After the departure of two All-Americans and the all-time leader in kills, the Vulcans featured a fresh look with a talented, versatile and inexperienced team in 2010. Cal U will again display a new look this campaign with first-year head coach Peter Letourneau inheriting a program that has three of the last four PSAC Championships and reached the NCAA Atlantic Regional Championship five-straight years. Letourneau is accustomed to success as a coach, having led Frostburg State, an NCAA Division III program, to four-consecutive conference titles and NCAA Tournament appearances. He led the Bobcats to over 90 wins in his last three seasons and will now guide Cal U, who is just a year removed from three-straight appearances in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament. The Vulcans return six juniors and three seniors in 2011, losing only one starter from a team that finished 23-13 overall and featured only two seniors. Junior Meghan Franz headlines the group of returning players. The 5-11 middle hitter developed into one of the top players in the PSAC and the region last year after leading the team in kills, blocks and hitting percentage. She was an All-PSAC West First-Team and AVCA all-region selection last year after being the only freshman starter on the 2009 team which won a third-straight PSAC Championship. The junior trio of Kelly Fromknecht, Brandy Harris and Chelsea Wilson all established themselves as valuable contributors after playing sparingly during the 2009 season. Fromknecht proved to be one of the most versatile players for the Vulcans. She finished second on the team in kills, while ranking third in blocks and nearly adding 100 digs. Fromknecht earned All-PSAC West laurels and received AVCA all-region honorable mention in her first year as a starter.

Wilson finished second on the team behind only Franz in both hitting percentage and blocks. She ended the season ranked among the PSAC leaders in hitting percentage, while Harris was third on the team with nearly 300 kills. Redshirt junior middle hitter Bridget Bielich returns after playing only six matches last season due to injury. In her first two years with the program, she was an All-PSAC West selection each season and key starter on back-to-back NCAA regional championship teams. Cal U will feature additional strength on the outside and at the net after senior Katya Kopanarova and sophomore Molly Delaney each saw significant action last year. Kopanarova totaled over 200 kills and collected nearly 200 digs after transferring from Casper (Wyo.) and Delaney was a key player in the postseason as a true freshman. Junior Ana Almeida and sophomore Gaby Follmer will also provide depth at the net. Almeida has appeared in 43 matches over the last two seasons and Follmer gained experience as a true freshman. Defensively, the Vulcans graduated a two-year starter at libero, but return senior defensive specialist Sara McMullen. In just over two seasons, she has tallied over 650 digs and nearly 125 service aces. Last year, she was the only player to appear in every match and ranked fifth in the league with 60 aces, the second-highest total in school history. Following the loss of a three-time All-American, Cal U used three different players at setter last season. Senior Kortney Eshleman was the primary setter and tallied nearly 1,000 assists after seeing significant time due to injury in 2009. Sophomore Abbey Freund and Fromknecht also played at setter last season and combined for almost 450 assists.

After a successful tenure as the head coach at Frostburg State, Peter Letourneau enters his first season as the head coach at Cal U in 2011. Letourneau, who was hired in March, inherits a program that has won three of the last four PSAC Championships and reached the Round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament in each of the last five years. He served as head coach at Frostburg State, a NCAA Division III program in Frostburg, Md., for six years. He also was an assistant volleyball coach at Rutgers in 2004. While at Frostburg State, Letourneau posted a 145-60 record (.707) with 93 wins over the last three seasons. He led the Bobcats to four-straight conference tournament titles as a member of both the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) and Capital Athletic Conference (CAC). Frostburg State also made the NCAA Tournament in each of the last four years and advanced to the regional championship for the first time in school history in 2010. After leading the program to its

first 30-win season since 2004, he was named the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Mid-Atlantic Coach of the Year in 2009. The following year, Letourneau received CAC Coach of the Year honors after Frostburg State went 34-4 behind the play of CAC Player of the Year and Academic All-American Sarah Stephens. Letourneau served as the top assistant and recruiting coordinator at Rutgers in 2004 and helped the Scarlet Knights post a 16-10 overall record, which featured a nine-match road winning streak and an upset of eventual conference runner-up Pittsburgh. Prior to his stint at Rutgers, he served as the head coach of both the men’s and women’s volleyball programs at Stevenson, a Division III program in Owings Mills, Md., from 2001-03. Before Stevenson, Letourneau coached the Time Out Junior Olympic Volleyball Club. He has also coached at numerous camps over his career,

including the Gold Medal Squared Volleyball Camp and UNC Volleyball Camp. Letourneau gained valuable experience during his playing career. Over his six-year stint with the United States Air Force (1992-98), he was selected to the All-Services Volleyball Team and the All-Air Force Team (1994-95). He also played on the Florida Pro-Beach Volleyball Tour (1990-92) and began his playing career at East Stroudsburg University in 1989. Letourneau, who graduated from Towson (Md.) in 2003, and his wife Barbara have a son, Nathaniel.

