• 2015 Patriot League Coach of the Year

Nadia Ste-Marie is in her fourth season as the head coach of the Navy women’s golf program in 2015-16.

With the arrival of the program’s first fully recruited class in 2014-15, Ste-Marie immediately took the Navy women’s golf team to new heights. Ste-Marie was named the 2015 Patriot League Women’s Golf Coach of the Year, the team dropped its scoring average by 30 strokes from the previous season and four Navy freshmen placed in the top-15 at the league championship tournament.

Navy’s Class of 2018 provided an immediate boost and Ste-Ma-rie’s coaching ability was on full display during the 2014-15 season. The Mids lowered their scoring average by an incredible margin, going from 357 in 2013-14 to 327 in 2014-15.

Ste-Marie led Navy to a third-place finish at the 2015 Patriot League Women’s Golf Championship, which the team success-fully hosted at the Naval Academy Golf Club. Navy’s 54-hole total of 978 at the league championship was 50 strokes better than the previous season. With four of Navy’s plebes placing in the top-15 and Navy taking third place, the league’s head coach-es selected Ste-Marie as the 2015 Patriot League Women’s Golf Coach of the Year.

Navy dramatically lowered its program-best scores for both a sin-gle round (315) and for a 54-hole tournament (961) in 2014-15. Additionally, Christine Walker became the second Midshipman to earn All-Patriot League Second Team honors in 2015 after tying for 10th at the league championship.

In 2013-14, while still awaiting the arrival of her first fully recruited class, Ste-Marie’s coaching ability was fully evident as Navy lowered its team average and then-sophomore Renata Bucher became the first Navy women’s golfer to earn All-Patriot League honors.

Under Ste-Marie’s direction, Navy lowered its team average by seven strokes from last season while also shaving 26 strokes off its total score at the 2014 Patriot League Championship from the previous season’s league meet.

Bucher tied for seventh place at the Patriot League Champion-ship to earn All-Patriot League Second Team honors. Bucher also became the first Navy women’s golfer to be the medalist of a tournament when she won the Navy Spring Classic. Bucher had four top-10 finishes in her final five events of the season and led the team with a stroke average of 81.5.

During the introductory 2012-13 season, Ste-Marie led the Mid-shipmen to a third-place finish at the inaugural Patriot League Championships, despite having the services of no recruited athletes. Bucher, a freshman, led the team in stroke average and was named to the WGCA Scholar All-America Team.

Ste-Marie was tabbed as the first head coach in program history on November 5, 2012, when Naval Academy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk announced on that women’s golf would be elevated to a varsity sport.

Due of the timing of the announcement, Navy missed out on the fall season of its inaugural 2012-13 season and the arrival of Ste-Marie’s first fully recruited class was delayed until the 2014-15 season. Despite the challenges, Ste-Marie has been successful in laying down a foundation for a program that will soon compete at the top of the Patriot League.

Ste-Marie had an outstanding collegiate career at both Hawai’i and Florida State before graduating in 1990 with a degree in sociology from Florida State. As a Seminole, Ste-Marie won four individual tournaments and had 13 top-10 finishes during her career.

In the summer before her senior year at Florida State, she played in the 1988 U.S. Women’s Open and U.S. Women’s Ama-teur, then capped off her career in Tallahassee by being named a

first-team All-American and qualified as an individual competitor in the 1989 NCAA Golf Championship.

During her time at Hawai’i, she competed in the 1985 and 1987 U.S. Women’s Amateur Tournaments and won a pair of amateur tournaments in Hawai’i in 1985. After graduating from Florida State, Ste-Marie turned pro on the LPGA tour in 1990 and went on to play in the 1991 and 1992 Women’s British Open Champi-onships and the 1996, 1997 and 1998 U.S. Women’s Open.

She was the qualifying medalist for the 1997 U.S. Women’s Open, and recorded 19 top-10 professional finishes including titles at the du Maurier Ltd. Series in London in 1993 and at the 2006 LPGA TC&P North East Sectional Championship.

Ste-Marie held seven different professional tour membership cards, competing professionally for 10 years on the LPGA Tour, European Tour, Asian Tour, Canadian PGA and the FUTURES Tour, among others.

Ste-Marie is currently an assistant golf professional at the United States Naval Academy Golf Club, a position she has held since 1999. She has also served as the Director of Golf at the Sherwood Forest Boys and Girls Summer Camp and has been an LPGA Teaching & Club Professional since 2000.

She was inducted into the Florida State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2008.

Ste-Marie and her husband, Bill McKeon, are the parents of two sons, Kyle (15) and Noah, (12) and a daughter, Taylor (7). The family resides in Annapolis.

Kelly Gerlach Hovland is in her fourth season as the assistant coach of the Navy women’s golf program in 2015-16.

In 2014-15, Hovland helped Navy lower its team average by 30 strokes from the previous year and Navy placed third at the Patriot League Women’s Golf Championship.

With the arrival of Navy’s first fully recruited class, Hovland helped coach four Navy freshmen to top-15 finishes at the Patriot League Championship. Additionally, Navy lowered its program-best scores for both a single round (315) and for a 54-hole tournament (961) in 2014-15.

Christine Walker became the second Midshipmen to earn All-Patriot League Second-Team honors after placing 10th at the league championship.

