The local committee has done a remarkable job in pullingall of this together and I would like to congratulate eachand every one of them. I am really looking forward to whatshould be a fantastic few days and of course to welcoming you all to this wonderful corner of England.

To you all I would like to say - relax, enjoy the scenery andhospitality that awaits, and to the competitors the verybest of luck to each and every one of you and may thebest man or woman win!

4 2011 ISDS World Sheep Dog Trials

Welcome From the World Trials President

I am delighted to welcome you all to the Lowther Estatehere in Cumbria for the 2011 World Sheep Dog Trials, Food& Country Festival. This is the first time this wonderfulevent has been held in England and I am extremely proudthat the ISDS has done me, and Cumbria, the honour ofacting as your host. You are all most welcome.

As some of you may be aware I am very fond of dogs myself. I have eight at home of which two are Border Collies and great companions they are too.

Everything of course starts with the parade through thestreets of Penrith. This will be led by the Penrith TownBand, the Countess and I will follow in a horse drawn carriage driven by my good friend George Bowman, a 19-times World Carriage Driving Champion, and we will befollowed by all 240 competing dogs and their handlers. Iunderstand that at least some of the handlers will be wearing national costume, and that the team members willbe carrying their national flags. I am really looking forwardto what should be a wonderfully colourful spectacle that willtruly set the scene for what is to come in the four days thatfollow.

As well as the Trials themselves there will be a CountryFestival marquee which will incorporate a 'Live Craft Village,' in which experts in traditional country crafts andskills will be working; a Food Festival to showcase some ofthe best local produce the county has to offer, and, an animal marquee which will house some of our Cumbrianbreeds, like the Herdwick and Rough Fell sheep of whichwe are rightly so proud. In addition there will be a full programme of events in the Display Arena which looks likebeing a real hive of activity throughout all four days.

I was delighted to learn recently that television coveragehas been secured with programmes going out eachevening on More4 TV to show the day’s events at the Trials, not to mention the filming for part of the BBC’sCountryfile programme on the Friday and an appearanceby BBC TV’s Matt Baker and Gus Dermody from ‘One Manand His Dog’.

52011 ISDS World Sheep Dog Trials

This 2011 event is the fourthWorld Trial to be staged by theInternational Sheep Dog Society, continuing a very successful andpopular format. Here you willsee 240 dogs showing their verybest, working in partnership with205 different handlers from 23nations. All have had to succeedin national selection to gain aplace on the entry list, and all have had to work hard to arrive here ready for competition over four days.

This sheepdog trial is not a race between dogs and sheep– it is about showing the care, skill and dedication of a manor woman working with a dog to look after the flock as he,or she, has for hundreds of years. This World Trial is a culmination of one of the International Sheep Dog Society’sobjectives – to bring the world together to support andenjoy this wonderful dog, and find the very best there is.

Norman Lorton — Chief Executive, International Sheep Dog Society

The Trials Committee

The final authority for the competition at this World Trialrests with the ISDS Trials Committee. The members are:

Chairman, Jim Easton; English President, Tim Longton; Welsh President, Malcolm Ellis; Scottish President, Wullie Cook; and Irish President, Con McGarry. Assisted by Secretary, Norman Lorton.

It is a delight for me to welcomeyou all to the 2011 World SheepDog Trials, held at the beautifulLowther Estate. We are indebtedto the Lowther Family for theirkind permission to use the estateand work in partnership with theISDS on this great event. I wishto express my thanks especially toMr Tim Longton, Mr Nigel Davis, MrJohn Palmer, Miss Clare Savins and Mr Richard Price, plusmany others on the organising committee. It is their hardwork and endeavour, supported by a great team, that hasbrought us all here today. We are all very grateful for the financial assistance of all the sponsors listed in this programme, whose support has enabled it all to take place.