Barbara Letourneau enters her first season as the assistant volleyball coach at Cal U in 2011 after serving six seasons in the same role at NCAA Division III Frostburg State (Md.). While she was at Frostburg State, the program won 144 matches and went an impressive 48-6 in conference action. In six seasons, Letourneau helped lead the Bobcats to five Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Tournaments, three AMCC Tournament titles, one Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Championship and four NCAA Tournament appearances.

In 2010, Frostburg State set the school record for wins in a season as it finished 34-4 with a perfect 8-0 mark in its first season in the CAC, and advanced to the NCAA Regional Championship for the first time. Prior to Frostburg State, Letourneau taught and coached at Dunbar High School in Baltimore. As the head coach in 2004, she guided the Poets to a state regional championship and a 14-2 record. The native of Brazil also spent three years as an assistant coach at Stevenson University (formerly Villa Julie College) in Owings Mills, Md., and three years with the Time Out Volleyball Club in Baltimore.

Before moving to the United States, Letourneau played for the Minas Tenis Clube in her hometown of Belo Horizonte, Brazil, from the ages of 11-16, winning two city championships in that time. Additionally, she served as a captain for Colegio Monte Calvario from 1985-87 and for Colegio Arnaldo from 1988-90. A 1999 graduate of Towson (Md.), Letourneau completed her master’s degree in human performance in 2007 from Frostburg State. She and her husband Peter have a son, Nathaniel.

The institute serves as a resource center for education majors, and assists school districts and local organizations in advancing character development.

For 10-straight semesters, Cal U athletic programs have compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher.

Last year, the Vulcans made 11 team and 11 individual appearances in NCAA postseason play.

A total of 225 Cal U student-athletes, representing all sports were named to the Spring 2011 edition of the Cal U Athletic Director Honor Roll after a record 240 athletes earned the honor for the Fall 2010 semester.

A combined 155 student-athletes from Cal U, representing all sports, were named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Scholar-Athletes for the 2010-11 academic year.

The Vulcans featured 12 Capital One Academic All-District selections during the 2010-11 academic year.

SEASON REVIEW On a team featuring only two seniors, the Cal U volleyball team posted a seventh-consecutive 20-win season, finishing 2010 with a 23-13 overall record and a 15-4 mark in PSAC play. The Vulcans also advanced to the NCAA Atlantic Regional Championship match for a fifth-consecutive season. Sophomore middle hitter Meghan Franz received a number of awards and honors after leading the team in kills (307), blocks (136) and hitting percentage (.301). The AVCA named Franz All-Atlantic Region to go along with her All-PSAC West First-Team and Atlantic Region All-Tournament Team laurels. In addition, she was named to the Daktronics Atlantic All-Region and ESPN Academic All-District Second-Teams

Sophomore Kelly Fromknecht earned All-PSAC West Second-Team laurels as well as being named AVCA All-Atlantic Region Honorable Mention. The dual-threat sophomore ranked second on the team with 293 kills to go along with a .287 hitting percentage as a right-side hitter. She also contributed 224 assists

while also spending time at setter. Senior libero Julie Paronish posted a team-high 507 digs and finished her career with 1,429, the fourth-best career mark in school history. Under third-year head coach Stephanie Burner, the Vulcans had five differ-ent players post more than 200 kills, three different players with more than 200 assists and three players add more than 200 digs.

Originating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. Among its recent enhancements the PSAC has expanded its membership twice during a four-year span. The first occurred during the 2008-09 academic year with the addition of full-time members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. Over the past year, the PSAC’s Board of Directors agreed to welcome Seton Hill University as an associate member to begin play in field hockey during the 2011-12 campaign. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the two associate members. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: The largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly one-third of its teams into

NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership’s success has yielded 43 NCAA team and 246 individual title winners. While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Today, nearly one-third of the PSAC’s

estimated 6,300 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a grade-point average of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly

doubled since PSAC Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid-1990s.

Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, seven league schools also compete at the Division

I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 127,000 students and claim over 710,000 alumni, including 483,000

who reside in Pennsylvania. The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16 member institutions. It employs a commissioner, an associate and assistant commissioner, and a director of media relations at its headquarters in Lock Haven, Pa.

