Good evening everyone.

A final in our first season of football sponsorship in

Gibraltar. Can’t ask for much more than that! Working

with the football club, we’ve achieved a lot together in

a few months:

• Record attendances at Second Division games

• Mascot opportunity (unique in Gibraltar)

• Programme at each match (unique in Gibraltar)

• Beer and burgers for fans (unique in Gibraltar)

• Regular email of Magpie News to supporters (unique in Gibraltar)

• Tripled our Facebook likes

• Doubled our Twitter followers

• Home shirt in Sports City in Main Street

• Final of the Second Division Cup and third in the league

And best of all, a whole lot of fun. If you are reading this then you are clearly part of this journey. Thank you. Plenty more to come I hope. Stick with us.

We have become the number one estate agent in Gibraltar by hard work, great team ethic, professionalism and a never say die attitude. Credentials that we have in common with the Magpies.

I am pleased to report that we have renewed our sponsorship of the club for the 2016/17 season. I urge those who can, to join our sponsorship team. No other club offers so much energy in its media promotions.

Tonight will be a tough match, just look at the table on the left, our opponents are the only unbeaten team in the league. Plus they are the current Division 2 Cup holders. Plus they are as good as promoted. Well done to them. We’ve just got to achieve something that no other second division team has achieved before this season. Did someone mention 5,000/1 chance?

Sir Geoff Hurst, Gordon Banks, Martin Peters and George Cohen explain how victory at Wembley Stadium changed their lives.

It was the room where the draw for the 1966 World Cup took place, the venue for the team banquet to celebrate the greatest day in English football history and, on the top table, was a gleaming Jules Rimet Trophy.

Looking on were four of England’s heroes from that day: Sir Geoff Hurst, Gordon Banks, Martin Peters and

George Cohen. It was perhaps forgivable, then, that the fan inside Greg Dyke, the current chairman of the Football Association, briefly overrode protocol and could not resist lifting the 50-year-old trophy aloft in a one-handed pose to recreate the iconic celebration of captain Bobby Moore.

Exactly half a century will have passed on July 30 this year since Hurst’s hat-trick sealed a 4-2 final win against West Germany and Tuesday's gathering marked the launch of a year of celebrations.

Banks, who is now 78, said that just entering the Royal Garden Hotel evoked memories of how the team were initially unable even to access the building after the match because Kensington High Street was so crammed with fans.

He then recalled the “absolutely shocking” protocol that said the wives and girlfriends of their day had to wait in a nearby room while the men ate their victory meal. “Every single thing has changed dramatically,” Hurst said. A gleaming Jules Rimet Trophy was on display.

Bobby Charlton and Ray Wilson were even able to relax by going shopping in Golders Green on the morning of the final. “Players were on similar wages to the man on the street,” Hurst said. “I love the modern game – it’s great, but the changes are unbelievably different.”

Hurst, though, remains justifiably adamant about one constant. It is that the squad of 1966 contained a quality of player that would thrive in any era. Hurst rates Moore, Banks, Bobby Charlton and Jimmy Greaves as “all-time greats” but is also emphatic when asked whether he would get into the England team of today. “What a stupid question – you’re kidding aren’t you?” he said, smiling.

THE BEST FINAL EVER - 1966

“Of course I would. Would I score more goals? Yes. They say it’s tougher today. I think that’s nonsense. The game has changed to help attacking football. You can’t get tackled from behind. You look back at some of those archaic matches from the Sixties and Seventies, the villainous teams, it was astonishing.”

Hurst also pinpoints the mentality of the 1966 squad and how the younger players, men like Peters and Alan Ball, were so fearless in grasping their opportunity. “People ask what it is like to win,” he said. “The first emotion is relief. The overall enjoyment of it is phenomenal and it lasts forever.”

George Cohen, the right back, says that the journey from the team hotel to Wembley remains especially vivid. “You couldn’t actually get to the gate to go through on the coach,” he says. “I remember there was one banner saying ‘Nobby Stiles for Prime Minister’.”