The International Sheep Dog Society has played a key rolein developing the world sheepdog community. Some 36years ago I was delighted to be involved in giving demonstrations and training seminars first in the Netherlands and then many other Continental Europeancountries. The purpose was to show the intelligence andworking ability of our ISDS Border Collie. From these smallbeginnings has grown a strong European and Worldsheepdog community.

I express my thanks to all who have contributed to bring ushere today, and wish the very best to all handlers and dogsat this great World Championship.

This World Trial also represents a farewell event for theISDS Chief Executive, Norman Lorton. Norman retires on30th September and his successor, Simon West, who ishere at these World Trials, takes over the following day.

Norman took over from Philip Hendry in April 2001 and immediately had responsibility for steering the Societythrough the difficult period of the national foot-and-mouthcrisis. The Society survived, and through Norman’s fore-sight, working with two senior Welsh officers, he spear-headed the first ISDS World Trials in 2002 at Bala. Fromthat success followed each of the triennial World Trials.

Although it is the local committee who do all the hard workstaging this event, it is Norman and his team in Bedfordwho plan the entry of all 240 competing dogs, and thenoversee all the Judging and results service. The ISDS istoday a strong and successful organisation and we are allvery grateful for his ten years of leadership and manage-ment. Please join me in thanking Norman for his many contributions to the success of the World Trial and theISDS. We wish him all the best and good health.

Greetings from the International Sheep Dog Society

Page 6: 2011 World Trial Souvenir Programme

It is a great honour to be invitedto act as Chairman for such aprestigious event as the WorldTrials and I am most grateful toTim Longton, our ISDS EnglishPresident, for providing me withthis wonderful opportunity.

It is fair to describe the World Trials as the World Cup and Olympic Games of the sheepdog trialling world rolled into one. The very best of the bestfrom all corners of the globe will be competing here inCumbria and it will be a tremendous accolade for theperson who is crowned World Champion on the evening ofSunday 18th September - the very pinnacle of achievement for both sheep dog and handler.

In addition to the Trials themselves, there is a full programme of events in our Food and Country FestivalMarquees and Display Arena. Each evening to help every-one relax there will be live entertainment and food availableon site. The music will range from local ‘fiddlers’ to thehighly regarded Soul Survivors who will be appearing onSaturday evening. I am also hoping that some of the doghandlers can be persuaded to display their undoubted musical talents as well on Friday evening! Time will tell.

An event of this magnitude takes a huge amount of timeand hard work to organise and I would like to thank eachand every one of the superb committee it has been myprivilege and pleasure to work with for all their efforts. Iwould also like to thank the Earl and Countess of Lonsdalefor their advice, assistance and support which has been sofreely given throughout, our judges, stewards, volunteersand last, but certainly by no means least, our sponsors fortheir incredible generosity. Thank you all.

To each and every one of you a very warm welcome to theWorld Trials, Food and Country Festival 2011. Relax, enjoythe wonderful scenery and hospitality that awaits you, andthe competition and other events that have been providedfor your enjoyment. I hope you all head home on Sundayevening with some wonderful memories of your time spentwith us here in Cumbria.

Welcome to this wonderful part ofthe world – the heart of Cumbria onthe edge of England’s Lake District. This is true sheep dog country. Thequality of our venue for these WorldTrials is already recognised havingsuccessfully staged the InternationalTrials in 2009.

We hope to build on that success. Over the next four days,240 competitors from 23 nations will pit their wits againstNorth Country Mules. This represents the ultimate global testfor handlers and their trusted dogs. On Sunday, one of thoseteams will become the World Champion. The honour will berichly deserved – so too will the solid gold whistle that goeswith it!

While competitive trialling is at the heart of this great event,we can also promise non-stop support action, entertainmentand excitement in the form of our Food & Country Festival, providing something of interest for all the family – young andnot so young.

We have also pulled off something of a coup in securing highprofile television coverage for the World Trials through liveevent and sport specialists North One Television, who willutilise high-tech production techniques, including High Definition, super slo-mo, fence and pen cameras and dogand sheep telemetry. More4 will exclusively broadcast theWorld Trials, providing nine hours of coverage throughoutthe event – a two-hour programme at 7pm each day, plus anevent highlights show. This will not only provide a massiveboost to the World Trials, but also the Cumbrian region andthe world of sheep dog trialling in general.