The California University of Pennsylvania women’s volleyball team has been a dominating force over the last two decades in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region. The Vulcans have captured four Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West titles, six PSAC titles, made nine NCAA Tournament appearances and won three NCAA regional titles. This success has bred a winning attitude amongst not only the members of the volleyball program, but the Vulcan faithful as well. It is now expected that the Cal U women’s volleyball team will be top contenders not only in conference play, but at the national level as well. However this success goes back further than the early 1990’s. Dating back to the late 1970’s, the Vulcan’s volleyball program was beginning to take form. Since the program was just starting, there was less emphasis put on it from a university support level. The matches were played in Herron Hall and no statistics were kept at this time; however this did not disrupt the success of the program. Each year, the Vulcans were able to remain competitive against area colleges and universities. In the 1983 season, Cal U captured the Pennwood West Tournament Championship with a 5-0 record behind the likes of Barb Pakan, Ellen Ward, Denise Hearn and Rita Gohn. Then-head coach Donna Johnson was building the foundation and beginning the development of the Cal U volleyball program from its roots. At the start of the 1990 season, a new chapter for Cal U Volleyball began. Statistics started to be kept and an emphasis was put on the program by both athletic and university administration. This change in attitude has made Cal U volleyball one of the PSAC’s elite programs. The Vulcans won back-to-back titles in 1991 and 1992. In just four seasons, coach Jing Pu totaled 86 victories, by winning over 73 percent of his matches. After his departure following the 1992 season, Karen Fetsko-Hjerpe steadied the Vulcan program for the next five years with a .556 winning percentage. After Hjerpe moved into an administrative role at Cal U following the 1997 season, Limin Jin took over for the next four seasons and guided the Vulcans to their first

NCAA Tournament appearance. This tradition of success carried over to Melissa Myers when she came on board in 2002 as the head coach. In her six years at Cal U, Myers led her team to five NCAA T o u r n a m e n t s and recruited and coached some of the most decorated players in program history. When Myers accepted a head-coaching position

at an NCAA Division I program, Stephanie Burner took over the reigns of the program and continued where Myers left off by winning both the PSAC Championship and Atlantic Region titles in her first two years on the bench. The 2011 season will be under new direction from head coach Peter Letourneau. Even though a new face may be leading the program, the rich tradition will surely continue for many years to come. Since 1991, the Vulcan volleyball program has produced 57 all-conference selections, two PSAC West Athletes of the Year, 29 AVCA All-Region selections and four AVCA All Americans. This kind of success has been unparalleled by any other university in the PSAC. Leading this group of stellar student-athletes was the trio of Joanna Nist, Renata da Silva, and Dingding Lu. Nist, a three-time Daktronics Regional Player of the Year from 2007-09, was a steady performer her entire four-year career in a Vulcan uniform setting records for career kills (1,897), service aces (180), and games played (519). da Silva, a three-time, AVCA A l l - A m e r i c a n , set the all-time school record for assists with 5,507 and is second in games played behind Nist with 497. In addition

to these three stellar student-athletes, Katie Barker and Ludmila Amaral played vital roles in building the success of the Vulcan volleyball program. Barker, a standout middle hitter, dominated the net from 2002-2005. She holds the single-season record for kills with 641 and previously held the record for single-season digs with 538. Amaral, a junior college transfer, made the best out of her two seasons at Cal U by earning second-team All-America honors after the 2008 season. Lu (2000-03) finished her career with several school records, including 463 career blocks. The volleyball program at Cal U has turned into one of the nation’s elite at the Division II level. With the support from both the athletic and university administration, and the desire to be successful both on and off the court from our student-athletes, the rich tradition will continue well into the future.

The Vulcans set a school record for wins and led NCAA Division II with a 40-2 overall recordin 2008, winning both the PSAC and NCAA Atlantic Regional Championships at Hamer Hall.

Renata da Silva was a three-time AVCA All-American and helped lead the Vulcansto three-straight PSAC and NCAA Atlantic Regional Championships.

Dingding Lu was inducted into the Cal U Hall of Fame

in 2010.

On May 19, 1992, Dr. Angelo Armenti, Jr. was appointed by the Board of Governors of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education as the sixth president of California University of Pennsylvania, founded in 1852.

He holds a B.S. degree in Physics from Villanova University, and MA and Ph.D. degrees from Temple University in special and general relativity, respectively. He had a distinguished 20-year career at Villanova University prior to becoming president of California University. At Villanova he served as professor of physics, chair of the department of physics, Dean of University College, and Director of Planning.