Cohen was especially close to Greaves, who so controversially lost his place to Hurst during the tournament after getting injured. “Jimmy is my oldest friend in professional football,” Cohen says. “I have never ever mentioned it to Jimmy. All these years have gone past. I couldn’t bring myself to ask him about it. He was

one of the greatest names in our game at the time. But Geoff’s performances proved that what we needed was what we got. We got a three-goal hero in the World Cup final. I don’t think we have ever stopped talking about it. When I go to the supermarket everybody says ‘Hello George’. People still want to know.”

The anecdotes will certainly flow over these next 12 months when a series of events will be held to commemorate the achievement. Money will also be raised for various charities as well as the players and their families. Given the wealth now in football, it is easy to forget that the squad of 1966 all had to earn a living once their playing careers were finished. Eight of the starting 11 subsequently auctioned off their winner’s medal. Dyke concedes that it was a generation of footballers who were not particularly well looked after.

“Anyone of my age will tell you it was one of the days of their life,” Dyke said. “Alf [Ramsey] announced we would win it and he never wavered. I couldn’t get a ticket and watched the final on a little black-and-

white telly at my aunt’s house. We have to make sure we tell those stories and keep them alive. I genuinely believe the building blocks are in place to one day soon emulate the ’66 winners. We owe it to them. We owe it to a generation of teenage dreamers.”

Hurst shares that optimism. “Yes we can do it again – the unpredictability of the sport is something that captures us all,” he said. “Cynics say to me ‘you don’t want anyone to win it again, you don’t want anyone to score three’, which is absolute nonsense. We are as passionate about England doing well as the man in the street. Having been there and done it, more so probably. We know how big it is. It changes your life.”

Blackpool 4-3 Bolton Wanderers, 1953

“The Matthews Final', saw 38-year-old Stanley Matthews finally win the FA Cup, then the most prized trophy in club football. After several near misses, this looked to be his last chance, though he was still playing 12 years later.Blackpool had been 3-1 down after 55 minutes, and few believed they could recover. However, Stan Mortensen, scorer of the Seasiders' first goal, made it 3-2 when he converted Matthews' cross, and they were level in the 89th minute when Mortensen fired home a free-kick to complete his hat-trick. Bolton were hampered by an injury to wing-half Eric Bell, though he had still managed to score Wanderers' third from his position as passenger on the wing.

With 92 minutes on the clock, Matthews beat two defenders and crossed for South African left winger Bill Perry to complete the comeback. The old man was carried from the field.

Sunderland 1-0 Leeds, 1973

Sunderland were in the Second Division when they faced up against Don Revie's all-conquering Leeds side of the 70s.

Leeds, the holders, were the heaviest of favourites to pick up the trophy they won in 1972, but an inspired performance from Sunderland's goalkeeper Jim Montgomery - including a double save from Peter Lorimer and Trevor Cherry that has been ranked as one of the greatest of all-time - and a goal from Ian Porterfield sealed the biggest shock in the history of the competition's showpiece event.

Rokerites manager Bob Stokoe, a Geordie and a sworn enemy of Revie, wearing a red and white cap, staged a merry dance across the Wembley quagmire in celebration.

Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 Manchester City, 1981

The late John Bond led City to their last final for 30 years but they were denied by one of the first foreign imports to grace the English game.

The initial final had been a 1-1 draw with City midfielder Tommy Hutchison suffering the dubious honour of scoring at both ends. Argentine midfielder Ricky Villa scored first for Spurs only for Steve Mackenzie to rattle in a blockbuster for City, who took the lead in the 50th minute through striker Kevin Reeves.

ANYONE MENTION A FINAL???..?