Of course, events such as this take many, many hundreds ofhours to organise and stage, and while it is impossible tothank every single individual involved, I would like to pay aspecial tribute to the local organising committee, who haveworked tirelessly for the past 18 months and more to organise what is one of the greatest countryside events ofthe year. You will see their details in this programme. Thankyou one and all. My thanks also go to the Earl and Countessof Lonsdale for their kind permission to stage the Trials atLowther and who have given us their whole hearted supportfrom the outset, and, of course, all our valued sponsors, without whose support this event would not have been possible, in particular our main sponsor Ceri Rundle, of CSJSpecialist Canine Feeds.

To all the dog handlers I say: Run well, run true! To all ourvisitors, I say: Enjoy the superb spectacle, the amazing atmosphere, savour this wonderful area – stay awhile andvisit. Let the 2011 World Trials, Food & Country Festivalbegin!

There are 23 Nations represented by thenames of handlers and dogs you will findlisted. All the world’s countries, wherethere is a recent history of sheepdog handling, were invited to attend. The numbers from each nation were set by theISDS and broadly indicate the level of activity in each country. There were somethat could not travel because of the UKquarantine regulations and other, newsheepdog nations still working up to thisstandard of competition. The handlersand dogs have been ranked by their homeorganisation from qualifying competition in2010. Therefore, for most nations, theserepresent the best.

It is possible that a handler appears twicein the programme – i.e. he or she hasqualified two dogs. In addition, every handler, whether entering with one or twoqualified dogs, is permitted to enter an Alternate dog. The reason for this is thatafter qualifying a whole year is a long timein a dog’s life (perhaps 7 years in humanterms) and the dog may not be fully fit orable to travel. Therefore the handler mayelect to run his or her Alternate dog, providing they inform the organisers thenight before their run. Alternate dogs arelisted in a separate table, under the number of the handlers qualified dog. Thecommentator will know if an Alternate dogis to run and will announce this.

The handlers’ run numbers have beencarefully randomized. Each nations’ dogswill be spread across different fields andover the two days. If a handler has twodogs then you will find that they are running on different fields and on differentdays. Being fully randomized does notmean that you will not find handlers fromthe same country with adjacent numbers;that does happen and it is due to statistical chance.

After some handler’s names you will seea (C) or a (T). Each nation of five ormore has selected a team of five different handlers with a nominateddog; these are typically the highestplaced in their nation. These five areentered to a Team Competition in whichtheir points from days one and two aretotalled to determine a winning nation.(C) indicates the team captain and (T)a team member.

About CumbriaCumbria was formed from the oldcounties of Cumberland, Westmorland, and part of North Lancashire, and is nowEngland's second largest county in size. Italso contains a small part of the YorkshireDales National Park.

A predominantly rural county, Cumbria ishome to the Lake District National Park, considered one of the most beautifulareas of the United Kingdom. The LakeDistrict is the largest of the UnitedKingdom's National Parks, and contains16 lakes (and many smaller tarns), morethan 150 high peaks, with four over 3000feet (the only mountains in England).Much of the county is mountainous, withthe highest point of the county (and ofEngland) being Scafell Pike.

The northern ranges of the Lake Districtconsist of Ordovician slate, about 500 million years old; the central ranges ofyounger volcanic rock; and a southernrange of limestone and other Silurianrock about 440 million years old. These highlands are dissected by U-shaped valleys, known as dales, containing thelakes, some of which are artificial and allbut one of which do not have the word“lake” in their names, being known in-stead as “meres” (Windermere, Gras-mere, Thirlmere) or “waters” (Ullswater,Wastwater, Coniston Water); the excep-tion is Bassenthwaite Lake. The animallife of the Lake District includes threeunique species of fish: the schelly, thevendace, and the char; and a number ofgolden eagles.

