“We at Winthrop encourage excellence in all endeavors, both in the classroom and in the playing arena.”

Winthrop President Anthony DiGiorgio and First Lady Gale

Now in his 23rd year as president of Winthrop University, Dr. Anthony J. DiGiorgio believes that attaining excellence requires three things:• caring more than some might think is wise,• risking more than some might think is safe, and• dreaming more than some might think is practical.

That approach has resulted in Dr. DiGiorgio now being the longest- serving president of any public university in South Carolina, while Winthrop University has grown from a regional college with a venerable history to a national-caliber compre-hensive university that helps set the pace for quality higher education. Today, Winthrop University is regularly rated among the top public institutions of its kind in the South by U.S. News and World Report, winning accolades for: academic excellence emphasis on students’ personal character development commitment to diversity award-winning student programming sound fi scal management, and overall institutional excellence.

National publications, including Barron’s Best Buys and The Princeton Review, also rate Winthrop University among the “best buy, best value” institutions in the nation. U.S. News and World Report in 2010 also named Winthrop to its “Keep An Eye On These Schools” list of institutions that have recently made “the most promising and innovative changes in academics, faculty, students, campus or facilities.” Some of the University’s notable accomplishments during Dr. DiGiorgio’s tenure include: the designation change from Winthrop College to Win- throp University in 1992; Winthrop’s fi rst capital campaign, which raised $31.2 mil-

lion for scholarships, academic program enhancements and more faculty development and research opportun- ities; more than $120 million in capital building projects that have adapted the University’s historic campus to contem- porary needs, including a new Life Sciences Building; The Courtyard residence hall; Owens Hall, a general use academic building; the West Center for Health, Physical Education and Wellness; Carroll Hall, an academic facil- ity for the College of Business Administration, the Culp Chiller Plant. and the DiGiorgio Campus Center, named for President DiGiorgio and his wife, Gale. Dr. DiGiorgio began his presidency by articulating a “Vision of Distinction” for Winthrop, then leading the university community in designing a series of annual work plans that advance the goals encompassed by the vision. Each new year’s work plan builds on the foundation of the previous year’s achievements. DiGiorgio likens it to a family’s achievements, with each new generation building on the foundation of its elders — an observation drawn from his own youth. The son of an immigrant bricklayer, Dr. DiGiorgio was born in Sharon, Pa. Like many immigrants to America, the DiGiorgios found that hard work and persistence were the keys to survival – key elements that characterize the DiGiorgio leadership style today. After receiving his undergraduate degree at Gannon Col-lege, Dr. DiGiorgio earned his master’s and doctoral degrees from Purdue University, where he later became an instructor and Assistant to the Dean of Humanities, Social Science and Education. In 1970, he began 19 years of service at The Col-lege of New Jersey, where he served in a number of positions, including Vice President for Academic Affairs. Dr. DiGiorgio has served two terms on the board of direc-tors of the NCAA Board and its executive committee, as well as two terms as president of the Big South Conference, He currently chairs the Membership Committee. In addition, he has served on the board of directors of the Charlotte branch of the Federal Reserve Bank, Richmond District, and in 2009-2010 began a second term on the board of the Charlotte Regional Partnership, a regional economic development organization serving 2.5 million people in both Carolinas.

Jodi Wendt, the 2009 Big South Conference Coach of the Year, is entering her eighth season overall with the Winthrop women’s golf program and sixth as the head coach. She came to Winthrop in 2003 as an assistant coach under former longtime head coach Eddie Weldon, who retired after 19 years at the helm of the Lady Eagles following the 2005-06 season. Prior to joining the Lady Eagles staff, Wendt was a nine-year LPGA Teaching Professional and former player on the Players West Professional Tour. During her tenure Winthrop has had 10 players named Big South All-Conference and Big South Golfer of the Week. The Lady Eagles have also had one golfer placed on the Big South All-Academic Team in each of her six seasons as head coach. Jutta Degerman was selected as the 2008 Big South Golfer of the Year, while two players have been named the Big South Freshman of the Year. She has had three players honored as NGCA Academic All-American within the last two seasons. A native of Hutchinson, MN, Wendt graduated from Minnesota State University in 1995 with a bachelor’s degree in social studies education and a minor in political science. She was a four-year mem-ber of the school’s golf team and was honored as an Academic All-American in each of her four years. As a collegiate player, she earned All-American honors twice and was the 1996 Arizona State Amateur Champion. “Jodi’s experience as a collegiate and professional player, coupled with her vast experience as an LPGA Class A instructor, is go-ing to enhance the Winthrop program,” said Weldon. “Her experience as a teaching professional is clearly above anything we have had here before.” In 2008, Wendt was inducted into the Minnesota State Athlet-ics Hall of Fame. She earned a coaching certifi cate upon graduation and served as a girl’s golf coach at Hutchinson (MN) High School from 2001-2003. Wendt also served as head golf pro and manager of Meadow Links Golf Course in Hutchinson for three years. Prior to returning to her hometown to coach and serve as a club pro, Wendt was an assistant golf pro for three years at a course in Queen Creek, AZ, and for two years at a course in Glendale, AZ.