Page 13: Division 2 Cup Final Souvenir Programme May 2016

13

Garth Crooks levelled for Spurs before Villa, usually in the shadow of compatriot Ossie Ardiles, set off on a twisting run deep into the City box. He slotted home as he fell to the ground and then began a riotous run of celebration of the winner

Coventry City 3-2 Tottenham Hotspur, 1987

"Gary Mabbutt's Knee" is the name of a long-running Coventry City fanzine, its name a tribute to the winning goal of a truly excellent final. Coventry were a long-standing First Division club of the time but this was the greatest day in Sky Blue history. Tottenham, who had pushed on three fronts for glory, ended the season potless despite boasting an all-star line-up that included Glenn Hoddle and Chris Waddle.

Spurs' Clive Allen scored his 49th goal of the season in the second minute from a Waddle assist, only for Dave Bennett to equalise. Spurs centre-back Mabbutt put the favourites in front, but then Keith Houchen's goal, a diving header, was one of Wembley's finest. Extra time in baking sun followed and once Lloyd McGrath's cross had deflected off Mabbutt and looped over goalkeeper Ray Clemence, Coventry clung on for their finest hour. Coventry co-managers John Sillett and George Curtis celebrated wildly on the Wembley turf.

Liverpool 3-3 West Ham United, 2006

The other major trophy of Rafa Benitez's Liverpool reign was collected in just as breathless a fashion as the Champions League final in 2005.West Ham will always rue the late miss from Marlon Harewood that meant the final, played for the last time in the FA Cup final's temporary home of Cardiff, eventually went to penalties. Liverpool fans will recall this as another day when Steve Gerrard saved them and then inspired them to success.

A Jamie Carragher own-goal and a Dean Ashton strike had the Hammers in front but Djibril Cisse and Gerrard both volleyed in for Liverpool. Pepe Reina's mistake from a Paul Konchesky cross left Liverpool needing an equaliser in added time. Gerrard, seemingly finished by cramp, crashed in a 30-yard strike to push the game in extra time.

There, Harewood missed the chance that would have won the match for the Hammers, his injured left foot flailing the ball wide. Reina made amends for a poor match with three penalty saves, the last coming from Anton Ferdinand.

Europa Point's Road to the final:

1ST ROUND (W) 0-0 MONS CALPE S.C (5-4 on pens) 1/4 FINAL (W) 7-1 FC OLYMPIQUE 13 1/2 FINAL (W) 10-0 CANNONS FC

With four remaining games including today's match for Europa Point FC,there is a unique opportunity for the club to complete a 'mini double' of sorts for the Second Division side. Having overcome a Red Imps side 2-1 on Tuesday evening, Europa Point have opened a three point lead over second place Mons Calpe S.C with three games left to see out. However the focus has now turned to the Second Division Cup and having won the trophy in a frenetic 5-3 A.E.T win over Angels FC in last years final, Europa Point will know they are in for another thrilling final against fellow promotion chasers FC Bruno's Magpies.

Europa Point FC began their road to the final with arguably the toughest possible opponent- this seasons promotion rivals Mons Calpe S.C who had knocked out the club in the first round of the Rock Cup winning 2-1 in Europa Point's only competitive loss of the season to date. This match was a close knit affair much like the previous encounter with few real clear cut chances for either side in the ninety minutes. Penalties ensued and Mons Calpe had a chance to win but missed a vital spot kick to win it for the Calpeans and Europa Point capitalised and scored their remaining penalties to progress 5-4.

It was then on to the quarter-finals with a match against FC Olympique 13 which marked the memorable debut of striker Christian Nunez Chaves who netted four goals to add to goals from Adam Spinks, Marek Albert and Jose 'Chapeto' Campoy. A much more assured performance from the team who progressed through to the semi-finals led by striker Christian Nunez who has been a sensation since joining the club scoring a remarkable 17 goals in only 6 appearances for the club in total.

