President Anthony J. DiGiorgioPresident Anthony J. DiGiorgio

“We at Winthrop encourage excellence in all endeavors, both in the classroom and in the playing arena.”

Winthrop President Anthony DiGiorgio and First Lady Gale

Now beginning his 23rd year as president of Winthrop Uni-versity, Dr. Anthony J. DiGiorgio believes that attaining excel-lence requires three things:• caring more than some might think is wise,• risking more than some might think is safe, and• dreaming more than some might think is practical.

That approach has resulted in Dr. DiGiorgio now being the longest- serving president of any public university in South Carolina, while Winthrop University has grown from a regional college with a venerable history to a national-caliber compre-hensive university that helps set the pace for quality higher education. Today, Winthrop University is regularly rated among the top public institutions of its kind in the South by U.S. News and World Report, winning accolades for: academic excellence emphasis on students’ personal character development commitment to diversity award-winning student programming sound fi scal management, and overall institutional excellence.

National publications, including Barron’s Best Buys and The Princeton Review, also rate Winthrop University among the “best buy, best value” institutions in the nation. U.S. News and World Report in 2010 also named Winthrop to its “Keep An Eye On These Schools” list of institutions that have recently made “the most promising and innovative changes in academics, faculty, students, campus or facilities.” Some of the University’s notable accomplishments during Dr. DiGiorgio’s tenure include: the designation change from Winthrop College to Win- throp University in 1992; Winthrop’s fi rst capital campaign, which raised $31.2 mil-

lion for scholarships, academic program enhancements and more faculty development and research opportun- ities; more than $120 million in capital building projects that have adapted the University’s historic campus to contem- porary needs, including a new Life Sciences Building; The Courtyard residence hall; Owens Hall, a general use academic building; the West Center for Health, Physical Education and Wellness; Carroll Hall, an academic facil- ity for the College of Business Administration, the Culp Chiller Plant. and the DiGiorgio Campus Center, named for President DiGiorgio and his wife, Gale.

Dr. DiGiorgio began his presidency by articulating a “Vision of Distinction” for Winthrop, then leading the university community in designing a series of annual work plans that advance the goals encompassed by the vision. Each new year’s work plan builds on the foundation of the previous year’s achievements. DiGiorgio likens it to a family’s achievements, with each new generation building on the foundation of its elders — an observation drawn from his own youth. The son of an immigrant bricklayer, Dr. DiGiorgio was born in Sharon, Pa. Like many immigrants to America, the DiGiorgios found that hard work and persistence were the keys to survival – key elements that characterize the DiGiorgio leadership style today. After receiving his undergraduate degree at Gannon Col-lege, Dr. DiGiorgio earned his master’s and doctoral degrees from Purdue University, where he later became an instructor and Assistant to the Dean of Humanities, Social Science and Education. In 1970, he began 19 years of service at The Col-lege of New Jersey, where he served in a number of positions, including Vice President for Academic Affairs. Dr. DiGiorgio has served two terms on the board of direc-tors of the NCAA Board and its executive committee, as well as two terms as president of the Big South Conference, He currently chairs the Membership Committee. In addition, he has served on the board of directors of the Charlotte branch of the Federal Reserve Bank, Richmond District, and in 2009-2010 began a second term on the board of the Charlotte Regional Partnership, a regional economic development organization serving 2.5 million people in both Carolinas.

Winthrop Athletics is strongly committed to the welfare and support of its student-athletes through its Academics, Student Services and Compliance offi ces. Winthrop’s committment to academic integrity is demonstrated by providing its student-athletes with a variety of resources which are housed in the Rock Hill Coca-Cola Academic Resource Center to help them achieve success in the classroom. The academic staff works closely with its student-athletes throughout their entire experience at Winthrop University to ensure their academic success. Services include advising student-athletes regarding general academic issues, NCAA academic eligibility and degree planning. Winthrop also assists students with the University academic requirements - proper counseling to student-athletes in academic planning matters such as goal setting, plans of study, schedule building, choosing majors and degree requirements. The academic services staff also makes student-athletes aware of the NCAA, Big South Conference, and Winthrop University academic policies that affect their academic progress.

Winthrop Athletics holds its staff and student-athletes to the highest standards of honesty, fairness, and professional ethics. A student-athlete computer lab in the coliseum is provided for the athletes during set hours as well. Tutoring is also provided to all student-athletes. The Academic Coordinator works closely with the academic departments of Winthrop to provide student-athletes with highly recommended and trained tutors. Study Hall is one area utilized to assist student-athletes in developing effective time management skills. All incoming student-athletes (freshmen and transfers) are required to complete a prescribed number of study hall hours each week.