In addition to scholarly publications in scientific journals, Dr. Armenti received

the Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1978, and was named an American Council on Education (ACE) Fellow in 1992, one of only thirty-two individuals selected nationally for this recognition. His book, The Physics of Sports, commissioned by the American Institute of Physics, remains in print since its initial publication in 1992. Since Dr. Armenti’s arrival at California University in 1992, applications have increased by 90%; average SATs have increased by 113 points; FTE enrollments have increased by 43%; and four-year graduation rates have increased by 94%. Many new academic programs have been initiated including: Master of Social Work (MSW); Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT); Master of Science in Multi-Media Technology; Physical Therapy Assistant; Sports Management; Graphic Design, Computer Engineering Technology, Criminal Justice, Legal Studies, Music Technology and Nursing Administration. Other University accomplishments since his arrival as president include: creation of an Athletic Hall of Fame; winning the Dixon Trophy as well as three National championships (two in women’s softball and one in women’s basketball); a successfully completed $13 million (first ever) capital campaign; a second capital campaign that is currently on schedule to reach its $35 million goal; a twenty-fold increase in endowment funds; the adoption by the University of the core values of Integrity, Civility, and Responsibility; the adoption of a University Bill of Rights and Responsibilities; the creation of the University Forum—a new governance structure; adoption of a new general education curriculum; implementation of a $200 million master plan, including: the building of the Eberly Science and Technology Center, the Kara Alumni House, the Duda Classroom Building, a 6,000 seat Convocation Center, and six modern new residence halls; the renovation or expansion of numerous other buildings on campus; and the creation of Global Online, the University’s internet-based outreach to some 2,000 students from around the world. Dr. Armenti has been active with the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, and has served as Campaign Chair and President of the Mon Valley United Way. In 2001 he became a Certified Covey Trainer on The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. He is a member of the board of directors of the Washington County Redevelopment Authority, a member of the board of directors of the Greater Pittsburgh council of Boy Scouts of America, and Chair of the Commission of Presidents of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. He is married to the former Barbara Malinowski and, together, they have five grown children and nine grandchildren. His avocations include piano, photography and sailing.

Welcome to California University of Pennsylvania and another exciting season of Vulcan volleyball. I am confident that Coach Peter Letourneau, his staff and the players will continue to build upon the volleyball tradition and make this a year to remember. This was a year of remarkable achievements at Cal U. In the past 12 months our academic offerings have been strengthened and expanded. Our beautiful campus continues to evolve, and our enrollment continues to grow. Our athletic teams won statewide and regional titles. Cal U finished in the Top 15 in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings for an impressive fourth-consecutive year. During the 2009-10 academic year Cal U’s second place- finish was the highest by a PSAC school since the Directors’ Cup was initiated prior to the 1995-96 academic year. We are very proud of our student-athletes, coaches and many individuals behind the scenes who are responsible for this magnificent accomplishment. I am particularly proud of our student-athletes who perform well not only on the field of play, but also in the classroom. During the 2010-11 academic year, a total of 225 California University of Pennsylvania student-athletes, representing all sports, were named to the Spring 2011 edition of the Vulcan Athletic Director Honor Roll after a record 245 student-athletes earned the honor during the Fall 2010 semester. For the 10th-consecutive semester, the Cal U athletic programs compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher. In addition, a combined 155 student-athletes from Cal U representing all sports (fall, winter and spring) were named PSAC Scholar-Athletes for the 2010-11 academic year. Our athletes have put in hundreds of hours of practice, and their hard work and dedication make them winners regardless of the score. The same can be said of the coaching staff, whose devotion to their sport and their players is an inspiration. The mission of Cal U is to build character and build careers. While the formal part of the education occurs in classrooms, laboratories and internship sites, the other part of a college education takes place in residence halls, the Natali Student Union and in various sport venues, such as Hamer Hall. Volleyball and our other athletic programs provide students with an experience that helps them to learn and to grow in ways that will benefit them the rest of their lives. Teamwork is important not only on the field, but in the boardroom, the operating room and in the classroom. Many of our alumni who were student-athletes during their time here have distinguished themselves in endeavors far removed from their sport, but they have carried with them the important life lessons they have learned on the field and from their coaches, their teammates and even their opponents. I hope that you enjoy the 2011 season and that you will support all of these young athletes enthusiastically.

On May 19, 1992, Dr. Angelo Armenti, Jr. was appointed by the Board of Governors of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education as the sixth president of California University of Pennsylvania, founded in 1852.

As undergraduates, Cal U students can choose from more than 150 programs of study in three undergraduate colleges.

Cal U is home to more than 100 clubs and organizations. The Student Activities Board provides various programs which include: concerts, lectures, films, off-campus trips and recreational activities, to name a few.
