Shutting the Opposition DownScoring didn’t come easy for the opposition last year, asthe Lumberjacks held their opponents to just 16 goals in19 games. In its last 13 games of the season, NAU onlyallowed four goals scored, in which the Lumberjacks post-ed 10 shutouts. The 10 shutouts were just one short of thesingle-season record in school history.

Records, Records and More Records2010 was a record breaking season for the NAU soccerprogram, both individually and as a team. Brenna Boies setthe all-time assists record with her 19th career assist onSeptember 19 against Air Force. She finished the seasonwith eight assists for the second straight year, andwrapped up her career with 23 total.

Tori Rocke shattered the career shutouts record last sea-son after posting nine shutouts in 2010 to bring her totalto 21. The record breaking performance came on October1 against San Francisco, where Rocke made one save forher 14th career shutout. Her .808 win percentage in goaland her 0.60 goals against average also set new NAU sea-son-bests. Fellow goalkeeper Lauren Weaver and Rockealso allowed just eight goals apiece, setting a new schoolrecord for least goals allowed in a season.

Tori Howe and Kristi Andreassen both capped off theirillustrious careers at NAU with a school-record 79 gamesplayed, equaling the mark set by Sarah Neatherton oneyear prior. Howe started every single one of those gamesto break the school record with 79 career matches started, while Andreassen now sits right behind her with 78 careermatches started.

As a team, the Lumberjacks posted a 12 game unbeatenstreak, a school-best and just one shy of the Big Sky mark.During this streak, the squad broke school and Big Skyrecords with six consecutive shutouts. NAU didn’t allow agoal for 569 minutes and two seconds during that span, breaking the school-record for longest opponent scoringdrought.

The team also matched the 2008 squad with 12 wins, aprogram-high, and its .711 winning percentage is a newsingle-season record. They also posted their best season athome with a .818 winning percentage at LumberjackStadium, despite the ongoing construction of the Healthand Learning Center. Their first unbeaten conference sea-son at 6-0-1 also clinched the program’s first-ever regularseason Big Sky title.

The Year of Number ThreeAmong the excellence exemplified by the team both on and offthe field, Andreassen was the model of the perfect student-ath-lete. On the field, she led the team with six goals and 15 pointswhile being named the conference’s Defensive Most ValuablePlayer and a unanimous All-Big Sky First Team selection. Off thefield, she graduated with a 4.00 GPA in exercise science and wasnamed the ESPN Academic All-American of the Year for women’ssoccer. She was also a finalist for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Awardand was a first team NSCAA Scholar All-American. Most recently, she was nominated by the Big Sky for NCAA Woman of the Year.

The Big Sky Conference enters its 49th year of athleticcompetition in 2011-12. The Big Sky is an NCAADivision I member in all sports, with member institu-tions classified in the Football ChampionshipSubdivision (formally I-AA). For the sixth and final year, the Big Sky is a nine-team league.

The current lineup includes Eastern Washington, IdahoState, Montana, Montana State, Northern Arizona,Northern Colorado, Portland State, Sacramento Stateand Weber State. Northern Colorado is the newest mem-ber of the league, having joined the conference in 2006.

The Big Sky will expand to an 11-team league with 13football-playing members on July 1, 2012. Southern UtahUniversity and the University of North Dakota will join asfull members. Cal Poly and UC Davis will join as football-affiliate members.

The league has become one of the strongest Division I con-ferences in the West and is a national leader in the FootballChampionship Subdivision. Six times, Big Sky teams havewon the Division I National Championship, includingEastern Washington in 2010. A Big Sky team has played forthe national championship each of the past three seasons.

The Big Sky Conference was established in 1963 by six char-ter members – Idaho, Idaho State, Gonzaga, Montana,Montana State and Weber State. Those six schools formedthe foundation of the Big Sky before the league expanded in1970 by adding Boise State and Northern Arizona. Gonzagaleft the Sky in 1979 and was replaced by Nevada, which gavethe league eight members. The conference grew to nineschools in 1987 with the addition of Eastern Washington.

The 1990s saw change in the makeup of the league, begin-ning in 1992 when Nevada departed and put the Big Skyback at eight teams. In 1996 Boise State and Idaho left andat the same time the conference added Portland State,Sacramento State and Cal State Northridge. The Big Skymaintained nine teams for five years before Cal StateNorthridge departed in the spring of 2001.

The Big Sky spreads across eight states spanning from thePacific Ocean to the Rocky Mountain Front. The Big Sky isrepresented along the entire west coast with schools inWashington, Oregon and California. League schools alsorange up and down the Rocky Mountains with institutionsin Montana, Idaho, Utah, Arizona and Colorado. Of theeight western-most states in the contiguous United Statesonly one, Nevada, is not represented in the Big Sky.

On Feb 25, 1963, the name Big Sky was adopted by the sixpresidents of the charter members as the name of the newconference. The name Big Sky originated in a novel writtenby the late A.B. (Bud) Guthrie of Great Falls, Mont., in 1947entitled “The Big Sky.” Jack Hollowell, a former Montanaadvertising director, promoted the Big Sky theme for the

Treasure State. While on a track and field trip fromPocatello, Idaho, to Missoula, Mont., the legendary DubbyHolt of Idaho State saw a “Welcome to Big Sky Country”sign as his team entered Montana. Holt, and his athletesthought “Big Sky” would be a perfect name for the new con-ference. Harry Missildine of the Spokane Spokesman-Review called for the newly formed league to be named theBig Sky Conference in his column dated Feb. 20, 1963.

The Big Sky sponsors championships in 14 sports, includingmen’s and women’s cross country, indoor and outdoor trackand field, basketball and tennis. In addition, there are alsochampionships in football, and women’s volleyball, golf andsoccer. The Big Sky will add a softball championship in thespring of 2013.

The 2011-12 season will mark the 24th year that the Big SkyConference will sponsor championships in women’s sports. The former Mountain West Conference existed from 1982-88, sponsoring championships for women’s sports at thesame institutions the Big Sky had men’s programs. The BigSky merged with the Mountain West in 1988, forming oneleague for both men and women.

Doug Fullerton, the fifth commissioner of the Big SkyConference, is in his 17th year at the helm. Fullerton tookover the Big Sky on July 1, 1995, replacing longtime commis-sioner Ron Stephenson, who passed away in 2011.Stephenson served the league for 14 years. Steve Belko wasthe commissioner from 1977-81, while John Roning heldthe post from 1971-77. The first league commissioner wasJack Friel, who served from 1963-71.

NAU-Yavapai opened its Prescott Valleydoors last fall, allowing students to earn bachelor’sdegrees at about one-third the cost of a traditional, resi-dential college experience. The savings comes from offer-ing a limited number of degree options and using existingresources through NAU’s Flagstaff campus. The cost-sav-ing model garnered the attention of Gov. Jan Brewer, whocalled it “visionary” and “an example for the entire stateand the nation.”* Expansion of nursing and the health professions. Theuniversity has placed emphasis on graduating more stu-dents in nursing and developing or expanding programsin occupational therapy, athletic training and physiciansassistant.* Commitment to research.