Winthrop’s Student Athlete Advisory Council plays a key role in serving needs of the student-athletes

CHAMPS/Life Skills Programs Winthrop University is committed to providing the student-athlete with personal development opportunities that will challenge and enhance the individual’s collegiate experience. The program is designed to provide the student-athlete with leadership and service learning experiences. In addition, programs and seminars address career development, academic success, and personal achievement. The CHAMPS/Life Skills Program (Challenging Athletes Minds for Personal Success) was founded in 1991 by the NCAA Foundation and the Division 1-A Athletic Directors’ Association. As part of the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program, the Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) was formed to hear the “voice” of student-athletes, help provide feedback to the Coordinator and allow student-athletes a voice in certain policies and events pertaining to them.

Student-Athlete Advisory Council The Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) is a representative body of every varsity sport at Winthrop University. The Council is student-athlete led. Representatives of each athletic team work with the CHAMPS/Life Skills Coordinator to oversee the program and make sure the program is meeting the needs of the Winthrop University student-athletes. Through the efforts of SAAC, Winthrop has won the 2009, 2010 and 2011 Kallander Cup from the Big South Conference for its community service.

Spencer Smith is entering his second season as head coach of the Winthrop women’s soccer program. He came to the Lady Eagles last season after spending the previous 16 seasons at the helm of the men’s soccer team at Big South member Radford, where he earned Big South Coach of the Year honors twice and is the school’s all-time leaders in victories. Smith made an impact during his fi rst season at Win-throp by being named the Big South Coach of the Year after the Lady Eagles fi nished the regular season in a tie for fi rst place with a 6-2-1 conference mark and received the top seed for the Big South Conference Tournament. It was the second time in program history that Winthrop had won a conference regular season championship. The Lady Eagles also tied a school record for having the most players earn a conference postseason honor as six Winthrop athletes were recognized. The Lady Eagles set a school record in 2010 by shutting out an opponent in fi ve straight matches, and also tied a school mark set in 2006 for most consecu-tive victories with fi ve. Courtney Durbin’s eight goals last year were the most by a Winthrop player since Chelsea White netted the same total during the 2007 season. She fi nished tied for fourth in the conference last season in goals. “We are very pleased to have Spencer Smith as our women’s soccer coach,” said athletic director Tom Hickman at Smith’s introductory press con-ference on Feb. 9, 2010. “He has proven over 21 years of coaching that he can produce win-ning programs and championship-level teams in men’s soccer, and we believe he can bring that same success to the Winthrop women’s program. He has a history of developing play-ers on the fi eld as demonstrated by the number of All-Conference performers he produced at Radford, and he has a strong record of produc-ing successful student-athletes in the classroom as well.” During his 16 season with the Highlanders, the program made two NCAA College Cup ap-pearances as well as one Big South Conference Regular Season Championship and two runner-up fi nishes. He compiled a 136-139-30 (.495)

record at Radford to rank him fourth on the Big South Conference all-time coaching list and third among active coaches. His 56 Big South victories are fourth-most on the all-time coaching list. Under Smith’s guidance, Ian Spooner was honored as the Big South Player of the Year in 1994 and 1995, while Troy Washington took home the award in 1998. Both Spooner and Washington were named to the Na-tional Soccer Coaches’ Association of America (NSCAA) All-Region teams during those seasons. Sacha Drouin (1996), T.J. Rolfi ng (2002) and Omar Zinoveev (2004-05) were also named to NSCAA All-Region teams under Smith. Since 1994, 30 of his players have been recog-nized on the Big South postseason all-conference teams. Not only have Smith’s players been successful on the soccer fi eld, they have also excelled in the classroom. Patrick Colas was the recipient of the NCAA Postgradu-ate Scholarship in 2005 and was a two-time College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Aca-demic All-American. 2011 Season Outlook2011 Season OutlookEagles Aim For First NCAA Tournament Eagles Aim For First NCAA Tournament Bid In Year Two Of Spencer Smith EraBid In Year Two Of Spencer Smith Era