The 2011-12 Winthrop women’s golf team is made up of seasoned returnees and a very talented group of freshmen. The Lady Eagles will be looking to their upperclassmen for leadership on and off the course this season. Head coach Jodi Wendt enters her sixth season at the helm of the Winthrop women’s golf program, and eighth overall, with three seniors, two redshirt-sophomores and three fresh-men on the roster. Leading the way for the Lady Eagles is senior Kayla Cline (Socorro, NM). The 2010 All-Big South Conference member was the top performer during the 2011 fall season with a 78.73 stroke average. She also had her most consistent play during her collegiate career by shooting a 72, 78 and 76 at the UNCG Starmount Fall Classic. Cline posted one top 10 fi nish dur-ing the fall season and she fi nished tied for ninth place at the UNCG Starmount Fall Classic. Another leader on the team is fellow senior Katie Bolling (New Brighton, MN). Bolling, a three-time NGCA All-American Scholar, had a strong start to her season with a 79.73 stroke average during the fall and a 15th place fi nish at The Winthrop Intercollegiate. She fi nished the fall third on the team in stroke average. The third, and fi nal, senior on the 2011-12 roster is Allison Itria (Austin, TX). Itria’s experience on the golf course will be looked to for leadership during the spring season. She did not play in any events during the fall. Leadership is also coming from the squad’s two redshirt-sophomores Allison Lee (Salisbury, NC) and Nicole Moober-ry (Norfolk, NE). Lee average a stroke average of 81.55 during the fall season and had her best fi nish yet with a 17th place fi nish at The Winthrop Intercollegiate. Mooberry played in two events (fi ve rounds total) during the fall where she averaged an 83.80 stroke average. She was also named to the 2011 NGCA All-American Scholar Team. Winthrop’s strong freshman class is made up of Jennifer Dilger (Palmdale, CA), Viivi Nuorti (Helsinki, Finland) and Rachel Wyatt (Blythewood, SC). Dilger had a great start to her collegiate career as a Lady Eagle by fi nishing second on the team with a 79.36 stroke aver-age and a fourth place fi nish in The Winthrop Intercollegiate. She fi nished tied for the team-lead in rounds played with 11. Nuorti also began her college career with a top 10 fi nish in her fi rst collegiate tournament after placing fourth at The Win-throp Intercollegiate shooting back-to-back rounds of 75 and 77. She posted a fall stroke average of 84.75 in eight rounds played. Wyatt played in only one event in the fall, but will be looked upon as being an impact player in the future. She fi nished in 29th place with a best round of 81 at The Winthrop Intercol-legiate. Wyatt posted a stroke average of 83 in two rounds played. The Lady Eagles played in four events during the 2011 fall season, all of which took place in the month of October. Win-throp opened up its season Oct. 2-4 at the UNCG Starmount

Fall Classic in Greensboro, NC before hosting The Winthrop Intercollegiate Oct. 8-9. The fi nal two fall tournaments for the Lady Eagles were the Blue Raider Invitational in Murfreesboro, TN (Oct. 24-25) and Paladin Invitational in Greenville, SC (Oct. 28-30). Winthrop will kick off its 2012 spring season with the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate (Feb. 26-28). The Lady Eagles’ month of March consists of three tournaments beginning in Southport, NC Mar. 10-11 with the Spider Spring Break Golf Invitational, which is hosted by the University of Richmond. Winthrop then travels to Monterey, CA for the Del Monte Invita-tional (Mar. 18-20) before concluding the month with the UNCW Lady Seahawk Classic (Mar. 24-25). The fi nal regular season tournament will be the 2012 Big South Conference Champion-ship on Apr. 9-10. The Big South Conference Championship will again be played at the Patriot Golf Club in Ninety-Six, SC.

Big South ConferenceBig South Conference

The Big South Conference has enjoyed unprecedented achievements and unparal-leled success in league history over the past few years. Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a com-petitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the fi eld of play and in the classroom. The league’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accom-plishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charles-ton Southern (then Baptist College) athletic director Howard Bagwell and Augusta president George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, re-ceiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the league’s fi rst commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an offi cial conference. The Big South’s fi rst year of competition was the Fall of 1984, and in September, 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fl edged NCAA Division I status. During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. The league received its fi rst automatic bid in 1990 to the NCAA Baseball Championship. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as commissioner. Under Sasser’s leadership, the con-ference implemented its fi rst public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its fi rst-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing among some of the fi nest teams in the nation. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander re-placed Sasser as the league’s third commissioner, and in is 12 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the conference to new levels. The conference’s on-fi eld accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. Annually, more than 40 percent of the conference’s student-athletes are named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average, and the league has had almost 100 Academic All-Americans in its quarter-century of existence. The conference is made up of 11 full-time members which include Campbell, Charleston Southern, Coastal Carolina, Gardner-Webb, High Point, Liberty, UNC Asheville, Presbyterian College, Radford, VMI and Winthrop.