Cannons FC was the team that stood in the way of successive Second Division Cup finals and Europa Point were in a rampant mood blowing away the opposition with a comprehensive 10-0 win in a match which could have been a potential upset having held Europa Point to a scoreless draw in the last meeting between the two sides in the league. Goals from Paul Grech, Marek Albert (2), Isaac Cereto Puerta, Luis McCoy and a hat-trick from Christian Nunez Chavez sealing the place in the final for the club.

Thanks to Europa Point for submitting their articles.

Although Europa Point will enter the final having won all previous competitive matches against FC Bruno's Magpies, the team will know that they are in for another hard fought game against the fellow promotion chasers who are a team playing with confidence due to their impressive form as of late having overtaken Gibraltar Phoenix FC and are currently breathing down the necks of Mons Calpe S.C for a chance at promotion.

THE EUROPA POINT / FC BRUNOS MAGPIES CONNECTION

FC Bruno's Magpies has got a few Europa Point connections within their ranks

with their drastic improvement this season largely thanks to the work of manager

Joel Williams who left Europa Point as Assistant Manager towards the end of

last season to take over the magpies in his first managerial job in football. The

outspoken, charismatic manager has turned this Bruno's outfit from an 9th place

finish to promotion challengers and if promotion is not achieved this season, and

the team remains intact and is boosted by further signings, FC Bruno's Magpies

will surely mount another challenge next year. Alongside him is Warren Muscat

who was also Assistant to Manager Miguel Perez and helped guide Europa

Point to an unbeaten first half of the season.

On the playing side, Magpies favourite Harry Perry donned the white and red of

Europa Point last season making 8 appearances for the club before heading

back to the Magpies later that season. Current Magpies striker Nick Dembele

could have been featuring for Europa Point in today's kickoff had circumstances

been different and he has proven during his time for Bruno's that he has the

potential to be a key player in the final if on form.

LAST YEAR’S FINAL

Europa Point FC 5

(JC.Costa Ramon, R.Montovio, D.Rodgers and D.Atkinson x2)

Angels FC 3

(Mena Jimenez x2 and Munoz Ruiz)

Article taken from local sports report:

Angels got the game underway and started controlling the first few minutes of the game and suddenly a quick break away saw Europa Point winger Jose Carlos Costa Ramon rob the ball of an Angels player, skip

past another in Perez and cut inside and from a tight angle manage to squeeze the ball past Mateo Perez to give Europa Point the lead. Angels FC fought back and were awarded a penalty as a shot from Nieto Arguez was handled in the area by right-back Hilario Carretero Garcia, and the defender was given a straight red, all before ten minutes had passed. Angels striker Mena Jimenez stepped up and calmly slotted his penalty past Alvaro Dominguez sending him the wrong way.

10-man Europa Point quickly regained the lead, winger Dexter Atkinson skipped past defender Nunez Contreras and from a tight angle smashed it top corner via the crossbar. 2-1 for Europa Point and only 15 minutes gone. Europa Point settled and continued to dominate with midfielder Garcia Sene going close and striker Robert Montovio’s header going inches wide of the post. Europa Point soon found themselves 3-1 up, winger Costa Ramon excellently dribbled past three defenders and his perfect cross was met by Robert Montovio who beat Mateo Perez with a great finish.

A spirited Angels side gave it their all in the second half, striker Palomino crossed it in for Mena Jimenez to head his effort straight into the hands of Dominguez. Europa Point nearly found themselves 4-1 up as a cross from Dexter Atkinson found unmarked striker Robert Montovio in the middle but his header went just wide of the post. With 20 minutes left and Europa Point looking certain to become champions, Angels striker Mena Jimenez gave his team some hope after his 25 yard shot headed straight into the top corner, keeper Dominguez didn’t stand a chance.

