. We schedule oppo-nents that will prepare us for the top

of conference play. We schedule top teams that have been in the National tournament, or are in SEC/ACC and see where we’re at early and often. When you start beat-ing quality competition, you know you’re ready for conference.

WHAT ARE YOU THOUGHTS ON THE SCHEDULE?We come out of the gate taking on tough teams…and it never stops. We open up with an SEC/ACC weekend only to take on several SoCon opponents and UNCW (who was in the NCAA tournament last season). There isn’t an easy week-end in the non-conference seg-ment.

WHAT DO YOU ANTICIPATE IN TERMS OF THE BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE RACE?Again, depending on our team health, we hope to contend at the top. There are some strong oppo-nents who stand in the way of being number one, and my hope is our non-conference schedule will pre-pare us for them. We’ll be competi-tive with every team in this league.

WHAT TYPE OF CHARACTERISTICS DO YOU LOOK FOR IN A RECRUIT?Beyond the norm (talent, athleti-cism, soccer brain)…the biggest intangible is a true competitor. It’s an attitude that is diffi cult to teach if a player doesn’t come in hungry.

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON SYSTEM OF PLAY AND HOW THE PLAYERS YOU HAVE AFFECT THAT SYSTEM?Personally I feel that a system only works if the players on the fi eld work. All systems have strengths/weaknesses. But all can succeed if your team is willing to put in the work it requires. We play teams differently at times, but we play whatever is necessary to give our player personnel the best chance to

win. I don’t get overly hung up on a particular system

OUTSIDE OF THE SOCCER EXPERIENCE, WHAT DO YOU FIND SPECIAL ABOUT THE COASTAL CAROLINA COLLEGIATE EXPERI-ENCE? There’s a buzz around Coastal Athletics and it’s infectious. It’s no secret that we have a lot to offer our student athletes…and ALL of them come in with the opportunity to become Champions over their four years here. But the most spe-cial component are the people you get to work with…everyone in ath-letics from administration to players are simply tremendous people. It’s a big family here and we hope more players want to become a part of it.

HEAD COACH TAMMY DECESAREHEAD COACH TAMMY DECESARE

Tammy DeCesare is in her fi rst year as the head women’s soccer coach at Coastal Carolina University, taking over in January 2010.

“We are thrilled to bring in a coach the caliber of Tammy to Coastal Carolina University,” Athletic Director HunterYurachek said. “She has shown the ability to mold a team into a force within her league, as well as bringing a great knowledge of the Carolinas in her recruiting work. With her experience as both a player and a coach, she is someone who we believe will elevate our wom-en’s soccer program to the top of the Big South Conference, both athletically and academically, for many years to come.”

“I am extremely excited about this opportunity at Coastal Carolina University,” DeCesare said. “The academic excellence, athletic traditions and campus location are all factors that make Coastal a school of potential and promise. The women’s soccer program has had champion-ship level success in the past and I’m excited to become a part of it. I would also like to thank Western Carolina University for the wonderful experiences I’ve had and for the opportunity to lead that women’s soccer program.”

DeCesare comes to Conway from Western Carolina University, where she had compiled a 58-36-13 mark in fi ve seasons as head coach, including fi ve consecutive winning seasons, the 2005 and 2008 Southern Conference Champion-ships and the league’s 2005 and 2008 berth to the NCAA Championship. In an environment that is intense but family oriented, DeCesare promotes both academic and athletic excellence, as her teams were also recognized nationally for their academic prowess by receiving the Team Academic Award from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) all fi ve years.

Last season, the Catamounts put together another winning season, going 8-6-5 and 5-3-3 in the SoCon. The squad also earned the NSCAA Team Academic Award, while having 12 student-athletes named to the Southern Confer-ence All-Academic team for the fall semester.

In 2008, the Catamounts made their second NCAA appearance after posting two penalty-kick wins in three tournament contests, including a PK victory over top-seeded UNC Greensboro in the SoCon Championship. They also posted a 9-2-0 conference record, the best in Western Carolina’s 11-year history, along with their third-ever ranking in the Soccer Buzz post-season Regional Poll. Academically, the squad boasted a SoCon-best 3.39 GPA.

During the 2006 and 2007 seasons, DeCesare-led teams continued to shine, garnering top 20 regional preseason rankings and compet-ing against nationally and regionally ranked non-conference opponents such as Nebraska, Clemson, Duke, Wyoming, NC State and East Carolina. Western Carolina was ranked in the top ten nationally in cumulative team GPA boasting cumulative GPA’s of 3.61 and 3.53 respectively in those two seasons.

In her fi rst season at Western Carolina, the 2005 DeCesare-led squad set a multitude of school records, as well as the best turnaround in the entire NCAA during the season. They achieved a school-record 18 wins, with13 of those being shutouts. Seeded fourth after the regular sea-son, The Catamounts earned the school’s fi rst ever Southern Conference tournament title, be-coming the lowest seed to ever win the SoCon women’s soccer championship. DeCesare led the Catamounts in their fi rst-ever appearance in the NCAA College Cup Championship, facing 17-time National Champion, North Carolina. For her efforts, DeCesare was recognized by Soccer Buzz as the Regional Runner-Up Coach of the Year for the Southeast following the 2005 season.