In Neolithic times, the Lake District was amajor source of stone axes, examples ofwhich have been found all over Britain. The primary site, on the slopes of theLangdale Pikes, is sometimes describedas a 'stone axe factory'.

factsThere are about a thousand stone circles inBritain, and a quarter ofthem are to be found inCumbria.

Her Majestys Theatre inCarlisle was the firstTheatre ever to be lit byelectricity in 1880.

2

The world ’s oldest manufacturing machinerystill in use is to be foundin Kendal at snuff makersSamuel Gawith and Company which usesplant made in 1750.

4The Lake District NationalPark is England's largestand covers 2292 squarekilometres / 885 squaremiles.

5Grasmere is famous forbeing the home of poetWilliam Wordsworth whocalled it "the loveliest spotthat man hath ever found."

6The village of WasdaleHead claims to have theHighest mountain in England (it is at the foot ofScafell Pike), the smallestchurch, the deepest lakeand the biggest liar. Thebiggest liar claim relates toWill Ritson who was alandlord of the WastwaterHotel (now the WasdaleHead Inn) who, during the19th century, told hugelyentertaining ‘shaggy dog’stories.

The Sheep Breeds of CumbriaThe Herdwick, the Rough Fell and their closeneighbour the Swaledale have been bred andreared to withstand the climate. The Herdwick andRough Fell in particular have been shepherdedgeneration on generation, possibly back to earlymedieval times, to their own hill territory or "heaf",to which they will always return. Many hill farmshave "fell rights" on which to pasture sheep, cattleand occasionally ponies. The North Country Mule is a cross breed common in Cumbria also.

Celts, Romans, Angles, and Vikings insuccession settled among the lakes, andit was the last of these who provided suchplace-name elements as “-thwaite”(clearing), “fell” (mountain with grazing),“gill” (ravine), and “force” (waterfall).

There are six National Nature Reserves,100 sites of Special Scientific Interest, over 50 delectable dales, and some fourhundred towns, villages and hamletswithin its 885 square miles of breathtakingcountryside.

The area has provided inspiration forgenerations of British and foreign artists, writers and musicians, including BeatrixPotter and William Wordsworth.

Historically, farming, in particular ofsheep, was the major industry in the region. The breed most closely associated with the area is the toughHerdwick.

There are some 50 stone circles in Cumbria, including some of the earlieststone circles in Britain. There is a range oftypes, from the vast monumental circlesat Castlerigg, Swinside and Long Meg, tothe standard early bronze age circles ofabout 100 ft in diameter as at Castertonand Elva Plain, to diminutive rings associated with alignments and burials. Some are associated with henge monuments such as Mayburgh.

Hadrian's Wall is the most importantmonument built by the Romans in Britain. It stretches seventy-three miles fromWallsend near Newcastle, across theneck of England to Bowness-on-Solway inNorth West Cumbria, and stands today asa reminder of the past glories of one ofthe world's greatest empires.

Semi-Finals C

ourse

152011 ISDS World Sheep Dog Trials

Understanding a Trial CourseThe qualifying and semi-finals course involves the handlerand dog working together to move five sheep (three un-marked and two marked with red collars) around a course. There are seven components of the course, each of whichis scored by the judges. (Note: The following is for guidance only).

1. Outrun: In the outrun the dog is sent out either to the leftor right from the post while the handler remains at the post. The dog should not stop until it has reached the point ofbalance behind thesheep, and shouldbe far enough awayfrom the sheep soas not to disturbthem. The point ofbalance is where thedog will lift the sheepin the direction of thefirst set of gates.

2. Lift: At the end ofthe Outrun, the dogwill either come to afull stop or merelyslow down. The dogwill then approach thesheep smoothly, cau-tiously and steadily, taking control in a firmand quiet manner. Thesheep should move ina direct line to the firstobstacle (gates).