The Winthrop women’s soccer team cap-tured its second Big South Regular Season title last year in its fi rst season under head coach Spencer Smith after posting a 7-10-2 overall record and 6-2-1 conference mark. The six conference wins match a school record for most Big South wins in a season after going 6-1-1 in 2006 and winning its fi rst Conference Regular Season crown. The Eagles fi nished the regular season in a fi ve-way tie for fi rst place with Radford, High Point, Charleston Southern and Coastal Carolina, but by virtue of a tie-breaker Winthrop was able to garner the No. 1 seed for the Big South Conference Tournament. It was only the second time in program history that the Eagles received the top seed for the confer-ence tournament as the 2006 squad did the same. The 2010 season started slowly for Winthrop going 0-7-1 heading into Big South Conference play, but from that point on the Eagles went 7-3-1 during the fi nal 11 contests and had six players on All-Conference teams. Winthrop had three players (Courtney Durbin, Allie VandeWater, Katie Perkinson) named First Team All-Conference (tied for school record), one Second Team All-Conference (Tricia Vensel), one All-Freshman Team (Anna Sammons) and one All-Academic Team (Ra-chel Webster). Smith also picked up his third career Coach of the Year honors, but was his fi rst coaching women’s college soccer. The 2011 squad returns eight starters from last season while welcoming nine new additions, but will have to replace four start-ers in Vensel, Perkinson, Lindsay Taylor and Tiana Tallant. Vensel fi nished 2010 tied for the team lead with four assists and was second with four goals, and Perkinson started all 19 games. Taylor joined Perkinson in starting 19 games, while Tallant recorded a career-high two goals. Not only will the Eagles have to re-place four starters from last season, but they will also be without the services of Sammons for the entire season as she suffered a knee injury. Here is a look at the 2011 Winthrop women’s soccer team, and who will occupy each position this season:

Goalkeeper The Eagles began last season by rotating the starting goalkeeper position with redshirt-senior Kelsy Weavil and junior Sarah Schip-pers until the beginning of Big South play where Weavil took the reins and helped lead Winthrop to fi ve of its six conference victories.

Weavil compiled four shutouts on the season, all of which came in consecutive Big South matches, and allowed just three goals in her eight starts in conference play. Overall, she started 14 games on the season and snagged 62 saves to go with her 0.97 goals against average. Weavil also had a save percentage of .816 in 2011, which ranked her fourth in the Big South. She snagged a season-high eight saves twice against Marshall and at High Point. Schippers appeared in a career-best six games with fi ve starts last season, and tallied 28 saves for a save percentage of .778 to go with her 1.45 goals against average. She pro-duced her fi rst collegiate victory in net in the Eagles 2-1 conference-opening victory over Gardner-Webb last season, while grabbing a career-high eight saves twice against Georgia State and South Carolina State. Freshman Amelia Henderson will provide depth at the goalkeeper position this season, but is expected to be redshirted.

Forwards Right before conference play began last season, Smith made several personnel changes to help Winthrop produce more goals after scoring just four in its fi rst six games. One move included moving Durbin, who was playing defender at the time, up top to one of the two forward positions. The move paid off as the Eagles netted 16 goals in their fi nal 12 games, with eight of those coming from Durbin. The eight goals by Durbin were a career-high for her and most by a Winthrop player since Chelsea White scored eight in 2007. She fi nished 2010 ranked in the top 10

for the Big South in points (18), goals (8) and game-winning goals (5). Durbin notched two multi-goal games last season, both coming against VMI in the regular season and Big South Tournament, and scored all eight of her goals in conference games. She appeared in all 19 games with 18 starts, and was second on the team with 38 shots. Junior Lia Gordon, redshirt-sophomore Gabrielle Corn and sophomore Caroline My-ers also return up top for Winthrop, providing it with more veteran presence as all three ap-peared in a combined 32 games last season. All three came off the bench in 2010 with Gor-don playing in all 19 contests, Corn in seven and Myers in six. Corn tallied the only points out of the three with her fi rst collegiate goal in a loss to Appalachian State in last season’s opening weekend. Gordon did attempt 11 total shots including a season-high two at High Point, while Myers took her only two shots at Presbyterian College. The forward position will welcome four freshmen to the mix in 2011 including Yoella Lopez, Grace Radler, Krystyna Freda and Devin Puckett. Lopez, Radler and Freda are expected to play primarily at forward, while Puckett will pull double-duty between the position and defender.

Midfi elders The midfi eld position returns three of its four starters from last season including VandeWater, Webster and redshirt-sopho-more Kylene Babauta. All three contributed signifi cantly in the midfi eld for the Eagles in