DeCesare was an assistant coach at UNC Wilmington for six seasons underneath Paul Cairney prior to her stint at Western Carolina. She hepled the Seahawks to a 59-50-5 overall record as well as the team being was recognized for three consecutive seasons with the NSCAA Team Academic Award. DeCesare earned her Masters of Education from UNCW in 2002, com-pleting the program with a 4.0 GPA. In addition to her collegiate endeavors, DeCesare was very active in youth soccer in the Wilmington com-munity, coaching with Cape Fear Youth Soccer and the Port City Storm Soccer Club.

DeCesare helped Catawba College become a nationally-ranked program as a four-year starter for the Indians. She helped Catawba capture a pair of South Atlantic Conference (SAC) Tournament titles and a SAC regular-season conference championship during her playing career. Serving as team captain, she earned All-Conference honors during her senior campaign. Additionally, DeCesare also played basketball at Catawba, duplicating her efforts as team captain for the Indians’ hoops squad and helping lead them to the NCAA Division II National Tourna-ment. Upon her graduation in 1996, DeCesare played two years of semiprofessional women’s soccer for both the Hampton Roads (Va.) Piranhas and the Carolina Speed of the United States Interregional Soccer League (USISL).

DeCesare is also involved in the development of youth soccer with both the North Carolina and Region III Olympic Development Program for the last eight and six years, respectively. With one of her recent NC ODP teams, she coached several All-Region team players and three Na-tional Pool/Team selections in their respective age groups. BIG SOUTH CONFERENCEBIG SOUTH CONFERENCE

GEORGE F. “BUDDY” SASSER CUPCoastal Carolina University won the prestigious George F.

“Buddy” Sasser Cup for a record-setting ninth time in 2006-07. The Sasser Cup, named for the former Coastal Carolina Athletic Director and Big South Commissioner, honors the top overall athletic department in the Big South Conference. The award is based on a point system, with points being awarded based upon each school’s fi nish in each of the 18 league-sponsored sports. T h e C h a n t i c l e e r s ’ n i n e Sasser Cup awards are the most earned by one school in Big South history. Coastal won the 2006-07 award by capturing Big South titles in football, women’s indoor track, men’s golf, women’s tennis (tournament) and baseball (regular-season and tournament). In addition to the Big South honors, Coastal Carolina was represented in six diff erent NCAA Championships.

The League also had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the

country, has had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball

team three consecutive years as well as the national men’s

basketball scoring leader twice, received an at-large playoff

berth in the Football Championship Subdivision in 2006,

and had an institution fi nish fi fth in the NCAA Men’s Golf

Championships – the Conference’s highest-ever team fi nish

in an NCAA event.

In 2006-07 alone, the Big South was the only Conference

nationwide to have an at-large participant in the football

playoff s (Coastal Carolina), a team in the Second Round of

the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a

No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina).

In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1

seed three out of the last fi ve years, while its FCS playoff berth

in 2006 came in just the fi fth-year of the Big South’s football

existence.

The Conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through

Athletics” was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the

Conference’s 25th Anniversary. The League also honored

its heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in

League history from 1983-2008, with Liberty University’s 10-

year women’s basketball championship run from 1996-2007

being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s fi rst 25

years. The Conference’s on-fi eld accomplishments have been

duplicated in the classroom. Annually, more than 40 percent

of Conference student-athletes are named to the Big South’s

Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative 3.0

grade-point average, and the League has had more than 95

Academic All-Americans in its quarter-century of existence.

Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has

matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively

pursuing excellence on the fi eld of play and in the classroom.

The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic

conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on the

national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships,

increased television packages, and quality athletic competition

while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social,

athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete.

This has evolved into the Conference’s mission of “Developing

Leaders Through Athletics.”

The Big South Conference was formed on August 21,

1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College)

Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President

George Christenberry began recruiting members into the

Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta,

Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and

Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was

selected as the League’s fi rst Commissioner and continued

to solicit new members. His eff orts led to the additions of

Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big

South more than the required six members to constitute an

offi cial conference. The Big South’s fi rst year of competition

was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South

Conference was granted full-fl edged NCAA Division I status.

During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids

to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in

earning at-large berths in several national postseason events,

including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf.

In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr.

Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990, the League received

its fi rst automatic bid – receiving an automatic qualifi er to the

NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of

leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations

and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever

men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South

competing among some of the fi nest teams in the nation.

In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the

League’s third Commissioner, and in his 13 years at the helm of

the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively

promoting the Conference to new levels. The Conference has

enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during the past

several years. Kallander has brought television coverage to

Big South women’s basketball, baseball and softball for the

fi rst time in Conference history, as well as increased national

television exposure to the League as a whole through

aggressive and unique television packages.

Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed

and initiated its fi rst long-range strategic plan, re-affi rming

the League’s vision as a distinctive athletic Conference

committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic

competition. He also spearheaded the eff orts to add football

as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and

has solidifi ed Conference membership with the additions

of High Point, Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian, and in

2011-12, the return of charter member Campbell University.

Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological

advancements, as the Conference introduced its fi rst live

event video streaming in 2005 and has since expanded its

video off erings to more than 600 events annually through

a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the

creation of several online and social media platforms.

In the last 15 years alone, the Big South Conference has

experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every

sport. During this time, the Conference has had two individual

National Champions, more than 200 All-Americans, has

reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball

and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in men’s

soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s

outdoor track & fi eld, and men’s golf and had an individual

selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship four times

in addition to the fi rst men’s tennis doubles at-large selection.