3. Fetch: The sheepmust be brought at asteady pace and in astraight line from theplace of lifting to thefirst gates and there-after in a straight line tothe handler/post. If thesheep deviate from theline they should bebrought back to that lineas soon as practical. If the sheep fail to go through thegates, no retry of the gates is allowed.

4. Drive: The drive is approximately 450 yards long over atriangular course and consists of two sets of gates throughwhich the dog drives the sheep. The drive starts immedi-ately the sheep have passed behind the handler/post andends when the sheep enter the shedding ring. The sheepare required to go in straight lines between the obstaclesand reasonable turns at the post and at both gates are ex-pected. If the sheep fail to go through the gates, a secondattempt at either gate is not allowed.

5. Shedding: Two unmarked sheep are shed (separated)in the shedding ring and held away from the remainingthree sheep. The dog must show control of the two un-marked sheep, either in or outside the ring. On completionof the shed, the handler must reunite the sheep before pro-ceeding to the pen.

6. Penning: The handler must proceed to thepen, leaving the dog to bring the sheep to thepen. The handler stands at the gate holding therope and must not let go of the rope while the dogworks the sheep into the pen. When the sheepare in the pen, the handler must completely closethe gate before releasing the sheep. After releas-ing the sheep, the handler must close and fasten

the gate and goto the sheddingring.

7. Single: Thedog brings thesheep from thepen to theshedding ring. One of twomarked sheepwill be shed(separated)within theshedding ringand held awayfrom the re-maining foursheep untilthe judgesare satisfied.

No points areawarded forany phase ofthe work thathas not beencompletedwithin thetime limit of15 minutes.

Switzerland has neverhad a competitor in the

final of a World Trial. Buttheir rise in prominencein sheep dog trialling is

evidenced by Urs Imhof winning the 2010 Continental

Girls AllowedThere are few names as well-known as ‘Cropper’ in sheep dogtrialling. One of the rising stars isChloe Cropper.

In 2008, 16-year-old Chloe wasthe youngest ever competitor at aWorld Sheepdog Trials. Threeyears on, Chloe is the secondyoungest World Trial competitor(Robbie Welsh being younger) &among the most talented sheepdog handlers in England.

Chloe has literally been born into the sport and she looksset to fulfil a destiny the family name bestows upon her. With countless trial wins to her name, Chloe’s trophiesare rapidly accumulating. Already she has won the prestigious BBC’s ‘One Man and His Dog’ Young Handlercompetition and recently finished 3rd at the 2011 EnglishNational Championship.

It seems that in a sport where age, experience and maturity count, Chloe demonstrates there are always ex-ceptions to the rule.

You!

Swedish by birth, but now callingNorway home, Karin Mattsson burstinto prominence in 2008 when shesecured two places in the semi-finals at the World Trial with herdogs, Sammie and Lyn. She wenton to place seventh in the final withSammie; the only ‘all-girl’ team inthe final.

Karin has been a pioneer for young woman triallists onthe Continent. She represented Sweden internationallyfrom 2004-2006. Since moving to Norway, Karin hasbeen selected for the Norwegian team every year since2007. Twice she has won the Continental ChampionshipYoung Handlers competition; all of these achievementswith “super” Sammie. If there were any doubts about theskill of young women handlers, Karin has clearly laidthese doubts to rest.

In 2011, Karin will bring her top team of girls to Cumbria. It will be Sammie’s swansong as she is nearing retirement. The effervescent Karin will be hoping Sammie can match or better her achievements from 2008as it would be a fitting end to a remarkable career.

AAlleedd OOwweenn,, TTwwoo--TTiimmee WWoorrlldd CChhaammppiioonnIt is a remarkable feat to win a World Championship butone modest farmer from Wales has done just that - and notonce, but twice. In so doing, Aled Owen has firmly securedhis reputation as one of the all-time greats in the sport.

Fresh on the heels of winning the2007 International Supreme, theholy grail for U.K.-based workingsheepdogs, Aled won the 2008World Championship with Roy, thedog he will again compete with atthe 2011 World Trials. Roy’s father,Bob, won the World Trial in 2002.

