Good evening and a warm welcome to The Lichfield Garrick Theatre, to what I believe will be a memorable night for you all.
The society has gone a little “off piste” on this production and I am confident that you will all enjoy the ride! This particular show has attracted interest from quite a few new members to the society, which we always welcome, and I am personally delighted to welcome these new and highly talented faces to our team.
This particular show not only demonstrates the acting and singing talents of the main characters but also adds a further element, that of puppetry. The actors playing the main parts have been very busy in puppetry workshops and working with each other in an effort to master this difficult art, and I hope you will enjoy watching them demonstrate their new found skills.
In today’s current politically correct climate, where there is a fear of doing or saying the wrong thing for fear of offending, this show embraces, head on, all of those topics that most shows tend to shy away from. Nothing escapes the riotous attack; religion, race, sex, drugs, politics are all fair game, but it’s OK, these characters can get away with it, because, after all, they’re not real people, they’re only puppets! So, sit back, relax, forget any of your previous PC inhibitions and get giggling!
Bob Harrison
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGEGood evening ladies and gentlemen and welcome to our performance
of Avenue Q which we are delighted to be performing here at the Garrick Theatre.
With its catchy score and witty lyrics the cast and production team have thoroughly enjoyed being a part of this satirical, laugh-out-loud show. Notable for its use of puppets animated by puppeteers who make a visible contribution to the action rather than being concealed, Avenue Q has brought new skills into our repertoire. The “Human” actors perform alongside the puppet characters as they tackle the issues of daily life on a New York street providing humour with a strong dose of realism. Politically correct it isn’t!
For our production team, James Pugh has been a perfect choice as Director, superbly bringing the show to life with an excellent cast. His own talents as a humorous actor have contributed to his direction greatly.
As Musical Director the Society are extremely pleased to welcome back Dave Easto! Dave is a committed and talented MD who works extremely well with Principals and chorus alike and can always be relied upon to go the extra mile to make a show a musical success.
In the role of choreographer Charlotte Middleton has ensured that the puppets have blended seamlessly with their animators and the human cast to create slick musical numbers.
As always I would like to thank all back stage, technical, dressing room and front of house volunteers for their hard work and of course yourselves as our audience for your continued support.
I hope you enjoy the show and I look forward to seeing you all again for our production of My Fair Lady at this theatre in September.
Helen Chave
PRODUCTION DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE
Hello and welcome to Avenue Q!It is my honour to have been asked to direct for Lichfield Operatic Society again.
When I was asked to do this I jumped at the chance and then realised this is a completely different type of show to direct. The rehearsal process, although a huge amount of fun was a totally new challenge for me and the cast, we all had to find our way together, and I quite honestly could not have asked for a better cast do this with, their hard work and dedication has really paid off as you will see tonight.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Deborah Middleton and her backstage team for their hard work. The other unsung heroes are sound, lighting, prompt, make-up and props who all bring the show to life.
I would also like to offer my congratulations and huge thanks to my choreographer Charlotte Middleton. This is the second show she has choreographed for me, and her work ethic and ideas are the reason she is so sought after. I would also like to thank my long-time friend and collaborator David Easto who has joined us again as
Musical Director. His talent is second to none. The way he works with the cast, and the band is something to behold, I am genuinely blessed and so happy to be working with him again.
That just leaves me one more thank you, and that is to you. Thank you for your continued support now and over the years, without it we would not exist. So thanks and enjoy your evening!

This is Anil’s debut performance with Lichfield Operatic Society (LOS) and he is both thrilled and honoured to have been given the opportunity
to play the role of Princeton. In his younger days, Anil enjoyed singing and performing at school so went on to study Popular Music and Music Technology. In 2014 he joined Sutton Coldfield Musical Theatre Company (SCMTC) for their production of The Witches of Eastwick and since then has regularly been involved in shows.Previous roles include: Reverend Ed Parsley - Witches of Eastwick, Sid - Half a Sixpence, Ritchie Valens - Buddy, Tootles - Peter Pan, Seaweed - Hairspray and Emmo - Our House.Anil has found the role of puppetry an enjoyable challenge in Avenue Q. As a Reception teacher, he regularly uses puppets in his classroom and it’s those puppetry skills which have been invaluable in helping him bring ‘Princeton’ to life.Anil would like to thank LOS for the warm welcome they have given him for
his first show with them. He has thoroughly enjoyed rehearsing and performing with the society over the past few months. He hopes the audiences enjoy the show as much as the cast have enjoyed bringing it to the stage.

