The Olivet College women’s golf team captured its secondstraight Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA)championship in 2007. With six golfers from last year’s teamreturning in 2008, the obvious goal for the Comets is to “three-peat” and win anotherchampionship.

Along with winning thechampionship each of the last twoyears, Olivet has also won theMIAA’s playoff during the springand advanced to the NCAADivis ion I I I Nat ionalChampionships. In 2007, theComets placed ninth, while in2008, they slipped two spots tofinish in 11th-place. Therefore, another goal for Olivet is to getback to the nat ionalchampionships next May andfinish higher in the standings.

Leading the way for theComets in 2008 are seniorsTrisha McKim (DeWit t ) andLindsay Pipkin (White Lake/Lakeland). The duo has been thefoundation for the success of thewomen’s golf program.

McKim and Pipkin are each three-time All-MIAA golfers. McKimwas a 2005 and 2006 first-team selection and a 2007 second-teamselection. Pipkin has earned first-team honors three times alongwith being a 2006-07 All-Great Lakes Region selection.

MICHIGAN INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION

The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association(MIAA) is America’s o ldest col legiate ath let icconference.

The 2008-09 school year marks the 122ndconsecutive year of operation for the NCAA Division IIIaffiliated conference. The MIAA was founded March 24,1888. From the very beginning, the MIAA has conductedfull-season championships in multiple sports. Therehave been changes in some of the sports (bicycle racingand Indian club juggling have long since disappeared, and basketball did not even exist in 1888), but thesechanges have served to develop the MIAA into one ofAmerica’s finest NCAA Division III conferences, todayoffering 18 sports for men and women.

The MIAA’s continuity is noteworthy. Of the 12schools that have had full membership, eight are stillmembers — Adrian, Albion, Alma, Calvin, Hope,Kalamazoo, Olivet, and Saint Mary’s. Significantly, notone of these eight colleges has ever belonged to anyother formal league. Albion and Olivet were chartermembers although Albion is the only member to holdcontinuous membership. Ex-members are MichiganState University (1888-1907), Eastern MichiganUniversity (1892-1926), Hillsdale College (1888-1960),and Defiance College (1997-2000).

The MIAA’s membership list went unchanged from1960 until 1997 when the Defiance College of Ohio andSaint Mary’s College of Indiana were invited to join. Italso marked the first time that the league addedmembers outside the state of Michigan. The leaguestipulated, however, that the name of the conferencewould not change. The inaugural year of currentmembers are: Adrian (1908), Albion (1888), Alma(1902), Calvin (1953), Hope (1926), Kalamazoo (1896),Olivet (1888), and Saint Mary’s (1997).

The MIAA marked a historic note in 2002 whenthe league accepted Wisconsin Lutheran College ofMilwaukee as an associate member for the purpose ofcompeting in football. Wisconsin Lutheran left the MIAAafter the 2007 season to join the Northern AthleticsConference.

Trine Universi ty of Angola, Ind., became aconference member in 2004-05 upon its acceptance asa provisional NCAA member.