A farmer by trade, Aled divides histime among his farming duties, his sheepdogs, and thefamily enterprises of Ewe-phoria, where he gives sheep-dog, sheep and sheep shearing demonstrations, and theadrenaline pumping off-road quad biking tours at Adventure Mountain.

The pressure to win a third World Championship mustsurely be enormous. True to form, though, Aled bearsboth the blessings and burdens of fame in his typicaldown-to-earth manner. When Aled steps onto the field thisweek, he won’t be thinking of the competitors who haverun before him or his history with the event. He’ll be think-ing about getting the job done without fanfare but certainly with polish.

Winston Churchill said “History is written by the victors.”Win or lose, the partnership between Aled and Roy has al-ready found its place in the history book but is there yet an-other chapter to be written about this dynamic team?

[Owing to space, I will not go deeply intothe life of Hogg here. For those inter-ested in more, please see InternationalSheepdog News (the magazine of theInternational Sheepdog Society),March/April 2011].

James Hogg, known as "The EttrickShepherd," Scottish poet and novelist, was shaped by his birth and circum-stances. Born into a family of small farm-ers and shepherds, he lived most of hislife in the beautiful countryside amongthe rivers of the Borders: the Ettrick, theYarrow, Lethan Water, and DouglasBurn. His mother was a renowned story-teller, and had a great influence onHogg's poetry and novels, which werefilled with the imagination, the legendand the mystery of the Borders.

Hogg also looms large in sheepdog his-tory, not for his imagination, but for hisadmiration of the shepherd's dog and hisability to convey that appreciation in hiswriting as a journalist. Sheepdogs wereoften his favorite subjects, and he de-voted an entire chapter to them in TheShepherd's Calendar (William Black-wood, Edinburgh, 1829). We'd like topresent a few of those stories here. Toquote Hogg himself, "the anecdotes ofthese animals are all so much alike, thatwere I but to relate the thousandth partof those I have heard, they would oftenlook very much like repetitions. I shalltherefore only mention one or two of themost singular, which I know to be wellauthenticated." I expect that you will rec-ognize the Border Collie of today inthese stories.

“A curious story that appeared lately of adog belonging to a shepherd namedJohn Hoy, has brought sundry similarones to my recollection, which I am surecannot fail to be interesting to those un-acquainted with the qualities of that mostdocile and affectionate of the whole ani-mal creation—the shepherd's dog.

The story alluded to was shortly this.John was at a sacrament of theCovenanters, and being loath to leavethe afternoon sermon, and likewiseobliged to have the ewes at the bught[pen] by a certain hour, gave his dog aquiet hint at the outskirts of the congre-gation, and instantly she went away, took the hills, and gathered the wholeflock of ewes to the bught, as carefully

and quietly as if her master had beenwith her, to the astonishment of a thou-sand beholders, for the ewes lay scat-tered over two large and steep hills. This John Hoy was my uncle...I haveoften heard him tell an anecdote of an-other dog called Nimble: One driftyday, in the seventy-four, after gatheringthe ewes of Chapelhope, he found thathe wanted [was missing] about anhundred of them. He again betookhimself to the heights, and sought forthem the whole day without being ableto find them, and began to suspect thatthey were covered over with snow insome ravine. Towards the evening itcleared up a little, and as a last re-source he sent away Nimble. She had

found the scent of them on the hillwhile her master was looking for them;but not having received orders to bringthem, she had not the means of com-municating the knowledge she pos-sessed. But as soon as John gave herthe gathering word, she went away, hesaid, like an arrow out of a bow, and inless than five minutes he beheld her atabout a mile's distance, bringing themround a hill, called the Middle, cockingher tail behind them, and apparentlyvery happy at having got the opportu-nity of terminating her master's disqui-etude with so much ease.”