2011 Season Outlook2011 Season Outlook2010, with VandeWater and Webster tying for the team-lead in assists at four each. Vande-Water was third on the team in goals and points, while Webster was fourth in goals and points. Webster has become a stalwart on the left side of the midfi eld starting in 58 of her 60 career games played and could become the all-time leader in games started after the season is done. She dished out a career-high two assists against VMI last season in the Big South Tournament. VandeWater also set a career-best in assists last year and recorded two in Winthrop’s season-opener against Mar-shall. She started in all 19 contests in 2010, with both of her goals coming at South Caroli-na State and UNC Asheville. Babauta missed her freshman season in 2009 due to an ACL injury but came back last season and played in all 19 games with 15 starts, including 13 of those games consecutively. She recorded her fi rst collegiate point with an assist against VMI in the Big South Tournament. Junior Ariel Kunde returns after missing 12 games last season due to an ACL injury. She did start in seven of eight games and tallied four shot attempts before suffering the injury. Corn, Freda and junior Kylie Long, will also be looked upon to contribute off the bench at midfi eld. Long appeared in all 19 games in 2010 with three starts, and attempt-ed seven total shots. Freshmen newcomers in the midfi eld expected to contribute right away are Ashley Herndon, Kelly Clark and Tori Davis. Clark missed all of last season after suffering an ACL injury.

Defenders The back line of defense for the Eagles will have a completely different look in 2011 after losing Sammons for the season along with Perkinson and Taylor to graduation. The lone defender returning with starting experi-

ence is senior Nichole Smith, who started in 12 games last season and appeared in 16 overall. Smith was one of the players inserted in the starting lineup on a permanent basis beginning with the South Carolina State game and played a crucial role in the Winthrop defense holding opponents scoreless in fi ve consecutive games. One personnel move that Smith made in the off-season was to move sophomore Megan Pritts to one of the four defender positions taking the place of Sammons. Pritts made 15 starts last season as a midfi elder, and compiled three points on one goal and one assist. Smith and Pritts will be looked upon to anchor the back line for the Eagles as two new starters are inserted into the lineup. Junior Daria Borowski and redshirt-soph-omore Rebecca Hamm will also add depth in the back. Borowski appeared in four games last season with three starts, while Hamm played in one contest. Newcomers at the defender position include Herndon, Kjersti Traaen, Okina Craw-ley and Annie Renaud. Expect Herndon to contribute more as a defender, while Traaen redshirted last season after suffering an ACL injury. Crawley is a sophomore who trans-ferred to Winthrop after playing last season for Big South member Coastal Carolina.

Schedule The Eagles will open their 2011 season with two exhibition games against Wofford College and Catawba College. Winthrop will face the Terriers at home on Aug. 12 and at the Indians on Aug. 16. The regular season for the Eagles will begin at home on Aug. 19 against the Georgia Southern Eagles before hitting the road for two consecutive matches to end the month of August against The Citadel Bulldogs (Aug. 25) and College of Charleston Cougars (Aug. 28).

The month of September for Winthrop will begin in Florence, SC against the Francis Marion Patriots (Sept. 4) before returning home on Sept. 9 against the USC Upstate Spartans. The other two home games for the Eagles in September come against the East Tennessee State Buccaneers (Sept. 17) and South Carolina State Bulldogs (Sept. 21). The remaining road games in the month are against the Western Carolina Catamounts (Sept. 11) and the Big South opener with the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs on Sept. 27. The Campbell Camels (Oct. 1) will come to Eagle Field to open the month of October. Campbell is returning to the Big South Confer-ence in 2011 after previously participating in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Following the matchup with the Camels, Winthrop will host defending Big South champion High Point Panthers on Oct. 6 and Liberty Flames on Oct. 8 in back-to-back home conference games. The Eagles will then hit the road for two straight road contests against the VMI Keydets (Oct. 13) and Radford Highlanders (Oct. 15) before hosting the Presbyterian Col-lege Blue Hose (Oct. 20) and UNC Asheville Bulldogs (Oct. 22) in their fi nal home games of the 2011 season. Winthrop wraps up its regular season on the road against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (Oct. 27) and Charleston Southern Buccaneers (Oct. 29). The 2011 Big South Conference Wom-en's Soccer Championship will be hosted by Charleston Southern and played at Blackbaud Stadium, home to the USL PRO League’s Charleston Battery.

Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the fi eld of play and in the classroom. The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on the national stage, inno-vative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the Conference’s mission of “Developing Leaders Through Athlet-ics.” The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s fi rst Commis-sioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an offi cial confer-ence. The Big South’s fi rst year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Confer-ence was granted full-fl edged NCAA Division I status. During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990, the League received its fi rst automatic bid – receiving an automatic qualifi er to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leadership, the Conference imple-mented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its fi rst-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing among some of the fi nest teams in the nation. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the League’s third Commissioner, and in his 13 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promot-ing the Conference to new levels. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during the past several years, he has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball and softball for the fi rst time in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggres-sive and unique television packages. Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its fi rst long-range strategic plan, re-affi rming the League’s vision as a distintive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and has solidifi ed Conference membership with the additions of High Point, Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian, and in 2011-12, the return of charter member Campbell University. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its fi rst live event video streaming in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 600 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms.