In 2013-14, Hovland helped Navy lowered its team average the previous season by seven strokes and sophomore Renata Bucher became the first Navy women’s golfer to earn All-Patriot League honors. Navy also shaved 26 strokes off its total score at the 2014 Patriot League Championship from the previous season’s league meet.

During the introductory 2012-13 season, Hovland helped the Midshipmen to a third-place finish at the inaugural Patriot League

Championships, despite having the services of no recruited athletes. Bucher, a freshman, led the team in stroke average and was named to the WGCA Scholar All-America Team.

Hovland, a Sparta, Ill., native, is a 2007 graduate of Southern Illi-nois University where she earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s degree in public administration. While at SIU, she served as a two-time captain of the women’s golf team, leading the Salukis to the 2007 Missouri Valley Conference title and a berth in the NCAA Championships.

As a freshman in 2004, Hovland won the Missouri Valley Confer-ence individual title and earned All-MVC honors all four seasons of competition. She was a two-time Academic All-American (2007 and 2008) and was a three-time member of the Missouri Valley Conference All-Scholar Team. She was also named to the Missouri Valley Conference All-Centennial Team, which honored the top 20 golfers in conference history.

Following her career at SIU, Hovland began a career in public policy that included positions in both state and federal govern-ment as well as the private sector, which precipitated her move to Washington, D.C.

Hovland is Class A LPGA Professional.

Along with duties as assistant coach for the women’s program, Hovland also serves as an assistant professional at the United States Naval Academy Golf Club.

The former Kelly Gerlach is married to Ben Hovland. They are the parents of a newborn daughter, Harper. The family resides in Washington, D.C.

patriot league

Now in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 24 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Boston University, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Loyola and Navy as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown, MIT and Richmond as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. The Patriot League will celebrate its 25th Anniversary as an all-sport conference during the 2015-16 season.

Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League also had 92 percent of its teams score above the national APR average in the most recent data, and 101 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The Patriot League’s mission is simple: to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society. During the 2014-15 academic year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams have accomplished the following:

H 101 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Public Recognition Awards for ranking in the top 10 percent of their sport in Academic Progress Rate (APR), with 88 of those squads earning perfect scores.

H The Patriot League ranked second among all conferences in Public Recognition Awards, while Bucknell, Lafayette and Colgate all placed in the top six nationally.

H 92 percent of Patriot League teams scored above the national average in APR, while more than 70 percent had at least a 990 score in the multi-year rate.

H Eleven student-athletes earned Capital One Academic All-America recognition, including first-team accolades for Navy’s Tom Buffone (Track and Field) and Ellen Bradford (Swimming and Diving), American’s Jen Dumiak (Women’s Basketball) and Fordham’s Brett Biestek (Football).

H Navy’s Tom Buffone (Track and Field) and Loren Generi (Women’s Lacrosse) and Lafayette’s Cory Spera (Baseball) earned NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships.

H Buffone and Dumiak were named the Corvias Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year honorees, respectively.

H Thirty-four student-athletes received Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District recognition.

H There were 2,745 student-athletes on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2014-15, including 217 with a semester GPA of at least 4.0.

H Bucknell’s Ryan Frazier (Men’s Basketball) and Andrea Siefert (Women’s Rowing) each received the Patriot League Award of Outstanding Leadership and Character, while Lehigh’s Ashley Blanks (Women’s Soccer) was named the League’s Sportsmanship Award winner.

H Four Patriot Leaguers were named Senior CLASS Award finalists, with Colgate’s Caroline Brawner (Women’s Soccer) and Army West Point’s Sam Somers (Men’s Lacrosse) earning first-team recognition.

H Brawner was also one of the League’s nominations for the NCAA Woman of the Year award along with Boston University’s Valentina Cerda Eimbcke (Field Hockey).

H Navy won the Corvias Patriot League Presidents’ Cup for the third time in the last four years.

H The Mids also won the men’s title while Boston University repeated as women’s champion.

H Loyola won a pair of NCAA Tournament games to become the first Patriot League women’s lacrosse team to advance to the quarterfinal round, and also finished in the top 10 of the IWLCA Coaches Poll.

H Twenty-four Patriot Leaguers were named All-Americans in team sports, includding Navy’s Joseph Greenspan as a first-team selection in men’s soccer.

H Four Patriot Leaguers competed at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, and Lehigh’s Elizabeth Weiler became the League’s first female All-American since 2005.

H Lehigh’s Ryan Mahalsky became the first Patriot Leaguer since 2007-08 and sixth all-time to compete at the NCAA Championships for both cross country and outdoor track and field in the same season.

H Bucknell’s Emma Levendoski competed in both the 100-meter and 200-meter backstroke at the NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship.

H A League record nine student-athletes were selected in the Major League Lacrosse (MLL) Draft entering the 2015 season, with Army West Point’s John Glesener, Loyola’s Nikko Pontrello and Colgate’s Ryan Walsh among the top 11 picks.

H Navy’s Joseph Greenspan and Boston University’s Dominique Badji were both selected in the first four rounds of the Major League Soccer (MLS) Draft.

H Five Patriot Leaguers were taken in the Major League Baseball (MLB) First-Year Player Draft, with Lehigh’s Justin Pacchioli and Navy’s Stephen Moore each selected in the 10th round.