“My dog was always my companion. Iconversed with him the whole day—Ishared every meal with him, and myplaid in the time of a shower; the con-sequence was, that I generally had the

best dogs in all the country. The first re-markable one that I had was named Sir-rah. He was beyond all comparison thebest dog I ever saw. He was of a surlyunsocial temper—disdained all flattery, and refused to be caressed; but his at-tention to his master's commands andinterests never will again be equalled byany of the canine race.”

“Hector was quite incapable of perform-ing the same feats among the sheepthat his father [Sirrah] did; but as far ashis judgment served him, he was adocile and obliging creature. He hadone singular quality, of keeping true tothe charge to which he was set. If wehad been shearing or sorting sheep inany way, when a division was turnedout, and Hector got the word to attendthem, he would have done it pleasantly, for a whole day without the least symp-tom of weariness. No noise or hurryabout the fold, which brings every otherdog from his business, had the least ef-fect on Hector, save that it made him alittle troublesome on his own charge, and set him to a-running round andround them, turning them in at the cor-ners, out of a sort of impatience to beemployed as well as his baying neigh-bours at the fold.”

“A single shepherd and his dog will ac-complish more in gathering a stock ofsheep from a highland farm, than twentyshepherds could do without dogs; and itis a fact, that, without this docile animal, the pastoral life would be a mere blank.Without the shepherd's dog, the wholeof the open mountainous land here inScotland would not be worth a six-pence. It would require more hands tomanage a stock of sheep, gather themfrom the hills, force them into housesand folds, and drive them to markets, than the profits of the whole stock wouldbe capable of maintaining. Well may theshepherd feel an interest in his dog; heit is indeed that earns the family'sbread, of which he is himself contentwith the smallest morsel; always grate-ful, and always ready to exert his utmostabilities in his master's interest. Neitherhunger, fatigue, nor the worst of treat-ment, will drive him from his side; he willfollow him through fire and water as thesaying is, and through every hardship, without murmur or repining, till he liter-ally fall down dead at his feet.”

James Hogg, The Ettrick Shepherd 1770-1835

The finals course involves the handler and dog working together to movetwenty sheep (fifteen unmarked and five marked with red collars) around acourse. The main components of the course, each of which is scored by thefour judges, are as follows: (Note: The following is for guidance only).

Outrun 1

In the first outrun the dog is sent out to theright or left of the course, as decided by theTrials Committee before the Trial. All com-petitors will run on that side (the second outrun will be to the other side). The handlerremains at the post. The dog should not stopuntil it has reached the point of balance behind the sheep, and should be far enoughaway from the sheep so as not to disturbthem. The point of balance is where the dogwill lift the sheep in the direction of the firstset of gates.

LIFT 1

At the end of the Outrun, the dog will eithercome to a full stop or merely slow down.Thedog will then approach the sheep smoothly, cautiously and steadily, taking control in afirm and quiet manner. The sheep shouldmove in a direct line to the first obstacle(gates).

No points are awarded forany phase of the work thathas not been completedwithin the prescribed timelimit.

Time limit = 30 minutes.No extensions.

FETCH 1

The sheep must be brought at a steadypace and in a straight line from the placeof lifting to the first gates and thereafter ina straight line to the turn back pole. If thesheep deviate from the line they shouldbe brought back to that line as soon aspractical. If the sheep fail to go throughthe gates, no retry of the gates is al-lowed. The first fetch is complete whenthe sheep have reached the turn backpole. The dog having reached the polewill then be redirected for the secondpacket of 10 sheep.

OUTRun, Lift andFetch 2

The dog is turned back for the secondpacket of sheep on the opposite side ofthe course to the first packet. The secondpacket of sheep should be broughtthrough the gate in a straight line towardsa point parallel to the first lot of sheep. The dog will unite the two packets ofsheep by gathering the first lot and bring-ing them to the second lot. The sheepmust be united before the end of thefetch. At the end of the fetch the handlerwill move the sheep around the post/be-hind the handler as close as is practicaland in a steady and smooth manner.