Angels 2-3 Europa Point. The next 15 minutes saw Europa Point “park the bus” as Angels threw everything they had at them. A free-kick from Moreno Gomez was met by Ndiaga but his header hit the crossbar. Europa Point continued to defend in numbers which at one point saw them go to 7 at the back but despite their efforts at keeping their slender lead, Angels got an equalizer. a free-kick was whipped in and met at the back post by defender Munoz Ruiz who tapped it into an empty net, sending players, fans and their manager into an absolute frenzy. With the scores at 3-3, the game went into extra-time.

Just after extra-time Europa Point regained the lead, a free-kick from Alexis Sanchez was met at the far post by defender Daniel Rodgers who tapped it into an empty net. Angels carried on attacking but the defensive tactics of Europa Point proved too much, as near the end of the game, Europa Point were soon able to breathe a sigh of relief as winger Dexter Atkinson ran through on goal, skipped past Mateo Perez and tapped it into an empty net, making it 5-3 with a deadly counter and killing off any hope Angels had of another comeback. There was still enough time for Angels to have a player sent off as Fernandez Perez was giving his marching orders for a second bookable offence.

We go into this cup final motivated by the fact that this has been the best season the Magpies have had. We go into this game knowing that we are unbeaten since January in the league, having accumulated 7 points in the second round more than the first round with two games to go. Knowing we have gone from fighting from the 5/6

th place in

the league table in December to fighting for the ultimate prize in May. We face a big task against a team that demands respect. A team still unbeaten this year. A team that I personally am very grateful to since it was thanks to Europa Point Fc that I was introduced to the football scene in Gibraltar back in September. These guys mean business but I can assure you that they will face a very well prepared and motivated bunch of players who will give them

a good run for their money.

In these past few months I have come to realise that The Magpies strength is based on three pillars. A serious administration with a clear vision and a professional attitude, an amazing following of supporters and a bunch of dedicated group of players to whom I take my hat off. These three factors make our club a unique club in Gibraltar with a vibe which is unmatched on the Rock. I have come to realise that The Magpies is more than just a club, it’s a culture, it’s an ideology and while I thank you in advance for the support you always give us and that I am sure you will give the team today, I promise you we are going to give it all on the field to be able to show our gratitude in the way we know best!

While for many, this cup final and the last few games of the league might sound like the end of a story, for me as a technical director as well as the club administration this is just the first chapter of a long story. Building a solid framework for a club is not simple, it takes years and ample time decisions are hard to swallow and understand by supporters, therefore in days like to day while I thank you all for the support and encourage you to celebrate this season’s successes I urge you to be the 12

th player on the

pitch in good and bad times as you have always done!

GIBRALTAR ON THE VERGE OF FIFA

Gibraltar won a major battle in its fight for FIFA membership when soccer's governing body was ordered by sport's highest tribunal on Monday to reconsider the British territory's application that was rejected 20 months ago.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) partially upheld the Gibraltar FA's (GFA) appeal that FIFA had "improperly rejected" its initial bid in September 2014. CAS also said it had told FIFA to submit the GFA's application to its an-nual Congress which has the power to grant membership.

The tribunal added the Congress, which meets in Mexico City next week, "shall take all necessary measures to admit the Gibraltar Football Association as a full member of FIFA without delay".

FIFA said in a statement that its council would discuss the issue early next week and decide on a response "including a potential request to amend the 66th FIFA Congress agenda in order to submit the Gibraltar FA's application".

Gibraltar became a member of UEFA in 2013 after a 14-year struggle during which it faced opposition from Spain. The British territory was twice rebuffed by European soccer's ruling body and took its case to CAS which ruled in its favour. UEFA then said Gibraltar's teams would be kept apart from Spain in any competition in which they took part.

Gibraltar's national team made their competitive debut in the 2016 European Championship qualifying campaign. They lost all 10 matches, conceding 56 goals.

Overall, they have played 18 matches, including friendlies, managed one win against Liechtenstein, and have employed three coaches.

Angel Maria Villar, president of the Spanish soccer federation, refused to comment when approached by reporters at his hotel in Budapest where UEFA is holding its annual Congress on Tuesday. REUTERS