He was also a frequent face on the ITV and Sky series “Redcoats” and has performed live on Nickelodeon. Pete is really enjoying learning the difficult art of puppetry and is loving the somewhat risqué show songs!

Performing a character based on a real life person, I feel a certain level of responsibility to do him justice through my performances. In order to prepare myself Diff ’rent Strokes has been an ever-present bedtime watch for a number of months.” Aaron would like to thank you, the audience, for supporting LOS and hopes you thoroughly enjoy this hilarious show. He would also like to pay special mention to his girlfriend, Abbie, who has had to put up with listening to the Avenue Q soundtrack on repeat… Sorry!!

AVENUE Q - THE STORY
ACT ONEOpening Act one we meet Princeton, a bright-
eyed college grad, who comes to New York City with big dreams and a tiny bank account. He soon discovers that the only neighbourhood in his price range is Avenue Q; still, the neighbours seem nice. There’s Brian the out-of-work comedian and his therapist fiancé Christmas Eve; Nicky, the good-hearted slacker, and his roommate Rod - a Republican investment banker who seems to have some sort of secret; an Internet addict called Trekkie Monster; and a very cute kindergarten teaching assistant named Kate Monster. Princeton decides to move in and gets the keys to his apartment from the building’s superintendent, Gary Coleman (yes- that Gary Coleman!).
Later, Rod, whilst reading his favourite book (Broadway Musicals of the 1940’s) is interrupted by Nicky who assures Rod that if he were gay he would stand by him. Meanwhile, Princeton is trying to determine his purpose in life and asks for Kate’s help. Unintentionally he make a racist comment about Monsters which infuriates Kate however they then explore the notion that everyone’s a little bit racist.
At her teaching job, Kate is assigned an important lesson. She decides to teach the kids about the Internet, but neighbour Trekkie Monster upstages her by insisting that the internet is for porn! Later, as she contemplates her relationship with Princeton, he arrives with a gift for her and an invitation to go out to the Around the Clock Club.
At the Club we are introduced to Lucy The Slut who sings that she can make everyone feel special! The trouble-making Bad Idea Bears get Kate and Princeton drunk and send them home, where they “get it on” noisily. Meanwhile, a sleeping Rod dreams that Nicky is in love with him; in real life, Kate expresses her fondness for Princeton and he gives her a lucky penny.
Brian and Christmas Eve decide get married. At the reception, Nicky suggests that Rod is gay. Rod overhears and defensively brags about his girlfriend in Canada then he kicks Nicky out of the apartment. Princeton realises he’s forgotten his purpose in life, and he breaks up with Kate, who recognises the fine line between love and a waste of time.
ACT TWOA few weeks later, Princeton has still not found
his purpose and is more miserable than ever. Brian convinces Princeton to get out into the city and as a result hooks up with Lucy. Kate writes Princeton a note asking him to meet her on top of the Empire State building. Lucy reads the note and destroys it.
Meanwhile, Nicky has no place to live, and asks Gary for help. Gary explains the concept of taking pleasure in other people’s pain- Schadenfreude!
Kate waits in vain for Princeton atop the Empire State Building. She throws his lucky penny off the side, and it lands in Lucy’s skull 102 stories below. Princeton, Nicky, and Kate all remember a simpler time.
Meeting homeless Nicky on the street, Princeton decides to help Kate open her Monster school, and
they enlist others to help raise money. Falling very short, they turn to Trekkie Monster, who saves the day. A thrilled Kate gets
her school. Rod appears and comes triumphantly out of the closet. He asks Nicky to move back
in, and in return Nicky brings out someone who looks just like himself: a boyfriend he
found for Rod! Meanwhile Kate, touched by Princeton’s generous action, agrees to try a relationship again.
A newcomer to the street makes Princeton finally
realise his purpose: to put on a show about struggling through your twenties! Everyone agrees that it’s a bad idea. Seeing his sadness and frustration, his friends console him, teaching him that everything in life, good and bad,
is only for now.
Inspired by the beloved children’s show Sesame Street, Avenue Q is the winner of the Tony “Triple Crown” for Best Musical, Best Score, and Best Book! This ‘part flesh, part felt’ creates a puppet-filled world where Puppets and Humans are friends, Monsters are good and life lessons are learned as our characters face the difficult and X-Rated realities of modern day life.