DRIVE

The drive is approximately 600 yardslong over a triangular course and consists of two sets of gates throughwhich the dog drives the sheep. Thedrive starts immediately the sheep havepassed behind the handler/post and endswhen all of the sheep enter the sheddingring. The sheep are required to go instraight lines between the obstacles andreasonable turns at the post and at bothgates are expected. If the sheep fail to gothrough the gates, a second attempt ateither gate is not allowed. The handlerwill remain at the post until the first of thesheep is in the shedding ring.

Shedding

Fifteen unmarked sheep are to be shedoff (separated) from the five red collaredsheep within the shedding ring. Thesheep are moved between the handlerand his/her dog allowing unmarkedsheep to be shed off and leave the ringwhile keeping the marked sheep in theshedding ring. Manoeuvring to take the 5red collared sheep off in one go from theother 15 is not permitted. Should anymarked sheep leave the shedding ringand join any unmarked sheep alreadyshed off, the unmarked sheep with whichthe marked sheep have joined will bebrought into the ring and shedding resumed. Once the 15 unmarked sheephave been shed off, the handler may proceed to the pen. Before penning, thehandler may use the dog to remove theunmarked sheep to a safe distance sothey do not to interfere with the penningof the marked sheep.

Penning

The handler must proceed to the pen, leaving the dog to bring the sheep to thepen. The handler stands at the gate holding the rope and must not let go ofthe rope while the dog works the sheepinto the pen. When the sheep are in thepen, the handler must completely closethe gate within the time limit. Afterrealeasing the sheep, the handler mustclose and fasten the gate to concludetheir run.

Can a Modern-day Ettrick Shepherd Win a Rare Hat Trick?

The ‘original’ Ettrick Shepherd, James Hogg, the Scottish poetand novelist, looms large in sheepdog history. Over two centuries later, a modern day Ettrick shepherd is quietly revisingsheepdog history. This is three-time International SupremeChampion and six-time Scottish National Champion, BobbyDalziel.

A bone fide Ettrick shepherd, Bobby and his close-knit, yet small, team of dogs work the Scottish braes almost every day of theirlives. His dogs are legendary around the globe. Wisp and Dryden Joe are two whose names liberally roll off the tonguewhen talking about ‘great’ dogs. Another gifted dog, and the oneBobby will run this week, is 7-year-old Joe.

At the age of 2, Joe won the Supreme Championship, makinghim one of the youngest dogs to have ever won this prestigiousevent. Three years later, in 2009, he won the Scottish NationalChampionship. He repeated this win in 2011 when he capturedhis second Scottish National title.

No dog in the history of the World Trial has ever won a NationalChampionship, a Supreme Championship and a World Championship. Joe is the only dog on the planet that has achance at this. Would there be anything more thrilling for the history of the shepherd’s dog to see an Ettrick Shepherd and hisdog, Joe, win this rare hat trick?

The Finals: Determining the WinnerThe results announced during the final will be the totalnumber of Judges Points awarded to each competitor. However, the competition will be decided usingMerit Points.

Calculating Merit PointsEach of the four judges will rank each competitor inorder of Judges Points from 1st to 16th. The highestplaced competitor (i.e. ranked 1st overall on JudgesPoints) will receive 16 Merit Points. The second placedcompetitor will receive 15 Merit Points, and so forth.

If a judge has awarded identical Judges Points to twodifferent competitors, the Merit Points are summed andthen divided evenly between the two competitors. Forexample. if the top two competitors receive the sameJudges Points, the Merit Points for each competitorwould be : 16 (for 1st place) + 15 (2nd place) ÷ 2 =15.5 Merit Points each.

The sum of the Merit Points, calculated by Judge foreach dog, decides the final ranking with the highestnumber coming first. For example, if each Judgeplaced the same dog in top place it would receive(16+16+16+16) = 64 Merit Points, the maximum scorepossible.

In the event of Merit Points being equal for any dog thefinal order will be decided by the total number ofJudges’ Points awarded. If these are equal then pointson Outrun, Lift and Fetch added together will decide.
